Picked up the 2017 500X several weeks back for the screen, skid plate for occasional gravel use and have been chuckling ever since. I'm 6' but with an extra long torso and 34" inseam so the standard upright position seems to fit me and feel very all day good. Pegs are quite a bit further back than my 2002 CB750 Nighthawk and are quickly becoming my long-term ride preference for comfort...and yes, Peppy is a good label for that Honda 500 parallel twin. Perfect for why I acquired it. Thanks for sharing the experience EBD
I own the '19 R and I have to say, this generation of CB500 is the best so far. The only negative with this bike (depending on your preference) just like the previous generations, the 1st gear is too short. I changed the front sprocket to 16 teeth and the gear shortness is fixed to a degree but I prefer taller gearing. Hey at least it fixed the speedo error and 1st gear.
Does it chudder with the taller gearing at low speeds? I've done taller gearing before and didn't enjoy the way my single cylinder responded at low speeds.
My CBR500R didn't really 'feel' light until I got better rubber on it. Could be because the previous owner barely rode it and it had the original, 5+ year old, rubber on it. Or it could be because D222's just aren't very good. Not sure which, or if it was a combination thereof. Either way, a new set of Pilot Road 5's had it almost reminding me of my Ninja 300's handling. Very light and nimble feeling indeed.
@@luismagana1742 i've had the 2018 for 3 years now and it's a dream. Sometimes the bike slips tp neutral when i upshift to 2. but i think it's because im too soft with the shifter. other than that it's a beautiful bike with a really nice sound even stock
For any riders around my size (5'4") I recommend keeping an eye on the used market for this bike, or something very similar like a Yamaha MT-07 or even a Suzuki GSF600 (bandit) if you're desperate for more speed, or a Ninja 650R (ER-6F) these bikes aren't too sporty but give a decently comfy ride. Avoid the V-Strom. I know they can surpass 200k miles easy but they're heavy. Too heavy.
Great review and thanks for helping me make up my mind between the F and the X! I think the F is the one for me going to look at a bike tomorrow at my local dealer - can't wait :)
Bought the 500R today. Needed something comfortable when I don't feel like being hunched over and miserable on my 2020 ZX6R. Was hoping for a little more power but I really like it. I feel like the Ninja 400 I had pulled noticeably harder (was hoping for at least the same). But I got the 500R for it's weight and stability for the highway. I don't regret the purchase...beautiful bike.

For those who just like me love to do their own bike maintnance, this models should have an easier access to air filter and valves which are a pita to access and a nightmarento adjust if necessary. Besides that, amazing reliable, nimble, confortable bikes.
Let me put things in perspective. I had one of the now old CB500 1997 model, if memory serve. All in all "identical" to this one, only with carbs instead of injection. With 58 awesome HP, 18 liter tank, drum brake on the rear and even more storage under the seat. Mine was still "made in Japan" model. Later the Brazilian versions seem to have a more dubious reputation! All this to say that in 4 years of ownership. 95.000km where done in an impeccable and reliable way. I've never touched the valves! Worked flawlessly anyway! ;-) One chain kit!! one battery, 4 sets of spark plugs, air filters, oil and filter changes, front brake pads, never touched the rear drum brake! 1 set of wheel bearings (front and back) and a lot of tyres. Really not much to tell, it simply worked everyday all day. All maintenance was done by me. This bike always "slept" on the street, rain or shine. It was never a garage baby! I believe this sum up quite well why this mid range Honda's are amazing bikes! ;-)
Santino Shariffe tbh this one has not a great resell value, at least here in belgium. A used CB500F with 1000 km on the clock, is like 1000€ discount from brand new. And if you go for an older model its really easy to pick up one for under 4K
I always wanted this size of bike but after passing A licence last year got persuaded to go bigger and picked up an FZ6 fazer. In many ways I think I missed out because I enjoyed the basic nature of the 125 and just wanted something a bit more powerfulaa
I got exactly the same as my first bike. The FZ6 naked version though, and i'm now even looking at a slower bike for everyday use, something a2 friendly just for commuting etc.
EnglishBikerDan you mentioned Honda only has 3 variations with this engine where there is 5. The CB500F and R500R have the same engine and chassis for example.

Cheers mate. 👍👍👍👍😂😂
i did my c.b.t on one of these (my first time on a big bike) i am now going to ditch the 125's and get the big boy license as that 500f was so cool and easy to ride not as scary as i was scarfed by the 2 stroke off roader as a kid lol safe riding boys and girls
I had a 2022 500f and traded it in for a 1000. Not a day goes buy I don’t think about it. Now I’m going to have to buy another one but this time it will stay forever. Handeling wise that little bike can be pushed quit hard. And bikes around that 50 hp mark are a lot more fun than a bike with 3x that power.
