Mike, I’m 79 and grew up on a 200 acre farm in Virginia in the fifties and sixties. Dad had a job in town. We had about 10-12 cows, 2-4 pigs, a couple of dozen hens. Our cows were some dairy and some beef. Now for the life owning cows: we never took a vacation. It’s a 365 day job per year. None of our neighbors took vacations either. This life style of the smaller farmer was a life time commitment. Dad took care of the animals in the AM before work, and I took care of them after school. Guess what, no sports - no regrets. Also, my maternal grandmother lived with us (no nursing homes), she churned butter, helped with cooking and dressing a chicken. So, it’s a life changing commitment to have cows. Don’t forget haying, gardens and crops. WE HAD FUN
As a cattlemen myself I really enjoyed watching this. You have a great way of presenting things and bringing a little humor along as well Mike. I hope to grow into as good a farmer and UA-camr as yourself. Thanks for these videos yall make.
three minutes in and I already love this one!!! Thanks for all the superior content that you create. This has helped me more than you will ever know as a producer in Arkansas
I LOVE THE WAY YOU TEACH SO OTHERS CAN LEARN FASTER. IM NO FARMER BUT LOVE COWS, MY HUBBY LIVED ON A FARM NOTHING LIKE YOURS, JUST A SMALL FAMILY FARM. STILL HARD WORK HAD TO RAISE THERE OWN FOOD, ACRES OF CORN NOT MUCH FARM MACHINERY BACK THAN, in 40’s HAD NO ELECTRICITY.I LOVE LEARNING HERE I AM ALMOST 84 yrs. OLD WILL NEVER USE IT BUT STILL INTERESTING 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I loved this video. As someone who put their hands on a cow for the first time the day a pair of calves were dropped off at my place 4 years ago this was great. I could probably write a book about everything I didn't know but had to find out the hard way. The two pieces of advice I would give to folks starting out is find someone around you that you can pepper with questions, and I would start out with calves that have been weined. We started with bottle calves this year and that is a WHOLE different experience.
I live in the uk ( England ) and as a young lad I was camping out with friends in a back garden. I remember this well. One guy said and I quote I heard that If you prod a cow when they sleep they tip over. Living in a village in England that was mostly made up of farms with sheep and cattle, nobody ever plucked up the courage to go test out this theory even at 3am, we had cows in fields everywhere. The guy who said it was being honest at the time but looking back it was quite funny. Someone got a laugh out of it somewhere. Telling teens that this was a thing.
Believe it if not, this video was one of the best and most informative on any subject I’ve watched this year. Thanks for spending the time to educate all of us on what “life’s” really about. I love your channel.
I am a lot like you. I have gone from RN to cattle rancher just 2 months ago. The only difference is that I have some experience, but I’m not an expert & my uncle lets me know that every day. But I’m learning & I’m loving it.
Great advice! Well presented. Wish I had known this when I started 13 years ago. Long story short, I've made a lot of mistakes, been blessed with inspired solutions after lots of prayers followed by too many miracles to count. Still have 3 cows and 2 bulls. I sold 2/3 of my herd last fall as I had to have my knees replaced and I run the small homestead solo. Before I sold them, my daughter and her family traveled 2000 miles to help. My bulls are naturally poled, but All my cows have horns. She couldn't understand why I wanted so many bulls and only 2 cows. Apparently there is a rumor out there that only bulls have horns.
My mother grew up on a farm in poland 🇵🇱 and I remember being a kid playing in the barn and the stable.. one time I even fell into the pond and my grampa told me I swallowed a frog. Those where the good times.... thank you Mike for bringing the real life back.
Cool video ! I have ben around Cows N horses And hogs all my life & It Seams like i learn something new from them every week or day even ! i was born & raised on a small farm 75--80 acres (3rd gen) The biggest hog heard i can remember was about 350 head years and years ago then the bottom fell out of the market ! i help manage another larger farm now days with about 100-150 head of cows & i learned years ago no one does it for the money ..ya do it because you love the animals, land & just the way of life ! an really who ever saw and dont love to see a calf being born..its still like magic to me almost 40 years latter!
