You're not missing much, it's a ridiculous system that literally no one thinks is sensible except the people benefitting from it. We don't vote for the winning government or the Prime Minister or even the party we want to win, we vote for the person we want to represent/be in charge of our immediate local area, and the winner of each local election gets one of the "seats" from the video. They then tally up how many of those local reps (MPs) belong to each party and the party with the most members elected to seats wins. The designated constituent area for each seat can have way more or way fewer voters living in it than other areas with seats and can also be substantially bigger or smaller, also the boundary is subject to change. No one quite seems to know how all that's decided. If the party you want to win overall doesn't have a person standing for election for your local seat then you straight up can't vote for that party. If you just want to vote for Prime Minister then you're shit out of luck. The PM is the party leader for whichever party won the most seats, and you can only vote for someone to be leader of a party if you are a paid member of that party during their leadership elections, which do not automatically take place in advance of a General Election. Our current PM wasn't even elected by his party members, as the leadership vote was restricted to his own party's MPs. Meaning our Prime Minister, leader of our country, was elected by a couple hundred Tory MPs while the general public had no say in this. The justification being that it's none of our beeswax as we voted for our local MP not the PM and so it shouldn't matter if they swap it all about a bit.
