Hi Marc, I’ve owned a red CB500f for a couple of years and toured extensively using throw over panniers, top box and tank bag. None of these affect the superb handling. At 80 years old this fabulous bike will see me out!!!! Thanks for this review with which I totally agree. JB.
I went from a 50cc 2-stroke to a 1200 Kawasaki. After rolling off the dealership, carefully giving it some throttle .. first time this kind of acceleration is like smoking 10 pipes of meth at once: totally addicting. Will never forget that afternoon.
I had litre+ bikes, tourers cruisers etc for last 20yrs. I'm getting older and just got fed up having to think about the mass, width, weight of these big bikes, lean angle of the cruiser etc, so I traded my Yam xvs1300 full tourer for 2017 CB500F. I looked at what I actually needed - I won't be touring europe again, my wife doesn't go on the pillion any more, my top speed is about 80 on the Mway (which I spend as little time on as possible) and around between 40-60 on the roads which I use most. I don't camp and don't care about keeping up with the pack etc etc. The CB is comfortable, cheap to run, tax, insure and get spares for - except the headlight, it's a sealed unit and will cost you £400+ to buy. I thought I would have needed a small wind screen for it, especially after the huge screen of the cruiser, but at my height - 5'8" - the wind pressure/flow is not serious at all even at 70/80. I can get both feet flat on the ground. I'm 63 and can go an hour and a half to two hours before needing a break from the seat, which is perfect timing for coffee breaks. Great proven engine too. This bike has brought back the sheer fun of biking to me and have been all over Scotland with it (weather and Covid permitting). Sure, the 'twist the handle and go' of the big torquey bikes is great, but this bike has enough acceleration to get you first from the lights, pass traffic safely and get you out of potential problems. I can corner properly again without thinking about cruiser footboards touching down or the sheer mass of the bike making corners more trying than they need to be. Absolutely brilliant pared down bike and the perfect fit for my present biking needs - highly recommended for beginner and experienced biker.
Great bikes, I've had mine for about two years now. Very nice around town bike and day trips. I've added a Givi 56 litre top box, bikini fairing and Tom Tom sat nav. Good for going places, parking you can't in a car. I also added a centre stand.
Great review, so rare to see someone who ride in a similar manner to me, using tall gears to save engine and fuel - so many screaming the engine sitting in 2nd gear doing 30 and 4th doing 60, for whatever reason.
Yes exactly many thanks 👍 It's better to use the torque and midrange to ride on the road different maybe if you need to overtake really quickly Many thanks 👍 best wishes mark
I own the 2019 since early this year and i love it and couldn't agree more. It's perfect for short trips, and city riding if you look into those kind of bikes plus it has more enough power to have som fun :)
I owned a CB125R after CBT (UK) and loved it but wanted more power to get up and away from cars behind when I passed my full A licence. I bought a Ninja 650 then and had it for about 6 months but was not confident with the handling at all which surprised me as I'd learned on a Z650. I have just traded it in for a 2020 CB500F and I absolutely love it. I am hugely more confident on it and no longer have that "shall I go out or not?" feeling. I echo everything Mark has said in his review - it's not my first bike but I will probably keep it a lot longer than the other 2...

Great review, thank you. I'm trying to decide between the CB500F & CB500X. I'm only 5'6 (167cm)... so the 500X does feel a little tall (perhaps I could consider a lowering kit, which I could decide to remove once I'm fully familiar/comfortable with the bike?). I can almost flatfoot the CB500F as is... it does seem to be tangibly smaller, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. I like the idea of the CB500X being high up for vision & for street presence as well as for what I think might be superior wind protection on the highway. What do you reckon? I'd like to use which ever bike I end up with to do the odd commute to work (30mins highway) as well as be able to pop up to the shops for some quick groceries or a take-away... so I guess that's where I'm being torn - I perceive the 500X to be better for highway duty but perhaps a bit big & bulky to go get a pint of milk; whereas the reverse for the 500F. Gosh, I've prattled on... I'm sorry... just really keen to hear your as well as anyone else's thoughts. Kind Regards ... and keep up the excellent reviewing work!! ;)
Hi ...I always recommend the cb500f as a first bike for people because of what you said it's smaller than the x model ...I've had the X model myself and it's great but I would recommend the F for yourself at 5 ft 6 because it's better for just popping to the shops on etc ...plus it's a bit sportier in the corners of the mood takes you ...I'm into naked bikes at the moment so the F model would be my choice...either way all the Honda 500 models are amazing reliability and 85 mpg UK economy Best wishes mark
George Krpan I’ve ridden both, the cb500f may not be as stylish in my opinion but it’s night and day performance wise. The 500 is a much more usable bike if you do any highway travel and still gets like 65mpg. And the power off the line is a bit better. Still wish we could get it in the new style though
Hi Bob ...the 650 is more powerful and 4 cylinders ...this is a twin but I actually preferred the 500 ...it's cheaper new ,more economical and I just felt it had a bit more character...and enough power to cruise comfortably Cheers mark
Hi Mark, I am thinking of getting one of these but you mentioned a couple of times that you need to lean a bit forward and your feet were slightly behind you, which has put me off a bit. I prefer the sit up position. I've had the X version, how does the F compare with the CB500X seating position? Is the same or a more forward lean? Thanks in advance if you see this and answer.
