Yep Jose. I come from a long line of ranchers. And I am 50 years old now and been doing it my whole life, A lot of times I’ll roll my eyes and shake my head at some of the things he does and thought about commenting on some of his actions sometimes, but then I take a deep breath and realize just what you said he has never done it before came from the radio industry and jumped in with both feet. One day he was a desk man, The next day he was a rancher. And one other thing you failed to mention, he doesn’t mind putting all of his life out there on video for everyone to dissect and tell him what he’s doing wrong and what he’s doing right. I say way to go.
Mike one thing 21 yrs in the fire service taught me was that you can't save everyone, that only god can do that. So we try and we have to really take our wins and hold on to them. It makes a huge difference when someone or something comes two you and thanks you for saving them or a family member. To this day I cry with joy every time I think of this story. I was a young firefighter, first responder. I was on my way home entering our neighboring departments area when a call came out for a accidentally shooting the results of a ricochet. At first I wasn't going to respond but at the last minute I seen the first responding officers. I decided to fallow them in when they cleared the scene for us to respond to scene I got out and walked in. As I walked up putting my gloves on I noticed the deputies walking around the victim asking questions. I said freeze do not move your head to the victim and asked the deputies to please step in front of him to ask questions. That was a request I had to ask on several times till the ambulance arrived and we loaded the victim up. When the ambulance left the deputies asked why I had said that. I asked them if they had noticed a fragment of the round that was just above the Carotid artery. They had not. 2 and a half years later they had found me at my station during a open house. His son was approximately 8 at the time came running up to me and hugged my legs I reached down pickup the little boy as his father walked up while his little boy almost put me in a strange hold on my neck saying thank you the intire time. He asked me if I remember him just as I was recognizing the scars from that incident over 2 years before. To this day I think about that little boy or try to every time I am having a bad day. It makes me smile and helps me push forward. The father told me while he was at the hospital the surgeon told him if he would have turned his head that most likely he would have died within seconds. They wouldn't have been even able to save him if he would have done it in the Emergency room department. That one fragment was less than a mm from cutting the artery.
Mike I just now was able to get time to devote to watch this video. I graduated with an animal science major from the University of Tennessee. I know there are things that happen on a farm/ranch which a lot of people will not understand or accept as best practice. You made a quick decision based on your experience and that pond. You went the extra mile and tried to save that calf. It wasn't a defeat. It wasn't a defeat. You showed you can keep your cool in an emergency and your knowledge and experience gave you the confidence to act. Hang in there and kudos to you and Erin.

As an ER nurse, I am impressed with how you handled the situation! You’re assessment skills, knowledge, and experience led you to understand exactly what was happening and how to quickly respond! The rigid abdomen and white gums is exactly how medical professionals are trained as well. Performing a C-section immediately, was amazing to me and exactly what had to be done. I know the end result wasn’t what you hoped for, however, you did all you could do to attempt to save a calf. Doing nothing would have ended the same way but left you stuck pondering the “ What IF’s!” I know many have different opinions and will never understand but I think you made a great call and I’m super impressed! I found your channel recently on July 1st after my daughter and her boyfriend brought home a nearly dead abandoned twin. Thanks to your videos, I gained the knowledge to nurse her back to health against all odds. We now have 2 mastitis calves as well! So far all 3 are thriving! Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your knowledge with a very, very unprofessional and unskilled bottle mom from Georgia! Most said, “ they will die!” You gave us hope and the skills to say, “ Well, we will try!”
For those who don't understand how much ranchers are vested in their livestock, crops, or us the people, don't know ranchers and farmers. Every animal is important financially but almost as important psychologically. I commend you for what you do.
I agree exactly, I know how much it hurt Mike and Erin to show what happened and to show that calf but people should see that know and then as people think farmers and ranchers are Rich cuz they drive fancy trucks and tractors and cars and combines but nowadays you have to be ontop of things and ready to go when things are ready. I feel bad for Mike and Erin for all they put into that cow like feeding for 9 months and vaccination and got nothing back and still lost the cow. I can relate I use to be a hiredman and I treated my life and job as if they the animals were mine and I walked into the harrowing house the next morning after a winter storm and there were 5 dead sows and the pigs were newborn babies and some were couple days old we didn't know how they died. I hope you may get some twins Mike and Erin to make up partially for what you lost and that the rest of your calving season ends in a positive way
Mike thank you for not acting like nothing ever happened. It's beneficial for people that aren't familiar with farm life and the trials & tribulations that happen to see it all. Then maybe they can have a better understanding as to what we farmers go through or maybe a better appreciation of the sacrifices we make to feed not only our own families but everyone else's as well. We can all take a step back & say "shoulda woulda coulda" but in the end it won't change a thing. Thank you for this vlog especially. It shows real life. I'm truly sorry that you lost both momma & baby.