Don't wish your life away bud, plenty of time for fun, concentrate on getting to the money first. I just wish I had someone tell me that when I was a lad, had plenty of fun, now haven't got shit to show 👍
@The Wobbly Motorcyclist I generally get most bikes from the manufacturers directly these days but I do have a few dealers that are willing to work with me. It's a quid pro quo relationship. Some dealers only see it as a waste of time but other dealers have told me that they've sold a few bikes off the back of my videos so are more than happy to loan me a bike for a few hours.
I was meant to be doing my full A license tomorrow but this virus has stopped that. During my Mod 2 training a couple of months ago I used the 2018 model of the 500f and I loved it! Smashing bike and coming off a 125 and jumping straight on it felt like a natural step forward.
To be honest I don’t think it looks great, that headlight turns me off...it doesn’t seem to fit with the bike. And I love the sound of the CB650R , this 2-cilinder sounds like a little thumper... not my thing tbh but hey. All and all a great review, Dan. Nice to see you riding in these harsh times 👍
Good review. The 2020 model is better-looking than earlier models. The dash is particularly attractive. The engine is more flexible than the old models, too.
I love more the cb300f !! Obviously it’s not faster than the cb500f, but I find it more manageable to ride, and nimble. Still,it’s a HONDA , and they make great bikes. Ride safely my friend ! 👍👍👍🇨🇦 The only problem I had riding the 500 is that it’s not really comfortable when riding more than 1 hr . My butt hurts 😢
I still cannot comprehend why Honda doesn’t make this cb500f in the same retro looks as they did with the 650f. Twin cylinder , less than 200kg wet and retro looks will make this bike an absolute winner.
I'd love to know if the CBR500R fairing makes much of a difference vs the CB500F with a windscreen. I think the CB500F could be more the look and seating position I am into.
I ride a 250cc suzuki with close to 30hp and 22nm, its not much but riding around town and around the narrow/winding country roads its got plenty to offer..a lot of fun..but yeah, it does feel slow at times..
9:14 for the kind of riding- here's the problem. Look for "schaaf". And what he does with his old cb500. He has ikon shocks and different springs too. Being a reasonable beginner(by law or otherwise) powerwise is one thing and might help not only not dying but also learning, riding smooth(dang i should have just janked out the 35hp shackles i wore after 6-12months. 2damn years), but it sucks when a bike in the end feels sketchy through tight fast corners. For alot of money. Sporty but lower power (ktm 690) is kinda rare and top notch everything else is very rare. Even cheap stuff geared towards sporty is rare. The value for money ratio, unless you really put in km and know you ll stay slow is low compared to used. I find it pretty important intel to do the brutal kinda riding especially on these bikes.
I can't post my brutal riding but the 500 can do it, mostly no problems. Kneedowns aplenty. When you push it hard the front end wallows a bit, no surprise though. It's not a Supersport bike but marketed as an every day commuter. Schaaf is a good rider but pushes it far too much on the road I feel. He very nearly paid the ultimate price too. End of the day this bike is awesome for the sort of riding most will do on it. I'd buy one tbh and embarrass some weekend warriors in the corners. 😁
I learned on a cb500f. Bought the cb500x, because of the looks. Highways even with mild strong winds were a battle. It classifies as touring bike but cant really compar with my suzuki VStrom DL. But if I went touring I always outlasted my friends with nakeds, in terms of breaks from riding. Still miss my cb500x sometimes. And fuel ecomeny is really good. Way worse than my vstrom 😅
I'd like to at least have a rebel 500...havent had a motorcycle in a couple years and I used to have a 1982 honda silver wing and that was a 500. So I think I'll just stick to something between the 500 to 750 range
you forgot my Honda Rebel 500 cc 2020. it has the same engine too. and is one of the most beautiful bikes in the market once you customize it. i really love the engine.very powerfull and fun. no need more than 47 hp , what for? i can do 100km/h in 5 seconds and maintain 130km/h cruiser with no issues. 500cc is enough for everything.
I didn't forget, it's just not part of the Honda 500 lineup is all so it'll be getting it's own video. I've had the 2020 Rebel for about 3 weeks from Honda so far. Video review soon on that.
