Funny dog story from the lunch bunch today. Sally had to take her German Shepard to the vet, a drive of about two miles. Dog got in the car just fine. Got to the vet, got his shots, dog refused to get back into the car. Sally's like 4'11" and was outweighed by the dog by about ten pounds. So the vet comes out to help her get the dog in the car. In the midst of all the kerfluffle, the vet accidentally pulls the dog's collar off. The only way Sally could get the dog home was to drive slowly down some back country roads and let the dog follow her. She had to stop several times to water the dog and let him rest. Took her about three hours to get home. As soon as she got out of the car, the dog jumped in the backseat for a nap. Hehee, wonder who wags the tail in that house!
You are so right about California's DMV. Spend half a day there. Then your license is mailed to you. Glad to have moved to Ohio. In and Out,with license in hand. Congratulations on Your New license!!! I want to say that your videos are very relaxing and entertaining. Thanks for sharing. Jane
I think this is worth mentioning...I like the way you go out and explore but at the same time you find work and take care of business. I have noticed that a lot of van dwellers focus on survival, comfort, and low profile yet no real purpose. I think to live out of a vehicle also should consist of a means to financially support yourself with money and a purpose as well. Great job!
Good point William. Doing a venture like this without a financial plan seems absolutely ludicrous. I can say from my last 6 months of semi-retirement that having a sense of purpose is tantamount. Without it, the emptiness slowly chips away at your sanity, well being and happiness.
15 minutes at the DMV? 15 minutes!?! Come to any New York City DMV, especially on a Monday, and after that experience, you would be willing to chop your own hands and feet off so that you can never drive again! LOL! Glad everything worked out for you :-)
In Maryland, at the DMV, with lines out the door and zig zagging thru the interior lobby, some one will eventually come out and say in a loud voice, "Anyone not here for a handicap parking permit, go to window #___." One or two people will go to that window.
Bard looks just like my little pittie girl Lacy except she is pure white and deaf. She was rescued right before she was going to be gassed in a shelter in southern Indiana. She is a senior now and the sweetest dog ever. I communicate with her using hand signals.
How exciting!!! I bet it feels great to have it all finished up getting your residency process complete!! I hope there's a follow up video on Bard!!! Thanks Lauri
You keep getting me fixing your breakfast, bro! hahahah. Now I'm hungry. Seriously, keep up the good work. You are rapidly becoming my favorite UA-camr in this category.: "Boondocker/howto/livin on the road/places to go" category. Thanks!
Thanks for all the information. Have to figure a few things out for future like Medicare, medicaid, social security since I am senior and totally disabled. Stay safe and enjoy life.
Good to hear all your car registration, license and "formal" address is in order. Will you need to change your insurer since your no longer a CA resident? I would think that would be part of it. Best of luck!
Any interesting places to do part time jobs over SD? That's kind of funny, you left San DIego (SD) and now you are in South Dakota (SD)! Good luck, I have subscribed for a while now, love your minimalist setup in that van, very appealing, but I would like to do with a built in shower and toilet, everything else looks perfect.
good the license, registration etc is taken care if. NY dmv is kinda like CA. the dog is super cute. no interview with your friend? the campground is really nice
As life long South Dakotans my wife and I are perplexed as to why you’d choose South Dakota for your official place of residence but I guess I get it. I can see the appeal have I not been here for the past 33 years.
Congrats! It's 'bout time! Good to get that off the to-do list. Any other advantages (besides the vehicle resp) to having SD as your resident state, i.e. tax or healthcare insurance, etc.??
Interesting how easy it was for you to establish South Dakota residency. Do they have State Income Taxes or Personal Property Taxes that you have to pay annually?
How do you handle health insurance? My NJ drivers license and registration will expire in the coming year, if I renew my lic & reg in another state, I'll lose the health insurance. Any ideas? Thanks
That requirement about coming back and residing in the state for real after you finish traveling sounds a bit sketchy. I know you said that you can travel indefinitely but that's not likely for most folks. Is there some sort of penalty if you do decide to take up residency in another state after you finish traveling? Also, how would they know if you're no longer traveling?
From the little bit that I have researched on this, I believe it is a Federal requirement for a legal domicile that you must INTEND to establish a permanent resident someday. So domicile: you intend to set up a residence there someday and resident: you would actually live there most of the time.
I can tell you New York (city) DMV is probably one of the worst and time consuming entities in history. You would most likely have to set aside 2-3 full business days to get anything done. It's horrible!
Nevada is fairly easy, no written or driving test, also no state income tax. Don't pick an address in Clark (Vegas) or Washoe (Reno) county. Both require yearly emissions testing.
+Phantom Rider I really dont want to share my insurance provider, thats a bit to much info for the public. It is a major nationwide company. My rates did not change much with the change of residency. 😄👍✌
I have heard that insurance rates can vary depending on the zip code, so my curiosity was the different state. Thanks for the reply and making informative videos. ✌️
sweet getting your SD residency! And don't forget to pay a sincere tribute to your san diegan culture that brought you this far. stay connected to your past. weave an amazing now by scooping the creme off the top of your kick ass so cal ways and mixing it in with your new adventures.
Is your mail forwarding address also in South Dakota? Mine is in Texas. Where I e lived for 40+ years. But I don't want to have to return every year for my inspection and tags. So I'm guessing I would have to switch mail forwarding services to a SD address? Are there other states that don't require inspections every year?
There is more to your vote than the presidential election. Your local elections are more important on a daily basis than national. The people running locally are your neighbors. I am speaking of county boards, city council members, state reps, etc. If you don't vote, don't complain about it. You are not a part of the process.
CT does as well and I just payed $250 for this year's property tax on a 12 year old Wrangler. People's Republic of Connecticut. And they want to put in 102 tolls across the state - we currently have no tolls. It's a 90 mile state.
I certainly appreciate the way you show van life can be done and still maintain your "law abiding citizen" status.
I could sure tell the excitement and relief you felt after finalizing your residency. Truly happy for you! 👍🏼

