Let's Make a Coonskin Cap

- If you want to make a coonskin cap that drapes down your back you will need 2 raccoon pelts. If you're wanting to do the classic Davy Crockett style you can usually get by with 1...it really depends on how big your coon is and how big your head is!
I remember many years ago in the Austin , Texas newspaper, there was an article with a picture of a guy wearing a hat made from a cat skin. Lots of people were unhappy about that.
😂 wow
As a texan if you hear anything from Austin do not let that blemish the rest of texas's image because to me they are not Texans lol they are weird
That cat got into the wrongs mans chickens
@@TheRoseCurseExactly, they Liberals..they must REPENT.
*REPENTANCE FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS*
Back in the days when you advertised fur buying prices in the paper, you could find listings for cat but it's not really a thing anymore
Oh yeah, 1 1/2 racoon pelts, I've got those in the pantry next to the flour! LOL Loving this video man. Thank you for making it
😅😂
bro this was actually pretty lit and it for real for real inspired me to just do it.
Heck ya!
Excellent video. I hunted a raccoon, skinned it, tanned it and then failed on the sewing part because I had no idea how to do it. Now I have a plan. Thanks
💯 glad to help!
Started wearing one of these to school one that my dad made a while back. I get a lot of looks but im all for it.
Amazing 🔥
I might use a silver fox. Definitely using the face too! That's amazing, really! I saw your book and ordered it too. Nice!
That would be cool!!
Well done sir. You deserve it. You are talented
🙌
I love this. I would love to see more of this type of content from you in the future
Good to know!
By far the easiest method I've seen. Thanks!
Glad to help!
Great video and awesome looking hat man 👊
I'm making my 1st hat soon, got a great deal oh 8 beautiful cinnamon raccoon furs🍻
That is awesome!!
Looks great! I had one in elementary school without the face. Not sure whatever happened to it...probably still at my parents somewhere lol 🦝
Excellent work and video
Thank you!
That thing looks Awesome!! I have a fake fur one now, but I want to trap a couple of raccoons this season and make one. Thanks for the video brother!!
you totally should!!
Love this! Thanks for the guidance on a pattern - not exactly how my brain would have done it but now that I see it, it's certainly how ill do it.
💪
Nice shirt troll here fellow Michigander 👋🏿 liked and subbed and gonna follow this tutorial 👍🏿
🙌
Definitely gonna make on of these when i get the chance
Awesome!
Nice job…. Thanks for sharing ✌️
💪
Love your channel!! ❤

Awesome!! 🦨
I just set 2 traps (my first time) n i feel like a kid waitin on christmas. Thanks for idea✌🏾
Awesome. Good luck!!
@@HawkenHorse Thank you! Got my first this morning! Skinned out face n tail with hide. Gon hickory smoke n stew meat. Thanks again🙋🏾♀️
@@JacinthFlowerFly great job!
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Can you tell me what materials are used here? Deaf community here- like the spray being used to glue that cloth down? And the name of that cloth?
This is a raccoon pelt and the glue is Elmer’s spray adhesive.
Ill cut my sides a bit bigger. I want my ears covered. But great video dude! Thanks! My interior will be rabbit fur though
Thank you and good luck!
I will make one of a rabbit because in central Mexico there are no raccoons,Should the circular cap have the same circumference of the straight part that measures the head?
I made the top bigger only because of the raccoon face. But if you’re doing a rabbit I’d probably just cut it without the face at the same circumference. 👍
Where can I get that book!
I found one on eBay!
What stitch did you use for this
I used a back stitch.
@@HawkenHorse thanks
Do you treat the leather (inside of hat) with oil?
I haven’t yet but I likely will. It’s good to treat it annually.
@@HawkenHorse what type of oil do you recommend?
Heard leather homey is gr8 for it
@@jerseyhomestead6812
Definitely turned out awesome with the face showing. Excellent job.
Thank you!
I was looking to buy one actually! I saw one at this store I like. I was wondering if there’s a way to wash it? If so, how and when should I?
I definitely wouldn’t machine wash it. Spot washing would be best. And then the leather should be oiled up good afterwards or it’ll dry real stiff.
@@HawkenHorse okayyy thank you
Hey man. Recently discovered your channel, watched a few videos, and listened to the band on Spotify. Did you make all that music yourself? I love it. It’s hard to find that kind of “mountain man folk” music.
Thanks so much! Yep, all my songs!
@@HawkenHorse You don’t happen to have a merch store do you? Not to be a crazy fan and all, but I really do like the overall theme of the music. It’s relaxing and folkish. Music you could hike or fish to, while still being deep in its subject matter. A man who’s content to die on a mountainside with a bible and a rifle, and no one knows what became of him, but he knows he lived a full life. That’s the “spirit of the west” in my mind.
@@morgan_morris1997 thanks so much! That’s definitely the theme I’m going for! Yes I have merch at hawkenhorse.com
@@HawkenHorse Definitely gotta get me a Coonalope shirt lol. I think you’d like “Man Vs History”’s channel. He does a lot of the same content you do, has his own shop as well, and does a lot of historical accuracy videos.
@@morgan_morris1997 I’ll check that one out!!
How long has the hat lasted
Still holding up!
@@HawkenHorse trying to make one with skunk , slightly scorched it on the smoking step
What is the name and author of that book?

Yep watch your'n !!
You look like a young Bearclaw.
I’ll take that all day!
me when i craft the racoon hat:
🦝
I know I'm a little late in the conversation but, could ya make the sides a tad bit longer so the material would cover your ears?
You definitely could! Especially if your coon is big enough. I’ve got a big noggin 😆
You don't suppose oil on your needle would help
That’s a good idea
You are fucking awesome dude thanks a lot for this. What is that book called where you had found that pattern? I spent almost an hour looking online until I came across this video
The book has been reprinted under a different name. Look up “Traditional Skills of the Mountain Men” by David Montgomery. Glad to help!
Hey are you from the UP?
I’m not from the UP but I’ve spent a lot of time up there!
Se ven mas tradicional canadiense pero como soy de México no puedo cazando un conejo pero me gusta como lo hace un gorro de mapache saludos desde México también Canadá 🇨🇦🇲🇽
✌️howdy!
@@HawkenHorse Thank you
Can I have it plz
😁
And you watch yorn!
💯
You don't use scissors to cut furs Bud.
Haha I needed precision
What do you use
a knife and cut from the leather side, not the fur side.@@NotPearse
Just grow a fade and listen to wutang
😂
