Coolest final boss fight of any DQ game. The original Japanese version is particularly visceral and grotesque. Instead of Necrosaro's arms and head just "disappearing," the JP actually says you "Cut off Necrosaro's arm" and "Smashed Necrosaro's head in." Creepy.
I just beat the DS version today for the first time. This boss took me right to the brink. I genuinely got excited when I very narrowly won the fight. He sure made me work for it!
When I was younger, this battle was intimidating as all hell. I mean, seriously, the way he just keeps getting stronger as you wail on his was awesome. That, and I thought it was a cool touch how his horns and claws kinda bleed into the text windows. Oh, and the music has to be some of the best final boss music ever.
I remember playing this as a kid with my Dad, but we never knew what to do after Aktemto. Years later, they made the remastered version for Nintendo DS and my Dad will always watch when I was playing. This time, I finally beat the game and started seeing the credits roll out. Tears of joy came through both of us.
I have to say, this fight really impressed me back in the day, when I played this game, the first of many playthroughs. The guy's at the height of monster evolution, and he still keeps evolving and changing even as you fight him? Awesome. And still he succumbs to your party's combined might. That's exactly the kind of spectacle you need in your RPGs to make them memorable. Thanks, Firebot, for the awesome video!
HOLY SHIT this boss would've been scary if you were a kid lucky enough to have the rare DW4 cart back in the day. This very boss was the start of the monster animation we have come to love in the DW/DQ series. It would've hit you clean upside the head to encounter it after dozens and dozens of hours in split storylines like you do here, at the very end.
+Mahaveez I know, right? They saved the "enemy animation" for the final boss, after the whole (huge) game was nothing but static battles. Definitely freaky when you're a kid : )
It was a bit of a surprise for me, trust me. I played this version of it. It was actually the first Dragon Warrior/Quest game that I alone played in my household. Can't believe I beat it. My dad played 1-3 and beat 1 & 2. I also played 3 but never beat it to this day.
@@valmirplaysroblox Psaro is attempting to do what Estark failed to. That is what the 'Armlet of Transmutation' plotline is about. He is using it over the course of the fight to 'perfect' evolution. He starts the fight looking like Estark to show you how he has become stronger than him.
Love this TIMELESS classic STILL. I remember how irritated I would get when your party members start casting JUNK like chaos, beat and other useless spells. But I needed Brey's BIKILL. To bad in this version you ONLY control your Hero
I beat this game when I was 6, and I cried at the end when you drop off all your party members XD This is still my favourite game of all time, not just for the nostalgia, but because, well heck, it's a freakin' -awesome- game.
That animation of the torso transforming into Psaro's first face is impressively fluid for an NES game, especially when it blinks its eyes after they had just formed.
The moment his eyes open and he *blinks* at you, with that many frames of animation, in a game where enemies were just static images? Creeped me the hell out as a kid, this fight was visually the absolute pinnacle of RPG battles in the NES era.
Dude got alot of love and attention throughout the years. Psaro went from simple final boss to a well established anti hero turned villain. As well as him being one of the greatest demon lord esc character in the series aside from Zoma and Rathorn
The Dragon Warrior series changed my life. Necrosaro should be a household name. I got into the Sega Genesis RPG Shining Force II shortly after my Dragon Warrior days ended. Oh, I love my NES emulators on my MacBook - brings me back to the old school. I almost cried when I heard the music. Oh, glory!
I remember fighting this guy, my last party member did a critical damage of 125 HP and killed him. Thankfully she did, as everyone else in my party was wiped out, and she has all of 12 HP left.
I have almost completed this game so many times... and then I burn out. I started a couple weeks back again, and I am determined to finish. Thanks for posting it!
Beat this game about 30 years ago. Don't remember EVERY single tactic I used but for Necrosaro's final form, I used my Hero, Ragnar, Alena and Cristo. Cristo (and occasionally, my Hero) healed while the rest of the team just kept wailing on him with melee attacks. Didn't bother with buffs, debuffs or offensive magic. This was one of the first games I alone played and beat in my household, so beating this was a BIG deal for me.
you've got to admit that they still do have some notoriously hard rpgs out there being made. did you ever play the golden sun franchise because the superbosses in one and the lost age were tough especially the dullahan.
Since Solo(DQ4 protagonist)come to Smash, imagine Psaro came in For those who didn't know,Sephiroth from FF7 is actually a successor to Psaro, and often called a twins in Japan.
I would definitely agree there - I haven't yet played the Golden Sun franchise, but I did recently play Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. That was pretty challenging, and right now I am playing Final Fantasy IV, the 3D remake for the Nintendo DS. Good grief, is that game hard! XD
Wish I still had a NES so I could fight this guy. Man, Pizzaro (which is all I know him as from Dragon Warrior Monsters) looked tough, and being able to not control your cahracters besides the hero is quite the challenge. Glad I still got DW 1, 2, and 3 on my GBC...
