  • How do you like your clean tone? Some of your favorites may be dirtier than you think. Shawn Tubbs shows how to put an amp close to the edge of breakup & control the tone with your hands, using a D20 & G2.

Great video. I used to go for a very clean tone but now I'm using my clean with light crunch. It helps pronouncing my overdrive tone most specially my tranparent drives way better compared with a clean amp without breakup.

That lick and that tone at 1:11 is exquisite. Fantastic.

the age old question, lol first time I ever heard it asked. Nice playing! One thing I noticed, is I attribute lower treble tones with cleanness. The harshness of high end makes it less clean, for me. A rolled off, low gain tone to me sounds the cleanest.

I really like playing with a light-crunch edge-of-breakup tone that I can roll off the volume to clean it up, like what you're doing. I can get by with less pedals this way, and I only rarely need a true pristine clean.

My D20 is enroute and I am going to try this technique. I normally use modeling or a modeling hybrid live in a single guitarist band, but other pro's and friends I know highly recommend a bit of hair to help cut through the mix better and then layering gain via overdrives. I also prefer bringing in less gain from overdrives out front but being able to bring up the volume/level of the drive to push the amp input more which doesn't always work with pristine clean because of large volume spikes from unity gain. Archer Ikon is great example; that has a ton of volume boost and cascaded with other drives or a slightly crunchy amp it's fantastic, but used just in front of a pristine clean amp it's way, way too loud of a boost.

This was interesting. Showing how and why helped me understand and hear more of what I look for. Thanks for this!

Hi Shawn, when you set the amp on the edge of break up like you do it is it possible to manage delays and modulations in front of the amp?
    Thanks a lot
    Beautiful playing as usual!!!

Great video, very informative, and convincing with examples as I'm still groping for "that" tone. Just feel like I should mention James Wilsey from early Chris Isaak as far as an amazing clean. Thanks!

You always have a great sound. To answer your question, these days I've been using two amps wet /dry with one dialed crystal clean and the other edge of breakup which seems to work well for me how I play. Thanks for all you share🎸

Hi Shawn . Great vid as always.
Did you use the crunch channel on the D20 for this example? thanks.

Thanks! This time around I didn't use the crunch channel at all. Just turned the volume up and down.

Nice Shawn - my go to clean has a harlow pedal (neve/bogner) pushing the front end with very low on the level with the bloom at about 12 oclock with a shimmer verb from my H5 - it's pretty pristine like clean (sounds beautiful) then I will kick in the precision drive if I want some break up - I completely agree with how your explaining your approach - pushing the drive some gives some more compression which feels good when your playing much more feel and expression on tap. More dynamic for sure.

to me theres nothing cleaner than a fender twin a stratocaster with the help of little reverb and delay IMO

I'll never tell!!!..... REVV 4x12 cab with Royer / 57 mic combo. It's the stock cab and mic combo preset that comes with the D20 which is position 1 on the rotary switch. Thanks for watching!
