The concept of a woman's love transforming a beast into a handsome man is an almost universal story because it's a metaphor for how women, marriage and families were seen as the main catalysts for young uncouth teens to become mature responsible adults.
Yeah I'm more curious about the symbology at the time that was undoubtedly woven into the story, especially the folk bits like a wilting rose. Or if any of it was based on people at the time, (not like incest was uncommon in French royalty...).
I can this being part of the idea that love for the person within can dim qualities that one might find unattractive and bring to light the attractive ones in the eyes of the one who loves them
Btw, cinnamon in ancient Rome was suuuuper fancy. I realize that today it's like "oh lol he smells like cookies," but it was an incredibly expensive spice back then. Psyche smelling it on her mystery visitor could have been a cue that he was either some kind of royalty or a deity.

@kenkahre9262 Nah, Hollywood really likes the 30-50 yr age gap max, character or actor. It's a dime a dozen in anime to have a 500+ yr old girl that looks 14 at the OLDEST and an actual 16 yr old
Something i love about old fantasy and sci fi stories, is how they sometimes predict and inform inventions that become commonplace all these years later. "Magic windows and mirrors" end up being just TVs. Star trek communicators become cell phones! ... A lot of H G Wells work.
I mean most of these are just wishes that would someday come true...through "bloods & tears" we made all these pre say. And who knows how many modern fantasy & scifi also gonna be fulfilled.
I know the feeling. I've been used and then thrown away and treated like trash by every woman I've ever dated or been in a relationship with and also get rejected for being disabled. Fuck Valentine's Day. If you have someone you love, you should show it every day just by showing you care, and I've done that in every relationship I've ever been in, but I'm still treated like garbage and rejected. I've been called damaged goods so many times. I'll say it again: Fuck Valentine's Day.
I mean the Palantiris (those crystal balls from Lord of the Rings) are basically just smart phones and Ipads. they even came complete with a dark lord (or in most cases a creepy hacker) staring back at you through the webcam
One teensy-tiny detail here is wrong: in the 1749 original version of beauty and the beast, the beast actually asks beauty each evening if she "would share her bed with him".
I honestly love the fact that in the end Beauty went from 1 loving father and 6 bitchy sisters, to two loving dads, a loving mom, a loving aunt, and a husband. More stories need to include giant families
💗My favorite version is the 1987 tv series with Linda Hamilton as Catherine & Ron Perlman as Vincent. Set in 1987 in New York, she's an assistant district attorney & he's a lion-man who lives in abandoned tunnels under the subways with a caring society of outcast people. I did not like the ending, but that's what fanfiction is for.
You saved my sanity! I saw some episodes of that series when I was eight or so and I thought it was a dream, but - lion-man under the city - it's this!
Because I'm disabled, I've always been treated like a beast for what I am on the outside. Sometimes it's the beautiful people on the outside who are the real monsters on the inside. Also, some of us beasts can't turn into handsome princes. I have severe Tourettes Syndrome and OCD as well as Degenerative Disc Disease that causes in my spine as well as problems with both hips and shoulders that cause additional pain, so I walk with a cane even though I'm only 31 and have been walking with a cane since my early 20s. My hair is prematurely greying as well so I've been told I look ten years older than I am. I'm in good shape otherwise because I work out five days a week despite the pain and I'm 6ft. 3in. tall and broad shouldered, so I don't think of myself as horribly ugly, but being disabled is all it takes for people to treat me like garbage, especially by women I've been in relationships with as well as being rejected and toyed with and/or lead on and used. I'm too disabled to follow my dreams and I can't work a regular job. I sell antique coins to make money and I have savings as well as a fully paid off house, but being a loving person and a good partner apparently isn't good enough. I don't expect sympathy or anything, I just needed to vent and share how much I hate my life because of how lonely I am and how empty my life feels due to not being able to follow my dreams and all I want now is to have someone to love and be loved by, and how depressingly hard it is to find someone who can love me in return. I live in an area where I have only one friend because of how hateful and judgmental people are on top of it being a small town and due to his busy schedule we almost never get to hang out and I feel isolated. Sorry for the pity party here, I just needed to share all of this before bottling it up became too much to bear. Whenever I try to talk to someone about it they tell me to just shut up or to deal with it or to not mope and moan, so I feel like there's no one and nowhere for me to say all of this to. Valentine's Day is that specific holiday that brings all of this even more to the surface for me because I've had some bad Valentine's Days in the past and have been alone for many of them as well. Anyway, if anyone does read this, sorry again for all the complaining, and...thank you.