Thanks for the morning chuckle! I'm sure you're not exaggerating, I think that's what makes your comment so funny! Keep smiling, Valerie
I wish I were kidding. No exaggeration at all. It's a nightmare :-)
In Las Vegas, the line is around the block and people bring their lunches and sit on coolers.
In Maryland, at the DMV, with lines out the door and zig zagging thru the interior lobby, some one will eventually come out and say in a loud voice, "Anyone not here for a handicap parking permit, go to window #___."

Nice dinosaur. Beautiful scenery. Love Bard.
Bard looks like a great traveling companion !
How exciting!!! I bet it feels great to have it all finished up getting your residency process complete!! I hope there's a follow up video on Bard!!! Thanks

What a cute dog!
Very helpful and entertaining! 20years ago I had a tennis ball addicted Pit Bull dog, Bard is her kindred spirit.
You keep getting me fixing your breakfast, bro! hahahah. Now I'm hungry. Seriously, keep up the good work. You are rapidly becoming my favorite UA-camr in this category.:

Woo hoo, congratulations Brian on your license!!! 👏Wish you always happy travels. Great video. 👍😉💓😄🚐

Very Cute and *Special* doggie! :) Enjoy! :)
How does mail forwarding work? Great video!
Wish all DMV'S were that fast.
Hey I live there
Good to see you having a meet up with friends :) May the road be easy!
I'm not fond of RV parks either but that last camp ground was beautiful.
Congrats on South Dakota Residency!
Bard is SO cute!

I really enjoyed this video. Woof-Woof to Bard!
Another excellent video Brian. Thanks for sharing.
Great videos! I still think that body style was one of Dodge's best. Fond memories of driving a 15 passenger back in 2000.
Well, congratulations on getting all of the legal stuff done!! Cute dog!
Welcome to Rapid City!
Adventure Man! Man! Man! Vaaaaann!
Beautiful view
Congradulations and thanks for sharing how you did that!
Congratulations on the residency. Even though it cost you 48.00 bucks it saves you a ton compared to California.
Interesting. Thanks!
Always Love Your Videos!!
good the license, registration etc is taken care if. NY dmv is kinda like CA. the dog is super cute. no interview with your friend? the campground is really nice
wow that's cool
Safe travel's!!
another great vid !

