    Amazing video Geoff, I always love begonia videos there doesn’t seem to be as many on UA-cam I look forward to seeing al the new types you are planning on bringing in, I have over 30 so far they are addictive, I think another plant to try would be coleus it has amazing colours and it would be good to see how it does over the winter too as is is supposed to be slightly difficult during winter. My remedy for fungus gnats and fruit flies is to invest in some drosera. I breed feeder bugs and feed them leftover veggies and fruits so fruit flies are always around until I picked up some drosera capensis. The flies are now all gone. Very effective. Natures bug catcher. It’s irresistible to them. 🙌🏻

    Honestly my favourite plant , i personally have always liked them but I didn’t quite understand how much variety the family has… I came across the ‘Bewitched’ variety at my work (Allensmore) and spent about 2/3 hours looking out for different varieties & my mind was repeatedly blown… there is something for everyone, and there’s some really striking varieties that stand out strong even amongst the prettiest of flowers.

    Hi Geoff! I just might have to get one of those Luxurians and give them a try! Try mosquito dunks or bits in your watering cans, use it every watering even once you've got rid of them all. I've been using dunks for decades and it really works great. I have zero gnats.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 роки тому

      Hey Tommy - you definitely should get one, it's a great plant. Funnily enough I just bought something similar to the Mosquito Bits from 'The Mosquito Company'. I was trying to be organic with the neem oil but after 5 weeks of spraying with it and watering with it - I still have fungus gnats - although not as many as before. I've now lost patience and am going down the chemical route. The Mosquito Bits you refer to are really expensive over here - £27 for a very small packet. (The dunks are well over £30 for half a dozen - although I might just have to cough up if these tablet thingies don't work!)

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 WOW, that's a lot of money. The dunks over here are $10 for a 6 pack. I use one quarter of one in my watering can. It's BT so get some BT and add it to the watering can.

    Hi! Did you ever find out whether or not the begonia mazae var. nigricans was a cane or rhizome?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 роки тому

      It has a thin, spreading rhizome but in growth habit it's quite shrubby. It's important to remember that the Begonia groups are very loose and not at all 'official' scientific classifications. Most people use the group names and descriptions that the American Begonia Society came up with!

    This video was informative for me and gave me a new perspective. The begonia I am growing now is Begonia bowerae var. nigramarga and I thought it was simply a wild species from Mexico. However, the boundaries between wild species and garden plants are not so clear-cut and their study must be equally complex and difficult.
    Anyway, I was also happy to see that listada,silver jewel, which are my 'current' top three favourite begonias, happened to be on the show. Thank you!

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 роки тому +1

      I'm really pleased you enjoyed it, Bryum. Begonia bowerae var. nigramarga does indeed appear to be a speices from Mexico - and was used to create many of the other eyelash Begonia hybrids. I'd love a few more of these varieties as I think they have much to offer. I hope you found other Begonias you liked too. I'm working on some videos of some recent purchases - really weird Begonias I think you'll love!