Damn, I'm so sorry people are so shitty to you about those issues. It sounds like you live near my hometown because people near where I live are hateful and judgemental, as well. And, unfortunately, when I was struggling with severe mental health issues, and thus, disabled, people treated me like shit because I couldn't work. I've learned how to manage my mental health issues in the years since, but that's what it's been like for me. It can't even begin to imagine how difficult it is for you because there's nothing that can be done for those issues, from my understanding. My heart goes out to you, and I hope you find someone who loves you.
@@Artretha Thank you so much for your kindness and I hope that all goes well for you in your own experiences. I'm sorry that you've had a hard time as well and I'm glad that you were able to make it through.
I (27 F) married a disabled man (30 M). Although he needs my whole attention and we won’t have the life I once dreamed of when I was a teenager, he is the best husband I could have ever imagined. And truly, after living with him and knowing about his family and so… The thing is it’s hard for people to look into the eyes of someone whose suffering is MUCH MUCH MUCH greater than the one they will ever feel. I live with a permanent broken heart, I only want to see him really happy. So people get upset with him. I did too, until I realised he was not acting, it was indeed true. I thought, literally “or either he is the most selfish man on earth or he is really suffering”. It’s hard for people (I include myself) to realise and care about disabilities that you can not see. Maybe it would be easier if he was in a wheelchair, you know? So, only to tell you, have hope, it will arrive some day. 😊 I hope this helps! Don’t give up and own your disabilities! You need a loving wife/husband with lots of patience, did your past partners have patience? You need someone capable of loving, we believe you truly love when you have suffered, could they love you unconditionally? Don’t settle for less! That’s what I am telling you! You only need to find 1 person. This world how much people does it have? I don’t know but only one person that loves you, you will find!! I am telling you this because I know what it feels like because of my husbands past and some of his friends in this situation. Just imagine when he came back to his SMALL hometown married, showing me off to people who didn’t think he would ever get nothing good (he thinks I am very pretty 😂). After almost two years with him I learnt a lot, I hope this helps: 1. Sadly, wearing nice clothes helps. He had to dress to impress so no one would even think about messing with him. He seemed a gangster (which I hated but it really prevented they laugh at him). And that’s a thing he discovered, when I fell in love with him he only wore sports clothing and I had to get used to the new style. 2. A little love and caring makes a long way. It means, I realised that even if I don’t know nothing about health only if I tryed he was better. No arguing, massages, eating healthy (we are trying the Glucose Godess method, check it out), quitting smoking… vitamin supplements which I read in a scientific journal it was good for someone who took his kind of medication… I know it’s hard when you are so sad, but try to treat yourself with love and respect. Treat yourself also! Go to places you love, speak up to people who tell you bad things! I hope I gave you hope, really 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼
@@mikami42 This is the kindest and most thoughtful message I've ever read. Thank you for this. My past partners would just drop me when things got tough and never put in the effort I did into our relationship. Luckily I do take care of myself and stay in good shape, especially since the leaner I am the less it should affect my back as I age, or so I'm told anyway. I'm 6ft. 3in. tall and only weigh 200 pounds (I'm shooting for 190 and average weight for someone my height I'm told is 220.) so I'm pretty fit and I keep a healthy diet. I dress as nicely as my condition will allow because the Tourettes Syndrome side of me makes wearing anything not baggy impossible due to the irritation fabric touching my skin causes me, but I usually have sort of a paramilitary look going on. Unfortunately, I'm accustomed to having been assaulted over the years and I've trained in martial arts for at least a decade now, so I've gotten good at looking over my shoulder and watching my own back. Anyway, thank you again for your uplifting message and for caring enough to send it. I wish you and your husband both all the best in all aspects of your lives together.