Mostly true, but.... taking Hwy 94 into Chicago and getting sluggish at 85mph does get a little strenuous. I dig the challenge myself, but others...may want more grunt up top

@@ayookusanya5437 Not really, because I hardly ever got to use all the power unless I was out in the country side away from traffic. On a faster bike, every car just felt like an obstacle slowing me down, and that's a dangerous way of thinking, always feeling like I have to pass everyone because I can go faster. However, there's still a lot of fun to be had on the CB500F especially in 2nd and 3rd. More importantly, it is a nice handling bike, very manoeuvrable especially at low speed. But definitely adjust the freeplay ua-cam.com/video/XcLU_Y22oko/v-deo.html
Do you always start off on 2nd gear on a flat surface?
Glad you've finally ridden this, got the same bike in black. What I love about this budget bike is the quality of the workmanship, Honda does care about their product. Mine is about year old and I'm still over the moon every time I ride it. 👍👍
Glad you love your 500. They're great!
Growing up in the 70s,the motorcycle world was filled with smaller capacity bikes, that’s why I’m getting back on a bike and it’ll be something like this
Love watching you ride, beautiful countryside.
I have the Honda cb125f as my first bike, your review of the cb500f makes it seem like they're super similar in the all the good ways, might be a perfect upgrade for me
*150R joins the chat
I guarantee you jumping into 500F from your Cb125f will definitely put a big smile on your face as the power difference is quite substantial. The 500f can seat at 90mph all day long no problem, not to mention the torque is where this bike excels to be honest, it will tackle hills like nothing. 👍😁
Great review! I got the black 2020 cb500f as my very first bike just yesterday, and i absolutely love how it looks and sounds. 👍
Update on how it's been? Thinking about getting one for me
@@ComeAtMeBro2131 Bike is going great and i have no issue's with it. Honda's are well known for being a reliable bike, but i have only owned it for about 5 months now, so i hope it keeps going well in future.
@@damienwhitfield2423still loving it?
@@method341 I kinda grew out of it because i now want a faster bike 😅. Still it has been a very good bike overall 😊.
@@damienwhitfield2423 the good thing is, it's not that expensive + has decent resell value I guess. And good to learn on. I am thinking of buying it as my first bike!
ahhhh just bought a 2021 and I'm so excited to pick it up this week!!
What colour did you get?
@@jeremycubs8331 got the "Darkness Black Metallic" it's the only option for the 2021
@@ianboeltsstill ok? Do you like it?
_This bike in the orange colour option looks lovely_ 👌
I just bought one second hand last week, it's 2013 cb500f red colour same as yours and I love it
The F stands for Friggin awesome.
Or Fffffffunnnn! 😎
Enjoy your bikes Andrew and thanks for watching!
I agree. Even in stop & go traffic in the thick of Boston I'm in 2nd gear just rounding city blocks.
Does it chudder with the taller gearing at low speeds? I've done taller gearing before and didn't enjoy the way my single cylinder responded at low speeds.
Now that was a great review. I have the X but was interested in your take on this.
I've owned a 500X too previously. Awesome bikes.
Considering for my first bike - nice to hear you describe it as a big bike feel with small bike handling 🇺🇸
I got this one in april as my first big bike and I love it ;)
Ah man lucky you! How's she's been treating you? I'm looking into this or the R sportsbike version, such a hard choice.
@@luismagana1742 i've had the 2018 for 3 years now and it's a dream. Sometimes the bike slips tp neutral when i upshift to 2. but i think it's because im too soft with the shifter. other than that it's a beautiful bike with a really nice sound even stock
Daniel Hey Daniel, and how does it handle? Do you think it’s a commuting only bike, or is it good when you want to get a little bit aggressive on it?
@@andregoncalves9236 I love getting aggressive on it. Has its limits, but if u find them youre getting better :)
Too heavy.
Can you flat foot this bike?
4:32 i see u looking xD
Ha I didn't notice that before he even paused 😂😂

Great review. Would love if you'd consider doing a SV650 review at some point
Jens Christoffersen yes please !
Because there aren't enough of those around.
@@MassFireworks I'd like Dan’s take on the SV, obviously. It should be quite clear in my original comment.
Got this 2019 version myself and i love it! spot on review
It's tempting me, 2nd bike perhaps! :)
Me too! Got it as my first bike in October and man I love the thing
Nice review. These bikes are often found in the Motorcycle Driving Schools in France (ECF). Currently passing my driver's license on one of these.
Yeah, here in montreal they also use the cb500f
Great review and thanks for helping me make up my mind between the F and the X! I think the F is the one for me going to look at a bike tomorrow at my local dealer - can't wait :)
48 hp is about what my 1971 Triumph Bonneville had and it topped out around 110mph. So the little 500s got spunk.
i guess it weights less, and more precice fueling
I weigh a slim 150 lb, I cant get my speedo on the 500f over 107. yet. But 110 seems a reach atm
@@WL2K I forgot to say that when I had a passenger the 1971 Bonneville would still do 110 mph.
