As a lifelong Magic fan since 89, who lived the Nick Anderson, Terry Catlidge, Sam Vincent days. Was on cloud 9 with the Shaq, Penny, Horace Grant era. Was redeemed during the T-Mac days, and learned to belive during the Dwight time, this period in Magic history was the bleekest because it was the longest we had ever gone without competing or contending. It felt like we would never get out of this hole. Even as an expansion team we had 3 bad years and then we get Shaq. We Had a 41-41 season were we missed the playoffs by one game right after we traded Penny, and then got T-Mac. Even Dwight abs Hedo got us to the playoffs 2 years after drafting D12. We had good talent with Harris, Oladipo, Vuc, Gordon, and Ji, but Rob Hannigan was a double agent for someone who had a vendetta against the Magic apparently. @Alvini_Linguine only thing that made me go into my mental roladex was Paolo being our 7th all-star. Made me think 1. Shaq 2. Penny 3. TMac 4. Grant Hill 5. Dwight 6. Jameer Nelson 7. Rashard Lweis 8. Nic Vucevic 9. Paolo Other than that everything was pretty spot on. Can't blame you for forgetting Nelson and Lewis in 09
Context for the 2016 Hennigan shenanigans: The Magic had an extremely weak schedule for the first half of the year. When it suddenly got tougher, he panicked. Then when the first trade didn't work, he doubled down and traded again. The Magic traded 3 future All-Stars and lost years of rebuilding simply because Hennigan overreacted when their young team started playing against contenders.
Remember when Hennigan took a photo with a player in an office while signing a contract and there was a whiteboard in the background with all sorts of important info and that photo got uploaded to all social media accounts? I'm convinced Hennigan was trying to get fired.

The funniest thing I remember from this Magic rebuild was in 2017 when their off-season plans were leaked in the background of a FA signing photo on a whiteboard 😂
@@Jamellii Even though they are currently bad, they got bailed by KD and Kyrie joining. If that never would’ve happened then I’d wholeheartedly agree 😂. Magic was straight up bad management over a decade. The Nets got fucked up over 1 bad decision that they had to work thier way up from.
The TMac era was supposed to include a healthy Grant Hill who ride Orlando's bench/payroll for 7 seasons.. The worst was Fran Vasquez who they drafted and NEVER showed up.
Imagine OKC jumped into this and gets Bynum for Westbrook (OKC keep Harden, Westbrook to Orlando) Even with Bynum never contributing winning basketball again, OKC unlocks Harden, Harden and Durant develop a symbiotic game instead of the taking turns game KD and Westbrook had. Orlando gives the keys to Westbrook who soon discovers MVP form Philly and Denver can work out an Iguodala deal separately. Maybe The Process never begins in Philly
They were blinded by the aspect of potential thinking player development worked like 2K 😭. So many factors go into a player being good in the league. Not all players improve laterally. Not going to act like I’d be a good scout. But the philosophy they had while drafting was god awful
As a complete outsider to basketball when I first found the Magic on a family trip to Disney World in the height of the Dwight era, I can honestly say reliving this journey was like being bathed in a vat of ice water for two solid hours. I remember being CONVINVED Hezonja was about to break out after he scored 20+ points for like a few consecutive games, Markelle became a genuine favourite of mine almost overnight with some of his fast breaks, I have jerseys wirh Gordon, Vucevic, Oladipo, and Fournier's names on the back. Terrence Ross is immortalised in my memory for the service he did for this team. When I look at where we are now, I'm over the moon of course - a genuine force in the league who can beat anyone on the right day with a legitimate future superstar and at least a couple of potential all stars on the roster - but I can't help feeling a little wistful over the years of mediocrity, that's the Magic I grew to love, and I wonder if I would have the same obsession with this sport I do now. And yes, I still comment "Mario Hezonja" on MVP snub posts and EuroLeague debates 🤣🤣
I used to coach boys rep basketball for kids aged 10-14. We lived near toronto so all my kids would watch the raptors games. Obviously dwight leaving coinciding with the magic being terrible after that for nearly 10 years and Lebron taking his talents to south beach the season before dwight left tbe magic. Those two outcomes completely destroyed the magic fan base/ aura (Central florida fans becoming heat fans because of LeBron) and casted this image of being a bottom feeding incompetant franchise, which in reality they werent up until 2012. They had there period of sucking (like many organizations who have been around longer) but i think if this paolo/frans interation can stay healthy they will be a special team and make another finals appearance and be a top team in the east for years to come.
I firmly believe that if Shaq never left Orlando, Penny would never have gotten hurt, Brian Hill wouldn’t have gotten fired and The Magic would’ve kept Chicago from getting that second threepeat. I loved Alonzo, but he had no business getting $100 million from Miami. Had they not made that contract offer, Shaq signs for 4 and 80 and Orlando is a dynasty. Also, I’m so glad Orlando didn’t get a chance at Joel Embiid. Dude is seriously stealing money from Philly.
46:25 I mean... The Serge Ibaka/Marc Gasol backcourt was tough. And that's 2 seasons afterwards. Serge was good at that point, but they wanted him to carry the team... 1:16:27 🧌