Hi mark yes the x is definitely sit up the f is not really that extreme like a sports bike ...it's just a little more Racey than the x model ...I found it to be very comfortable and you could definitely do a couple of hours In the saddle before you needed a rest best regards mark

Hi I have a 2019 CB500F and absolutely love it. I am considering adding the windscreen on your review bike. Did it help with wind buffeting at higher speeds or is more of an aesthetic add-on? Did it aid with the glare on the LCD screen? Thank you!
I put a givi screen on a 2015 cb500f....I would say it doesn't help with wind enough to make up for the way it ruins the naked look...and I do about 60 miles a day on the motorway
My first bike was a cb600 hornet 2008, it was a beautiful bike. I then swapped it for a 2018 KTM duke 390. My dealer near me has one of these, I really am considering going back to Honda with this model in mind. Sooooo tempting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thinking of getting one of these if my 21 month old Street twin gives me anymore grief .Just about to go into dealers for whole new wiring harness with 1200 miles on the clock, proving to be a big issue for Triumph. Good review by the way.
Hi Mark, loved the review and I also like the look of the bike, great colour as well. Pretty quick and easy to ride by the sounds of your review. Excellent video mark, ride safe sir cheers Gary.
HI Mark. Thanks for the review, you obviously really liked the bike. Love the orange and actually I think the screen also looks very good, even tho it's a naked. I'm considering one for commuting (and have also researched Sv650 and Z650) and the occasional long weekend trip, but I'm 6ft 1in. I would defintely fit the screen for motorway work but in your experience of the naked middle-weights, is this potentially the best fit for taller riders...on screen it looks more roomy than the others? I also like the look of the Z650 but it looks too cramped. Also, hard to say perhaps but do you think the small screen made much difference to wind blast? Thanks!
Hi robin size wise ...this and the z650 not alot of difference...yes the screen helped a little ...as you are tall this bike would be ok but you may want to consider the bigger cb500x as it has a higher seat ..cheers mark
I'm six four. When I went looking for a lighter bike my first choice would have been a SV 650 as a longtime Suzuki guy. I didn't fit on it at all. Not even close. I fit wonderfully well on the 500F and can ride it for hours and I'm 68.

I’m new to biking, due to complete my DAS this summer. I’m looking at this as my first bike. I’m 37 so a 125 is a little small and I’m a ‘little’ heavy! Do you think this, the ktm390 duke, z400 or mt03 is better for a newbie?
Hi Luke well all if those bikes are brilliant and any one would be perfect ,size wise the cb 500 is probably the biggest and the best all round due to it's great engine but for fun and coolness definitely the ktm they are apparently extremely good to ride and good value used prices Good luck with your biking Regards mark
I just tried a 500X a few days ago. I found that between 62 and 65 mph there was a bit of vibration. Perhaps, or hopefully, this will dissipate or even disappear once the bike is run in. It was a bit annoying.
Thank you Mark for the great review. I own one in black, after over a year I still love mine. One thing I disagree with you is the weight, you said its very light? Well it isn't lol, it's about 200 kilos, it's even heavier than MT07. But I guess the weight helps with stability and side winds 😁, but the engine is indeed butter smooth, much much refined than the 2020 Z650 I've tested.
Hi im a kawasaki fan...and would get this instead of the z400..just prefered the extra ooomph from the engine and it was smoother and more comfortable ..the z400 seat slopes forward somewhat all the best mark
Hi matko ..you will be big on this bike but ok...you will still be able to ride it ,your legs may be a little cramped ,im 170 cm....also look at the cb500x which is taller for you best regards mark
It's a toss up for me between the versys 300, the z400 and this one. I want a light bike but I also want one which is comfortable. This honda seems a little heavy on paper compared to the other two, but is a Honda and probably a lovely bike. I don't have to worry about budgets thankfully so it really does come down to the bike. I am also mindful of our shit roads so being high up (as with with versys ) and having big wheels deals with the shit roads, but then the honda looks great...decisions decisions..
@@markpulling12 Because that 500x is about 200kg...and that's too heavy if ever I had to pick it up. That said it's a really nice bike and if it weren't for that weight I'd have one. That versys is 25kg lighter on the other hand.