This might have been the most important video you have ever made, Mike. As a part of knowing where our food comes from and how it is raised, we need to see the blood, sweat, and yes TEARS that go into the food we eat. And you are right. Optimists make it. Pessimists usually don’t. I doubt many tears are invested in manufactured food.
My father was an experimental farmer for Birdseye for 40 years. I can tell you there were plenty tears involved. I was picking berries with my siblings, ages 4, 6, 7 and 8, when I was 2 on the experimental farm. All of us children helped dad move irrigation pipe in the middle of the night, too. Before there were cabs in tractors dad spent hours on one. When different pollination combos needed to be tried dad got stung many times, too, swelling up. He was a red head so sunburned easily. On those long hot days in the field there was no shade. When dad flew out of state it always made him ill. When he worked out of the country he missed weddings, birthdays, babies' births and holidays. The tears are different, but I can assure you, they were and still are there.
I honestly think of these things that you speak of all the time; my family were ranchers in the Napa Valley from the late 1800’s to the 1980’s and since I spent time at the ranch, my eyes were opened! I suppose that is why I thank the Lord and I respect the world that He created.
“Sometimes I feel bad unloading on you in these VLOGS”. You have no idea how beneficial this daily cycle has positively impacted your regular viewers, the image of the larger ranching/farming community and all the others who have started paying attention to the food production process. What you do is beyond important and sharing it with the world exponentially magnifies that impact. You are an optimist, you have to be, it’s why you’re where you are.
Completely agree. These videos have given me a sense of normalcy in the middle of chaos. I have known for the past month that each night when I get home from work there is a new video from Mike and Erin in Wyoming. It distracts me if I had a bad day while still showing real life. Mike, I am sorry for your loss. I can not imagine what you are going through. But thanks for not acting like nothing happened. I appreciate the honesty. Also thanks for the videos. Wow, that was an emotional ride. It brought back a memory when I was at a friend's dairy during a difficult calving, the momma cow hemmoraged and died and the calf didn't make it either. We sat with our backs against the wall in the manger sobbing. It was so awful! My heart breaks for farmers and ranchers when these things happen. It's never easy. Thank you for showing the realities of farm life. I pray for a successful calving season for you!
Going forward how do you hope to sort this problem that it wont happen again its important to learn from these bad days. We have a saying in Ireland "Once its outside the door of the house".

You’re just trying to show whomever you were arguing with that all ranchers aren’t evil, murderous brutes who only sees green when they look at a cow. I’ve encountered really mean vegans/vegetarians like that....like they think bullying will make anyone listen to their opinions. I dare ANYONE to watch....hell 3-4 videos of Mike’s & Erin’s and say they don’t truly care about these animals!!!
Your neighbor was awesome. Saw the situation, no doubt has been there himself and knew the odds. And being a rancher and an optimist, he thought maybe a little extra help right now might improve the odds. So he stepped up and helped. And Erin came running with colostrum and she helped. You did all that could be done. The cow bled out internally, no way to stop that it was already too far gone when you found her. If you had seen her fall it would have been too late to save her. And the calf - even the vet said she had almost no chance - and you gave her that chance. If it helps to know, I cried for them both, and then for the helpers. Thanks for trying - it was a heartfelt battle.
As a former vet tech for a mixed vet firm Ive seen enough cases just like yours and the one thing that always amazed me is the farmers and ranchers resilience ! I commend you on how you handled that hope tomorrow brings much better things. Thank God tomorrow is another day.