This story is actually the opposite of Bluebeard and its related myths! BnB: "Don't be afraid to marry a rich ugly man, he might be really sweet, and financially stable!" vs Bluebeard: "Don't just marry a man for his wealth and looks, he could be a serial killer!"
I watched a black and white version on tcm released in 1945. It was made in france, it was all in french, and had english subtitles. I enjoyed it and thought it was well done. The fact they were able to make it with shortages going on due to wwII makes it all the more impressive.
My favorite retelling of this story is the 2014 french version starring Vincent Cassell and Lea Seydoux. The take on the story and the gorgeous production design just leaves me speechless.
I've got no words for that at all, so the The Black Fairy is based off the fairy who wanted to marry the prince, but in Once Upon a Time, the Black Fairy is his mother! Something about that doesn't sit right with me, even if one is a tv show and one is a Fairy Tale story.
King's Quest 6 has a scene clearly inspired by this story, where Alexander goes to an island named The Isle of The Beast and is confronted by another prince, who's been turned into a beast by an evil witch. The only cure for his curse is for a fair maiden to willingly come to his island and live with him. In addition to that, the curse will also transform Alexander into a beastly servant of his, in a few hours (15 minutes in game time), unless it's broken. Luckily, Alexander is able to find a maiden named Beauty (gee, who'd have thunk?) who becomes so touched by the story of the beast, that she decides to go and help him. (I should probably also point out that Beauty is enslaved by an unkind stepmother in this story, much like Cinderella, so she's pretty much doing herself a favor as well.) The curse is broken and the prince turns back into a human, Beauty becomes his bride, and just before the prince escorts her to her new home, he gives Alexander a token - his magic mirror, which is enchanted to show the truth. Alexander can later use this mirror to either remind the Lord of the Dead of who he used to be, or unmask the evil vizier's genie masquerading as the princess, depending on whether the player goes for the good ending or the bad ending. Another couple of fun facts to point out: 1. Alexander is voiced by Robby Benson, who voiced the prince in the Disney adaptation of the movie 2. Like the beast, Alexander's family have a magic mirror of their own, that foretells the future and gives them helpful visions throughout the series
Excellently done! "East of the sun, west of the moon" also shares a lot of similarities with "Cupid and Psyche". Alongside Beaumont's version and "Cupid and Psyche", "East of the sun" (especially the one illustrated by P.J. Lynch) is my favorite version of this particular motif. If you do more animal groom/bride stories, how about "Hans my Hedgehog" comparing it with Jim Henson's "The Storyteller" adaptation.
I rewatched your first beauty and the beast video just the other day 😅 It's one of my favourite's, excited to see what else you've found out about it 😊 hope you'll still cover the sequel mary poppins books and what commonalities they share with the movies
I read about that original version of the story years ago. Disney did The Beast dirty by making him an a-hole where he was cursed due to his own selfishness, when originally he was cursed due to his creepy old predatory godmother not taking "no" for an answer.
I love it when you go back to one of your early videos and expand on them with the insane amount of knowledge you’ve accumulated in the meantime! You covered some brilliant stories back then and so getting them again, using your newer format is a massive bonus.
Lunar New Year is tomorrow; we'll be going into the Year of the Dragon, or the Year of the Naga in Thailand. It might be fun to see you go into creatures of the Chinese Zodiac, and their surprising cultural variants. The individual stories of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, and the reason why they are what they are and where they are on the wheel are pretty wild; honorable shoutout to the Rabbit's personal story (we are currently in the Year of the Rabbit), for not even being part of beginnings of some of the events but still literally crossing the finish line to become part of the wheel anyway. If you want to know what that was all about, go and look into those stories about each of the individual animals in the zodiac I mentioned earlier.
