I'm glad he mentioned that dial shifter. That's the one thing I don't care for either. It's not something that would keep me from buying the truck, but I would have definitely preferred a traditional shift lever like the Grand Cherokee still has.
I have a 2014 Ram 1500 4X4.Quad Cab with the 5.7 HEMI and 8 speed trans. and tow option. It is rated at 10,250 for towing. It pulls my 27' enclosed car trailer with my 69 Charger inside Extremely well. Total Trailer weight is 8,100lbs. Yes you know it's back there but aside from the weight, this truck doesn't even break a sweat. It's nice to pass a Ford F-150 or Chevy 1500 pulling similar trailers. Not Down playing either one but the Ram is Tough.

Dave I love your reviews, you are very interesting to listen to and talk about all the important items that helps make a decision on a purchase.
One thing I really like about the ram, is the interior finish looks much nicer than the competitors. The nav screen also is better quality.
Also i agree on the knob gear selector, i did notice that it seemed easy and quick for you to change from drive to reverse in the video. I ran into a few 2013s that didnt have the 8spd, and had the shift lever, i wouldnt want the shift lever over having the 8 speed with the shift knob. I would rather get use to the shift knob. From what i read the 8 speed transmission is awesome
my friends both own 13' and 14' ecos, and i was sold the day i drove my 14' RAM. got the sport, quad cab with the 8 speed/hemi. what a dream to drive. my 11' jeep wrangler drove more like a truck then my ram does lol. the 8 speed when crusing around town likes to shift often, but you will get used to it. it shifts nicely and quickly. when going down hill and you tap the brakes to keep the truck from taking off, it will automatically shift 1 or 2 gears to maintain your speed. very cool feature! i havent broken in my hemi yet and the vvt hasnt activated so on the highway the truck is kicking into 7th gear and not using the vvt. so hopefully my mpg will get better than the 16-17mpg im getting now. love this truck!
I just traded in my 08' 1500 with the 4.7 for the 2014 1500 with the 5.7. This video increases my confidence that I did the right thing!

I've had this model year hemi base trim since Oct, 2013. It gets very good milage. On p-rated factory tires. I now run a set of bf Goodrich ko2 same size as stock and fuel economy has suffered a lot.
might just be me but that "off road" test is my driving on the highways on a good day in winter. our side roads don't look that good till middle of April most years.
Nice review, I'm due for a new ride and this is at the top of my list...trucks are so much better than they were 10 years ago.
Excellent review. After test driving this truck and the comparable Ford F-150, this truck wins hands down. Ride and build quality are night and day. Will be purchasing this truck in the next 2 weeks.
Just bought a 2014 Ram Double Cab 5.7L Outdoorsman. Its Sick, 20" Black Rims, Lower Paint, Bumpers and Fenders. Loaded. Just sold my 05 5.7 Reg Cab SLT with 175,000KM(CANADIAN) and no major problems with it. Glad to hear Dodge is only getting better, ride amazing, looks sexy, and Haul Ass.

I'm a Chevy/GM boy but I think ram makes beautiful trucks. Ram1500-3500 all beautiful chevy/gmc 1500-3500 all beautiful ford250-350 beautiful I think the f150 is sort of ugly.

But ram and Chevy looks good no matter what
@4:10 you reach for the gear shifter on the steering column. I borrowed my friend's Durango and it has the same 8 speed transmission and I must have done the same thing a dozen times. Haha.
I have this same truck with a black interior and absolutely love it. Do yourself and favor and go drive the Ram if your out looking for a truck, you won't be disappointed. Only gripe would be the shifter dial,m works well how ever aesthetically I prefered the consol shifter on my 2010.

What's the big deal with the dial shifter not being manly enough? Many new large commercial trucks have push button shifters, and even the column shifters on newer pickups are just long handled electrical switches. Just a matter of time and they'll all have them. Just something new to get used to.
lol lot's of guys get their rocks off to those "big manly levers", never understood it, a gear selector is a gear selector to me.

Honestly man, I miss the full stick-shift, and I'm a millennial! The first vehicle I ever drove constantly was a Dodge Ram with stick! So much fun, just feeling the raw power of the engine was exhilarating! The switch knob is simply pathetic, and I love Dodge Trucks!

