    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Ash (Ian Holm) tries to sever the alien off Kane (John Hurt), the blood that gushes out burns a hole in the ship.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
"In space, no one can hear you scream." A close encounter of the third kind becomes a Jaws-style nightmare when an alien invades a spacecraft in Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror classic. On the way home from a mission for the Company, the Nostromo's crew is woken up from hibernation by the ship's Mother computer to answer a distress signal from a nearby planet. Capt. Dallas's (Tom Skerritt) rescue team discovers a bizarre pod field, but things get even stranger when a face-hugging creature bursts out of a pod and attaches itself to Kane (John Hurt). Over the objections of Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), science officer Ash (Ian Holm) lets Kane back on the ship. The acid-blooded incubus detaches itself from an apparently recovered Kane, but an alien erupts from Kane's stomach and escapes. The alien starts stalking the humans, pitting Dallas and his crew (and cat) against a malevolent killing machine that also has a protector in the nefarious Company.

The Facehugger being revealed for the first time has to be the most horrific moment of the entire film. Incredible effort to make the thing look so real and organic. I think this is a great scene, but it would get cut to hell in a modern film. And I think that's the problem these days, movies have to go so many places that they end up cutting out things like this. That's what I like about old films, there's scenes of people walking from one place to another, and looking at things for a while. I think it really helps with the immersion.

You also might notice movies before 1990's used to have the camera on people's faces more often. Dialogue. Take for instance the Star Wars movies. Episodes 4, 5 and 6. Lots of close ups, lots of emotions. Then the first three came out and all you get is tons of massive CGI battles, flashy effects and little to no real immersion in the storyline. Ruined the whole franchise. And that was BEFORE Disney took over.

True. Modern audiences are just way too rushed, so are the movies. I can feel that when I watch a "slow" movie with someone else younger, or even at my age (I'm not really old). If a movie drags too much in one scene, they start to yawn. If that happens too many times, they literally can't stand still on their chairs in agony! Unbelievable.

@@prince-solomon I'd say the super clean ones are unrealistic. To have super cleaned ones, either the station/space ship has to be new or well maintained.
Well maintained means either the surface is self cleaning somehow or that there are people or robots that constantly clean the floor, the walls and the ceiling.
This style from alien movie is more of a seasoned spaceship which is far more realistic.

I love how they build up the atmosphere in this movie. It's not about the story, or the backstory. It's not about the monster so much even. It's about the crew, we are just hanging with them, in their normal day. And we later see how they treat the problematic situation and how the horror of the situation reflect on them. It's about the characters. Many horror movies seems to not get it. The Thing movie get it. Blair Witch Project get it. It's one of the things that are not so well done in the Prometheus from what I remember. There was lot of exposition, lot of backstory, lot of unnecessary stuff that won't help you if the characters aren't credible. It was classic cliché slasher movie. First Alien is more like an observation.

Just look at the practical effects in this. They look real, like this could actually be happening. In Covenant there was some good CG, but the digital effects for the Alien weren't as good. This movie shows how hard work turns practical effects into something just as good as today's special effects. Good job, Ridley Scott!

However, the chance that aliens would have any physical similarities to humans is incredibly minute when compared to the chance of them having no physical similarities, due to our understanding of the size of the universe.

I love all the overthinking in the comments of this scene. The main reason for the the creature to have acid for blood was so that when they hunt the creature that bursts out of Hurt they can't simply shoot it because they risk a hull breach. This adds to the hopelessness of their situation reinforcing the claustrophobic conditions they exist in and this adds to the overall mystery of the unknown with this creature.

    • @odiemodie1

    • @themurphy1245
      @themurphy1245 5 років тому +19

Ronin Dave Actually you’re the first overthinking. The reason was simply because it was original and cool to have an alien/creature with these features.
No need to try finding the “big motivation” for everything.
They had electric prods and flamethrowers to deal with the Alien without splashing the blood everywhere. Flushing it out into space was simply the safest option.

I feel like the strength of the acid blood varies greatly and is only as powerful as the plot wants it to be for that specific scene

I love this film. It’s one of my favourites of all time. It’s surprising that the blood from the facehugger can melt through two decks. I’ve never seen anything like it. I didn’t think that it would be that dangerous. After I saw it first time, I thought to myself WTF?

Alien and The Thing (1982) are the 2 best sci fi horror movies ever. Maybe the OG predator as well.

For anyone interested in props. This is the linea aluminium pencil made by Parafernalia in Italy. Expensive but very collectible.

Maybe if Weyland-Yutani didn't make their ship's floor from styrofoam the acid wouldn't dissolve it so quickly...

Best sci fi all time. I’d add the thing and a few other B type films like leviathan and deep star six.