Great value at the price. I’m very short - 5’1” and short arms. I sat on one and it felt good with balls of feet on the ground and comfortable reach to the bars. I prefer the “F” style of Honda over the current “R” style. The current “R” style has a longer reach to the bars. Feel free to suggest other options for the very short rider like myself.
@@markpulling12 I’m a returning rider. I rode for about 12 years then took off about 15 years. My last bike was a Honda Nighthawk 650. I prefer to get nothing less than a 500 cc. We’ll see. If I can afford it, I might get a Street Twin or T100. The Street Twin, especially, fits me well. I just need to put together $10K because I don’t want to finance a motorcycle. But I definitely have the fever.
@@markpulling12 what are the cb500f advantages over the z400 as their hp figures are pretty close despite the z400 being almost 1k more affordable and also considerably lighter
@@hansendy3708 Mainly just more comfortable..z400 seat slopes forward a bit,and more torque from the bigger Honda engine, but yes agreed if you can get a good price on the z40/ it's a cracking machine Best wishes mark
@@markpulling12 Thanks Mark. our z400 is made in Thailand while cb500f is made in Japan. Admittedly I prefer the er more mature styling of the 500 as opposed to the positively juvenile z400 and it has somewhat better fit n finish … and there are very few 500f’s in the streets as most opt for the cb650r or mt07 after the 400cc “stage”.
Mark, that horrible screen destroys the beauty of the bike. If your thing is naked or super naked or retro style naked I say OWN IT. This is just my opinion unless you simply put a mini screen that only covers the dash, meaning it's only an inch higher than the dash. I like naked bikes because they're fun and also naked. If you want screens and things like that get an adventure bike, just my 2 cents. Cheerio.

Cheers mark
I’m new to biking, due to complete my DAS this summer. I’m looking at this as my first bike. I’m 37 so a 125 is a little small and I’m a ‘little’ heavy! Do you think this, the ktm390 duke, z400 or mt03 is better for a newbie?
Hi Luke well all if those bikes are brilliant and any one would be perfect ,size wise the cb 500 is probably the biggest and the best all round due to it's great engine but for fun and coolness definitely the ktm they are apparently extremely good to ride and good value used prices
Good luck with your biking
Regards mark
@@markpulling12 thanks Mark. Really appreciate your feedback. I’ll keep you posted. Going to try an interceptor 650 today and the cb500f.
@@lukewallis8132 the interceptor is great too ! Let me know how you get on
perfect nice little bike ! I could imagine to buy one ! less is more !!!!!!!!!!
Definitely klaus ....I really like these bikes.
Regards mark
@@markpulling12 Hi Mark !! me too !! comfortable to ride !!
I have a 2014 one and it is very similar but I love those one
I just tried a 500X a few days ago. I found that between 62 and 65 mph there was a bit of vibration. Perhaps, or hopefully, this will dissipate or even disappear once the bike is run in. It was a bit annoying.
Thank you Mark for the great review. I own one in black, after over a year I still love mine. One thing I disagree with you is the weight, you said its very light? Well it isn't lol, it's about 200 kilos, it's even heavier than MT07. But I guess the weight helps with stability and side winds 😁, but the engine is indeed butter smooth, much much refined than the 2020 Z650 I've tested.
thanks for the comment jeremy all the best mark
Very nice ! Very nice ! I decide between Honda CB500F and Yamaha MT-03. Which one would you recommend?
Thank you
hi id go for the cb500f....it has more torque and is very economical :) regards mark
This would be great secondary bike to zip around town, nice review bro
Thanks Jack my thoughts too :)
So would you recommend this over the z400 and if so why ?
Hi im a kawasaki fan...and would get this instead of the z400..just prefered the extra ooomph from the engine and it was smoother and more comfortable ..the z400 seat slopes forward somewhat all the best mark
@@markpulling12 brilliant thanks
Is it worth the price difference though? In my country that's more than 2k USD. A bit tough to swallow.
@@lmcteo hmmm yes agreed $2k is quite alot more ...maybe the z400 is better value then :)
Regards mark
@@markpulling12 appreciate your reply. I am still on the fence and it doesn't help that I'm a Honda fanboy, but it's indeed hard to beat Z400's value.
Like that Honda cb500 f smart bike all round cheap on petrol mpg thanks for review
Hi Andrew ...yes it's probably my favorite out of the Honda 500s
Regards mark
When you riding the new CB500x?
Should be in a few weeks
Hi mark i have the first cb500s from the 90's . Its a great bike kicks out more power than this version and is great fun.
Did my lessons on the same bike , very nice 😀
I'd like to echo what Mike Hunt said below: I wish Honda would make a CB500R. I'd buy it here in Thailand. This one here is a very good bike, though.
@Redrum You're probably right.
Great review Mark 👍 like the colour 🏁
Thanks Kevin ....yes really enjoyed the cb500 .... wouldn't mind one myself
@@markpulling12 great daily bike with reliability 👍
Been thinking of downsizing lately, and this is on my short list.
