The all-new Subaru BRZ, like it's Toyota sibling, takes an already succecssful formula and only improves it, with a more powerful, rev-happy engine, an even lower center of gravity, better steering and shifter feel, and at a still very affordable price. But the sum is greater than the parts, and the new BRZ, even at altitude, is shockingly quick up a canyon road.

The New Subaru BRZ is Shockingly Quick Up a Canyon Road - One Take
#subarubrz
#BRZ
Kristen: "It's got great induction noise!"
Subaru Artificial Sound Engineers: "Everything is going as planned, prepare the clones."
Exactly.
😂😂😂
As long as it's better than the old model, which sounded terrible.
The Active Sound really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I ended up turning it off but that was because I need it quieter so I can talk on the phone
Is it me or does the BRZ’s engine note sound a little less artificial than the GR 86? Also Kristen’s new hair is an excellent g-meter.
Sup Topher! I'm not sure about the differences in the engine noise but I'd opt to have the dealer turn it off.
I had noticed how much toyota really like pumped in noise in the 86 and supra. Kinda ruins the car cause the noise sounds so fake and gamey.
I wonder how much is artificial
it kinda sounds like a mild K24 to me
@@MadelnMachines you can tell by comparing the drive-by footage with the in-car one. It's all fake. On the outside the tires are louder than the engine. Awful.
Owning a first Gen gt86 and seeing the successor makes me extremely happy to know Toyota and Subaru still care about driving.
what u think about 370z
@@nico3727 I liked it the few times I’ve driven it on track, but you can tell it’s not as connected and definitely not as light as the 86. Still, it’s faster than the twins, but not as fun (in my opinion). Still a great car if you choose to go with it!
Matt cruising at 70-95mph through the canyons in 3rd & 4th gear like it’s nothing while giving great commentary, much respect.
Pretty nuts. Even 60 up in those canyons feels sketch to me
Zack looking remarkably cute today
As to the knee issue, there are simple add on you could get. Silly that they would take them away though.
Yeah in the first gen they added them in the second model year, idk why they would not think to put them in this new one haha
lmao
This the comment 😂
Gotta save something for a minor refresh or a new model year
I can envision aftermarket (Perrin?) coming up with some knee pads. The lumbar support is a bigger issue for older drivers and longer drives. I have a '17 Limited, and that aspect of the seats is sorely lacking. The seat tends to push your torso forward into a "C" shape. I resolved it by using a small half roll (half of a cylinder shape, flat on the back) lumbar support. Would be interesting to see someone drive this new model at night and see how the headlights work. On my '17 they are utterly bizzare. Apparently there is no true high or low beam. Low beam is achieved by means of a shutter (think "eye lid") that drops down over the top half of the light source. This creates an absolutely bizzare cut off in which you have lots of light where you have light, then complete blackout above a very sharp horizontal line. It is absolute crap for hilly driving. I hope they rectified this. The engineers in charge of that should have been fired and it should not have been allowed to go to production wtih that set-up. Unfortunately it is not something you discover during a test drive, as most often those happen during daylight hours. I'd sure as hell drive a new one at night to see how well the adaptive lights work.
Few cars which Matt has no complaints on the driving experience (aside from ergonomic complaints). This was one of them. I really want one.
Watch his drive with the Crawford brz.
Get an 86 over the brz imo. 86 is a little more tail happy
@@andrewgarcia3136 you can't get one yet, brz's are already on boats to dealers.
Winding canyon roads are also one of the best experiences in the 86/brz. This review shows this car in its natural element
I had a 2013 FRS and loved that car. Just did suspension, tires, tune and exhaust and it felt perfect. I enjoyed driving it more than my 400whp 2016 built STI. Now both are gone and I'm getting the itch again. I want the new Nissan Z but the more I see the new GR86 and BRZ, I'm starting to have second thoughts.
You would be so surprised at how much weight you can drop by installing aftermarket exhaust, coilovers, lightweight battery, wheels, and brembo or AP racing calipers. My 1st gen 86 was 2650 lbs and it had a turbo and front mount intercooler. Insane fun
Totally agree. How much did your upgrades cost without the turbo?