I live in rural Kansas. I walk into any govt entity and I am the only one there. No waiting. You guys need to get out of the city!
Man I should do this just to not have the pain of smogging my car every couple of years it's such a racket out here in California! !
Renewed every two years?Mine for lifetime motorcycle, light and heavy vehicles
Interesting how easy it was for you to establish South Dakota residency. Do they have State Income Taxes or Personal Property Taxes that you have to pay annually?
Nice video and beautiful area! Why South Dakota over the other states for your license?
+Kurt M. Thanks Kurt !
now you have to start saying; Dontcha know.
that's Minnesota
Ya Sure, You Betcha, That's Minnesotan.
Fargo?? the movie.
+IB Watching that's North Dakota
All my SD friends say Innit..As in "Nice day Innit?" hah
What kind of camera are you using?
Did you choose SD for the $28 annual lic fee?
What did the plates cost for the camper van?
Question: Where did you buy the Reflectix with the black back?
I spray painted the reflectix on the back side.
Do you have any trouble with it cracking and chipping off at all? What kind of paint did you use? Thanks.
since u have SD plates will u have to smog your van
The reason he got residency in SD was to get away from having to smog test. So no.
How do you handle health insurance? My NJ drivers license and registration will expire in the coming year, if I renew my lic & reg in another state, I'll lose the health insurance. Any ideas? Thanks
do these campgrounds stay open during winter?
No, many close after Labor Day. Others stay open as long as the weather holds... until late October at the very latest.
Why did you get a drivers license in SD?
Did you have to retake the drivers exam all over again ?
+David Linville no just eye exam👍
I got ya. Dude you are awesome, keep living the Dream my Friend!!

+Che M. Yes, it is a very loose policy. No penalties or catches.
From the little bit that I have researched on this, I believe it is a Federal requirement for a legal domicile that you must INTEND to establish a permanent resident someday. So domicile: you intend to set up a residence there someday and resident: you would actually live there most of the time.
So....Sorry, I don't know....but what is the advantage of a South Dakota residency?
Much lower fees for license, registration, etc., no state income tax, very low sales tax. Fast!
And no smog test like in CA
Oh! Well worth the trip! Thanks RVers!
do you know of other states that offer something similar in regards to getting residency like you did
I can tell you New York (city) DMV is probably one of the worst and time consuming entities in history. You would most likely have to set aside 2-3 full business days to get anything done. It's horrible!
I've heard Nevada has similar benifits.
+dilbot macguillacutty lol Florida is pretty bad too. thanks for the response
NJ also!
Nevada is fairly easy, no written or driving test, also no state income tax. Don't pick an address in Clark (Vegas) or Washoe (Reno) county. Both require yearly emissions testing.
Brian, can you tell us who you have vehicle insurance with? Did the cost of insurance go down since you changed residency to SD?
WHat he said^
+Phantom Rider I really dont want to share my insurance provider, thats a bit to much info for the public. It is a major nationwide company. My rates did not change much with the change of residency. 😄👍✌
I have heard that insurance rates can vary depending on the zip code, so my curiosity was the different state. Thanks for the reply and making informative videos. ✌️
+Phantom Rider
Florida has the cheapest insurance rates of all.
I was wondering about the full time aspect of insurance also and you are right insurance companies will do anything to not pay. They are the devil lol
sweet getting your SD residency! And don't forget to pay a sincere tribute to your san diegan culture that brought you this far. stay connected to your past. weave an amazing now by scooping the creme off the top of your kick ass so cal ways and mixing it in with your new adventures.
Why the SD residency?
He doesn't have to go back every year to get an emissions test or inspection done.
Oh right. That would be a hassle.
Yes, mail forwarding service must be in South Dakota :)
+AdventureVanMan good to know :)
Iowa
Vagabond Mango what inspection in Texas?
Maybe I missed it in the comments, but what is the address that they put on your license?
My mail forwarding service mailbox👍
Does that look like a PO Box address, or like an apartment address?
That's so easy compared to California
Voters registration?
Why would you vote for another human to rule you? So funny. Voting hahaha
There is more to your vote than the presidential election. Your local elections are more important on a daily basis than national. The people running locally are your neighbors. I am speaking of county boards, city council members, state reps, etc. If you don't vote, don't complain about it. You are not a part of the process.
+justin dahl it's not like we have any decent choices that are all here now!
But without government who would enslave 7 billion people? Nice logic. Govern-mental. You're voting for actors on a TV show. So funny.
At least it's logic.
No more communist California smog test..
CT does as well and I just payed $250 for this year's property tax on a 12 year old Wrangler. People's Republic of Connecticut. And they want to put in 102 tolls across the state - we currently have no tolls. It's a 90 mile state.