There’s nothing disturbing about that, your warning should’ve just said caution life is going to happen and if life disturbs you, you might look away Been working with cattle my whole life it’s something you do just like a woman going in the hospital she may have a natural birth or she may have a C-section, the only difference is we are the doctors in 90% of the cases.
This is a part of life that not a whole lot of people get to see. I grew up on a small farm, had some cows, hogs, and chickens. We learned at an early age about life, death and the cycle of life. God bless and stay safe...

I was a bit under the weather yesterday and watched the live camera stream off and on all day from bed. At one point I noticed the Gator by the pond then it high tailing it back toward the barn. A little later I realized that the Tractor was by the pond and it looked like something was on the forks being moved. I hoped what was happening was not what I now know happened. So sorry for the loss of the cow and calf. Those of us that love all living things feel your pain. Thank you for all you do and showing both the beautiful and dark side of ranching.
You can't beat YOU'RE self up. It's part of ranch life. Two years ago we had 2 c-sections & lost a mom & baby. When this happens makes you wonder if it's all worth it. Ultimately it is. Hang in there.

That was an emotional roller coaster....Ranches/farms are where life and death meet on almost a daily basis. It takes special people to take on the task of feeding America while dealing with the realities of ranching. When you care about your animals it makes it even tougher but you and Erin are both very special people. You mentioned taking some time off after the calving live stream. We all will understand that and I hope you take a week or longer. You all have made our lives much easier dealing with covid19 but your challenges do not end. I heard a doctor say once ‘I did nothing differently - the patient was in good stead and yet they died. Sometimes I wonder if I am truly doing anything to keep them alive or if there is a higher force’. It made me think about life and death when he said that. Mike brother. You know this. There are some that are just not meant to live. I also know that don't help. We raise sheep I loose lambs, it always sucks and I always take it hard. But when I see all them lambs that make it, it makes it all worth it. Thanks for sharing this, I think people need to see that we really do care for our animals and it is not just a business for most farmers and ranchers. Those animals are our babies and we do all we can for them. Focus on the wins
Thank you Mike that was a true showing of what it was really like when I was cowboying in Montana and South Dakota many day and sleepless night where spent fighting for the lives of animals and some wins and some losses. Losses are never easy. As a young lad when I got my first animals in junior high and lost my first I asked my Grandpa what I did wrong. He ask questions and talk me through the situation. In the end he said I had giving my all and that was all anyone could do. Then he said that the only way to not lose animals is never have animals. You have to have animals to lose any. I would have to decide if I was willing to lose any or just not have any. What you have been doing is a wonderful thing showing the world the truth of what livestock producers go threw. I'm a new subscriber to your channel and just watching the first few videos that I have, I can sure see that you run a tight ship! Your ranch is beautiful! As a child I loved growing up around farm lands. Birthday party's and large friends and family gatherings always being held in our neighbors barns!Seeing all the animals and the freedom we had as children was amazing! Many years later I find myself married, 3 Adult children and 5 Grandchildren living in a City. I never ever thought I would move from the country and the lifestyle it offers. I miss it horribly. Watching your videos gives me a glimpse back to those good old days! Thank you for sharing your ranch and videos with all of us. I'm so looking forward to following along and having some great memories! It's not an easy life by no means. It's alot of hard work but it's so worth the freedom! My Grandad ranched his whole life. He is a man of few words but when he speaks it is with profound wisdom. He also has a heart bigger than many would ever believe an old cowboy would. I believe the wisdom and heart came from the many days like the one you just showed. Love the channel reminds me of my childhood riding around with my grandad.
Well the whole thing was heartbreaking! But that's life on the ranch! You guys all did what you could! The way you all handled it was amazing, their #'s were up! We are not in total control but, you did what you could and, now life must go on. I hate how some people say farmers are cruel when, it's the total opposite!
Sorry for your loss, Mike. People don’t realize how hard these things are on the rancher. We always second guess and wonder what we could have done differently and sometimes you have to just accept that there is nothing more you could have done. We recently lost a good cow unexpectedly and I know how hard it is. Thinking of you guys- keep your chin up and keep moving forward!

I can not express how wonderful your family has made my time at home a normal day. We have loved getting to see what life is like for a real farm. The information you have brought to our family has been nothing but a blessing. We have sheep and chickens. My grandson gets up everyday to see all the cows. Thank you for all the hard work. My God continue to bless all that your family does to inform us of life, death and the endurance to fight for our way of life.