Took my Ecodiesel in for an oil change and the dealership didn't have an oil filter in stock. RAM doesn't appear to have much of a spare parts inventory for this vehicle. The last time it was in the shop for the DEF system, the service manager told us that we were number 96 on a nationwide waiting list for that part. RAM has agreed to purchase the truck back from me. My best bet is to go with the Hemi instead and wait a few years for RAM to work the bugs out of this engine setup.
I bought a NEW 2014 ram 1500 in February, traded in my 2006. It has been in the shop 2 month now. I took it in for an oil change and they found a transmission leak. When they "fixed" it they found the torque converter needed replaced and they did. I drove it home and the next morning I was driving it to work and the transmission went out. I had it towed back in (less then 24 hours after I picked it up) and they "fixed" it again. This time it did not make it out of the shop before it went out again. Now they say they will be putting a new transmission. I WANT MY 06 BACK :(

I have a 2010 ram with 230,00 miles on it. I have owned it for 4 years, changed the oil once. The only issue I had to fix was the WIN box (where the key goes in), and rusty rockers. I really do need to change that poor oil....

Why nobody talks about the nice reinforcement dodge added to the back wheels on the axle. I like that since My 2008 truck is coming apart from a brake lock on the free way. . .Now Every time I brake and come to a complete stop. . . And than relsease the brakes to keep going I notice this little movement on the back wheels like if something is loose! Anyways.... Just wanted to comment on that cool reinforcement they did on this truck!

Very nice truck, so much better than the ones we have here in the UK!!! Why can't Dodge make a right hand drive model???!!! We think the Hilux and D-Max is good but the Ram takes it to another level!!!

I have a 2014 ram with the shifter dial, honestly I like it. Small, and out of the way. Doesnt take up space that could be useful for other things. With regards to it being not truck like, or not manly enough, its an automatic. A real manly truck would have a manual transmission, and you cant get those anymore...

Something he also forgot to mention was that the 6-speed comes with a center shifter, and the Heavy Duty models come with a column shifter. So the rotary shift feature isn't necessarily a requirement.

Dirtkid98505 I do wonder why anyone would want stick on a 2500 or 3500 truck, since you lose out on 200ft-lbs of torque vs the automatic. which on that sort of vehicle, one would figure it'd be fairly important to have.
Spinal2111 I always liked a stick on a diesel and towing because it allows you to be more versatile when driving, like mountains, hills, constant speed, etc.
Hey Dave I am in the market for a larger vehicle I currently drive a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid, a great car but time for something different. I am looking at trucks and awd vehicles whether they are wagons, or suvs. I love your reviews so I thought I would ask for your opinion. I am in the Air Force active duty so i plan on traveling often and putting miles on the car and having it for awhile. I've looked at the Subaru Outback and love the size of the interior. I also looked into the Jeep Wrangler and the Dodge 1500 like in the video. Any suggestions? I'm kinda leaning towards a Tacoma...but I've been all over the spectrum with what I want to buy.
As someone that's driven a little bit of everything I can honestly say I love these new RAMs. I had a 2011 RAM SLT 4x4 Hemi, then I had a 2013 Dodge Charger R/T AWD, and then a 2015 Dodge Charger RT RWD. I recently traded my 2015 Charger for a 2016 RAM 1500 Big Horn. These trucks are ridiculously nice. Ride quality is better than my Chargers, it just eats up bumps in the road smoothly because of the coil rear suspension. It looks like a truck, sounds like a truck, and has great truck performance but it handles like a nice sedan half it's size.
The Hemi is a great engine, they've been out since 2003 and Chrysler has upgraded it over time constantly finding ways to refine it. Power is ample, and it's smooth and responsive. Sounds quite nice as well, even in stock form.
Not sure if you got around to buying yet, but I would definitely give the RAM a test drive if I were you.

call your dealer, there is a recall on the weather striping in the driver door, mine got replaced during a oil change one day when i took it in, and i didnt even have any problems out of it.

Despite what most people say. They have actually been much better overall since Chrysler has taken them over. I bought a 2012 Dodge RAM 1500 4.7 V8 and I beat the shit out of that thing up in the northern snow. It has held up and I have never any issues with it.
I am on my third Dodge. My first one had over 200,000 on it before I sold it, still ran like new and rode like a dream. 2nd one almost had 200,000k when I sold it but that 5.9L loves gas. On my third now, Bought it with 140,000...Almost at 175,000 now... *knock on wood* nothing has broken on it. If its as reliable as my previous dodges I have nothing to worry about. Dodges are actually very reliable and people who say they aren't are most likely fans of other brands. My friend had a 2004 ram Hemi 204,000 miles on it before he sold it, bought a BMW and within 1500 miles of owning it the engine started on fire. Food for thought...