As a Dragon, I love the dragon's story! It could have easily won, but it stopped to be kind, and save people...and that's always resonated with me - be kind, no matter who you are, even if you're powerful and strong. But I would LOVE to learn about the cultural variations of this zodiac!
I think the Disney version is the best version because they put more effort to the story rather than just the parts from the original version. My favorite part was the battle with the enchanted objects and the villagers. I like the animated version because it’s the one I grew up with. I also like the live action version because they made the parts more specific.
Belle in the Disney movie has a few more differences from her literary counterpart than just being an only child. Beauty in the original is kind, beautiful, gentle, graceful and every inch a proper lady. Yes, she’s educated (a great number of women were at that time) but, like most wealthy women at the time, more emphasis was placed on her musical, domestic and social skills. She’s also a bit bland by modern standards. Disney’s Belle on the other hand is still a kindhearted and caring woman but she’s also opinionated and stubborn. She refuses to let Gaston and later the Beast boss her around. In fact, she only starts falling for the Beast when he makes genuine efforts to change and shows that there’s more to him than just being a selfish and temperamental monster.
@24:11, this story about Fairies reminds me of Iolanthe, an operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan. would you do some videos on the plays or a video about Iolanthe? There are books with the scripts.
In the song “Make My Son the King Someday” in Pantless Knight’s Shrek 2 Musical when the Fairy Godmother talks about Prince Charming’s 12 brothers, one of them is the Beast. This means that that version of the Beast is born to a King and a wicked Fairy (the Fairy Godmother), so that version of the Beast and the Villeaneuve version of Beauty would find common ground.
I found and watched a movie based more on the French novel. I didn't know it was a more accurate version to the original story. Very cool 😊 The Royal systems, most of, if not all of the time kept it in the family. Even the current day Brittain. Queen Elizabeth was cousins to her husband, George and Meghan is Harry's 16th cousin. I only know about those 2 pairs. But maybe we can Google the rest of them too.
The first part of your video, reminds me of a 2014 version of Beauty and the Beast. At the beginning of the 2014 version, Belle has a storybook, getting to tell a story to her two children. As Belle is telling a story to her two children, we see three sailing ships getting caught in a nasty storm. Belle's father is a merchant, with 3 sons and 3 daughters. They lost everything, and were forced to move to the countryside. One of the merchant's sons is a gambler and is in debt too. I don't wanna give away the whole movie, but you should check it out.
This guy’s video on Ragnarok is one of my favorite videos and he makes me think that I should probably read something about mythology because it sounds pretty epic. I don’t really wanna know more about it, so thank you John solo and keep up the good work
Well, that'll upset my aunt. LOL! She really likes old-school Disney. If you mention how messed up the original fairy tales were, and she leaves the room. She knows them but doesn't like to think about them.
Cousin marriage seems weird now but back in the olden times, it was considered quite normal... Even Charles Darwin was married to his cousin; weird nowadays but accurate to the times when it was written... Interesting story, I'll have to look it up...
Marrying a cousin is still legal in Europe, and in Finland, for example, cousins are not legally considered close relatives. However, in modern times, the idea that marrying your first, second, third, fourth or fifth cousin is not socially acceptable because it is disgusting has become more and more established so that people even have a false impression that it is prohibited by law.
In the Disney live action remake, I wish that they somehow made the enchantress pay for her curse, because she not only wrecked many families because of them working at the prince's palace, but she also expected too much from a kid, as she not only arrived at the palace in the middle of the night, but she also pretty much demanded to be fed and taken care of, instead of just asking if she could at least stay the night, and then because the prince said no most likely because of stranger danger and stuff, while in the Disney movie they just made it that it was because he was looking down on the woman, and called her ugly and a bunch of stuff, but even if that had been the case, she was in no position to demand things from him, and not only that if she did not like the prince's treatment and wanted to still curse him, she had no reason to involve all of the palace's servants, because most of them were just innocent servants, that most likely didn't even get to meet her in order to treat her badly, because I could understand if she had cursed the butler or maids or whatever had they been the one to greet her, and then them not opposing how the prince dealt with the situation, that would have been one thing, but she cursed ALL the servants and even the little kid that became a teacup, which makes the enchantress a totally evil person that deserved punishment, and its messed up that she got away with everything she did, even if you could say she was just trying to teach the prince a harsh lesson.
