    I bought a XR650R in 2004 with 50 miles on it and put in storage until last month. Never used it for Adventure riding I bought it for. Now I have a friend that wants to so I'm getting it ready to do a section of the trans continental trail. Through Colorado to the Oregon coast. Need to take the road/freeway to start the loop from Los Angeles. I bought an extra rear subframe to beef up with extra tubing to support the camping bear and still hit the whoops at speed. Heavier springs and Baja Design LED headlight, Had them also wind the stator from stock 80 watt to two 125 watt circuits. Rebuild kit for carb, 5 gal. IMS fuel tank, new tires. It was California plated in 2003 by the original owner who bought a bunch of them to do baja mexico tours.Problem for them was Honda just came out with the CRF450 and it had electric start and they had to use them instead to keep in buisness. Also replaced the fork/shock seals.

      @@OldDirtBikes Well I'm here in Los Angeles so I have a bunch of mountain ranges up to 2,500 meters and the Mojave desert (high desert) and low desert by San Diego ca. I have 2 stroke and 4 stroke KTM dirt bikes for day rides and camping out of Van. I'm getting the XR650R running to do Adventure riding so it is plated for road use but want to stay on dirt roads mostly with all the camping gear that goes with being on the trail for a few weeks at a time. Never done it so it will be an adventure.
      I've only posted one youtube, here it is from a trail out of Lake Isabella, California. That was a 2 day event with roll charts for guidance. We did that ride every year for many years. We would rent out a camp site and people from all over would sign up. Maybe 50 riders. It was a blast.

      @@OldDirtBikes Hey Phillip, So glad to hear the tank cleaned up well, can't wait to see it! Kind of fun that the bike has parts on it from many different bikes and places with the RADs coming from the UK I think you said. Tell your wife thank you from us watching for doing great camera work!

    Using a small screwdriver you can carefully straighten the thin 'foil' like fins that get bent/blocked. Doesn't make the cooling any better in my experience but looks better..

    Looking very nice! I've recently purchased a 2000 model and redoing it. Mine won't be to the level of yours. Just a decent looking daily rider for me.

    Super glue bicarbonate/soda powder and water will fix them roads... put superglue on the area that's leaking sprinkle the bicarbonate and soda powder over the super glue and repeat then spray with water .. it will set like concrete or you can buy a similar product from a car acesorie shop that uses super glue and a grey or black powder for metal and plastic .. I have the stuff up the garage , if I get up there later I'll tell you what the product is. It's works well as does the superglue and bicarbonate powder does aswel. There's a place in Pontypridd that should be able to repair the rads aswel ...👍

      Thanks. Yes over budget and late 😀but im happy how it turned out . Its the wheels that threw the budget. The true test will be end of this month when i take it for a proper ride as I’ve never ridden it further than my garden 🥺. Dont know how the engine will turn out , done compression test and checked valves and rebuild carb . I dont take engines appart unless I really have to . There has been small amount of blue smoke 💨 with it but i did coat the barrel and carb with 2 stroke oil to preserve as i new it was going to be used for long time . Maybe that should have burned off by now few laps of the garden ? We’ll find out soon 👍👍👍

      @losttheplotcolin 2 роки тому +1

      @@OldDirtBikes maybe the valve stem oil seals are leaking a little.
      As long as you don't have to add oil between oil changes should be alright if the compression is good.

      Hi thank you it’s turned out really good its one of my better builds not quite like new but close . If i was going to use it a lot of tight places or low speed trails i would put a fan on but for what i do it wont need it 👍👍