In my honest unsolicited opinion I think more of this kind of thing needs to be shared with the world to bring the uninformed closer to reality. It makes me smile and helps me push forward. The father told me while he was at the hospital the surgeon told him if he would have turned his head that most likely he would have died within seconds. They wouldn't have been even able to save him if he would have done it in the Emergency room department. That one fragment was less than a mm from cutting the artery.
Mike I just now was able to get time to devote to watch this video. I graduated with an animal science major from the University of Tennessee. I know there are things that happen on a farm/ranch which a lot of people will not understand or accept as best practice. You made a quick decision based on your experience and that pond. You went the extra mile and tried to save that calf. It wasn't a defeat. It wasn't a defeat. You showed you can keep your cool in an emergency and your knowledge and experience gave you the confidence to act. Hang in there and kudos to you and Erin.

As an ER nurse, I am impressed with how you handled the situation! You’re assessment skills, knowledge, and experience led you to understand exactly what was happening and how to quickly respond! The rigid abdomen and white gums is exactly how medical professionals are trained as well. Performing a C-section immediately, was amazing to me and exactly what had to be done. I know the end result wasn’t what you hoped for, however, you did all you could do to attempt to save a calf. Doing nothing would have ended the same way but left you stuck pondering the “ What IF’s!” I know many have different opinions and will never understand but I think you made a great call and I’m super impressed! I found your channel recently on July 1st after my daughter and her boyfriend brought home a nearly dead abandoned twin. Thanks to your videos, I gained the knowledge to nurse her back to health against all odds. We now have 2 mastitis calves as well! So far all 3 are thriving! Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your knowledge with a very, very unprofessional and unskilled bottle mom from Georgia! Most said, “ they will die!” You gave us hope and the skills to say, “ Well, we will try!”
For those who don't understand how much ranchers are vested in their livestock, crops, or us the people, don't know ranchers and farmers. Every animal is important financially but almost as important psychologically. I commend you for what you do.

I agree exactly, I know how much it hurt Mike and Erin to show what happened and to show that calf but people should see that know and then as people think farmers and ranchers are Rich cuz they drive fancy trucks and tractors and cars and combines but nowadays you have to be ontop of things and ready to go when things are ready. I feel bad for Mike and Erin for all they put into that cow like feeding for 9 months and vaccination and got nothing back and still lost the cow.
I can relate I use to be a hiredman and I treated my life and job as if they the animals were mine and I walked into the harrowing house the next morning after a winter storm and there were 5 dead sows and the pigs were newborn babies and some were couple days old we didn't know how they died. I hope you may get some twins Mike and Erin to make up partially for what you lost and that the rest of your calving season ends in a positive way

Mike thank you for not acting like nothing ever happened. It's beneficial for people that aren't familiar with farm life and the trials & tribulations that happen to see it all. Then maybe they can have a better understanding as to what we farmers go through or maybe a better appreciation of the sacrifices we make to feed not only our own families but everyone else's as well.
We can all take a step back & say "shoulda woulda coulda" but in the end it won't change a thing.

This might have been the most important video you have ever made, Mike. As a part of knowing where our food comes from and how it is raised, we need to see the blood, sweat, and yes TEARS that go into the food we eat. And you are right. Optimists make it. Pessimists usually don’t. I doubt many tears are invested in manufactured food.
My father was an experimental farmer for Birdseye for 40 years. I can tell you there were plenty tears involved. I was picking berries with my siblings, ages 4, 6, 7 and 8, when I was 2 on the experimental farm. All of us children helped dad move irrigation pipe in the middle of the night, too. Before there were cabs in tractors dad spent hours on one. When different pollination combos needed to be tried dad got stung many times, too, swelling up. He was a red head so sunburned easily. On those long hot days in the field there was no shade. When dad flew out of state it always made him ill. When he worked out of the country he missed weddings, birthdays, babies' births and holidays. The tears are different, but I can assure you, they were and still are there.
I honestly think of these things that you speak of all the time; my family were ranchers in the Napa Valley from the late 1800’s to the 1980’s and since I spent time at the ranch, my eyes were opened! I suppose that is why I thank the Lord and I respect the world that He created.