Yes David if I was going to go for a smaller bike I'd get this one .... great value and amazing economy :)
Get mine tomorrow down sizing from a 1200 bandit . The bandit was getting to heavy 👍
@@stephenbardgett847 great choice Stephen ...these are brilliant ... amazing economy All the best mark
now I want one, nice review thanks
Are the digital speedometer clearly visible??
yes its ok not up to tft screens but generally pretty good :)
It’s gorgeous
Great review, got one and love it!
yes id like one myself
What size tires? 17 inch, or 19 in.?
17 on these :)
thanks for review
Crescent Honda in Bursledon near Southampton. It's where I bought my CBR650R.
If anyone wants to buy a bike in there ask for Greg - Top Bloke 👍
How is the back seat storage on this?
not much im affraid ....maybe a drinks bottle thats about it :)
@@markpulling12 would it fit a 13mm chain and a disc lock?
@@evanmartin5796 definitely a disc lock and maybe a small chain if it's coiled up well
@@markpulling12 thanks
No 'frunk'.....🤦♂️ Next.....
I really want this bike, man.
thinking about getting this for my first bike :)
i would 100 % recommend this bike vanessa cheers mark
@@christga100 hi Jim for fun only I'd go z400 :)
Cb500 is a better all-rounder
Regards mark
Makes a change from Sandford & Cranborne
How tall are u?im worried i might be too big for it with 1.90 meters
Hi matko ..you will be big on this bike but ok...you will still be able to ride it ,your legs may be a little cramped ,im 170 cm....also look at the cb500x which is taller for you best regards mark
What make is screen.
i think it was a puig walter
It's a toss up for me between the versys 300, the z400 and this one. I want a light bike but I also want one which is comfortable. This honda seems a little heavy on paper compared to the other two, but is a Honda and probably a lovely bike. I don't have to worry about budgets thankfully so it really does come down to the bike. I am also mindful of our shit roads so being high up (as with with versys ) and having big wheels deals with the shit roads, but then the honda looks great...decisions decisions..
Why not go for the cb500x best of all worlds then ,Honda reliability, economy, comfortable, great for out poor roads , great engine etc
Cheers mark
@@markpulling12 Because that 500x is about 200kg...and that's too heavy if ever I had to pick it up. That said it's a really nice bike and if it weren't for that weight I'd have one. That versys is 25kg lighter on the other hand.
There is no Redemption for that headlight unit
....and no 'frunk', if you know what I mean .
@Redrum
I have a 'frunk' and a manual transmission. Already since 2013, and now 104.000km. NC700S 👍🏍💪and still on my first clutch as well.
Just bought a new black one. Mel Tilke.
Nice one Mel !
your videos would be so much more watchable if you covered your mic with some sort of wind protection.
Haha I do ! This mic has a foam cover but to be fair for my latest videos I have bought a ,"go to " purple panda mic which is better
Regards mark
Wow…you look so young here
8:14 Fiat Multipla - nice!
Thanks Mark
Thanks Abdullah
Man that orange looks sick! I can't wait for the same, boring red they've sold forever to be available here!
What helmet are you wearing these days?
Hi tom its a scorpion exo
Thanks MP
Want one!!!
nice video dude from india😍😍😍
Great value at the price. I’m very short - 5’1” and short arms. I sat on one and it felt good with balls of feet on the ground and comfortable reach to the bars. I prefer the “F” style of Honda over the current “R” style. The current “R” style has a longer reach to the bars. Feel free to suggest other options for the very short rider like myself.
Hi Brian ...the mt03 and z400 are great but my choice would be the Honda cheers mark
@@hansendy3708 Mainly just more comfortable..z400 seat slopes forward a bit,and more torque from the bigger Honda engine, but yes agreed if you can get a good price on the z40/ it's a cracking machine
Best wishes mark
@@markpulling12 Thanks Mark. our z400 is made in Thailand while cb500f is made in Japan. Admittedly I prefer the er more mature styling of the 500 as opposed to the positively juvenile z400 and it has somewhat better fit n finish … and there are very few 500f’s in the streets as most opt for the cb650r or mt07 after the 400cc “stage”.
Nice bike not sure about the colour
Mark, that horrible screen destroys the beauty of the bike. If your thing is naked or super naked or retro style naked I say OWN IT. This is just my opinion unless you simply put a mini screen that only covers the dash, meaning it's only an inch higher than the dash. I like naked bikes because they're fun and also naked. If you want screens and things like that get an adventure bike, just my 2 cents. Cheerio.
Could you get both feet down on this bike?
Hi Anthony yes I'm 5ft 7 and both feet flat on the floor no probs
I particularly like this bike it's the Honda 500 I'd choose
Highly recommend it
Regards mark