Yes but theres a reason why its not like that stock. High performance parts cost a lot of money and add up
Picking up my GR86 base tomorrow morning after waiting for 11 months :')
This car is the formula of a true driver’s car; lightweight + RWD + manual + naturally aspirated
I guess the RUF Yellowbird and all GT2s aren't true driver's cars by that then. Audi quattro, Renault 5 Turbo, etc
@@papa_pt
Some of those are definitely driver’s cars too, in their own rights, but the rawest & simpliest formula is what I listed. It’s a formula that has & will always work.
Just like GMA T50! But it is even more lighter, 3x more power, much more revs, 3x more cylinders. Most epic drivers car ever.
Man a GT3 would be sooo nice
Why this isn't turbocharged is beyond me??! Another 100hp, still an immensely enjoyable 'drivers' car.
It be cool to do more guest one takes in the canyon. Obviously still keep Zach, but an occasional passenger with Segura, Liberman, etc would be fun to watch.
Segura especially lol
With Cammisa 👌🏾
I enjoyed Kristen's comments, and I always enjoy Cammisa. It's nice to get another viewpoint without having to watch a separate video. Bring on the crossover content, so long as it doesn't break a winning formula.
I’m going to push for Tom and Bert to do one of Cleetus’ ppv. They would have had a ton of fun at the Danger Ranger and I think Garret might have a future as a standup.
2nd this
I’ve owned multiple WRX’s and now I have a BRZ. Hands down, it is way more fun to drive than any other car that I’ve owned.
same!! i traded my wrx for mine
My E36 M3 was the perfect car to me. My current 13 frs is good but slow and unrefined. This seems to be the perfect trade off and probably my next car.
same here. my track e36 m3 handling is perfect but it has some reliability issues now. im thinking of test drive brz and get it if it feels as good.
Gee how exciting
Loved my E36 but even meticulously taken care of, they used a lot of glue and it's coming undone. Went to an S2K, but if this generation of BRZ/GR was available I'd be really torn. It might not be much slower than a tired, high mile S50B30US or S52B32US.
@@6mtzhp55 I did the same thing and regretted getting rid of the 36.
@@GearheadSynthesis I still love the memories with it, but I'd want an Estoril Blue manual and those just will never be worth what they ask today (to me) since inflation happened. Maybe if a recession collapses the market I will put one in my garage.
I've not seen a single bad review of BRZ/GR86. I have it slated as my next purchase.
I have a boosted first gen and I gotta say, still absolutely love it. It solves all the problems the original had and with the right mods you only suffer from the added weigh, which is mostly nullified from the added power. This new gen BRZ looks great, but I much prefer the old style.
The moment Matt said he thinks the steering wheel is a little small, man I would love to see you drive a newer Peugeot with their tiny steering wheels.
Thank Subaru and Toyota for bringing back the 90's vibe and refining it into a modern weapon.
Thanks to the LA Canyons mod in Assetto Corsa I can recognize where they're going 😁
same hehe
alternatively you could move to the base of the mountains where they film and experience it yourself. Not that I did that.
Do you know where they are? I'm in socal and would LOVE to take that drive.
Kristen is great. Happy to see her on video.
As a former owner of 1st gen BRZ, really excited to drive the new one. Plan to buy one of the special editions with STi parts once they are out.
Watching this because I worked on an older BRZ today and enjoyed the drive outside of the things the owner didn't fix. Feels alot like a bigger S2000 but the power doesn't have to be wrapped out where you feel like you're hurting the car to have fun. Not my A4 but would buy 1 given the right circumstances.
I've been blown away by how amazing the lights are on some modern cars and how terrible they were on others. As someone who spends half their commute in darkness, this is great information to know about a car. VERY rare to hear anyone comment on something so critical.
This should be a massive hit, well done Toyota/subaru for catering to the enthusiast
Been waiting for this one, the only car I'm looking at right now.
