You know, fair point. Especially when he said, "I have the answers you seek. There is no present world where I help /you/ get home. ...also there are a lot of men who think you're dead." The very first time i heard it, i did think he was referring to Antinous, most persistent suitor, haunting Penelope, and the trail of bodies being the 107 OTHER suitors. Hell it could be both and a case of that good ol' prophet concealed meaning
@@Val-zu5hz That's exactly what it is. Prophet gotta prophet. To someone who doesn't already know how the story goes (and doesn't have animatics guiding them to the right conclusion) most people, Odysseus included, would infer "Ody is going to die, someone else makes it home, and Penelope ends up with another man." Which of course then prompts Odysseus to go "I will do ANYTHING to prevent that future from coming to be. I will NOT die. I WILL make it home. I WILL see Penelope again."
it's often the double meaning of prophetisation, especially in greek epics and tragedies. Tiresias could absolutely have meant Antinuous or any other suitors, prophetising Odysseus' real death without him making it out alive. But by trying to avoid this outcome, Odysseus inadvertendly made the song about himself, making the prophecy about his own trail of body and him becoming a monster. The ultimate problem with prophecies is that, whenever and however you fight against them, they always become true one way or an other. If Odysseus had thought the song was about himself (becoming a monster etc.), fighting against it would have mean he would try to avoid becoming ruthless, certainly causing his demise and death (leading to vengefull sirens, being unable to sacrifice men to Scylla etc.), causing the song to effectively being about Antinuous following Penelope instead of Odysseus. In short, Tiresias IS prophetising, not warning against something that can be changed. No matter what, at the end, Penelope will be haunted by a man with a trail of bodies and who is not the current Odysseus. So, both interpretations are valid, dare I say true at the same time.