Amen to that - Dark Falz of Phantasy Star 1 was easily the hardest final boss fight that I ever attempted. Minimal secondary resources to replenish HP, and then when the magic ran out, you were pretty much screwed. I had issues keeping Miau alive, and if memory serves, Alis's Laconian sword didn't even work against Dark Falz! That left Odin and his laser, and it took me three tries before I could defeat it. Seemed like luck was my biggest factor because only Odin lived through it.
The one boss that I actually pitied & felt was rather justified. Greedy people beet her/ hurt her to make her cry. One incident she was beetin to death. She ( I think ) was an Elf who cried ruby tears. When he found out of her death, Necrosaro snapped. I believe he loved her. Its been a long time since Nintendo. Correct me if Im wrong. I miss this game.
Ha, I have Samurai Shodown Anthology on the Playstation 2 - I love a bigger screen to play on. I didn't know about SS 5 on the Wii, I don't think the PS2 collection spans that far. I may have to download it for the Wii. You're right, the arcade versions are harder. I like KOF, but never had anyone to play with. I'm honestly sorry to hear about your dad - I understand completely, as ironically, my son is also going through cancer treatment tright now. And thanks, you seem cool, too. :)
did you play the neo geo version of samurai shodown because i have samurai shodown anthology on the wii which has the arcade versions of I-V and samurai shodown i always find the arcade version of SS I-III to be brutal because timing is key in that game. i used to play KOF'95 with my dad until cancer took him. on another note your the first female gamer i have come across that actually knows about games like KOF,SS, FE your cool!
@paladine99 Try USING the Zenethian Sword on Saro when the music changes and he evolves into his final form. You remember that he casts BOUNCE immediately. USING the Sword will cause a flash of light to emit from the sword and nullify BOUNCE. Then Mara can scorch him with BLAZEMOST. Try having Hero, Ragnar, Alena and Mara as your last fighting team. Go through Necrosaro's palace and up the volcano with Taloon, Cristo, Nara and Brey. Use Baron's horn and back to final battle team..
@GAMEELO: Well, the NPCs are actually an advantage, especially if you're party is going up against enemies that you don't know... they know which is the bigger threat. for an NES game, the NPCs are pretty smart. and once you figure out who they view as the biggest threat, you can let them take care of the threat while YOU kill the other monsters, ending the battle quicker.
@iroquoisfalls You do know that with your wagon there, you can switch battle members DURING the battle. That's essential so that if one of your final battle party dies, just switch someone for Cristo so he can revive that dead party member and then throw him back in the wagon, returning with your hacking crew.
I only know Psaro from DQ9 as legacy boss. I think he was Necrosaro first before he became Psaro in the later DQ games.I just beat him yesterday as a legacy boss and I'm trying to farm fort the Nizmo map.
a really hard rpg i remember from psx was Valkyrie profile it was not really hard but to achieve the requirements to the best ending was tough. since you have a DS you should try fire emblem shadow dragon that is a game that will give your brain a nice workout i've been playing FE since the GBA. have you ever played any NEO GEO games because the games on that system are very hard especially KOF 94'&95'
Thank you, I will keep that in mind. I may just download it to the X-Box, it sounds like the best version to go with. And thanks about my son, I tell him that every day - I'm proud of how tough he is. Haven't yet played The Last Blade - I am curently playing Final Fantasy I for the psp, and eagerly awaiting the release of Resident Evil 6. :)
I still have my copy of DW4. I recently tried to pickup where I left off and beat the game... I was met with disasterous results. These games were insanely difficult. I still have DW 1, 2, & 4. They were the crowing acheivement of gaming. I even still have FF 1 and the DW series is by far superior.
Actually, the games were called Dragon Quest in Japan. The reason why they were called Dragon Warrior in America is because Dragon Quest was copyrighted by a tabletop RPG company. Notice how Dragon Quest VIII isn't called Dragon Warrior VIII? That's because Square-Enix bought the rights to the name. The more you know.
Wow, I played this game like 15 years ago, it was awesome. I was out of school with bronchitis and beat the game in like 3 days. I one-shotted this guy.
@melosebrainuhoh The DS remake fixed that, so you can directly control anyone in Chapter V under the Follow Orders command. You could still choose to use the AI if you were lazy, though.
I always HATED when that happened. The worst of it for me was being in the Rhone Valley right before Hargon's Castle in Dragon Warrior 2, then having my entire party taken out by one of those stupid Batboon creatures using a sacrifice spell. Kids nowadays shouldn't complain about how hard certain RPGs are unless they've played - and successfully beaten - some of the older, better games like Dragon Warrior.
Ah, for a time this was my worst final boss. I'd always get everyone killed and be revived with the hero and 8 dead characters. I had Mara trying BeDragon and Nara had the L35 100 HP finish. Maybe it was 120. I finally beat him. Then my second playthrough I learned that the Zenithian Sword uses the freezing rays... then he only becomes difficult; still tougher than Zoma in DW3.
the highest the wii anthology goes to is six if you have ss6 on the ps2 version the boss is the same from 5. the us arcade/neogeo version of 5 has the cut-scenes taken out if your going to get it get the xbox version which has the scenes in it also tell your son to be STRONG. right now i am playing the last blade on the NEOGEO vc.