I actually disagree with this take. If we are saying that this story takes place in the distant past where the beast is a landowner with traditional responsibilities then it would actually be his duty to offer shelter for travelers. Hospitality is something a traveler had a kind of right to because the road would have been very dangerous. You see this reflected in old stories and myths too. Hospitality has a super important status, and people face some pretty dire consequences for not honoring it. Hell the old woman even offered to pay, which she was under no obligation to do. As for stranger danger. In this case the prince has a castle, and servants, and presumably soldiers. This would absolutely not be equivalent to some stranger asking to stay the night at our house today. It would be more like someone getting turned away from a public institution because they look ugly. It was callus, thoughtless, cruel, and against his sacred responsibilities. A lonely old woman with no place for shelter at night in the cold could after all die. As for cursing his servants, while I don’t nessecerily agree the implication it that as his household the servants are an extension of the prince and shares in some of the responsibilities. Perhaps you can think of them as enablers, who did nothing to prevent their lord from neglecting his duties. Of course Enchantresses are a bit extreme and she was just treated as subhuman and more or less left to die in the cold so that’s also an explanation as to why she was pissed off enough to curse the entire castle.
26:56 …and by ‘gently nudging’, she meant using her fairy magic to cause two ships full of ‘unimportant’ sailors to meet a watery grave, so that the merchant would have serve his intended purpose, leave the city and move closer to her beloved prince…🧚♀️💀🪄
The whole thing about beauty origins actually reminds me of the Twisted Tales book, As Old as Time, where Belles mother is actually the enchantress who curses the beast to begin with, and was kind of the leader in her magical community. She was even captured and kept in an insane asylum, and was only released when belle was also taken to the asylum and then subsequently broke out. Makes me wonder if the other read the original story, or if its just a coincidence.
There are only 4 countries in the world that forbid 1st cousin marriage. North Korea, South Korea, China, Philippines. It isn't illegal in the USA, although some states won't allow it. However, the states where it forbids marriage between 1st cousins will recognize the marriage as legal if the couple married legally in a different state. It wasn't uncommon or considered bad to marry a cousin 100 years ago.
Wow, I didn't know Beauty & The Beast had such an extensive backstory. I remember hearing that one of the animators/storyboarders for the 1991 Disney adaptation said something about making cuts to hit the deadline for the theatrical release. I'm guessing that the true "third act" you described here was one of the things that had to be cut.
my favorite version of the beauty and the beast was a sci-fi show that made it like a murder case and the beauty is a detective and trying solve murder cases and trying to figure out who murder her mother and saved her from the killers
Really enjoyed learning about this version of Beauty and the Beast! I kind of love the idea of Beauty being half-fae- it adds an extra magical twist and explains why she is so beautiful. I highly recommend FutureLearn's free online course called Fairy Tales: Meanings, Messages, and Morals. It reviews Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, and Bluebeard in the context of the time they were released and made popular.
The Beast was the real villain of the story. Even in the Disney film he abducts an innocent young girl and forces her to stay with him until she falls in love with him. At best, this is emotional abuse. At worst, it's serial killer behaviour. How many other girls has he done this to before he met Belle?
I could never understand that part of the Disney movie showing Beast not knowing how to use utensils. He was a prince before that! Of COURSE he should know how to use them!
Maybe having paws instead of hands is making using utensils a bit difficult. And maybe, being a beast made him feel like it wasn't worth the effort so he let himself go and unlearned all the manners he had been taught.
oh, theres russian tale The Scarlet Flower by Sergey Aksakov, retale, not translate, of Beuty and the Beast, but on old-russian manner :) i loved the cartoon when i was a kid, but the "beast" still gives me shivers😅
You know it would be great to see you do a messed up origin of Korean folklore from k-dramas. You should check out some of them that are fantasy themed and inspired by the original folklore.