You have no idea how beneficial this daily cycle has positively impacted your regular viewers, the image of the larger ranching/farming community and all the others who have started paying attention to the food production process. What you do is beyond important and sharing it with the world exponentially magnifies that impact. You are an optimist, you have to be, it’s why you’re where you are.
Completely agree. These videos have given me a sense of normalcy in the middle of chaos. I have known for the past month that each night when I get home from work there is a new video from Mike and Erin in Wyoming. It distracts me if I had a bad day while still showing real life.

Wow, that was an emotional ride. It brought back a memory when I was at a friend's dairy during a difficult calving, the momma cow hemmoraged and died and the calf didn't make it either. We sat with our backs against the wall in the manger sobbing. It was so awful! My heart breaks for farmers and ranchers when these things happen. It's never easy. Thank you for showing the realities of farm life. I pray for a successful calving season for you!

Your neighbor was awesome. Saw the situation, no doubt has been there himself and knew the odds. And being a rancher and an optimist, he thought maybe a little extra help right now might improve the odds. So he stepped up and helped. And Erin came running with colostrum and she helped. You did all that could be done. The cow bled out internally, no way to stop that it was already too far gone when you found her. If you had seen her fall it would have been too late to save her. And the calf - even the vet said she had almost no chance - and you gave her that chance. If it helps to know, I cried for them both, and then for the helpers. Thanks for trying - it was a heartfelt battle.

I was a bit under the weather yesterday and watched the live camera stream off and on all day from bed. At one point I noticed the Gator by the pond then it high tailing it back toward the barn. A little later I realized that the Tractor was by the pond and it looked like something was on the forks being moved. I hoped what was happening was not what I now know happened. So sorry for the loss of the cow and calf. Those of us that love all living things feel your pain. Thank you for all you do and showing both the beautiful and dark side of ranching.

That was an emotional roller coaster....Ranches/farms are where life and death meet on almost a daily basis. It takes special people to take on the task of feeding America while dealing with the realities of ranching. When you care about your animals it makes it even tougher but you and Erin are both very special people. You mentioned taking some time off after the calving live stream. We all will understand that and I hope you take a week or longer. You all have made our lives much easier dealing with covid19 but your challenges do not end. But when I see all them lambs that make it, it makes it all worth it. Thank you Mike that was a true showing of what it was really like when I was cowboying in Montana and South Dakota many day and sleepless night where spent fighting for the lives of animals and some wins and some losses. Losses are never easy. As a young lad when I got my first animals in junior high and lost my first I asked my Grandpa what I did wrong. He ask questions and talk me through the situation. In the end he said I had giving my all and that was all anyone could do. Then he said that the only way to not lose animals is never have animals. You have to have animals to lose any. I would have to decide if I was willing to lose any or just not have any. What you have been doing is a wonderful thing showing the world the truth of what livestock producers go threw. I'm a new subscriber to your channel and just watching the first few videos that I have, I can sure see that you run a tight ship! Your ranch is beautiful! As a child I loved growing up around farm lands. Birthday party's and large friends and family gatherings always being held in our neighbors barns!Seeing all the animals and the freedom we had as children was amazing! Many years later I find myself married, 3 Adult children and 5 Grandchildren living in a City. I never ever thought I would move from the country and the lifestyle it offers. I miss it horribly. Watching your videos gives me a glimpse back to those good old days! Thank you for sharing your ranch and videos with all of us. My Grandad ranched his whole life. He is a man of few words but when he speaks it is with profound wisdom. He also has a heart bigger than many would ever believe an old cowboy would. Well the whole thing was heartbreaking! But that's life on the ranch! You guys all did what you could! The way you all handled it was amazing, their #'s were up! We are not in total control but, you did what you could and, now life must go on. I hate how some people say farmers are cruel when, it's the total opposite!

We always second guess and wonder what we could have done differently and sometimes you have to just accept that there is nothing more you could have done. I can not express how wonderful your family has made my time at home a normal day. We have loved getting to see what life is like for a real farm. The information you have brought to our family has been nothing but a blessing. We have sheep and chickens. My grandson gets up everyday to see all the cows. Thank you for all the hard work. My God continue to bless all that your family does to inform us of life, death and the endurance to fight for our way of life.
