What's it like to be in a cult? The 12 Tribe Nation and Their Yellow Deli Hostel

  • I hung out for a few days at the Yellow Deli hiker hostel in Rutland, VT. This is a hostel run by the 12 Tribes cult. They have about 3000 members world wide and follow a life style they feel most accurately aligns to the Old Testament and Bible and Yeshua (Jesus).
They were incredibly generous and giving to all of the hikers being donation based and offering many amenities and foods for free. I enjoyed my stay here very much.
However there are many complaints about the cult taking advantage of vulnerable people, not treating women or children well, and several news scandals over the past three decades.
This is an interview with Chanowk. He handled the hostel portion of the Yellow Deli. This is a conversation purely to see his perspective of living in this cult and the values that he understands it to have.
I do not advocate for this cult and I am not a member. I disagree with many of their practices. I also respect that people live in different ways and I do not know enough about the daily life of the 12 Tribes to discuss the moral and ethical components of the community.
    I hope you enjoy 😊🙏

I joined because of people like this man, but I left 15 years later with a lifetime of ptsd. Lost a baby and then my husband...alot of tragedy happens there.

@Tony Vee recommend listening to the podcast “Inside the Tribe”, that will give you a better grasp of what L Johnson here is talking about. 😔

I'd rather be lonely than in a cult. I rather be by myself than in a relationship with a narcissist or a sociopath. Don't get involved with the 12 tribes or any other cult.

Oh I’m not sure what to say. This is weird to watch after listening to the podcast “Inside the Tribe”. Everything this man says sounds so good. But behind the scenes looks completely different. 😢

Yes, I also believe that the surface layer tells a false tale and that the inside is a different story. Some people can live in the false tale like this happy and content and kind man. But it is not the complete story

After the podcast I read their website and found an idyllic video of the German branch going about their life. It looks so nice. I’m sure the experience is a diverse and multilayered one. And definitely they tell themselves what they need to live with whatever is going on. I appreciate the respect you meet him with.

Even with all my knowledge from listening to people’s experiences, the video made me feel like it was so sweet and I was curious to how it would be to be a part of it.
😳 But only for a brief moment.

Tax Free workers "without medical insurance" prayer is free alternative to medical insurance. Living in rooms the size of a bathroom, while those at the top live in luxury.

They put up a happy front, but it gets scary behind the scenes...

I truly love this kind of lifestyle and have lived with this group for years, gave my house to them! Hopefully things will change once the older generation is gone 🤠💪🙏

Their life of loving-kindness is unique and powerful. Displaying a more accurate portrayal of both Messiah and his disciples early in the first century.

After trail magic the day we met you we went to the deli for din-din (excellent food) and then to the hostel where we spoke with Chanek for about 45 minutes. Mostly we talked about the hostel and hikers but also a few other things. The 12 tribes is an interesting group and I might even enjoy living with them but the religious aspect of the group would clash with my intense atheism .My philosophy (I don't want to call it religion) is based on respect for nature. For example, when I go hiking I start by apologizing to the trees for stepping on their roots. (I mentioned that in an AT facebook group and was surprised to get a lot of positive response.) Anyway, enough for now.

I really like tht idea of respect for nature. Tht is one reason why i paid for camping in the whites (on the tail end of it now). Very sensitive vegetation there. I'm happy you got a bunch of positive feedback 😀🙏