Hey Jon, you should do a series where you analyze Shakespeare's poems and plays. One play by Shakespeare that you should totally analyze is Romeo and Juliet.
I don't remember where I heard this but I vaguely recall learning that the beauty and the beast story had some moral attached to arranged marriage. Learning the rest of the story does support this as the good fairy basically planned the match and it's framed as saving them both.
I know many people would say The Lion King or Tarzan, but personally, Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite Disney movie, and after watching this video it makes me like the story even more. It makes me wish Disney would do a retelling of the movie and include some of these original details.
That's why I love the recent french version of Beauty and Beast with Lea Seydoux, it's very accurate to these original stories and the visuals, costumes are STUNNING!! Much better than the Disney version with that boring face actress...
Don't know if you've mentioned this in the other video about this story, but it is thought that this story may also have been based on the true story of Petrus Gonsalvus, a 14th-century to 15th-century Guanche man who had Hypertrichosis. His body and face were covered in hair, and he had quite an interesting life, being taken to various courts throughout Europe as a curiosity and a pet. His marriage to Lady Catherine is what is believed to have inspired the story of Beauty and the Beast.
Wait... so in the original version, the roses were never actually tied to his lifeforce? And yet almost every adaptation made it that way. Interesting...
I don't know why I haven't watched this retrospect yet despite Beauty and the Beast being my favorite story (and Disney animated movie) of all time, but i love the effort here featuring Villeneuve's version of the tale tbh, since i grew up more on Perrault/Beaumont's version. Always appreciate the works you do here, Jon🙏 Also the best part of the live action remake is (if anyone notices) that they actually made a brief callback to the original story by having Maurice stumbling upon a rose garden and having the Beast confronting him there, similar to the original. I absolutely love that nod, and i will defend that live action remake as one of the best Disney had attempted to do. Also the tale of Eros and Psyche reminds me of another favorite tale i like from type ATU425A: Animal as Bridegroom called "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" (apparently it's a Norwegian fairytale from same people who wrote/told the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff). Curious if you would prolly give it a look one of these days.
The Court of Rose and Thorn by Sarah Maas. There's a pretty descent French Live Action film which is better than Disney's live action Beauty and the Beast.
If you wanna see other Beauty and the Beast movies please watch Jean Cocteau’s la Belle et la Bête (1946) and my fave la Belle et la Bête (2014), I’ve seen some wild reiterations too from Czech Republic and I think Bulgaria? 🤔 been a while but saw them here on youtube lol. Don’t know if I can find them now
I love this episode!! And I love the ACOTAR books from Sarah J. Maas, I knew they were retellings of the fairy tales but there are so much closer to the originals ... I love them even more now!!! Super recomendables! Hello from Argentina!!
The moment I saw the title I immediately knew you were going to connect it to ancient Greek mythology; I had a feeling I'd read a similar story from that era. But funnily enough, i never would have thought that Psyche was the one you'd use- though it makes complete sense in retrospect.
I clocket it immediately. Mostly because that myth is so simmilar to « Kvitebjørn kong Valemon». A Norwegian fairytale collected by Asbjørnsen and Moe, and later painted by famous Norwegian painter Theodor Kittelsen. The story is the closest we have to Beauty and that Beast, so naturally Psyche and Eros is an easy leap.
Disney did have a version closer to the original version in mind, but eventually went with their different version, making Belle an only child and making her father an eccentric inventor instead of a wealthy merchant.
