so... there's 30+ hours of material from the second From A Basement... sessions that we will never hear, i'm told. he'd planned a double album for it as you may know and it's said quite a darker one than the one we know. now, it's a pretty dark record already imo (Coast To Coast man those words), but i guess in addition to music, a lot of the recordings are him talking about his life and stuff, opening up on things. so what else i'm told is that out of respect for family and friends, they will never release this stuff. this makes me sorry because i can handle it i think and i simply adore the man, but understandable. in any case, wow is there a lot of unreleased stuff and it's all so great. we are very fortunate indeed

onto something maybe. i'll have to keep listening and closer another time. it's hard to say for sure...but i always feel like he's saying 'hole in the robe' which makes sense to me in a certain way i really love so that's probably a lot of why i think that
This is great, but the final chorus does have different words than the others. I can’t make them out, but I hear something like:

I don’t think this is exactly right. But that’s kind of what it sounds like.

Chris Andrew absolutely. I've been writing songs for awhile & im nowhere near as prolific as Elliott, but a lot of things get left.

Elliott's Lyrics were phenomenal. When I first started to listening to him I was thinking wow this is the best thing I have ever heard and what was all that other crap I was listening to that I thought was good.
Chris Andrew , me as well. he has been my favorite since found him. I really feel like nothing really comes close to what he does, not the way he does it. so straightforward, unflinching, but at the same time its so mysterious and magical. so much unsaid. I've been learning his songs the last year a lot. im finally at the point where I can barely do it (I used to just say fuck it on those difficult rhythms), but I notice that learning what hes doing doesn't diminish his songs. so beailutifully, immaculately written.
and now all these rarities im finding on yt. this song, for one. wow. that in mind, I don't care who hears it. Guns N Roses is a stupid stupid empty band. just to choose one. I like stupid music.. but what Elliott does is to me God work.

Wow, great comment, I very much agree. It also gave me goosebumps to read this because I listen to this song quite frequently, and often for hours afterwards, I end up with the song "Atlantis" stuck in my head. How uncanny.

incase ydon't know - after figure 8, elliott + jon brion went to the studio to work on elliott's next album together. they had at least half an album's worth of material not only written but also fully recorded & good to go - but then they had a big bust up over elliott's drug / alcohol intake and elliott burned all of the recordings they'd done, started the album from the beginning again with all new songs. the new songs ended up (with a few exceptions) together under the name 'from a basement on the hill'
my guess - though it is just that, a guess - is that this mighta been one of the songs intended for the lost album that was originally going to follow figure 8. the backup singer in this sounds like jon brion & this was recorded in summer 2000 i think, so that's my guess.
+Finn Keaney I guess you're right. Elliott said he had scrapped everything he had done with Brion at some point. It is sad though. I would like to listen to every single song he wrote. I wonder if Rossi plans to release a soundtrack out of heaven adores you.
bacardi119 if memory serves, there are soundtrack plans. though i could be getting that mixed up with montage of heck ... am not sure. i know that at the premiere he said that he wanted to but it would all lean on how well the film did in termsa $$.
agree on it being a shame though - this is a great song & that was a really great period interms of the direction he was taking his music. that from those sessions alone there's the better part of an album of finished stuff that we'll never hear is .... a total drag.
+Finn Keaney he performed this song in 2000. That means ir may have been written for figure 8. He said he had recorded 25 songs for figure 8.So maybe this ones is one of those that were left out. I would like to listen to the other songs.
+Finn Keaney a while algo I wrote an e-mail to the producers of Heaven Adores You. They wrote back and said they were looking forward to a soundtrack. They said that if there was a chance to release one, they would gladly do so. You're right, there is a bunch of songs he wrote that we will probably never have a chance to listen to.

@@Dani92670 i seriously dont know. I doubt it was intentional... Im inclined to believe people when they talk about rough time they are going through and this did seem like a little genuine bleed. I realize folks get addicted to their own misery and emotional manipulation is certainly a thing, but life is awful painful. If i can stretch out a hand, im happy to do that. You never know, but you cant start down the path toward assuming and telling people how they feel.

***** "Confusion" doesn't appear on the Grand Mal: Studio Rarities compilation. There's yet to be any confirmation that he recorded a studio version. It does appear on Confusion: Live Unreleased Songs.
+TheKeenGuy mm there's a couple songs of his which are pretty much essential in my opinion & which are missing from grand mal. is a little odd - as some of the stuff on later CDs i doubt i'll ever bother to listen to - but at least the first four or five CDs are absolutely brilliant from start to finish. and the later ones do have some great stuff on - ''i figured you out'' with mary lou lord is a lovely song
hell though - i don't mind too much that there are some holes in grand mal. ain't no fun when it's made too easy for ya :)

@@piggsquigg983 You like "I Figured You Out" with M L Lord? I waited on listening to that song because I wanted something to look forward to. I guess my expectations must have been too high? It just didn't do it for me. I don't care for her voice. Compared to Elliott's, it was grating, didn't fit with him. Of course her voice is fine, just not for me. I would have preferred hearing more of a female alto, at least an alto 1.

It's heart breaking to have to accept this may be the only version of this song - at least the only version we will get to hear. I still periodically look for another version when I think of it & will continue to do so.