@@michaeljoesmith3977 yeah no contest lol. Not enough bike for 2 up @ 110 fo sho lol. Big diff.
Good choice. That 400 Ninja is always screaming its guts out at any speed.
The 2022 version of the CB500F has been upgraded with major revisions. Check it out.
Yep, BPF and dual radial calipers and discs. Should be a nice upgrade!
Great review Dan! Really enjoyed it! Thanks
Hot damn did the video quality just improve a lot? :O I've already watched you in 1440p but something changed in this one... I got my CB650R 1 month ago though, your videos helped a lot to decide what to get :D Thanks for your work and vids Dan, love em! :D
Shouldn't have, all my recent stuff is recorded at 2.7k at 60fps. Only difference with this one is the angle wasn't on SuperWide, just Wide.
@@Englishbikerdan Ohhh niet! Yea i checked back on the previous video and it wasn't at 60FPS for me, but this was and look buttery smooth. Nevertheless great vid! :) Wide roads m8! :)
Worked flawlessly anyway! ;-)
One chain kit!! one battery, 4 sets of spark plugs, air filters, oil and filter changes, front brake pads, never touched the rear drum brake! 1 set of wheel bearings (front and back) and a lot of tyres. Really not much to tell, it simply worked everyday all day. All maintenance was done by me.
This bike always "slept" on the street, rain or shine. It was never a garage baby! I believe this sum up quite well why this mid range Honda's are amazing bikes! ;-)
Honda makes bikes that last...quality, longevity and great resell value.
Santino Shariffe tbh this one has not a great resell value, at least here in belgium. A used CB500F with 1000 km on the clock, is like 1000€ discount from brand new. And if you go for an older model its really easy to pick up one for under 4K
@@antoineallard8788 but that's true for basically any bike, just the fact that it's used and has 1k miles means 1k€ less.
@@antoineallard8788 New always depreciates a lot, always buy used/nearly new if you want to save some cash.
I never buy used because there are a lot of losers out there with no idea.
Good review, just a shame your phone blocks us seeing the speedometer.
For wind protection you forgot to mention the CBR500R! Same bike, fully faired with lower clip on bars....
I'm not comparing this against other 500's. Just a review of this bike as it stands. I'll review the CBR500R at some point though.
EnglishBikerDan you mentioned Honda only has 3 variations with this engine where there is 5. The CB500F and R500R have the same engine and chassis for example.
I've never riden a bike with clip-on bars. Are they less comfortable than flat bars?
The angle looks slightly awkward on the wrists.
Hi mate, I'm borrowing one from Honda at the moment, as my fireblade is having some work done, and I've been out this morning for a run up the twisties on it and what a brilliant bike lots of fun and I can see there appeal, obviously a massive, massive difference from my blade, but honestly It a great, bike lots of fun, and I smoked a couple of sports bikes on the way home, I know childish and I'm not john mcguinness but though that know, know. Cheers mate. 👍👍👍👍😂😂
Excellent review thank you. I pick my new one up next week.
Very sensible bike. Proud of you. You will NOT need an upgrade.
@@myrtlelittle4130 Thank you. I like 500s. Been all over Europe on different ones over many years. This one is a diamond. Ride safe.
Got the 2017 model. Only thing I wish I had from the 2019 was the stock gear indicator and the mirror. The previous model are hideous.
i did my c.b.t on one of these (my first time on a big bike) i am now going to ditch the 125's and get the big boy license as that 500f was so cool and easy to ride not as scary as i was scarfed by the 2 stroke off roader as a kid lol safe riding boys and girls
Good review. I almost bought one. ended up xsr700 instead
You made no mistake with the CP2
Shouldn't that bike be compared with the CB650 R?
Regardless, make sure it does not suffer from the same fork issues as the MT-07
New forks for 2018-2020 models still no adjustment but if u stay under 100mph while riding wheelies its fine🤣🤙💯
My one and only bike review vid I done was this bike, in red too, great fun little bike though.
Ugh I wish I was out of uni and at a job so I can afford one of these awesome little bikes.
Wish I wasn't working at uni right now so I can go ride! 😔
You'll get there one day man. Just keep at it!
This was actually September last year but I did go out today for a spin! 👍
Was dead set on the 500F right up until i saw its brother - CBR500R (in red) which looks sooooo good. Had to buy that one instead :)
Nice! Enjoy your CBR500R! 😎

I wonder is it possible to swap the headlight with cb300r or cb650r
I guess it's possible but I imagine it would be a bit of a faff. Thanks for watching!

Hi ! Thanks for this video.
Are you able to compare this bike with the CB650R-A2 ?
