In hong kong We need to memorize the whole song during the exam😂 Original poem: 唧唧復唧唧,木蘭當戶織。 不聞機杼聲,唯聞女嘆息。 問女何所思?問女何所憶? 女亦無所思,女亦無所憶。 昨夜見軍帖,可汗大點兵, 軍書十二卷,卷卷有爺名。 阿爺無大兒,木蘭無長兄, 願為市鞍馬,從此替爺征。 Alas oh alas! Alas oh alas! Mulan is weaving cloth of topmost class. Listen and you don't hear the spinning drone; You only hear the maiden sigh and moan. "Good lass, what thought has occupied your mind? Good lass, what thought can you not leave behind?" "I've nothing that has occupied my mind; I've nothing that I cannot leave behind. I saw the new recruiting lists last night; The Khan is summoning the men to fight. The twelve lists are literally the same; In every list there is my father's name. My dad does not have any grown-up son; I have no elder brother to carry the gun. I'll go and buy a stalwart horse and pad So as to go to battle for my dad." She buys a strong steed in the eastern market; She buys a saddle in the western market; She buys a bridle in the southern market; She buys a long whip in the northern market. She leaves her dearest parents by daylight, And stays by the Yellow River for the night. She can no longer hear her parents' sound, But only hears the rushing flood around. She leaves the Yellow River by daylight. Arrives at Mount Heishan at early night. She can no longer hear her parents' sound; She only hears the Tartar steeds around. She goes for miles and miles to join the war, And crosses hills and valleys with the crops. The northern wind resounds the watchmen's hail; The chilly moon shines on their coats of mail. Countless men die on the battlefields. While other men return with swords and shileds. Mulan receives an audience from the Khan, Who makes a huge grant to the valiant “man.” Mulan is praised and offered the highest post, And given piles of treasures she can boast. She says when asked what she would like to do, “High posts at court are not what I pursue. All I want is a camel with its crew To send me home to start my life anew.” On hearing that Mulan will soon be home, Her parents leave the courtyard arm in arm. On hearing that Mulan will soon be home, Her younger sister makes up to add charm. On hearing that Mulan will soon be home, Her younger brother butches pigs on the farm. She opens doors of chambers east and west And sits upon her bed to take a rest. She first takes off her warrior’s coat of mail And then puts on her female dress and veil. She stands by windows doing her long hair And faces mirrors painting her brows fair. When she meets her mates in female array, They stare at her in great surprise and say, “We fought for twelve years in the same brigade, But never knew that Mulan was a maid!” “The male rabbit hops and skips on the ground; The female rabbit winks and blinks around. When two rabbits scurry to and fro, Who knows which is the buck and which the doe?”