Had a pair of family cows over 16 years. Sold one because only needed one ? Lots of work but lots of benifits. They where Irish Dexters. We took our gals too the bull.
I have to thank you.i am Canadian so I obviously can't order beef from you. however I did find a local beef rancher near me.i now buy my beef from them. Thanks to you and your family I realize how important it is to support farmers, ranchers.
Very nice Watching from Coopersville Michigan. Looked up the AIR BNB on the farm. For sure wanting to visit this ranch with my wife and kids. Very amazing content love every video.
Nice job Mike! Couldn't have said better myself. Having at one time or another in having Dairy cows which is what I have now but I have beef cows too and also hogs and even some sheep it's all watching the animals. My dad used to get nervous when we were milking and said there s nobody sick or have mastitis. Somethings going to blow up. Good day!
So. .... did the chicken win? You can't keep this kind of vital information from us. Was the chicken fighting the pig? Did the chicken get pork chopped? Was it an eggciting fight?
Just got done wit dinner and... look its Mike & the Cows! Thanks for the video and for the break from eating dinner to washing the dishes. Contented Organic Wonders - COWS(tm).
2 dairy calves here, first time cow owners. They are going on 5 weeks old. Getting ready to pick up a dairy bull calf for future breeding. We've had dairy goats, chickens, and horses before though.. But haven't had farm animals for a good 5 years. Thanks for the video...I thought I had already subscribed but the button was available so I subscribed again.
When we were on the farm, we gave our cows grain when they were close to calving which seamed to held them a lot. Thanks Mike for all this information always learning something from you in Wyoming
I started two years ago and I now have seven Bulls. I haven't needed all 10 on your list but definitely five. Keep going there's got to be at least two dozen more of things that I've learned and that you need to list
Enjoyed the video, as the herd I help calve is ready to start, it is fun to see someone else in the business and what you have say. Thanks for the break
Hey Mike, I love the way you explain things you are very thorough and the average person understands what you are saying. I understand the the whole farming method because my mother grew up on a farm with 7 brothers and sisters. And everyone had a job granddaddy would butcher the pigs and put them in a Smokehouse and everyone else would take care of the livestock so I understand where my food comes from. Mike you have so much knowledge I love the way you pass it on to others so what's next for OWL keep up the good work and see you in the next video🤠🐂👍
Good video, Mike. Such a welcome addition to my isolation. Both your planned teaching vlogs or your live on the fly day to day activities, I’m never disappointed. Looking forward to the 30 in 30. God bless.
Another great educational video, Mike. People need to earn where their food comes from and the American producer that grows it. You and Erin are the best at that. Thanks. Now I have to feed the cows.
Your videos are very informative , thank you, you and Erin have done a wonderful job. Best wishes to you, your family, and all the livestock at your ranch
I really enjoyed this video, considering i and my husband don't plan on having a farm or a ranch in the near or far future. We don't have the money or transportation > meaning we can't drive. Watching this is very interesting and fascinating. Even though, we don't plan on having a farm or a ranch. I learned something more about cows, that I didn't know or forgotten; that cows kill more humans than sharks do.
Thank you for making this video. I’ve had bottle calves since May. I wish there was a video out there that told you absolutely everything to do. I am subscribed to you and I enjoy your videos. Honestly, and I think most people are like this, but honestly, I am so busy and really have way too much burden. Your videos move along slowly and, I, for one I’m looking to get lots of information quickly. Maybe you could separate informational videos from videos of pleasure or enjoyment, Because you sure have information to share and you also are a pleasure to watch. I would like to watch informational videos for content and entertainment videos for pleasure when I have time.
My father never raised dairy cattle the only raised short horn Hereford cross and we used to milk them or they had nice rich milk and lots of it and lots of cream made her own butter
So even though I'll never be in a spot to raise cattle.....i found this video and WELL ALL THESE VIDEOS very informative and entertaining. I really wish I was in better Phisicle shape. Your life sounds great... A lot of WORK BUT GREAT