Same this thing is very exciting. Can’t decide if I wanna go fresh off the lot or used in 1 year
@@normanparthiban4383 buy new dude. Buying used tells nothing to the brands to keep making cars like these.
@@RmB9104 I agree. that’s the dilemma. I’m not super wealthy and I just graduated college a year ago so I’m trying to be careful with money
@@normanparthiban4383 get new. Used car market is crazy and use 1st gens are going for more than new 2nd gens. Get a car you know hasn’t been beat on imo. Unless you get an absolutely amazing deal
@@normanparthiban4383 I get it. I'm the same LOL. But if last gen is anything to go by, I'd expect the car to be for sold 9 years. Plenty of room for money saving.
This is like the ultimate weekend track day platform on a budget. With the increased rigidity and center of gravity as well as keeping the weight down and getting the 2.4, you could build this thing up in a hurry. Upgrade the brakes, throw on some 2 or 3-way coilovers and maybe a few bracing components and/or aero and wring out a little more power and you are good to go for some serious lap times. It would take on cars with significantly more power and much bigger price tags while still comfortably getting you to work during the week.
Let's take your statement and test it...
$30,000 car + $3,000 BBK + $3,000 coilovers + $2,000 for ~25hp + $1500 aero + $1500 better wheels/tires = $41,000
This is assuming you do all the work yourself. OR...just buy a 987.2 Cayman S and save the rest for track time.
@@heyhayhay247 Even if you did find one in great condition for that price, you would still have to track prep it. This will cost even more since the car will be at least moderately used. And maintenance and repair costs (even if you do it yourself, which you would absolutely have to in this case) would be SIGNIFICANTLY higher for the Cayman S. It would add up exponentially faster than the BRZ and the longer you track it, the less budget friendly it will be. In 10 years when this BRZ is the same age as that Cayman S, it certainly won't cost $30k (if you want to compare it to a 10 year old Porsche.) There are many more budget friendly builds if you are on a tighter budget than either of these cars, especially if you are turning to the used market, but if you are looking for a brand new car to have fun with on the track, this would check a lot of boxes.
@@PapaTroll86 the Cayman is going to need brake pads and maybe some minor cooling upgrades at most. FCP Euro's insane lifetime warranty makes maintenance cost a nonissue. Then, in 10 years, the same Cayman will be worth 2 or 3 times what the BRZ will. All that mod money spent on the BRZ won't be worth anything on the used market.
“You can spend that and not even look back about it”…. I might just do that one day soon!
I didn't buy the last one, bought the NDrf instead. THIS is the improvement I was waiting for.
Hey, Kristen is back. Cool.
I nearly bought a less gen BRZ (in yellow interestingly enough) But I opted instead for WRX that was going for nearly the same exact price because of the extra performance and room. This new BRZ is totally on my radar for my next car purchase
I like the sass, this was a fun one!
Bro how did you wst h a 20 min video in 3 mins lmao
Awesome! The last time Kristen was in a TST video was the 720s spider video if memory serves me well.
(I'm aware she's on the pod often)
Wait is this the Kristin Lee that did that amazing E60 M5 video on Cape Cod all those years ago then ended up writing articles in the big time. If so, yay!
Matt I’m 5’11” 185lbs and I had issues in the 2013 BRZ I tracked because no knee pads. So much so that I bought aftermarket ones. So your point is valid even for “smaller dudes”. :)
Great episode, and more Kristen in the car please. I found myself agreeing with her a lot and you two have a good chemistry. It’s clear that your friends and can share open and honest opinions.
I feel like if this came out in 1994, collectors would be paying huge bucks for it now. Definitely a future classic.
