A Texan hook has become a must-have for fishing in congested environments. It makes it possible to limit hooks while having a number of fish dropouts, certainly higher than conventional jig heads, but nevertheless very acceptable. But to obtain optimal results, you still need a hook of a size adapted to the soft lure used. I therefore offer you this table to help you find your way:

On certain soft lures, it is possible to add a size. For example, for a 4 inch that is a little thick (but which can still be cocked in Texan), you can put a head in 4/0 instead of 3/0. On the other hand, removing a size does not seem possible to me.
Overall, you need one size more than for a classic jig head. This is a good reference to help you if you don’t have this table in front of you.

The Texan hook for which lures?
Although Texan rigs are interesting, they are unfortunately not possible for all soft lures. The body should not be too wide. If you have mounted your shad or grub, try manually tilting it to see if the tip comes out easily. If the belly hits the shank of the hook before the point is fully out, forget the Texan here.
In most cases, manufacturers have integrated a slit on the back or even on the stomach. This dorsal slot allows the point of the hook to be hidden to further limit snagging and the thinner body where the hook passes allows better penetration into the fish's mouth.
Obviously, the softer the lure, the easier the hooking will be. On the other hand, it will be more fragile and the passage at the head, which is the weak point of the Texan weaponry, risks giving way. And in this case, your flexible will be unusable with this type of hook. But don't worry, it's not lost! You can arm it with a classic jig head and give it a second life.
