Today I drive the fabulous McLaren 650S. Originally designed to sit alongside the 12C, it all but replaced it in a few months. Featuring a whole host of upgrades to everything from powertrain to infotainment, the 650 is the 12C but just better. Is it still worth buying, even with McLaren's reputation?

Can you please tell me if you could choose between 650 S and 570 S which would you choose? I really respect your opinion and I am in the market for one of them, so please give me advice..
I am from EU, enjoying your videos for some time now, so keep up the good work! 👍🏻
Just traded my 600WHP Supra for a 650s. So much better. In every way. Except maybe sound. I’m sure upgrading the exhaust will help a bit though.
A mk4 or a mk5?

That's a huge upgrade in price
I’ve got a preview for you if you want…stage 2 straight piped 650s spyder, it’s worth it by the way trust me it can sound so much better
As a future 650S owner, this is precisely the kind of video I don't want. Stop it please. More videos about 911s being the best option would be preferred. Thanks :)
Same feeling here man. He just gave away such a nice secret.
haha!
you already know that the 911 is the best pure sports car but you came here anyways
@@weho_brian Actually no. I think the Ariel Atom is the best pure sports car for the road and already have one of those. As it says in the title of the video, we're talking about supercars and the 650S is next on my shopping list. Or maybe a 12c :). We all seem to agree though that 911's aren't supercars.
Lovely specification. If only McLaren could show they care about their customers after selling them a car, or about people who have bought a used one, they would help themselves with future sales. They have a seemingly short-sighted attitude.
really? may i know what's the problem? sorry to ask... i thought they are good..
@@ashriqzan8762 Numerous reports of poor car preparation, lack of coordination and communication and apparently some bouncing from pillar to post. Porsche have many independent specialists, many well established and with excellent reputations. Ferrari have started a programme for used and older cars. McLaren need to get on top of this sooner rather than later as longer term benefits will well outweigh short-term costs.
@@resnonverba137 McLaren makes my favorite cars, I know some people find it to be the same boring design but I treated like a 911 where they just continuously iterate on something. It's my favorite Supercar, but everything you said is the exact reason why I would rather just get a Ferrari FF

This rear end I love it. It's 1980s and Group C prototypes blended into the 2010s. The strakes are gorgeous, it was perfect but they ditched it for family feeling
I’ve driven 600LT and GT for extended periods ( 3 months ) and also had my 12C over 16 months now - and I have to say the 12C is a phenomenal car, I don’t agree regarding steering, it feels very similar to my Lotus Exige S2, very direct - also my 12C has a sports exhaust and it’s very loud, idles loudly and aggressively, sounds like a GT3 race car! Anyway great video, good to see you reviewing a `McLaren again and btw - your video about buying the 12C back last year made me buy mine ! :)
Which is your favorite? Like all around
What’s the cheapest one you can get into in the US?
@@SicSemperBeats 12c looks are far better, far sleeker and beautiful, 600lt looks like bits stuck on, the GT has an odd rear hind area, too chunky, odd design