Yeah man I can see these cars going for a lot of money in like 15-20 years
@@sebastiantorres1358 unfortunately. I’d hate for it not be accessible for young new enthusiasts 20 years from now, especially when that’s the point of it.
straight facts
@@sebastiantorres1358 I highly doubt it as I imagine within that timeframe we'll know exactly how much time the ICE will have left on our roads. The vast majority of people will applaud such news or won't give a crap either way. The few car enthusiasts left at that point won't likely want to shell out much money for ICE-based vehicles once they know that they'll be banned, or that they'll no longer be able to buy gasoline (or both) in the near future. Drive 'em & enjoy 'em while you still can, that's what such cars are built for anyway.
Man I'm liking this car more and more, it really does sound pretty nice. I want to give it a try. Also yes mat, as a tall guy myself banging my knees in cars happens all the time. I wish they'd stop putting controls and pointy, hard surfaces near the side of the legs.
Unfortunately that sound is very fake, coming from the speakers. Matt criticized it when he first drove it but when his lady friend said "it sounds nice" he just went along with it lol
@@weasle2904 Yeah I understand that, I'm not a fan of the speakers myself. It did seem like the Toyota variant was worse.
@@Globbs The GR86 actually seems to the more track focused variant. It's engine is slightly more powerful.
@@weasle2904 both BRZ and GR86 are the same engine

have one of these pre-orded and I can't wait till it comes in! great vid!
Congratulations!
congratulations !!
what color?
Thanks guys !
Congratulations! You’re a smart man
I went from never wanting the old model to really wanting this new one. It's finally a proper sports car.
I really like the look of the new BRZ, the front end looks almost Viper-esque
On point with the HP personally the good spot is 220-300 HP with just right amount of weight 2800-3300 pounds enough fun to push the car 10/10 without the speeding ticket.
Always more fun to go fast in a slow car than slow in a fast one. Finding the sweet spot in the middle? PRICELESS!
You are going to love the HKS Supercharger kit for this car. Pushes HP to 320ish.
Exactly
Oh wow. I see where Subaru got the tail lamps for the new WRX. BRZ sounds good from in the cabin and wow, it looks like Matt was bombing through the canyons in that thing. I love a good four cylinder power plant. IMO, 220+hp is plenty for a car like the BRZ. Great tires for the owner's local road conditions, and as Matt mentioned, brake hardware improvement, will make that car amazing.
One of my favourite SmokingTire videos - manual, lightweight, beautiful driving and fabulous roads. Also I love the interior of that motor.
Awesome, now I need to know how to drive standard before I get one.
16:42 "this thing rips" is probably one of the best compliments you can give a $30k car
The hair G-meter shows how quick Mat is going. Otherwise the camera is disguising it a bit.
I really enjoyed when you reviewed the Crawford version of the last BRZ, I can't wait to see you review their take on this model.
Matt Love your vids brother. You forgot one thing about not turbo charging these vehicles.. It would add cost $$. Not only that neither Subaru or Toyota wants to compete with themselves and market a lower cost competitor to the supra or WRX. I had an STI in '06 it was a fun car.. I would totally go for a NA car like this for the pure driving fun !
In this episode, we learn that Kristen is smaller than Matt :surprise-pikachu:
Makes 209hp at the wheels, +47 over the old one. Sportscar focus. Rear drive. At least 250 lbs lighter than a new Civic Si and for probably only a grand more. Yes please!
The weight for the new Si is 2950lbs, so it's only 135lbs more than the BRZ. That is a huge power jump over the previous gen though.
@@seanehly-yu4384 Savagegeese found weighed the regular Civic sedan and got 3048 I believe. Generally the Si weighs more from larger brakes etc. Nice if you are right though.
@@bearclaw5115 I was just using the numbers Honda released which could be optimistic. I think SG tested the Sport Touring model with the CVT, so it may have extra weight from the leather interior and such.
@@seanehly-yu4384 Good point.
Fully agree with Matt that it needs knee pads. I banged my knees constantly on the pre refresh first gen BRZ. Sad they didn't make a comeback with this new gen.
I drove one of these this weekend back to back with my 2013 BRZ. It was nice, there's noticeably more torque down low. The interior is nicer. The car felt a little softer than mine in a way that wasn't particularly appealing to me. My car feels a bit more raw/connected. I was seriously thinking about upgrading, but I found I preferred my car. My car with a supercharger would be better than the new car in every way except interior and reliability.