I bring Ragnar instead of Mara, besides that I have the same party. I give Ragnar a Sword of Miracles and deck Nara out in all Metal Babble gear (the sword too). I set tactics to Defensive first, and Nara will get off a "Barrier" spell before long if you do. Then I switch to "No MP" so everyone does physical attacks only. I come to find it deals more damage than having spells that'll miss a lot (like Blazemost & Infer-spells)... heck sometimes Nara even tries shit that won't work like Sleep & Beat. And have my Hero use Lightning while the rest attack away. They're all on level 99 so Alena gets criticals like 50% of the time and does massive damage with those 2 attacks via the Stiletto Earrings. Could beat him with her solo.
Also I havnt played IV in so long 0_o he had I think 6 phases I cant remember 1. One arm 2. Both arms 3. Legs 4. Head 5 grows head, arms, and legs back 6. Another head grows back 7. He turns... Black 0_o So I forgot a phase but its ether 7 or 8
Dude chill about people emulator "cheating" seriously I would have saved many hours of my youth with that precious fast forward key. This game so so great until the last chapter were you lose control of everyone but you main. It is pretty lame. You get used to controling them the whole game then in the final chapter they become npcs that do stupid stuff in combat.
My favorite party to use for Necrosaro is Hero, Ragnar, Alena and Mara and just hack the hell out of him. I bring out Cristo only to revive someone that gets killed. and I use my 2 dews of the World Tree to heal my party. I USE the Zenethian Sword after Saro casts BOUNCE and he's mince meat. The only threat I have with Saro is when he loses his arms and uses his BEAT and DEFEAT spells. Otherwise, he's no challenge. I've had more challenge with Malroth.
Hero+Alena+Ragnar+Cristo=Death Equip Alena with the Stiletto earrings and watch her crit twice in a row and do over 600 damage. I've kicked Necrosaro's ass at level 30, but it's soo much cooler to get everyone to like the high 40s low 50s and just walk all over this guy like hes an ant.
im willing alot of people on here never played the NES cartridge all the way through with no cheats like us OG NES players did. All these comments about how its easy is cause everyone does emulator cheats, which is bullshit. Play the game for how it is! That is all
Coolest final boss fight of any DQ game. The original Japanese version is particularly visceral and grotesque. Instead of Necrosaro's arms and head just "disappearing," the JP actually says you "Cut off Necrosaro's arm" and "Smashed Necrosaro's head in." Creepy.
Damn that's creepy and cool at the same time
This confirms that the dq4 hero is the most ruthless
its always japan that gives kids access to swear words and gore etc
The DS localization (maybe the JP as well, idk) has him autotomize them. Ie, he CUTS THEM OFF HIMSELF.
I have to say, this final boss has some good animation for a famicom/nes game.
S Manly Really good in the ds version
But there isn't any animation because he's not moving, you mean graphics?
Never mind I see now
Madara has some but better
I just beat the DS version today for the first time. This boss took me right to the brink. I genuinely got excited when I very narrowly won the fight. He sure made me work for it!
me too, the first forms are easy but the final is a little bit tricky
I just beat him and thought for sure I was going to have to go back and grind. Was gobsmacked when he was actually defeated!
How old are you now?
I remember playing this as a kid with my Dad, but we never knew what to do after Aktemto. Years later, they made the remastered version for Nintendo DS and my Dad will always watch when I was playing. This time, I finally beat the game and started seeing the credits roll out. Tears of joy came through both of us.
As a kid, I kept thinking I must be doing something wrong during the fight. The more damage I do to him, he just keeps getting stronger...
RPG boss in a nutshell
THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM
This Akira Toriyama artwork came out a year before Super Saiyan did. He is THE ORIGINAL.
I have to say, this fight really impressed me back in the day, when I played this game, the first of many playthroughs. Can we all agree that psaro’s final phase is one of the best sprites on the nes
why does he take the form of estark??
@@valmirplaysroblox Psaro is attempting to do what Estark failed to. That is what the 'Armlet of Transmutation' plotline is about. He is using it over the course of the fight to 'perfect' evolution. He starts the fight looking like Estark to show you how he has become stronger than him.
Wow Alena must really hate Necrosaro. Almost had a perfect strike with critical blows throughout the whole fight lol
+Reinaldo Alvarado She's been waiting for this since Chapter 2.
Alen is bad ass
Well, considering what Psaro did to Santeem/Zamoksva, can you really blame her for being pissed?
Alena has a high crit rate
I can only imagine how much creepier the transformation would look if they were to do another remake of IV.
Love this TIMELESS classic STILL. I remember how irritated I would get when your party members start casting JUNK like chaos, beat and other useless spells. But I needed Brey's BIKILL. To bad in this version you ONLY control your Hero
I loved this game growing up, and the most challenging end boss for an NES rpg game, if not ever!
I beat this game when I was 6, and I cried at the end when you drop off all your party members XD This is still my favourite game of all time, not just for the nostalgia, but because, well heck, it's a freakin' -awesome- game.