I have a 650s spider and I couldn’t have said it better. It’s really a brilliant daily driver. Spot on that you need to get this car with warranty. Thank you so much for the review… especially this: “ I am that guy who hates Mclaren and if I tell you to get one, it must be really that good “ 😅..
Thanks Christopher, always glad when owners agree with my assessment - means I got it right!
do you also go: "how's the turning circle...oh it's crap" xD
just kidding mate, I do hope you genuinely enjoy the car, quirks and all
I truly think the 650s the 675LT and P1 are the absolute sweet spot for
Checked the classifieds...nope, still can't afford one.
Great video James. Simon has now sold his 650s. He said it was an amazing car too. All the best. ✌🏼
If this car drives as good with some miles on it as it did when it was new it has to still be amazing. I drove a 650 Spider several years ago as well as a 458 Spider and to be honest the Mclaren was so much better than the Ferrari it was embarrassing. James didn’t touch on this much in the video but the 650 has an absolute granite structure which is extraordinarily rare for any convertible and it made the Ferrari feel like a vintage car in comparison with its shocking amount of flex and shake. Also, the 650 steering had so much more feel, the power was night and day better, high speed stability felt much more planted. I know everyone thinks the 458 sounds amazing but I found the 650 sounded better and much more organic compared to the 458’s particularly when the Ferraris exhaust valves constantly open and close below 4-5k rpm. The only area the Ferrari had an advantage was I think the transmission was better but other than that Mclaren was hands down better driving experience.
Interesting review, thanks for this! Will reconsider thus McClaren, though still concerned about reliability...suppose Ferarri is no better there anyhow.
I might have to stick with my 15' Turbo 911 in the meantime...but I am "getting the itch to switch"
911 is always a keeper, I have a 991.2 turbo s, but I do get itches from time to time lol
I think the McLaren is very cheaply made vs Ferrari. The McLaren does drive better in my opinion, but the Ferrari feels better. I'm comparing the 488 Spider vs the 650S.
The McLaren should be better than the Ferrari. The 458 Italia is from 2009. The 650S is from 2014, and competes with the 2015 488 GTB.
@@projectr2451 the 650S was really just an update to the 12C, which was designed at the exact same time as the 458. The 458 was unveiled in late 2009 and the MP4 12C in 2010, and its the carbon tubbed construction and hydraulic steering that give it the real edge over the 458……both of which were on the 12C.
Cracking review,, unreal content mate keep it coming!
I had the same idea! Picked one up about 5 weeks ago and haven't stopped grinning since! Huge amount of fun and performance for the money.
Aren’t they great!!!
Good review really like the spec on that car. Agree that seems like the sweet spot value wise especially these days. Find one with all the common maintenance work done and that would make a solid weekend warrior.
That's a crackin looking car - looks lovely in white 👍 Would be on my short list. Congrats James a really good choice
Thanks 👍
Very cool car. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Great video i own a 650 spider and love it i have the MC upgraded exhaust 5K option and it sounds great.
I`ve owned mine for 18 months and yes had a coolant leak and had to change the accumulator's on all 4 corners £250 a corner .....other then that it runs great and always putts a smile on you're face..
Do you know if the one he is test driving in the video has the upgraded exhaust or not? Maybe I missed it
Nice review! I'm looking at one right now ;)
Stunning good looks and that performance...Hell yes.
Excellent review. Car sounds amazing.
Very very good looking, sounds nice to me and I trust your word for it being very quick. I absolutely love how radical the 720 is but apparently it is very poorly build for a 300 grand
Great intro music James 👍
Just bought one and absolutely love it! Definitely way better bang for the buck than a Huracán and has the exotic doors that the Huracán doesn’t have!
How is the inside space for us tall guys, 6ft6 I wonder, a C7 Corvette Z06 is way too small for me😏
Good review JM. I'm really tempted by these and this looks look a nice one (except for the fit of the leather on the driver's seat, which looks a bit saggy).
White with red interior is a solid combo. 👍
Bang on, love my 650S Spyder, best car I've ever owned! 👌🏻
I can't be alone in thinking the 12C was prettier than any of the models based on it that followed.
Agreed, and In my opinion it sounded throatier and deeper. Not sure if they went for equal length headers after that or what.
My goodness. I know McLaren don't make good-sounding V8 but the one in 12C, P1 and especially 650S is pretty fruity. Better than 570S, in my book. Doesn't quite have that crazy firecracker on every upshift like in 675LT but that's fine by me. I think they should have stayed with that unequal length header just like on the 720S GT3. And GT, surprisingly.
Yeah I very much agree. The older McLaren exhausts have that deeper undertone, the bassy lowdown, that set it apart from other turbo 8's. New ones still sound fine, but they have that tinny rasp which comes second to this.
Maybe it's just my headphones but the 650S in this video sounds kind of industrial and overworked. Not bad per se, but it's more like a C4 Corvette than an Aston Martin DB9.
McLaren don’t make engines, they’re made by Ricardo.
@@JayMaverick I think pretty much every 12C, 650S and P1 sounds rather industrial. The 12C/650S/720S GT3 even more so. Kinda like it though, so different from other flat-plane V8s.

Interesting review. Do wonder what would happen to the McLaren quality control, customer service and car division if Audi did buy the whole thing, lock stock and barrel so they could get ahold of the f1 team (apart from the applied technologies division).
12:02 - in defence of the GT-R, when they split the Nismo from the road version, the road version got dramatically better suspension. I had one test drive and immediately traded in my 2010 for the 2015 - that's how dramatic it was. But I have thought very seriously about a Macca - the biggest hurdle is the GT-R boot and back seats - they're massive - it's an insanely practical car and a lovely daily driver. And I already have other silly track toys.
Both great cars, I drove a 2017 GTR and yep, much better damped
These things are seriously undervalued at the moment, when you look at what you have to spend to get similar performance in other brands this is extraordinarily cheap! Stand to appreciate I think
If reliability is not there then price is fair
Let me know if the repair bill is undervalued as well 😆
@@marfrandema1884 Only ever claimed once on the warranty of mine, 5 year old and approaching 14k miles