Hey I know you won't see this chat moment but there is an animated movie that follows the first version of the story I last saw the movie years ago but I was also called beauty and the beast and the movie was pretty creepy
I did think it was going to involve the Minnotaur myth because someone in that story breeds with a bull. I guess she did give birth to the beast instead of falling in love with it, so I guess it makes sense
I gotta say the whole plot involving the fairies sounds way cooler than what we got in the Disney movie and I would love to see that eventually get adapted into its own feature film
Beauty & the beast, & Mulan were my TWO #1 favorite Disney movies as a kid. I said what I said I have two #1's 😂. Thank you for information on the origins of one of my favorite stories because now I love it even more! I'd like to read it for myself if it in in English.
Thank you all for joining me for this week's episode! I had a lot of fun revisiting a story we haven't talked about in over SIX YEARS, so I hope you enjoyed it too :)

Valentine’s Day, the time of year when I go into Ebenezer Scrooge mode.
My boss told me I had to decorate the office for Valentine's Day, even after I said I really hate it. I really can't stand the "holiday".
I just use the holiday as an opportunity to love my self
I know the feeling. I've been used and then thrown away and treated like trash by every woman I've ever dated or been in a relationship with and also get rejected for being disabled. Fuck Valentine's Day. If you have someone you love, you should show it every day just by showing you care, and I've done that in every relationship I've ever been in, but I'm still treated like garbage and rejected. I've been called damaged goods so many times. I'll say it again: Fuck Valentine's Day.
Your balls get tight?
Yeah me too

One teensy-tiny detail here is wrong: in the 1749 original version of beauty and the beast, the beast actually asks beauty each evening if she "would share her bed with him".
Ohhhhh that makes sense because he's a beast
I think this fairytale just became one of my favorites. Beauty as a changeling is absolutely fire.

After almost two years with him I learnt a lot, I hope this helps:

The Black Fairy from Once Upon a Time is based on the evil fairy who wanted to marry the Prince.
WHAT, OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS AMAZING PEICE IF INFORMATION THAT I AM IMEDEATLY SHARING WITH EVERYONE I KNOW
I've got no words for that at all, so the The Black Fairy is based off the fairy who wanted to marry the prince, but in Once Upon a Time, the Black Fairy is his mother!
Another couple of fun facts to point out:
1. Alexander is voiced by Robby Benson, who voiced the prince in the Disney adaptation of the movie
29:39 Fun fact: Indonesia has a similar story with Beauty and the Beast called Lutung Kasarung (A Lost Monkey).
Awesome idea

I think the Disney version is the best version because they put more effort to the story rather than just the parts from the original version. My favorite part was the battle with the enchanted objects and the villagers. I like the animated version because it’s the one I grew up with. I also like the live action version because they made the parts more specific.

Yeah and the original story looks more like a Cinderella story than a Beauty and The Beast story I'm so glad it was changed.

Yeah and I like the Disney version better.
The original Beauty and the Beast ALWAYS reminded me of Eros and Psyche ❤️
The last story was exactly what I’ve been looking for but it was told differently with a candle but no knife. The trust was the key though
19:54 Sweet Home Alabama! (What? We're all thinking it.)
Using the Greek name Aphrodite for one god but then using the Roman name Cupid for the other. Come on man, lol. Just call him Eros.
I found and watched a movie based more on the French novel. I didn't know it was a more accurate version to the original story. Very cool 😊
The Royal systems, most of, if not all of the time kept it in the family. Even the current day Brittain. Queen Elizabeth was cousins to her husband, George and Meghan is Harry's 16th cousin. I only know about those 2 pairs. But maybe we can Google the rest of them too.
I've always appreciated the concepts behind these stories. And getting to know the messed up version of them.
I think it's funny how the Beast used to be just like Gaston.

It's actually still a recent thing since einstein also married his cousin
Queen Victoria married her first cousin.
We had better functioning families when cousin marriages were a thing
If i make any plans to go to Disneyland in the future, I'll definitely get some of that merch. Very fitting and cleverly done
Another GREAT "The Messed Up Origins" video!
Be far one the best fairy tales and Disney movies
Very true.