Yes
And also the z400 vs 650 a2
There’s also the rebel 500 with the same 471, just tuned a bit different.
Yep, everyone keeps mentioning it now. It's not one of the three 500's which is why I left it out. Rebel review soon, hopefully....
People always leave out the rebel when talking about this engine. Weird.
Good review. The 2020 model is better-looking than earlier models. The dash is particularly attractive. The engine is more flexible than the old models, too.
so is the 2020 engine diff from my 2017 in some way? slipper clutch and abs notwithstanding
the bike is so good I want to get one
I love more the cb300f !! Obviously it’s not faster than the cb500f, but I find it more manageable to ride, and nimble. Still,it’s a HONDA , and they make great bikes. Ride safely my friend ! 👍👍👍🇨🇦 The only problem I had riding the 500 is that it’s not really comfortable when riding more than 1 hr . My butt hurts 😢
Would this bike be ok touring with a windscreen? Say doing 68mph or so? Wonderful review.
Yeah I don't see why not. Thank you!
I still cannot comprehend why Honda doesn’t make this cb500f in the same retro looks as they did with the 650f. Twin cylinder , less than 200kg wet and retro looks will make this bike an absolute winner.
A CB500R neosport cafe is a pretty safe bet for later this year/next year. Like you say, it would be a winner!
Nice showing. Do the turn signals stay on solid as marker lights when not blinking? Front and rear?
Great video, in your opinion does it hold its own on the motorway at national speed limit?
I commute 30 miles on motorway one way...keeps up with UK motorway speeds no problem
Yeah no problems, even two up. 👍
Same engine as in the Rebel 500 too
No it's slightly different, the Rebel 500 makes less bhp but slightly more torque and slightly lower down.
I'd love to know if the CBR500R fairing makes much of a difference vs the CB500F with a windscreen. I think the CB500F could be more the look and seating position I am into.
The wind blast is a little less on the faired 500R. Still, neither was too bad.
@@Englishbikerdan awesome. Thanks for the reply. Seriously eying one of these up for my next bike. Love a good Honda.
Mate, is there a continuation to the touring in Germany video?
There most certainly is but I'm not rushing the edit. So, I'm hoping part 2 next week but we'll see!
Lovely bike.
Still trying to decide between the CB500X, CB500F and KTM Duke 390.
All are good. 390 is the most fun on a sunny day but the Honda's are still excellent bikes. Very dependable.
The rebel 500 shares the same engine just tuned down so really 4 bikes share the same engine
Yeah, I meant that there's 3 bikes in the 500 range with the engine but I explained it poorly. Can't wait to try the 2020 Rebel though! 👍
I'd like to at least have a rebel 500...havent had a motorcycle in a couple years and I used to have a 1982 honda silver wing and that was a 500. So I think I'll just stick to something between the 500 to 750 range
First time i rode it i did a breaking test and i was surprised how idiot-proof the abs is
I want to ask you something is the honda cb500f 2020 in A2 category, althow that was a nice review!!
you forgot my Honda Rebel 500 cc 2020. it has the same engine too. and is one of the most beautiful bikes in the market once you customize it. i really love the engine.very powerfull and fun. no need more than 47 hp , what for? i can do 100km/h in 5 seconds and maintain 130km/h cruiser with no issues.
How would you compare the riding position between this bike and the cb650r? I know the 650r is a little more aggressive, but just wondering how it compares. Thanks!
It's pretty similar but I'd say the 500 is slightly more comfortable.
aaaah. i can hear that it was a slightly cool day lovely
wow pilot road 5 as stock tires
wow. My 2017 came with the Dunlop Sportmax D222. So Jealous but i think im doing Bridgestone T30 Evos next
Just subscribed loving the reviews. Really good job. Out of curiosity what would you prefer the Cb500f or the z650. Am doing my test soon and my friend was planning on selling me their z650 or I get a new Cb500f. Decisions decisions decisions lol 😂
I'd go for the Honda personally but that's me. Both good bikes tbh. Thanks for the sub, it's appreciated. 👍
Thinking of upgrading my Yamaha mt03 for this bike, do you think it’s worth the upgrade?
I have the 19 plate too in matte black, love it, got a akrapovic can on it but has a welded baffle ;(
Great bike review like it 👍
They should do the same as the Rebel and make it with the 1100 twin engine in it too.
That would more than double the price and make it a heavy lump too.
How would you compare this bike to the sv650 you recently bought?
Can you talk a bit about the clutch? Is it a quick shifter or a slipper clutch???
30+ years of riding I had the CBR500R version but went for the CB650 , I miss the little 500 was a cracking bike , enough for the road really
Great review