Hi Jon, this is a XV century poem from Spain, and also talks about a warrior maiden like Mulan, here in Mexico is in Elementary school textbooks also: THE WARRIOR MAIDEN BALLAD -"Announced are the wars of France against Aragon (Spain), How will I be able to go to war, sad, gray, and old and sinner?" -"God damn you, Countess, you gave me seven daughters and among them no male!" Then the youngest spoke but the oldest in wisdom: -"Do not curse my mother that I will go to war; You will give me your weapons and your battle horse". -"They will know you are a woman because of your bosoms which appear under the doublet". -"I will squeeze them, father, next to my heart." -“Daughter, you have very white hands, are not man's." -"I'll take off the gloves so the sun burns them." - "They will know you are a woman because of your eyes, there are no more beautiful anywhere". -“I will hide them, Father, as if I was a traitor." When was saying goodbye to everyone, she forgets the most important: -"What shall I call myself, father?" -"Don Martín from Aragon." -"And at the Royal Court, father, what shall I say?" -"I kiss your hand, good King, and may God keep the Court." Two years she was at war and nobody knew she was a woman If it was not for the king's son who was caught in her eyes. -"Wounded, I come, my mother, love will kill me, Don Martín's eyes are women's, not men's." -"You, my son, invite him to the town shops, If Don Martín is a woman, the fabrics will catch her eyes." Don Martín being discreet goes to look at the weapons: -“What a fine dagger is this, for fighting with the Moors!" -"Wounded, I come, my mother, love will kill me, Don Martín's eyes steal my soul when they look at me." -"You will take him, my son, to rest in the garden; If Don Martín is a woman will go to see the blooming almond trees." Don Martín does not see the flowers, goes and cuts a stick: -"Oh, what a perfect ash stick to drive the horse!" -"Wounded, I come, my mother, love will kill me." -"Son, throw the rings in his lap when playing: If Don Martín is a male, his knees will come together, But if separates them will show himself as a woman". Don Martín, always vigilant, joined the knees as if he knew. -"Wounded, I come, my mother, love will kill me; I can´t take Don Martín's eyes away from my thoughts." -"Invite him, my son, to swim in the baths." Everyone is undressing; Don Martín is very sad: -"Letters came to me, letters of great regret, My father the Count is very sick and about to die. I ask permission, my King, to visit him." -"Don Martín, I don't want to deny you that permit." Don Martin saddles the white horse and jumps in the saddle; And flies as swift as a hawk and says: -"Goodbye, goodbye, my good King and your royal Palace; For two years this loyal maiden served you well!" The King's son hears her and goes riding after her. -"Run, run, son of the King, you will not reach me Until my father's house if you want to find me there. Little Bells from my church, I hear you tolling; Little bridge, little bridge of the river of my town, Once I crossed you as a virgin maiden, as a virgin maiden I cross you again. Open the doors, my father, open them wide. Mother, take out the spinning wheel for me, I burn in the desire to spin, I knew well how to handle the weapons and the horse instead." Behind her, the King's son arrives at her Palace knocking at the door.
I disagree on Mulan (Disney) leaving to find herself. Disney did a pretty good job to show how it was an indirect development and also coincidence, that she found herself. You see, I think the emphasis on individualism plays a minor part, not the major part in her desicion to go to war (also in the Disney movie). Many critics emphasize the fact that her disney journey began out of the need to "find her true self". While the need was heavily implied, I think saving her father was her real goal and was also portrayed this way. Her whole fight with her father and seeing him suffer in his room triggered her to take action. I think it's not right to say she did this because she felt she did not fit in! Yes, she felt she did not fit in. Yes, it is emphasized, but Disney seemed to smartly portray her emancipation and indivudualism as a side effect in the quest to safe her father. It highlights feminism in a very subtle selfless way, which just makes the piece so perfect in my opinion.
Shipeiya She did find out who she was though. A warrior. Fierce courageous and brave. It emphasizes strength from being able to fight for who she loves. She’s an inner badass
Exactly this was perfect. It wasn't about her rejecting being a woman or self discovery, but obviously her father! It's heavily implied by not only his age but condition that he would've DIED! It wasn't an "I'm not fitting in with society so I'm going to take my dads place in a dangerous war". And she tackled problems still in a very feminine way (including being brave and creative), so agreed.
Since is a Chinesse tale is supposed to follow Confucius beliefs of family being important. I saw Mulan as doing that to help her family and save their honor
I remember my mom told me when the King asks Mulan what does she wants as a reward, she said all she wanted is to have a good meal with her father at home. This story is told to the kids as an example of being a good child towards her parents
Thank you, Jon, for presenting a POSITIVE piece based on Chinese literature during these super weird times. Prayers to all, including our neighbors in China.
It’s also actually a joke in Chinese! “Fa Ping” basically means a flower vase but it’s a joke because in Chinese it means ‘gay’. And I guess she was made fun of in the army because of that!! (Nothing against the Lgbtq community I just didnt know a nicer way to phrase it!)
8:17 they added this representation in the live-action Mulan movie. Early on the movie when they introduced Mulan, she was riding along with two rabbits who are running the same pace & Mulan exactly described them as the poet "How can they tell if I am he or she"

I actually really liked the first version. I'm a big ol sucker for happy endings and although in the movie she gets it more or less, i think the idea of your friends of 10 years finally knowing who you are and (hopefully) accepting you is quite a lovely ending!
There is one scene that made me love this movie immediately - because I'm a Dad. The way it was said, the way that it was felt. “The Greatest Gift And Honor Is Having You For A Daughter.”
her declaring "her father is the only one she'll ever be loyal to" from the retelling kinda made me tear up cause of how much it highlights mulan's great love for his dad which was the reason that her journey started in the first place (and was also the focus in disney's version). it's genuinely more about their father-daughter bond than it being a daughter submitting to his father in a traditional sense which aligns more with theme of the original passed on legend of mulan cause she was already skilled at home which was the result of how her dad trained her from a very young age. 💓
6:28 - I'm from Taiwan, learned the Mulan Ballad in school and yes, It's really more for poetics...no one go to FOUR markets to buy 4 different things and you can easily cover your tracks at the same market xD Further lines have similar "conceptual rhyming" -- e.g, "she opened the West side door, sat down on the East side bed"

