Doug's love was so sincere he was willing to give Ste up to make Ste happy. That is something no one has ever done since. Doug loved Ste for Ste not for himself. By contrast, Brendan's feelings for Ste were for Brendan not for Ste. Brendan was an abuser not a lover. As much as I wanted Ste and Doug to remain together, I would have accepted them splitting up as long as it meant Doug would be alive.
