    I lived in Bristol from 2011 to 2018. Back then I thought it was an expensive place to live, and recently I checked what the rent prices are now and it's truly absurd.
    There were times where my money problems were getting so out of hand that it really made me think that if I didn't have friends or family helping me out, I could of easily of ended up on the streets. It could happen to anyone, which is quite a freighting thought.

    On line shopping and out of town retail parks combined with high business rates and greedy council parking charges have ruined our town centres. Local councils seem to be doing nothing to improve the situation. What's needed is a national strategy to tackle this problem but don't hold your breath.

    • @emmmoo8631
      @emmmoo8631 10 місяців тому +3

      I agree councils are a major problem putting up business rates and other rates for events. Many years ago ie 15yrs agon there was a fantastic launch of an event called the "vegefest" that was massive and held at the sheds in central and it was free entry with large number of stalls some even came from Europe. Then council wanted bigger rent space fees then they started entrance fees that was reasonable but small amount, which grew over years to nearly £20 entry fee for day just to walk around look at stalls! All this due to greed of councils. No one ever cared to do much, and now that event has all but disappeared!

    • @yazajin
      @yazajin 10 місяців тому +1

      Councils seem all but content to drain resources from what little rapidly vanishing businesses they still have operating in their areas until the tap is empty instead of trying to work on any kind of sustainable solution with mutual benefits. They'll keep at it until nothing is left then claim it's not their fault.

    Thank you for this video. I lived in Bristol on the dole and on housing benefit during 2003-04 when the economy was supposed to be great because of Tony Blair. My flat on the Redland Road was full of dampness and black mould and my weekly treat was a £1 per pint night on the Gloucester Road in my musty smelling clothes. I sympathise with Bristol's homeless: I walked home past booming Christmas pubs and restaurants full of laughing people and over the homeless to get to my damp flat. I was one month away from the streets so I know it can happen to anyone in Bristol. It really was a Charles Dickens experience for me and this was before the 2008 crash and the Covid era.

    The reason people can't afford to live in Bristol is the Londoners trying to escape living in a 3rd world immigrant city. Still commutable to work. This forces the people who used to be able to live there to move out. This perpetuates as far as Norfolk by my personal knowledge as it's only a 90 minute train ride to the smoke and cash. London is the actual no go zone and to be blunt the phenomena is referred to as 'white flight'.

    • @-Osiris-
      @-Osiris- 10 місяців тому +1

    Well done Joe for highlighting the issue of homelessness & deprivation, and people trying to help those who live on the streets in our cities & towns to get back on track. Bristol is not unique, it's growing throughout the country, exasperated by decades of general lack of investment, and it rises further due to the cost of living/housing crisis. I too think of the cold & hunger. When I was a tot I lived in council housing, my Dad would tuck us up on freezing cold nights, and say think about how blessed you are to be warm and cosy, people are sleeping outside tonight. Homelessness was no way near what it is now. Just near me, in a small town outside Manchester, some young people have pitched up tents nr the petrol station. I've never seen that all the time I have lived here.

    In my experience, they all work differently but the fundamental thing is, you got to want to help yourself by helping others. Some who are living homeless don't want to follow rules all work. But the fact is you need to be able to do this to get on in life.

    It's all part of the plan. Keeping property prices as high as possible, is essential to the government. With high property prices, high rents follow. The (side) effect of that is massive homelessness. One follows from the other.
    For example, the parts of California with the very highest property prices and rents, commercial and residential, have the greatest homelessness rates.

    My home town. Still love Bristol. It's still a great city. St. Pauls was always an 'interesting' area for all the wrong reasons. I don't blame the people just the situation they were put in. Poverty, discrimination and lack of opportunity. I remember the riots in 1980. But I never felt unsafe there because I never went looking for trouble. To be honest I have felt more unsafe in some small villages at night. The gentrification of Bristol is no different to other cities as those with high paying London jobs are pushing out the middle class because they will pay more for the in demand housing. Even happening here in the USA. Thanks for the video JoeFish. You are a very good hearted and genuine guy.

    Stokes Croft area, City Road and Saint Pauls have been the dodgy/naughty/dangerous areas of Bristol for at least 45 years or so. So it's kind of always been like that, it's not a new phenomenon. I lived in squats on Picton Street then City Road and a bit on Ashley Road in the early and mid 80's. Drug dealers down the Saint Pauls end of Ashley Road with prostitutes walking the side streets. I got mugged on City Road once. Very rarely went down Saint Pauls after dark! The whole area was dodgy and still is. It would be *_news_* if it *_wasn't!_*

    I used to know Bristol really well, and there is alot of ignorance around homelessness. Mainly from those that "assume". Did you ask that old man how long been homeless? I can tell you there are / were 6 major agencies in Bristol alone that regularly go out and pick up homeless off streets and have soup kitchens and board n lodgings and then possible referrals come from that to drug/alcohol support agencies. Most homeless have a mobile phone and agencies will maintain contact with them. many homeless flat out refuse services offered as they "want to hang with their freinds" or "dont like being indoors". There are also "tourist" homelessless that bus in from other cities if they get word that the beggings tips are good in an area. This is a fact. Also, yes middleclass are being squeezed out of existence due to high taxes/cost of living as Bristol is very socialist. This never effects the very wealthy as this lot hide most of their money in offshore accounts! There are other areas of Bristol that are also horrendous places are Knowle West and Hartcliffe ie large estates where thug kid gangs hang around and cause vandalism/theft damage assault on nearby people even animal abuse is very high in these areas, its the culture they cultivate. Massive student/drug scene in Bristol, nothing to do with class its just a new culture venture that is up and down the UK now.

    The Country is run to make excessively rich people even richer. The richest 20 people got £65b richer last year.
    Low tax gives rich more but cuts services, affecting the education, health and wellbeing of the masses.
    The country allows 500,000 people annually to enter the country, putting more pressure on services and resources, but also increasing the value of assets. The rich own the assets.
    We could help ourselves by buying British, and creating manufacturing in the UK.
    If someone wanted to design a Country, Britain would be it. Warm enough not to be ice, cold enough not to be a desert, an island that can be protected. seas to fish, and to cap it all the World speaks our language. Yet politicians still mess it up.

    Hey, Joe. Well done so far. Just a little insight. Doesn't matter if you are in the richest or poorest country, those on the fringes of society are going to find it difficult. Doesn't mean they can't succeed but they have to get rid of their negative views towards education and law & order etc., then they have a fighting chance. People are also homeless because of mental health rather than other reasons, so, we can't remove everyone from the streets if that's where they want to live. We're going to see some of this no matter where you go. It's not societies fault in every case... it's mental health for many people who can't keep a home for whatever reason.