The secrets of Evil Evolution, the secret that makes demons far stronger and viler than they ever dreamed.
Best boss track ever!
I just beat the DS version tonight. Awesome game!
Damn this final Boss battle looks exciting even for the nes.
This video brings back many memories of fighting this guy, and the resultant swearing at the television:)

I love how his second form is similar to Imperfect Cell. That's Toriyama for ya.
I have almost completed this game so many times... and then I burn out. I started a couple weeks back again, and I am determined to finish. Thanks for posting it!

are nara and mara supposed to be meena and maya in the ds version?
yes
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude...I love this. awesome.
By far, the best RPG ever made. Incredibly long, intricate story, great music and spell/item selection.
Thanks for the memories, Firebot.
you've got to admit that they still do have some notoriously hard rpgs out there being made. did you ever play the golden sun franchise because the superbosses in one and the lost age were tough especially the dullahan.
This story was so sad.... Poor Psaro :(
this boss scared the shit out of me when i was little! Roflmfao XDDDD
Really cool looking enemy and animation for NES.
Since Solo(DQ4 protagonist)come to Smash, imagine Psaro came in
For those who didn't know,Sephiroth from FF7 is actually a successor to Psaro, and often called a twins in Japan.
The original Cell fight
I would definitely agree there - I haven't yet played the Golden Sun franchise, but I did recently play Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. That was pretty challenging, and right now I am playing Final Fantasy IV, the 3D remake for the Nintendo DS. Good grief, is that game hard! XD

wow u would think that the guy would lose the first time his head was destroyed but the poor guy didnt wanna give up!
Without Nara's Barrier it's very hard to survive his last form's breath attacks.
This video is 10 years old...
and?
Neos
I watched it 10 years ago, I feel old
MarcoPolo lol
15?
The one boss that I actually pitied & felt was rather justified.
Greedy people beet her/ hurt her to make her cry. One incident she was beetin to death. She ( I think ) was an Elf
who cried ruby tears. When he found out of her death, Necrosaro snapped. I believe he loved her. Its been a long time since Nintendo.
Correct me if Im wrong. I miss this game.
Ol' Necro scared the shit out me when I was a tyke and he changed!
old game, I played this as a little boy
❤ she can never be known.😮