There actually already is a live action movie about Mulan. It's from 2009 and focuses mainly on the story of her as a warrior. I'm pretty sure the makers of that one used the Ballad of Mulan as orientation as it's very similar to it.
Ok so like the thing where she buys equipment from different markets int he four direction is just to show how she had to look around a lot for the equipment and to show that soldiers back then had to buy their own stuff as it wasn't provided by the country. Another thing is that her parents calling her weren't about like nessisarly making a big deal out of her crossdressing and going to the army, but more like how the bids of farewell and them wishing her to be safe from her parents were replaced with sounds of the yellow river. And the art with the black mountain just kinda further describes her long journey .
I like the first version of Mulan’s messed up origin. But the second one freaked me out when Mulan committed suicide by slitting her own throat cause that had me feeling on my own throat
The first time I learned of the version where Mulan slit her throat was from a fellow draw 2 student in my past class. We were scrambling to research fairy tales to illustrate then with watercolor pencils, now that I know the tale , he did a pretty good job telling a story with one drawing
I absolutely love this series! That being said, the title of it honestly almost prevented me from ever watching it. I am glad I looked past it and clicked "view" that first time, even if I expected to feel more rage than knowledge. Thank you for doing your research and being entertaining while you share it with us.

Actually, the Tuoba are a subgroup of the Xianbei people, and so are the Rourans. Which means that Mulan's side and her enemies are distant cousins instead of 2 very different cultures. The Xianbeis are Turkic proto-Mongol people, which means that Mulan is most likely not Chinese.
I saw that two weeks ago and the first thing I said was " they really ripping my dude Jon like that" shit made my stomach hurt. Plus Screen Rant sucks. Them and Looper always talking about Endgame.
Your videos are so insightful and informative. I am a Disney fan and I think I have watched each of your Disney clips at least three times. You are one of the best UA-camrs!
Minor points to note: 7:41 Although surviving soldiers might traveled back to the capital, they don't all get to meet the emperor. The fact that Mulan got to meet the emperor in the first place signifies that she had made significant contributions in the war (It's like if you get invited to meet the queen / president, have had to have done something really big). Numbers like 9, 12, hundreds, thousands are used used loosely in ancient china to mean "a lot", so being given hundreds or thousands (not hundreds OF thousands) of gifts (it is not specified in chinese what is actually being given, it is more along the lines of "prized [subject] hundres of thousands", so it is more likely to be a weight measurement for some form of currency) can just be interpreted as "a lot of" reward, and 12 promotions can be interpreted as "a lot of" promotions. The target of these prizes and promotions are likely only to Mulan herself. Which made the fact that she gave them up to return to the family all the more impressive (孝, which means essentially to treat your parents and elder family member well was considered the No.1 virtue in Confucianism, Giving up wealth power and fame to go back home will be considered an ultimate display of virtue in that era) In terms of Sui Tang Romance, as the name suggest, it is 演义 "Romance", which literally means a Romanticized retelling. So I mean it's a cool story but since it out right said that the stories where changed by calling it Romance, it is not cannon.
Jon Solo deserves more subscribers. It's sad how corporations do no research but get millions of views while people who are passionate,do the research and present them in such a pleasing way don't get the best recognition

Here in Brazil, we have a "real" Mulan. Maria Quiteria de Jesus. In 1821, she scaped from her farmhouse and assume a male identity, then join a army and fought in the In the independence war. She is the first woman, here in Brazil, to fight in a war, and is consider a independence hero She also "steal" the name of a familiar. Her brother in law name, Medeiros. Cut her hair and use his armour She was exposed a few weeks after join the army, her father found her and explained that she was a Woman, and shouldn't be in war. But the captain decided to keep her, cause it was a very imported war and they needed her, cause she was the most disciple and had an amazing ability with weapons. After winning many fights, she was promoted as cadet. She inspired many womans to fight too. She even fought once with a hole female army
She escaped because her stepmother didn't accept Maria personality. Maria was very masculine (the stereotype of masculinity, that is) She always loved to hunt, fishing... so she had some experience and ability even before joining the army