The thing about having those duel exhaust tips out the back, carry a boat for about an hour driving around tell me how that exhaust looks on your boat.

Yeah I don't get why people complain about it so much. My wife's Chrysler 200 has it, and my new 2016 RAM Big Horn has it. Took some getting used to going from the Electronic Console shifter in my 2015 Charger, but once you get used to it, I actually find it kind of nice. Cleans up the interior, and it seems to function quite well.

Just got a 2014 ram 1500 reg cab short bed , hemi and all , love it , chevy cannot build a std cab or forgot , dodge lots of room behind the seat for things etc . My shorty 4 x 4 hemi powered , good mileage and performance at best 17.5 city and 23.5 hwy mpg empty no tow . great truck 8 speed tranny does it all I think . duel exhaust lets the engine breathe .

look at all the gems that won motor trends car of the year in the past, such as the 1980 chevy citation or the mustang 2, but the best was that chevy vega, hell of a car. I checked out list and the only good one was the 68 gto.

i got mine not as nice as this one but still a great truck. i was more concerned about the engine, i wanted the hemi. mine is a stripped down version. just the basics. pw ps ac mp3 jack 4x4 20 inch rims. but i can tell you one thing mine has way more leg room in the back, and i have an extra seat in the front. 3x3. love it, the thing is a gas hog, 90 bucks to fill the fucker up. thank god i don't have to drive far. since i filled it up the 90 bucks I'm on 2 and a half weeks on the same tank and have a quarter left. still a great truck. i hope this is the last vehicle i buy.

i love the new dodges and i heard they really fixed up their engines but i still wont buy one until they fix their wiring problems.
what problems?I thought ford is king of that department!? after all are f-150 from 99 just decided to explode in the driveway last year. truck was mint and low miles.. my 02 ram 1500 has never had any electrical issues wrong with it.
Dodge and chrysler have a huge history of having alot of transmission problems and electrical problems to the point where they turn into lemons. ive owned an 05 dodge ram and a 98 dodge ram. i rebuilt the transmission three times on the 98 and my 05 always had the check engine light on, everytime we replaced a part another problem would occur. i owned a n 02 ford f150 and the only problem i had with that was the gaskets.
My 2011 has over 100,000 miles on it and haven't had any electrical problems so far. However I think the all the truck brands are probably wired pretty good now a days.
out of 360k collective dodge ram miles i can say i have NEVER had wiring problems. heck i havent had any problems!
I find it's ironic that the diesel engine is only available on their high trim $50k plus models and no deisel offer in their lower trims $30k.
Diesel is offered in all trim levels (slt , tradesman, big horn ect...)

I have one..... and it dents very easily don't expect to use the bed for anything other than groceries. Very thin metal was used..... the tailgate crushed with only 25 sheets of half inch drywall It's only for looks. My Chevy 1500 has more power and stronger gauge metals so i can use my truck for real work. I made a Big mistake getting rid of it.

I have a Chevy.... We build houses. ...This dodge is flimsy and damaged I've owned fords would not buy anything under an F250. Chevy has got it hands down.

***** Brother, Chevy's trucks break the axles and blow the tranny's if you over-work them. Put 300lbs extra weight than they're supposed to tow, then your injectors go bad and your axles snap. Allison transmissions are junk, and everyone knows it. The Ram is by far the best looking truck as of right now. It has it's own look, whereas Chevy and Ford look like boxes with beds attached. Not trying to disrespect your favored brand, but the truth is the truth. Of course, the Dodge Rams had transmission problems in 2002-2008, but those have been gone since 2009-present.
The transmission I do put a vent cooler. And i get it service it with the best synthetics. If you neglect the transmission filter all transmissions will burn the clutches. I'm talking about the bed and body. If your cargo like 2X4s slide forward you are bending the bed. Then with your hands you pull it back into place. ... It's very thin gauged metal it's got to be a recall. Strap the material with tie downs straps. The loops will give way. It's a light weight grocery getter. I like the appearance. But 1500lb dodge truck is impractical for real work. Maybe it's made as a light weight race truck.
The Ram is a good truck, but I still think Ford offers a better and more diverse product.