Congratulations
In next weeks video Jay is invited to Woking to review the Artura
If McLaren have faith in their product they should!
Fabulous car. Great to see Thorpey and Litchfield supporting these. In truth I doubt anyone buys a car like this without a warranty. The £30k needed as a repair budget will have gone into the down payment!
Couple of things, its a 12c with the following differences, obviously bodywork, slightly modified cylinder heads, slightly stiffer at the rear, suspension accumulators on top of the struts, thats literally it. The gearbox software, engine software that controls throttle response is still all the same as a 12c. 12c/650 amazing cars, and despite what people say they ARE reliable. Ive owned mine for over a year with nothing serious but normal car issues such as the occasional water leak which is easily fixed by replacing hose clamps with proper adjustment. If you maintain these cars properly and know what you are doing, you will have zero issues. BUY ONE, oh just to add, mine is not warrantied and I have that much confidence that I wont be purchasing one either. Waste of money. Its totally possible to own one of these cars without. Just make sure its been properly maintained and you are good. Considering the direction the brand is going, I very much doubt the cars will drop further in value, even the 12c. Sorry.
I would also like to add that my car is now on 24k miles. Gearbox issues are mainly for cars that are not driven. a friend of mine owns one of the highest mileage 12cs on the planet at around 65k. In a very hot climate, Dubai, hes had no issues.
I was on the fence buying one of these for a long time between an R8. The 12c is much better than the R8 v10 on paper and im pleased to say it is in real life as well. BUY
Best looking car they made right behind the speedtail and F1. Perfect blend of laidback grace and aggressive aero.
That driver's seat seems to be losing the fight a little. Maybe something to add to the warranty fixes? Great video by the way...
Great review, the dream is having a 650 in my life 😍
You mentioned about Thorne Motorsport providing a cheaper warranty, I’m sure I read something about McLaren banning their dealerships from selling parts to Thorney MS?!
I assume that Thorney MS have overcome this hurdle?
Yes they have
I don't know why but supercars and hypercars don't interest me or get me excited. But then I get excited when I see an old Jaguar XJS V12 so what do I know.
It's great to see an ALL British car that's very good. Including the beautiful classic Mini in front which isn't a bmw.... 🙂
lovely video.lovely enthusiasm, lovely idea....now where did I leave that lovely 100k?
Another friend called James, James?, are you cornering the market of them, or are they one of your original Jameses?!

This car for value, p1 for pure savegery, and 720 spider for pure beauty👌
I really miss the rear light design on these
Very tempting have I got room in my garage ?
I like how small these cars are.
Great new video Jay, but I do get a tick every time you recommend a warranty. Statistically, if a warranty were worth having, you wouldn't be able to buy one. Over time, and maybe more than one or two cars, you *will* be better off simply with a savings account. The logic, and maths, is obvious.
mclaren's look nice and they're fast... that's the beginning and end of the positives!
I enjoy your channel. The big downside is you never use the camera angle showing the dash when you’re driving. I’d be all for it if that was the only angle throughout the whole video.
For someone who has a rather dim view of McLaren after sales service, you do seem to enjoy driving their cars!
Always have!
One of the best cars I have driven! So easy to drive fast!
I've always found the 570GT to have the nicest looks
If I were willing to accept a sports car without a proper manual gearbox, while ignoring issues of reliability and downtime, the McLaren 650S would be the benchmark -- the one to beat for my money. If I had anything like enough money...
One of the best sounding cars.
I never understand all the knocking if the IRIS infotainment. I get in press Bluetooth and my phone is automatically connected. Then you only need to adjust volume. I wish it would do carp[lay but for an 9 year old system its really not that bad.
I find the scud just as enjoyable to drive slow, I can get lost in that sound ANYWHERE at ANY SPEED
i mean, if you actually want speed you could always get an ultima or something similar, bugatti levels of speed for supercar money.
Good 👍🏻 vid
Deciding to upgrade my Peugeot 106 diesel, this model of McLaren was on my 'possible' list. But at 58, and with a bad back, the low down position and the noisy engine were just too much for a miserable old git such as myself....shame, because I do like the look of them...
Best sounding Mclaren engine in my book
I'm debating between the 650s or the 12c only issue is I'm only 15 :/
Wow ,very little uk manufacturing beating from jem.shock.thumbs up
Oh I just luved this guy in Shaun of the dead
Interesting about the Thorny warranty. I thought he said it was bumper to bumper. I'm sure he says on one of his videos that they can repair anything for circa £10k. Guess that's what the upper claim limit is. Wonder if it doesn't include the engine then. I would also question the costs/availability of parts for the gearbox too, but I think they're pretty reliable. Would love a McLaren but cost would be at the upper limit of my budget so maintenance costs works be a concern.
Thorney have answered this. Yes there is an upper claim limit of £10k, but that includes more or less all gearbox work and would cover rebuilding the top end of the engine too. they've only ever seen one or two bottom end failures and at least one of those was down to poor maintenance
@@JayEmmOnCars
Cool thanks for clarifying. Are all McLaren warranties £5k or are the 12c ones still 3k? At £2.8k/£10k claim limit I guess his are pretty competitive. If keeping the car 3yrs or less then makes sense but if keeping longer then maybe just budgeting the money rather than laying out up front is a good option. How much better than the 12c do you think the 650 is? Is it worth the extra outlay?
Stu crikey..... i was am in the process of considering (and window shopping) for a mclaren to add to the garage. The R8 v10 i have is covered by audi warranty at 900/year, all components, and no upper limit (it was 2k for first year cover). Mclaren warranty costs really do put me off, and even maintaining a "fund" looks as though it could be expensive!
@@davidm793
Yup same boat here. Have a V8 myself and yeah the warranty cost after the first year is pretty decent. Looking at stepping up the V10 myself. The R8 at these price points is difficult to beat to be honest.
Stu agreed and the sound/presence cant be beaten. The lmx is a keeper. I am lucky that we could take another car (my wife is very understanding) and we even looked at mclaren 600lt last week. No drive or anything, just to see how it looks. Very tempted, but the reliability and warranty is always a worry.