Alas oh alas! Alas oh alas!
Mulan is weaving cloth of topmost class.
Listen and you don't hear the spinning drone;
You only hear the maiden sigh and moan.
"Good lass, what thought has occupied your mind?
Good lass, what thought can you not leave behind?"
"I've nothing that has occupied my mind;
I've nothing that I cannot leave behind.
I saw the new recruiting lists last night;
The Khan is summoning the men to fight.
The twelve lists are literally the same;
In every list there is my father's name.
My dad does not have any grown-up son;
I have no elder brother to carry the gun.
I'll go and buy a stalwart horse and pad
So as to go to battle for my dad."
She buys a strong steed in the eastern market;
She buys a saddle in the western market;
She buys a bridle in the southern market;
She buys a long whip in the northern market.
She leaves her dearest parents by daylight,
And stays by the Yellow River for the night.
She can no longer hear her parents' sound,
But only hears the rushing flood around.
She leaves the Yellow River by daylight.
Arrives at Mount Heishan at early night.
She can no longer hear her parents' sound;
She only hears the Tartar steeds around.
She goes for miles and miles to join the war,
And crosses hills and valleys with the crops.
The northern wind resounds the watchmen's hail;
The chilly moon shines on their coats of mail.
Countless men die on the battlefields.
While other men return with swords and shileds.
Mulan receives an audience from the Khan,
Who makes a huge grant to the valiant “man.”
Mulan is praised and offered the highest post,
And given piles of treasures she can boast.
She says when asked what she would like to do,
“High posts at court are not what I pursue.
All I want is a camel with its crew
To send me home to start my life anew.”
On hearing that Mulan will soon be home,
Her parents leave the courtyard arm in arm.
On hearing that Mulan will soon be home,
Her younger sister makes up to add charm.
On hearing that Mulan will soon be home,
Her younger brother butches pigs on the farm.
「雄兔腳撲朔,雌兔眼迷離;
She opens doors of chambers east and west
And sits upon her bed to take a rest.
She first takes off her warrior’s coat of mail
And then puts on her female dress and veil.
She stands by windows doing her long hair
And faces mirrors painting her brows fair.
When she meets her mates in female array,
They stare at her in great surprise and say,
“We fought for twelve years in the same brigade,
But never knew that Mulan was a maid!”
“The male rabbit hops and skips on the ground;
The female rabbit winks and blinks around.
When two rabbits scurry to and fro,
Who knows which is the buck and which the doe?”
Thank you! I had checked a children's book of this out from the library a couple of years ago to read to my daughter, and I somehow thought that she wasn't in disguise and that she was always known in the army to be a woman. I guess I remembered wrong!

@Mayo they just bitch at Jon for it and threaten him with lawyers.
Jon can report them cuz rn I tried reporting the video but theres one for a right ab content. And if stealing.
it honestly wouldn't annoy me so much if they at least had accurate information and cited their sources. It's not like I have the right to be the ONLY one discussing the history of folklore and mythology, but those idiots are just taking half-assed notes and spreading misinformation in the process! This is despite them having an entire TEAM of people to work on every single video. It's pathetic. The Things and channels like them are one of the most aggressive forms of cancer on this platform.
Hi Jon, this is a XV century poem from Spain, and also talks about a warrior maiden like Mulan, here in Mexico is in Elementary school textbooks also: THE WARRIOR MAIDEN BALLAD
-"Announced are the wars of France against Aragon (Spain),
How will I be able to go to war, sad, gray, and old and sinner?"
-"God damn you, Countess,
you gave me seven daughters and among them no male!"
Then the youngest spoke but the oldest in wisdom:
-"Do not curse my mother that I will go to war;
You will give me your weapons and your battle horse".
-"They will know you are a woman because of your bosoms which appear under the doublet".
-"I will squeeze them, father, next to my heart."
-“Daughter, you have very white hands, are not man's."
-"I'll take off the gloves so the sun burns them."
- "They will know you are a woman because of your eyes, there are no more beautiful anywhere".
-“I will hide them, Father, as if I was a traitor."
When was saying goodbye to everyone, she forgets the most important:
-"What shall I call myself, father?" -"Don Martín from Aragon."
-"And at the Royal Court, father, what shall I say?"
-"I kiss your hand, good King, and may God keep the Court."
Two years she was at war and nobody knew she was a woman
If it was not for the king's son who was caught in her eyes.
-"Wounded, I come, my mother, love will kill me,
Don Martín's eyes are women's, not men's."
-"You, my son, invite him to the town shops,
If Don Martín is a woman, the fabrics will catch her eyes."
Don Martín being discreet goes to look at the weapons:
-“What a fine dagger is this, for fighting with the Moors!"
-"Wounded, I come, my mother, love will kill me,
Don Martín's eyes steal my soul when they look at me."
-"You will take him, my son, to rest in the garden;
If Don Martín is a woman will go to see the blooming almond trees."
Don Martín does not see the flowers, goes and cuts a stick:
-"Oh, what a perfect ash stick to drive the horse!"
-"Wounded, I come, my mother, love will kill me."
-"Son, throw the rings in his lap when playing:
If Don Martín is a male, his knees will come together,
But if separates them will show himself as a woman".
Don Martín, always vigilant, joined the knees as if he knew.
-"Wounded, I come, my mother, love will kill me;
I can´t take Don Martín's eyes away from my thoughts."
-"Invite him, my son, to swim in the baths."
Everyone is undressing; Don Martín is very sad:
-"Letters came to me, letters of great regret,
My father the Count is very sick and about to die.
I ask permission, my King, to visit him."
-"Don Martín, I don't want to deny you that permit."
Don Martin saddles the white horse and jumps in the saddle;
And flies as swift as a hawk and says:
-"Goodbye, goodbye, my good King and your royal Palace;
For two years this loyal maiden served you well!"
The King's son hears her and goes riding after her.
-"Run, run, son of the King, you will not reach me
Until my father's house if you want to find me there.
Little Bells from my church, I hear you tolling;
Little bridge, little bridge of the river of my town,
Once I crossed you as a virgin maiden, as a virgin maiden I cross you again.
Open the doors, my father, open them wide.
Mother, take out the spinning wheel for me, I burn in the desire to spin,
I knew well how to handle the weapons and the horse instead."
Behind her, the King's son arrives at her Palace knocking at the door.
woah isn't this good?
That's a great take on the film, thank you for sharing your thoughts. :)
I think it's there to show that woman Can be warriors to at that time.