"Till we have faces" by C.S. Lewis is retelling of the cupid myth. Worth reading if you like that story 🙂
You HAVE to admit, that Good Fairy was playing some hardcore 4D chess close to the chest 😂 (maybe not really but this Fairy just because hero 👏👏👏
my favorite version of the beauty and the beast was a sci-fi show that made it like a murder case and the beauty is a detective and trying solve murder cases and trying to figure out who murder her mother and saved her from the killers

The animated series Mythic Warriors did en excellent job with the episode dedicated to Eros and Psyche.

This has always been my favorite fairytale since childhood. I'm pretty sure I've seen every movie and tv adaptation of this story as well.
Great recap/analysis. I'm really enjoying your explanations of these stories!
I don't remember where I heard this but I vaguely recall learning that the beauty and the beast story had some moral attached to arranged marriage. Learning the rest of the story does support this as the good fairy basically planned the match and it's framed as saving them both.
5:25 Literally during the “my daughter? Odd?” clip I got a push notification from r/oddlyterrifying lol
I like how they didn't make the Disney version like the original story because it would've been more like Cinderella than Beauty and The Beast.
Damnit man. That 'Ricky Rat' shirt is epic.
I know many people would say The Lion King or Tarzan, but personally, Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite Disney movie, and after watching this video it makes me like the story even more. It makes me wish Disney would do a retelling of the movie and include some of these original details.
Never stop adding the filler to get to whatever minute Mark you need, they're so informative and descriptive and joyously fun to watch and listen to ❤
That's why I love the recent french version of Beauty and Beast with Lea Seydoux, it's very accurate to these original stories and the visuals, costumes are STUNNING!! Much better than the Disney version with that boring face actress...
I knew of the story Greek myth of Psyche and Eros I didn't know the Roman version of Cupid and Psyche. Thanks for this video!
By far my all time favorite story and movie
Wait... so in the original version, the roses were never actually tied to his lifeforce? And yet almost every adaptation made it that way. Interesting...
Implied g-force inflicted fatal injuries are equally dramatic and family friendly.
I have a theory that Chip, the tea cup, eventually grew up and had a son named Caractacus Potts.
I don't know why I haven't watched this retrospect yet despite Beauty and the Beast being my favorite story (and Disney animated movie) of all time, but i love the effort here featuring Villeneuve's version of the tale tbh, since i grew up more on Perrault/Beaumont's version. Always appreciate the works you do here, Jon🙏
Also the best part of the live action remake is (if anyone notices) that they actually made a brief callback to the original story by having Maurice stumbling upon a rose garden and having the Beast confronting him there, similar to the original.
My mom loves the Disney version of the beauty and the beast and the live action version crazy right
The Court of Rose and Thorn by Sarah Maas.
There's a pretty descent French Live Action film which is better than Disney's live action Beauty and the Beast.
Interesting how similar Sleeping Beauty is to the original as well.

I love this episode!! And I love the ACOTAR books from Sarah J. Maas, I knew they were retellings of the fairy tales but there are so much closer to the originals ... I love them even more now!!! Super recomendables! Hello from Argentina!!
You’re a legend man, your deliveries are mad witty and well thought out 😂😂😂😂
The moment I saw the title I immediately knew you were going to connect it to ancient Greek mythology; I had a feeling I'd read a similar story from that era.
The polar bear king where she wasn’t supposed to see his face
Hey I know you won't see this chat moment but there is an animated movie that follows the first version of the story I last saw the movie years ago but I was also called beauty and the beast and the movie was pretty creepy
I cannot wait to watch this on my lunch break!!
I did think it was going to involve the Minnotaur myth because someone in that story breeds with a bull. I guess she did give birth to the beast instead of falling in love with it, so I guess it makes sense
Damn can you imagine if Disney added all that shit to the movies?
I love the story of Cupid and Psyche. You have beautiful background art.
it's impressive on how Disney adapt the story.
Thanks to Down To Sleep's narration, I've finally heard the original BATB among others you've covered already.
I think it’s pronounced “Veel-noov” which interestingly enough means “Newtown” in French.