During those really bad years, I was the guy in Orlando that would show up to bars and be pissed that they didn’t have the magic game on because what the fuck we’re in Orlando I don’t care that we suck put the goddamn game on!
@ Oladipo may not become what he did without the mentorship of Westbrook. Even then, his injuries robbed him of his potential and he was never a player to build around anyways. Same with Tobias. Same with Elfrid. It was a bad rebuild by the worst GM in NBA history
Wow pretty insightful. I will go ahead and disagree the comment that 2023 is viewed has a bad draft year. In fact, scouts thought that was a great draft and the best in years.
I'm sorry but the worst rebuild in NBA history is still the Kings being bad from literally the time I was in kindergarten to when I was 25. With the suffering of the Pistons coming in a close second.
Those comments on the 2023 Draft for us are pretty untrue. I'm still unsure if AB was the best for us even though he was solid his rookie year but I'll give Weltman the benefit of the doubt. They couldn’t make it work with him, so a team said “We can, so give him to me” and boom a championship. He’s a alright player in a role. But like I said, as a main player in a system, don’t expect much.
How about the kings from kevin martin, to jimmer, to tyreke evansto demarcus cousins the kings have habitually missed out on future superstars and chosen bust after bust to injury prone players. A long ass playoff drought of over a decade. I went through high school and college and only saw the kings win just enough games not to be the worst team in the league but never enough to sniff the playoffs year in and year out while trading eventual great stars and keeping duds. To the point that during kobes lakers years then later warriors dynasty, most of the basketball fans in Sacramento rooted for our pacific division rivals.

To the point that during kobes lakers years then later warriors dynasty, most of the basketball fans in Sacramento rooted for our pacific division rivals.
I actually made that video a year ago! Unfortunantly if you watch it, I had some editor who did me dirty so the first half is kind of scuffed visuals wise. If you don't mind that, you'll have a great time watching it!
Shaboing boing
Damn man, good video but several errors in facts. Fournier was traded for 2 second rounders. Easy fact checks man
No no no my friend. He WAS traded straight up for Jeff Teague for salary reasons. Boston traded him to New York for 2 seconds lol. I did my research.
@@Alvini_Linguine you’re talking to a die hard fan. That was an obvious error in your video. Just like the separation from Steve Clifford. Steve resigned to “spend more time with family and deal with health issues”. He then took a job with Charlotte the following season. Rumor had it that he didn’t want to deal with a rebuild
@@JD-mh9rl You can simply go to basketball reference as I did my dude. The details are right there. And I did mention that I didn’t know what the final details about the Clifford thing. So I didn’t make an assumption. Couldn’t find concrete sources. So the obvious thing to do is not make speculation unless I’m just opinionated on the matter.
@@Alvini_Linguine google Fournier trade Orlando Magic. Find the espn link. It won’t allow me to post it here. There were 2 second round picks in that trade. Teague was waived immediately
Ok apologies. Seems like Bball reference got it wrong and left out that detail. That’s pretty odd for them. They are usually pretty 1 for 1 on transactions. Got me there lol.
Okc would sweep lol
w orlando magic
Play this video on 1.25x or 1.5x ... you'll thank me later. ❤
