    I have about 22 acres of which about 5 acres are much more managed. Most of that 5 is an old pecan orchard. I really love the idea of putting out sulcatas in my pecan orchard with the chickens, geese, and guineas. The only concern that I have is over wintering. In the winter we have temps down into the teens. Occasionally we will have freezing temps for a few days straight. I think with some creativity I could pull it off but I would have to have some serious infrastructure in place first.

    Thank you for a very informative video. I was owned by a Sulcata and then two Russians. Sulcata won, hands down. Best little guy you could ever know. I'm even writing a children's book about him in order to educate young people about their importance in Nature. If anyone is interested in little Camelot's story please let me know so I can share. Again, thank you.

    Russian tortoise I have are the very best for outside enclosures for harsh hot over 100F, cold, below -5 F and dry climates like I have in in Eastern Oregon. This subject is very interesting to me and others with a desire to know more, when making very long term decisions...which should be based on knowledge and not emotion.

    Manouria Emys is endemic in my country but sadly it is now protected so it's illegal to keep one. There is no captive breed of it as well. Right now i keep Sulcata and he's doing great!

    Good job on video :) thank you.
    I do have a question. Iv been wanting to get a salcata tortoise. What do you think? I live in Phoenix AZ . Now I have a cement block wall 4" all around my front yard. My whole yard is a microclimate style. There's plenty of shade, and spots for some sun. Obviously depending upon the time of day. I realize we can get super hot for a few months. What are your thoughts there? My yard isn't huge. But it was a pretty good unused area of desert scape that I felt was a total waste.
    Any thoughts from you would be welcome. Also I would definitely make a nice warm area for it in our winter.which rarely gets below 40°.
    Thank you in advance :)

      Provide a grazing area with some Bermuda grass, a shaded area for midday heat, and watch the tortoise and make sure it doesn’t dig under the block wall

    My concern is the ridiculous number of sulcata hatchlings entering the pet trade every year. There’s no way there are enough lifelong caretakers for all of them. My wife and I are planning to start a rescue.

    • @GregsTurtleHaven
      @GregsTurtleHaven  4 роки тому +1

      Agreed! It’s hard to fathom the sheer numbers of hatchlings out there, and how many impulse buys. I don’t think it’s possible to coordinate the breeders to “scale back”, but the least we can do is help create better awareness and hopefully curb those purchases or steer folks in a better direction

    • @GregsTurtleHaven
      @GregsTurtleHaven  4 роки тому +1

      Gregs Turtle Haven Yeah, we figure in about 5ish years there will be a lot of big torts needing a place. We’ve got 5 acres of yard ready to rumble.

    I live in east texas and I found my sulcata walking in the woods so I assume someone let her go or she got away, I keep her in an igloo dog house with a heat lamp during the winter and during the summer I just take the lamp out, and I've never had an issue with her borrowing,

    I live in Kentucky and have about 3 acres of land. Would a sulcata or mountain tortoise be manageable? Would the mountain tortoise be the better pick for my environment?

    • @GregsTurtleHaven
      @GregsTurtleHaven  4 роки тому

      Probably mountain tortoise; more cold tolerant, smaller and easier to move, and overall a smarter species. You’ll still need to bring it in during winter

    I don’t know if u will see this or not but what is the best turtle to have for indoors only I don’t have much space and I don’t trust the yard bc theirs dogs around and I want one that’s easy to maintain and hopefully indoors only and I love north so it’s cold a lot but the summer can be super hot I live in pa near the mountains so any suggestions would be great and I’m a first time trying to own a turtle

    • @GregsTurtleHaven
      @GregsTurtleHaven  4 роки тому +1

      I don’t keep Asian leaf turtles. My best advice is a 50/50 land and water habitat, with plenty of leaves in both land and water