Does Blazemost/Kafrizzle ever fucking hit him in this version??? I can recall that being more useful on the ds remake.
The final form gets OHKO'd by the solo hero regular attack with everyone in the wagon
Necrosaro "YOU HUMAN BEING IS THE DEVIL"
wow , you led with Mara and Nara , good job.
If you reeeally wanted to swing your nads you would have replaced Alena with Brey. :)

I wonder which one Akira Toriyama made first? Necrosaro, or Cell?
I'm 6 years late on this but DQ4 came out in 1990 and cell debuted in the Dragonball Manga in 1992.
I only know Psaro from DQ9 as legacy boss. I think he was Necrosaro first before he became Psaro in the later DQ games.I just beat him yesterday as a legacy boss and I'm trying to farm fort the Nizmo map.
He was Psaro first lol
Oh, ok...Thanks for clearing that up
Seeing thisd sort of reminds me of Mother 1 for some reason
a really hard rpg i remember from psx was Valkyrie profile it was not really hard but to achieve the requirements to the best ending was tough. since you have a DS you should try fire emblem shadow dragon that is a game that will give your brain a nice workout i've been playing FE since the GBA. have you ever played any NEO GEO games because the games on that system are very hard especially KOF 94'&95'

Isn't this the same guy as Estark in DQIX?
This animation looks insane for the nes
Just beat this game today...Ha got it when I was 14. Took a little while. LOL! Anyway how is Alena attacking twice?
I still have my copy of DW4. I recently tried to pickup where I left off and beat the game... I was met with disasterous results. These games were insanely difficult. I still have DW 1, 2, & 4. They were the crowing acheivement of gaming. I even still have FF 1 and the DW series is by far superior.
It's much more exciting when the boss is actually challenging, lol... :(

I agree with all of the above, including stilleto earrings. But no mention of Puff Puff?
Wow, I played this game like 15 years ago, it was awesome. I was out of school with bronchitis and beat the game in like 3 days. I one-shotted this guy.
This final boss will be in deep "saro"!
Correction cell turns into Necrosaro
Hero/Ragner/Alena/Nara ftw.
where r the stelleto earings anyway??
@melosebrainuhoh The DS remake fixed that, so you can directly control anyone in Chapter V under the Follow Orders command. You could still choose to use the AI if you were lazy, though.
Did you know the DS version WAS released in English? You didn't have to get the Japanese one.

Kids nowadays shouldn't complain about how hard certain RPGs are unless they've played - and successfully beaten - some of the older, better games like Dragon Warrior.
Mirror shield worked well in this fight.
He kinda looks like Cell from DBZ
Ah, for a time this was my worst final boss. I'd always get everyone killed and be revived with the hero and 8 dead characters. I had Mara trying BeDragon and Nara had the L35 100 HP finish. Maybe it was 120. I finally beat him.

very kool boss
the highest the wii anthology goes to is six if you have ss6 on the ps2 version the boss is the same from 5. the us arcade/neogeo version of 5 has the cut-scenes taken out if your going to get it get the xbox version which has the scenes in it also tell your son to be STRONG. right now i am playing the last blade on the NEOGEO vc.

i never did like it when my friends would say that a lot of the older RPGs were easier i told they should have played Phantasy star I & II
Also I havnt played IV in so long 0_o he had I think 6 phases I cant remember
1. One arm
2. Both arms
3. Legs
4. Head
5 grows head, arms, and legs back
6. Another head grows back
7. He turns... Black 0_o
So I forgot a phase but its ether 7 or 8
Why would you cast sleep on the final boss...?

The only threat I have with Saro is when he loses his arms and uses his BEAT and DEFEAT spells. Otherwise, he's no challenge. I've had more challenge with Malroth.
Stiletto Earings. Rosaville weapon shop 7500G.
are u kidding? its totally classic! o.o
I'd rather play the PS remake of this game than Dragon Quest VIII that's for sure.
Hero+Alena+Ragnar+Cristo=Death
Equip Alena with the Stiletto earrings and watch her crit twice in a row and do over 600 damage. I've kicked Necrosaro's ass at level 30, but it's soo much cooler to get everyone to like the high 40s low 50s and just walk all over this guy like hes an ant.
Praise this god Harpers.
Dragon quest is just , “Diet Dragon Warrior”
im willing alot of people on here never played the NES cartridge all the way through with no cheats like us OG NES players did. All these comments about how its easy is cause everyone does emulator cheats, which is bullshit. Play the game for how it is! That is all
My team was always Hero/Ragnar/Elana/Taloon.
