You should put in perches. It’ll encourage insectivorous birds to come visit and help control you bugs. They might even help out in your garden, unless you use your chickens for that. There’s a video floating around by a wildlife photographer, forgot his name, who put a large pond in his yard and showed how the different levels of predation work together.

I recommend you just wait for the frogs or toads. They come on their own to all ponds big or small here in Louisiana. It being so much dryer in San Diego, I would research the native frogs/toads. They make WONDERFUL sounds, eat many predictor and garden pest insects, and are cute as all get out! Way better garden pals than turtles. Just saying 🐸

Those marginal plants are the workhorse of the plantings, removing more nitrates than lilies. I have a video about different types of aquatic plants. You could also have Chad install a booster pump so you can use pond water for irrigation and then top off with hose water. (Water changes) Ponds are so fantastic to “sweeten” hose water. Also, maybe some bananas planted in the margins to shade the pond. Also, the automatic dosing system is great for newer ponds.

I’d also highly recommend getting some water test kits, literally just like soil tests. They don’t have to be expensive or complex, just something to give you a rough idea of what’s going on down there.

I love Koi! Love your pond! So sorry you lost the first two. The new koi should acclimate well. You've always done such great work! I appreciate the hard work you have put into it. I'm a newer UA-camr in zone 6, but I've been gardening since I was a small child, and have been sharing my gardening knowledge with our local area for years, (everyone was asking me to start a yt channel so I finally did). I can tell you it always brings me so much joy to see your gardens start to blossom and grow while we still have snow up here. My outside garden doesn't start until end of April if we are lucky, May or June if weather is cold. You have amazing successes in your garden, I love it! Thank you for your great videos and hard work!❤️❤️

Kevin have you ever considered keeping a planted aquarium? It's a nice way to bring plant and aquatic life indoors and with your wealth of knowledge about plant life you'd be well disposed to growing all sorts of cool aquatic plants. You could also play around with keeping smaller "patio ponds" in whisky barrels or plastic totes, and keeping nano fish such as guppies, Japanese rice fish, or platies. You can check out Serpa Design's channel for more info, it's pretty amazing what you can create!

Turtles!!! I suppose when you start them young in the pond and place a center piece basking area they can be trained pretty much to recognize the pond as their home. I've a cooter and asian yellow ponds (they dont grow beyond 6inches and 5inches respectively) and they prefer to eat in the waters. When i put them out in a basin to bask outside my lanai and escape they still go back to where my tank is located. You may just need to secure yiur service gate with about 10 0r 12 inch high panels so they won't go towards the street.

My guppies in my small pond all passed away. I’m going to go with koi or goldfish in May. Lucky for me, my pond is a 30 gallon whiskey barrel liner that I put in a half barrel planter. I originally had it in the ground but it froze and cracked on me so I’m repurposing the broken one into a planter. Call me lazy but I don’t want to dig it up.
Do the clarifying solutions harm birds? I wanted to treat the water but I’m unsure on the safety for critters that use my pond as a water source.

As someone that absolutely loves Japanese koi fish, a little disappointed in the wrong information he gave you on their classifications. Mainly the asagi. Asagis are not scaleless. If it was a scaleless asagi it would be a shusui. And scaleless types are called doitsu. But that fish is not an asagi. Not even a shusui, just a doitsu variety. When they have shiny scales it’s called gin rin. I have a great book if interested in Japanese koi fish. And as for your water clarity, if you add UV light to your filtration, it’ll lose that green tint. I have koi fish for my aquaponic system and am open for any kind of conversation regarding the fish.
And fish should really be quarantined first for parasites, but if unrealistic, don’t dump their water into your water, just the fish.
And make a video choosing your future fish! It’s the best part!!
    Thanks for the videos!
