    Could I do watering in these 7-10 days of resting time in the pot of stock?

  • @lowe-quay-shush

    The 'Blanket' technique is exactly what I need to do when attaching & not damaging the bottom part because it has rows of vertically needles around it. I also heard putting a small circular piece of cling wrap then using kitchen cooking string to gently close it up on just the top 1/3 of grafting is good for shock/germ protection/incubation curing & dry out trauma Kinda like an oxygen tent over the hospital bed! True?

    Of course the basic cactus must be with roots!
    How long should the tape be left on before removing it? .

    This was wonderful to watch! thank you so much, might i suggest using a rubber band instead of tape so there’s no risk of chemicals in the glue touching the exposed cactus.

      Hey Thomas,
      Thanks so much!
      I have actually switched to bands as they are faster to use, they just come with a steep learning curve and many scions being flung arund the room! ha ha ha

    Would the astrophytum make pups after it's been cut like this?

    • @87walker
      @87walker  3 роки тому +1

      The base will make pups when cut in this way. I do not use the bases but they can also be grafted to make more plants.

    When should I water the cactus after grafting, ma'am?

  • @requiredfieldcannotbeleftb9746

    Hi, I've got some cacti I've grown from seed so they're still less than 1cm wide. If I graft them together at this stage, will the rootstock continue to grow larger and additional roots, supporting the scion as that also grows? Or is it necessary to use a much more mature rootstock?

      Hello, sorry for the late reply! The base cactus is Myrtillocactus Geometrizans. This is one of the most popular choices for grafting - The king however is Trichocereus Pachanoi ... Thanks for watching & Happy Gardening!

    Thank you, very informative. I am inquiring if in thd event can you separate them again and plant the upper portion direct to the soil??

    • @87walker
      @87walker  6 років тому +2

      Glad you liked the video! Yes these plants can be separated and then the top portion treated like a cutting where it will produce roots and grow again on its own. Not all cacti can be degrafted as many that are grafted do not produce chlorophyll, the yellow and red "moon cactus" are examples of this. Thanks for watching & Happy Gardening!

    Why do they fail if the vascular tubes line up?

  • @darwincaronan
    @darwincaronan 6 років тому

    What to do if the central vascular cambium is dissimilar? Let us say, the scion has small diameter of vascular and the root stock has big diameter. Is there a chance of success? Thank you

    • @87walker
      @87walker  6 років тому +1

      Most of the time the scion will have a much smaller vascular ring, you just need to ensure this overlaps the stocks ring. You want them to cross each other not line up. Think of the olympic rings, that is what you are after. Hope that helps! Happy Gardening!

    Does the part 2 cactus go into a humid box also or only pereskiopsis as the root stock?

    • @87walker
      @87walker  6 років тому +1

      I put the part 2 in a humidity box but only for 5 days, just to prevent the cut surfaces of the stock plant shrinking too rapidly. You don't have to put part 2 grafts in a humidity box but Pereskiopsis must be. Happy Gardening!

      Hi, I leave the tape on for 7-10 days this will depend on whether the cut tissue of the grafting stock is healthy or if there are nasties appearing which can happen even with proper sterilization of the blades. Thanks for watching & Happy Gardening!

    can I graft onto any cacti?

    • @87walker
      @87walker  6 років тому +1

      Most cacti will take to any other cacti - some work better than others and there are a few which can be difficult to get to take to certain types however these are few and far between. The best all rounder is Trichocereus Pachanoi followed by Myrtillocactus Geometrizans. Hope that helps, Happy Gardening!

    This is evil

    • @87walker
      @87walker  6 років тому +8

      Not sure I agree. From cutting this plant 2 things are achieved: 1) it almost eliminates the chance of the top portion rotting and dying enabling this plant to grow into a magnificent cactus 2) the base will produce more plants. Grafting is not exclusively performed on cacti, if you have ever eaten an apple, pear, orange and the list would go on and on then it is almost certain that the fruit would have come from a grafted tree. I have nothing but respect and admiration for cacti and all plants for that matter, to say it is evil is not a very kind thing to say at all. Regardless of that, I hope you have a great week ahead.

    • @jimywebb23
      @jimywebb23 6 років тому +2

      evil? the plants dont mind if you know what youre doing, and mr. 87walker def knows his procedure, it can be hard the first time you try it, but it really can save plants from root rot and like he said speeding up the growth of slow growers. keep an open mind, ppl that do this most likely love their plants and consider what theyre doing before making any cuts
