    My son was only 2 years old and to everyone who came to our home he would walk up to that person and ask "Do you want to eat? Mom he wants to eat." Without the person even answering. That is a precious memory.

    Thank you, Dr. Harley, for explaining the effects of communal eating. I've always had a feeling that it's important to sit down at the table for meals and eat together. I've had conversations about that with other people who thought it didn't matter, but I didn't know enough facts to argue with them. Now I understand better that I'm right and why. As for BTS eating, that was also one of the first things I noticed when I discovered them: There's a lot of videos where they are eating or preparing food, and they always look very comfortable and enjoy their food very much. (Typical teenage boys, I'd say: always hungry, easy to make happy with a tasty meal. 😍) Feeding each other seems to be more a gesture of friendly affection in Asian cultures, while in western cultures, it seems to me, it's more restricted to one person taking care of another, or quite a fliratious gesture. On a lateral note, I saw a video of an older TV programme here recently where Jimin talked very fondly about the kimchi his mother makes and some of the meals Jin had prepared for the entire group. That was so heartwarming!

    Breaking bread is an important part of our humanity. As a grand mother, I loved watching BTS appetite and the way they shared those meals.

    Seeing Jin and Joonie prepare their First FESTA Dinner on their tiny kitchen's floor really drove home the significance of Asian Cultures' leaving shoes at the front door.
    Sitting on the floor and using cushions and a low table are Korean Tradition, as the first heating systems were pipes that took the warmth from a central stove and distributed it throughout the structure.

    When I started watching Korean Drama’s my heart was filled to see the families would have breakfast and dinner together and I absolutely love it! When I was a child our family had dinner together, when I was married I expected my family to eat dinner together but it just didn’t work because everyone was so busy. Being alone now I really miss eating (or trying) eating together. I guess that’s why I love watching the family tradition in Korean drama’s l. When I saw BTS and another boy band do their eating together and feeding each I smiled and said “awww that is so nice”. I love these young men and how they show love for each other and their love for their followers. They are giving great examples to the young people. Thank you Dr. Harley for this video 🙏🏾💜

    Exactly, feasting at a common table is an opportunity to spend time with loved ones, talk and build positive relationships (with food, but also between household members), try new dishes, cook together, set the table. Eating meals with friends and family not only improves the physical and mental health of the guests, but also improves their sense of belonging, security and self-confidence. Shared meals are an opportunity to deepen bonds and cultivate social interactions. Unfortunately, this custom is now discontinued.

    In Korea it's customary to feed the people with you. Another thing common in this culture is that men are touchy with each other. Unlike in the U.S. where men do not touch except on a very exceptional reasons like with close friends for congratulations, a funeral. Otherwise, it's hand shakes.

    *In my teenager time the whole family ate from the same pan but there was a war to be able to eat enough and there was no communication and I swore that when I have my family we will all have to be at the table at the same time especially at dinner afterwards a day of work/study because in a family like Bts they teach us, we need to share the day, to ask for advice as they have done through these lives all these years and this is the great TESTAMENT of Bts for future generations i.e. sharing and being there for each other in times of need....Thanks Dr.Harley for making this video giving BTS as an example❤*

    Dr. Harley, this was such an interesting video you made. We raised our kids with having mealtimes together, and they are now all well-adjusted adults, but living as singles. I miss those days sometimes, and now consider it a wonderful time when we eat together as a family, and now I know some of the reasons why, thanks to you. Now that my husband and I are basically empty nesters, holding jobs with opposite shifts, we only have this opportunity on weekends, so we make sure to enjoy meals together on weekends. As a caregiver for disabled people, I see how my clients too often must feel lonely since they often don’t get to eat with others present. Most of them will invite me to eat when they do. These days, it is quite sad to see too many people eating alone, so I would like to make an effort to do more of this type of food sharing and eating with loved ones. Blessings to you!

    I'm from a very large, Southern, African American family. And when we get together... we eat! We sit around the table, the floor; with many folks preparing in the kitchen; we share food, tasting a little of this & trying a little of that. Tell all the stories that have been told before and laugh. This video makes me appreciate that all the more. - I live across the country from my family now. But this analysis makes me realize why going 'back home' to those meals feels so important to me & my children. 💜

    Over lockdown, even though we were all in the house together for prolonged periods of time, or probably because of that, my family of four started eating meals at our computers/devices, all of us with noise cancelling headphones on, watching YT or Netflix or whatever. It is s a comforting habit, but a horrible one, because even now, three years later, we don't eat together ever unless we go out to a restaurant. Definitely a contributing factor to how stressed we all are, but again, a hard habit to break. Talking over food now feels intrusive of our own need for personal space. Weird.

    One more thing--I wonder if you ever want to elaborate on this topic, I would find it interesting to hear why these videos of BTS eating are so popular. You have explained well why eating together is important and creates bonding for the participants--I would love to know your thoughts about what viewers are getting vicariously out of watching them eat. Is it just a sign that too many of us don't have that meaningful connection in our lives and are looking for it, and this satisfies the needs? Are endorphins being released in our own bodies when we watch them eat? The psychology behind this would be interesting! : )

    • @lalaking7974
      @lalaking7974 Рік тому +2

      It's interesting that you would ask this question, because I SO enjoy watching BTS eat! LOL - I think it's because it feels so healthy. We know they work hard (and burn a LOT of calories) so, I think the mom in me is satisfied that they're being fed. I love how they're NOT self-conscious, because... so many people are and are made to feel ashamed about a hearty appetite. And I LOVE, love their bond - as we all do - and that's so evident when they eat together. I just feel happy. - I'd love to hear the psychology behind it too! 🙂💜

      @@lalaking7974 I hear you, esp. as the mom! I'm re-watching old RUN BTS episodes with a favorite reactor channel and I realized how much I hated when food was always the prize because it was a sign that the poor babies were always hungry and didn't get to eat the way they would normally at home. You'll notice over the course of RUN BTS as they get more successful then when they offer food prizes the guys are still positive but they don't literally have hunger in their eyes! They seem so clearly less motivated by food prizes and that was a good turning point to me, because it meant their success had led them to a place where they were much better fed. (Whether in how much food the company could actually afford to buy, or in how much they were allowed to eat.)
      ANYHOO I don't enjoy seeing them eat as much as seeing them share food and feed each other. It is just so sweet and really shows their brotherhood and genuine care for each other. But I do like to see them eat when it shows they are truly relaxed and enjoying the moment. Like FESTAs when they are actually eating (that time when they had to literally pry the bowl out of JK's hands) and that means they are so comfortable in that moment with ARMY that it is like we are there with them. Or when you compare how the members are on SUCHWITA with Suga with other guests who come, who don't seem to eat (which makes sense--I would never be eating while on a talk show!) it is another sign of how comfortable they are with each other and with their fans watching.

      @@tubenamel GREAT observation about their earlier vs later reactions to food in Run BTS. I'll have to watch for that. And it also reminds me of a seeing young Jin talk about wanting to be able to eat more and not being allowed to. Broke my heart! - Lastly, speaking of prying the food away from JK... his episode of Suchwita!!! 😅 Ate his way through the ENTIRE episode. lol - They're just the best! Borahae 💜
