    Are BMWs really as expensive to maintain as the horror stories would imply? Let's see how this sensible, Diesel family wagon has fared in that regard.
    This 2007 BMW 525d Touring with a 3l M57 Diesel engine seems to be the perfect family car. But the family needs to have a bit of money left over to afford the maintenance on the car.

    As a BMW owner, I'm not surprised at all by these costs. You know what the funny thing is? I'm actually happy, 'cause I've owned several Audis that were even worse.

    Bro this same car in Eastern European countries is like 10 times less expensive to own 😂 Here, instead of replacing the turbo, they repair it so it's much cheaper. For the diesel particulate filter, they just drill out the stuff inside and code the sensor to not give an error. Labor is also cheap. Plus OEM parts are also cheap since there's a ton of companies out of Poland/Romania/etc that make them. For eg. I owned an E46 for about 6 years, drove it 60k km and I only spent like 3-4k in repairs + service. Shit tier countries have their perks I guess 😂

    This warranty is a minor miracle. They usually know how to make fat profits. Hard to imagine that other BMW of these model years are any better.

  • @JohnDoe_333

    I really like that analytic approach to the total costs. If you would ask most people what it costs them to drive 100km with their car probably no one would say that it's 100€.
    These old cars really need a lot of money. I drive an Audi A4 3.0tdi that is around ~13ct/km in repairs, ~8ct/km insurance+taxes and ~13ct/km in fuel (around 10l/100km) over the last 55000km. TCO = 34ct/km.
    I've done everything myself except for a timing chain job and try to use good quality third party parts, so the repair costs are relativly low.

    OMG, the differential breaking down is frightening. It shouldn't be that weak! My 2007 Lexus GS300 that I owned from last November onwards and with wich I've done 13,000 km has cost me under 2000€ in maintenance : rear complete brake job, water pump and accessory belt, Michelin tires, an A/C inspection, some instrument cluster and door panel clips replaced because of rattles, and one big service including engine oil, differential, transmission, cooling and braking fluid, air filter, cabin filter and spark plugs. Plus I've added LED bulbs everywhere and a Bluetooth audio HiFi kit. And most of these items are going to last between 5 and 10 years. God I gotta love my car even more that I did! It has about 200,000 km on it and I thought it was a lot of maintenance, I'm reconsidering the situation 😂
    To be fair, I went to the Autobahn with some friends. The Lexus was the most powerful and yet struggled the most because as any good pre-2010s car primarily design for Americans, its suspension is insanely soft, I had to slow down too much in corners. I caught back thanks to long straight portions but that was my only joker. The fastest all-around was the Polo GTI and the one with a Mégane was still more efficient than me and that makes me want quite a bit a BMW 5-Series or a MB E-Class but if the maintenance looks like this... I think I can live with it 😂
    Very good idea to do these TCOs on friends' cars. I love them and it is an opportunity to have more of that content.

    Hi Mario, another very nice video from you with a Swiss detailsm and accuracy ... You always got me reminding how high maintenance & running costs in CH.
    Except the yearly insurance (!) and recently increased fuel prices (!), my brain always tends to delete those costs such as oil changes, small repairs, tyre changes.. I think i need to do some spread sheets as well :)))

  • @ignoracy
    @ignoracy 8 місяців тому

    The main part of why it's so expensive is Switzerland - and I guess everything had to be done 110% perfectly. In Eastern Europe we wouldn't do half of these things, use replacement non OEM parts, and the labor would be 4-6 times cheaper.

  • @flaviokart16
    @flaviokart16 2 роки тому +3

    So, it seems that after 100k km the car starts to throw you a lot of expensive maintenance. Perhaps a good idea is to sell the car before it turns 100k km OR buy one with 150k km that got all the receipts of the work done like this one from your friend ;-)

    I don't know, sounds rather insane. You'd think that a run off the mill, middle class car wouldn't beat high performance cruisers in the maintenance department, but apparently it does. I'm fairly surprised, gotta admit. On the other hand I don't understand why it always has to be a dealership shop, without it he probably could have cut that cost in half. Did the insurance he bought required this or did he just wanted to do it this way? Especially if he intends to keep this car, he could have chosen a general mechanic. Thus my opinion is simple. You convince him to use normal mechanics for any future repairs, he saves a lot of money in the process and we split the saves franks three ways, one third for him, one third for you and one third goes to me as the guy who had this idea in the first place.

    We own a 2005 audi a3 with the 1.9 tdi engine and the total amount we spent on repairs and labour between 2010 (since we own this car) and now 2023 is 4000€ in Germany. We bought it with 80.000km and it has 320.000km on the clock right now. First turbo, first clutch, first dpf. The only things we replaced were the suspension items, thermostat, and the usuall interval pieces lime the waterpump. I cant imagine owning such a shitbox and spending 5k every year. A turbo should last a lifetime of the car.

    Yes that warranty definitely worth it's money. And after all, this car is too expensive for own. Maybe because bmw dealership is an expensive place, or maybe Switzerland is expensive overall. But 1500$ for window is too much, so as astronomical price for turbo. But on the other side, people in a normal country can afford such expenses

    A diesel turbo gave up at 125k? yikes
    It's a cute car I like it , but I would get pissed at spending 6 grand on a turbo for a freaking diesel engine that's supposed to be robust.
    In my opinion it's ok to spend a lot of money on a car if it's your hobby but this one is too expensive and not fun enough to justify.
    I'd prefer a Volvo v60 (probably cheaper to run, about the same HP, manual, diesel) or if you want something that would be really special that fills about the same spot as this car a V70R (it's a petrol tho).

      On a new-ish BMW 5-Series depreciation alone will be in the neighborhood of CHF 10k/year (these cars are so expensive!). So, I think it's very unlikely to be cheaper than an older car. Sure, repairs suck, but so does depreciation.

      @@imnotusingmyrealname4566 A car which ticks all the boxes (speed, handling etc), but is notoriously unreliable, is a bad car in my opinion. You might have other priorities and that's fine. With a 2007 car you know what you're going into as there's a lot of data online. I won't generalize which brand and model is good and which is not - consumer reports are doing better job at it than a random guy in youtube comments like me.