Hi
her declaring "her father is the only one she'll ever be loyal to" from the retelling kinda made me tear up cause of how much it highlights mulan's great love for his dad which was the reason that her journey started in the first place (and was also the focus in disney's version). it's genuinely more about their father-daughter bond than it being a daughter submitting to his father in a traditional sense which aligns more with theme of the original passed on legend of mulan cause she was already skilled at home which was the result of how her dad trained her from a very young age. 💓

I knew Screenrant stole content from you, they steal from smaller creators often.

I like the first version of Mulan’s messed up origin. But the second one freaked me out when Mulan committed suicide by slitting her own throat cause that had me feeling on my own throat
it was even sadder that it was probably a reality in those times
It is a retelling of a folklore, so it does not count as origin. Nobody studied this version anyways.
I can't believe her mother was okay with her new husband wanted her daughter as his second wife
Is this a movie?
The first time I learned of the version where Mulan slit her throat was from a fellow draw 2 student in my past class. We were scrambling to research fairy tales to illustrate then with watercolor pencils, now that I know the tale , he did a pretty good job telling a story with one drawing
I absolutely love this series! That being said, the title of it honestly almost prevented me from ever watching it.

Damn you already know about the coronavirus to everybody knows this in the world good work for telling origin story still biggest fan
Huh
Wha?
Minor points to note:
7:41 Although surviving soldiers might traveled back to the capital, they don't all get to meet the emperor.
Which made the fact that she gave them up to return to the family all the more impressive (孝, which means essentially to treat your parents and elder family member well was considered the No.1 virtue in Confucianism, Giving up wealth power and fame to go back home will be considered an ultimate display of virtue in that era)
In terms of Sui Tang Romance, as the name suggest, it is 演义 "Romance", which literally means a Romanticized retelling. So I mean it's a cool story but since it out right said that the stories where changed by calling it Romance, it is not cannon.
good note on the numbers!
Please do an updated version comparing the new Mulan live action to the history?
Yes
Jon Solo deserves more subscribers. It's sad how corporations do no research but get millions of views while people who are passionate,do the research and present them in such a pleasing way don't get the best recognition

Here in Brazil, we have a "real" Mulan.
Maria Quiteria de Jesus. In 1821, she scaped from her farmhouse and assume a male identity, then join a army and fought in the In the independence war.
She is the first woman, here in Brazil, to fight in a war, and is consider a independence hero
She also "steal" the name of a familiar. Her brother in law name, Medeiros. Cut her hair and use his armour
She was exposed a few weeks after join the army, her father found her and explained that she was a Woman, and shouldn't be in war.
Maria was very masculine (the stereotype of masculinity, that is)
She always loved to hunt, fishing... so she had some experience and ability even before joining the army
Awesome!!