You know, at first I was about to counter with "but the SLS roadster" - but then I checked the prices, and the 650S is coming in like 10-20k below an SLS roadster and does better on paper, too.
Maintenance will be a nightmare for the 650S compared to the benz, but you can't eat your cake and have it too. Especially relevant today, 11 months later and after the peak of the market.
And I just don't like the drive of the SLS

Exhaust noise is lacking for me. Not sure if this has the optional sports exhaust?
First world problems, agreed there’s some subtle upgrades on the 650 but I have a 12C Spider and am more than happy. Yes it has ancillary issues, faults and agreed always obtain a warranty. I’m no Ayrton but I have no issues with the gearbox, suspension or the sound, I don’t actually like folk staring if it’s unobtrusively loud at low speed, when you gun it, it’s awesome. Design wise in my mind it’s timeless, Mr Stephenson didn’t and doesn’t add bs to his designs it’s all functional. Practical wise I take it to the supermarket and garden centre and can even fit a 100 litre bag of compost in the front. Performance driving wise went to the Nurburgring last month and stayed with Apex, it was awesome on every corner, straight of the 14 mile green hell. Also a shed load of people came up to me in the car parks around the circuit and complemented its looks/design which I thought was interesting as there was some real kit there. 🏎💨
12C is still an excellent car
What’s happened to the drivers seat? Is it not covered in the warranty?
Seen so many supercars, they don't stand out to me anymore. I'm becoming more and more attracted to the classics instead. Must be getting old. Lol.
Nice report. Have 3 in the garage 12C Spider, 650S Coupe and 720S Spider. Best sports car I've ever had. Have already driven more than 150,000 km on my three. So far only very minor problems. Not more than with other cars. I can only advise everyone to drive or buy one. Greetings from Germany.

Great review, I have one and love it. Question, you mentioned 720s was a backward step, can you elaborate as I thought it would be the logical next ‘step up?’ Thanks
Of course, the main issue seems to be in terms of build quality - 720 generally had more issues
But the 720s is leaps and bounds ahead in terms or performance, tech, downforce, handling etc etc etc?? 🤷🏼♂️
@@marknash74 performance and build quality are 2 different things.

My only grief with the McLaren range is that they've gone to the Porsche design school of making everything look the same
my thoughts exactly...already imagining an SUV with a 570 front
I do find their different cars look very different (if you can’t tell a 911 and cayman apart i mean common are you even trying?) the SUV’s definitely do look similar but ill say absolutely nothing else on the road looks like a panamera. Now… when it comes to 911 yes i agree but ill argue its not a bad thing
can it beat a 911 turbo s though?
What about the 720s sport? Can be picked up for £70k. The 650s is starting to appreciate and looking at £100k
Which do you prefer out of this and the Honda NSX you recently tested and also loved?

Would you get spider or coupe? Since it doesn't sound that great, was thinking coupe
Arguably there's no reason to choose the coupe as the carbon tub is so stiff that you lose nothing by going convertible
Balancing out the positives and negatives, spider is the easy decision unless you particularly like the visuals of a coupe. Next to nobody is capable of using the extra bit of performance a coupe gives; everyone is capable of dropping the roof and enjoying the sunshine etc.
Honestly it'd have to be a spider

If Jay says it’s a good car I believe him. I’m in no position to buy a McLaren and may never be. I love cars of all types, ages and brands, but I just cannot get interested in McClaren. I don’t know why, but the brand and their cars do nothing for me. Even if driven it was the best thing ever (which they’re not) I know I wouldn’t want one. When I see them on screen or in person I feel nothing. So very odd for a born petrol head. An interesting review though and many thanks to JayEmm for the content.
Fully agree, the only reason I'm watching a McLaren video (apart from the F1) is Jay presenting. I find them so generic, all looking the same as sound so boring. I don't care at all if they are fast, that's almost a weakness in my view for a road car. Only teenagers should care about speed. Emotion and feel are what matters IMHO.