Seems like an absolute steal at this price point too!
Thanks for the banter as well, wouldn't mind more guest appearances in One Takes :)
Loosing even more weight was a great idea she mentioned. Two piece brake disks, lighter forged wheels, a carbon hood and trunk would only add to the driving refinement without adding NVR.
Wheels are probably easiest way to save some weight. If these are Anything like the gen one wheels you can shave off 5-8 pounds per corner unsprung.
Factory hood and trunk are already aluminum. You'd probably be better off getting a lightweight battery. Way cheaper and saves more weight than carbon hood+trunk combined.
Please be nice, the weight thing is a sensitive issue
@@ChoPi-Eww 😆😂🤣
@@MyGoToUserName on my Mustang, I saved 15 lbs per side with two piece front brake disks. On my Evo IX I saved 11 lbs by swapping the aluminum hood for a carbon one. But that hood had a heavy heat extraction duct.
Aluminum or carbon drive shaft, battery, and wheels are probably the best options for real weight savings without just pulling out the interior.
Matt is the Best Damn Car Guru Review Man on the interwebs.
I bought my Suzuki after watching his DRIVE Episode years ago,
So satisfied with that purchase cant stipulate that more,
Cute Car Gal, she should not be afraid to drive on cam, everybody's got to do things to challenge themselves.
It's exciting, makes your heart beat, makes you feel accomplished after, makes you feel alive.
I like the GR86 front end better, but they have different sway bar mounting points and setups. It would be hard to choose one without driving them both.
Of course parts can be changed, and even with the inflation I expect the Subaru to be lower in price.
I hope many people buy these cars. A lightweight RWD naturally aspirated engine car with a manual transmission won’t be available for much longer.
Good vid. Hearing engine and no stupid music
Just ordered mine. Cant wait 😁
Supercharge it and shut up already. Less heat management, more power. With the HKS on my Gen 1 with more power, little disappointed in only 28 more horsepower in the 2nd gen.
I do like a lower COG considering it's best in class already. Also like those cams. 4k and under, grocery duty. 4k and up, oh baby.
As a first gen owner, can't wait to get my hands on one of these.
Kristen & Matt, that was fantastic thank you all the way from down under .
I love this thing, I can't wait to drive one. Great review.
Wait! Why didn't she drive on camera? I would be fascinated to hear her take!
Because driving on camera makes her uncomfortable, they said it in the same part of the video.
Maybe she will write an article for it
1. I am not a tall or heavy person, but I do have thick soccer player thighs. Losing the knee pads will suck.
2. The tiny steering wheel is great.
3. Did they fix the completely undamped wheel wells? It was *awful* on a dirty road.
4. Did they fix how susceptible it is to crosswinds?
5. Did they keep the Toyota Cruise Control stalk? It's the best implementation in the industry.
6. Kristin is partially right on the engine: Subaru boxer engine with Toyota D4S dual (port and direct) injection technology from the Lexus line-up.
What's really insulting is how the LAST gen has real induction noise with the pipe, and this has the synthesized garbage.
how does it compare to a s2000 ?
nice review big difference between fro suspension front is aluminum
What's the correct @thesmokingtire spec? GR86 Base/Premium or BRZ Premium/Limited? What would you buy with your own money?
BRZ Limited master race
Matt, do you prefer the Primacy tires or the PS4 tires on this car? Love the video!
At the Track he said the base was where it's at and enjoyed sliding on them.
@@bearclaw5115 He did. I wish he would have answered this again while driving this one though
I bought a memery foam back rest for my car for $12 at TJMAXX and if your doesn't have lumbar support I highly reccomend.
Naturally aspirated is the way to go. I don't want any turbos and their lag.
Yeah Toyota can build sports cars - the GR Yaris WRC homologation car - but I am sorry for you guys that it isn't in the U.S.

The intelligent and useful dialogue is much appreciated. Thanks, Matt and Kristen!
