- Make your own raccoon skin hat with tail. Styled like the Daniel Boone Raccoon Fur Hat and the Davey Crockett hats of the 50's the most popular hat sold in the US.
Kids and adults love these hats. Step by step you'll see what you can do. When using a self made hat form I usually make it one inch larger than head measurement, this allows for lining and if it I make it adjustable with the drawstring inside then you want to allow for that growth sizing in young adults, or if you want to use a beanie under the hat. You could always add a tie string or strap.
Watch my how to make a hat form video , so you can get ready to start.
That is actually pretty neat! Ive never seen a "no sew" hat done this way! It looks really nice too!
Deanna, This is an amazing video. I have several hides and wanted to make hats with them, but have never been able to see a pattern that I liked very well. I love the idea of molding the hat. I never thought about that, even though I have molded other leather projects. I really appreciate that you shared this. I am super excited to do my hats now. I really like how you tapered the hats toward the back. That is actually what I wanted so that the fur actually comes down over the ear. I appreciate that you showed how you do the lining. I'm going to watch that part of the video several times until I get it right. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING
Chuck, thanks for your comments. I think leaving the sides, back portion a bit longer to blend into tail, offers a bit more wind protection. On kids' hats, you could also add a set of ties at sides to help stay on.
Large fur hat manufacturers have wooden blocks they mold the hats on and use a heavier liquid starch on the inside to keep shape. Besides adding fabric interfacing. I think the hat form is a good option. I have a video on Bobcat hat , and the raccoon face is done the same way to add to your hat. Check it out. Subscribe thanks
Deanna, 2 questions. 1) did you close the tail as it was split, or leave it open and 2) do you have any videos that show how to sew the liner in by hand? I don't have a fur machine and this will be my first hat, so I'm not sure how to stich the top part of the hat to the skin.
I think I did close the tail partially about 3 inches down from the hat edge, by hand . If hand sewing in the lining I'd turn the bottom edge of lining , you could try starting at center front sew each side part way along the edge you decided to use on the fur, when you get close to the center back leave about 4 inches at center back of lining and hat and turn the hat / lining inside out pull it thru the opening.. then smooth out your hat, tuck the lining in at the center back and slip stich closed, you could hand tack the lining at the front edge to keep it straight. and along the edge as needed in places if necessary
Very nice!!! I have been making coin hats for a couple years now and I NEVER thought of making one with one piece. You said this was a kids size? Have you made adult sized hats this way?
Yes I just used a larger size hat form. Usually adult Iis size 23 1/2 to 24 , still only need same size skin
@@McCormickLeatherandFurs Thank you very much!
@@McCormickLeatherandFurs is there any book that you would recommend that has any further hat patterns?
@@Mexicanredneck9 I don't know any, you can take a cloth hat rip apart , and copy it for a pattern.
How would you do this to have the head on? Sew the just the head on separately or incorporate it into the band?
Head is done separately, watch my bobcat hat video. The raccoon face is done the same way and after its shaped you sew on before lining goes on usually, but can be done after lining is on.