So excited for the GR86 - all the reservations I had about the first gen car are now gone. GR86 and 2022 Tundra in the driveway - I like that combo!

Hola to Kirsten!
Cheers Matt and Kristen, enjoyed the video. Knew it went pretty well, surprised how nice it sounds.
Let's say I'm in the market for a car which has to be my only one and I really want something modern and track it alot(sadly I'm not). Do I buy this or an used M140i? Both fit a set of track tyres (at least the old GT86 could). This is maximum handling and has the better "concept" to be driven hard, while the BMW has a beast of an engine. Throw a tune on it and you can have 450++ no problem and is still relatively light. When you want to tune the BRZ you have to stick to chassis and a small power amount, or you have to make huge changes which destroys your reliabillity. With the BMW power is not an issue (even though you should not do a lot to the engine to makle it last on track work) and thanks to the M2 there are huge amounts of chassis parts available. A common upgradepath is basicly a M2 front axle to improove handling. Also the BMW is a bit more useable. I'm intrigued to see your answers on this. Since I'm in germany I would go for the M140i, I guess. The aftermarket and community on these is really strong here.
m240i. B58 is absolutely mental, fantastic engine.
the BMW would be significantly faster, but also significantly more expensive both to buy and to maintain. This would be slower of course, but more engaging and direct. BMW, especially non-M models, puts a lot of money and weight into isolating the driver, which takes away some of the fun. The M2 is better than the lesser models, but they're double the price of the BRZ.
M140i + 5k in mods. You won’t loose much money in comparison to what you‘re getting. With GR86 you need to wait 2-3 years in order for it to get released and to avoid new car depreciation.
Does m140i come with a lsd and manual?
I'm also assuming the inputs like steering are going to feel more numb on the M140i
The luxury and more powerful motor are going to be the main advantages. It really just depends on what your priorities are for your next car.
@@farhan007 Manual yes. LSD is available via M-Performance parts. Would go to the aftermarket, I guess.
I’m gunna have to buy one now!
What are those watches? More information please.
Just ordered one, I don't want to track my touring more than 5 times a year. The BRZ will be for 20+ days plus trying to get my licensing
I want the manual version but don’t want to give up the Eyesight system and have heard negative stuff about the weak synchros on the manual transmissions. My Subaru Forester Wilderness has Eyesight system and I really like it. Also does this car not have a spare tire?
The car has a good balanced character which makes it likable.
I had a first gen frs and the knee pads are definitely needed
CG Lock device for seat belt will help hold you in place better and require less bracing with knees, feet, etc
Its not just a you thing! My knees are bruised af after a day of holding my 6'2 220 lb self in slippery leather seat through twisties in my S550 Mustang, I could easily see that happening in other vehicles.
There’s only four cars under $40k I would consider now: accord 2.0T, mustang GT, Subaru brz/86, nissan Z
Toyota and Subaru are linked by Toyota's part ownership of Subaru; Makes WAY more sense than the development of the Supra with BMW.
You nailed it. Every word well placed.
having someone totally different than you in gender, weight and opinion deffinitely broadens your viewers
I have the exact same model and colour on order. Arrives early next year.
Knee pads were one of the first mods I did in my 1st gen BRZ
The video quality is so good at 4K now, thanks for upgrading those GoPros
I see a GR86/BRZ video, I like. Very much in love. GR Corolla or an unlikely modern XRS Apex Corolla would take it's place in my heart.
Matt was really ripping the car, looks like a scene out of Forza Horizon. Brilliant video as always.
We got the GR86 circuit pack in Spain, it came with AP Racing 6 piston brakes, sport cup tyres and Braid forged wheels. In no other country that option was available. And I think it won't be. Selling only 500 of them here, I don't think there will be even 100 in the world with the pack. We have been kind of blessed by Toyota😂
I want to put in an order now. Thanks for another awesome video!!
I get bruises on my left knee EVEN with the knee pads on my '17 when I autocross on 200TW tires.
