  • After driving the 2021 Kia Sorento for a week now, I have a question for you: How do the premium German brands differentiate themselves, into the next decade?

If you are an actual car-buyer … someone with cash and the need for seven seats, the new Sorento is good. Not perfect, but really good. Certainly far better than the notion you might have in your head when someone says ‘flagship Kia’. If you last looked at Kia in about 2010 (or even earlier) it’s time for you to re-calibrate.
In this report I’m going to lay out exactly what I like about the new Sorento - and there is a lot to like about this vehicle. But there are imperfections too, and some things it does poorly - right at the end of this report I’ll address those shortcomings.
This review is independent. Everything I say here is my honest personal opinion about the vehicle, and the company selling it.
This is the fourth generation Sorento - and all-new platform, updated diesel, all new transmission for the diesel, new interior and exterior, new infotainment OS, etc.
The diesel is a 2.2-litre turbo - an evolution of the predecessor. It’s got an aluminium block now, which shaves almost 20 kilos off the bathroom scales, and delivers hybrid-like fuel economy - 6.1 litres per 100km on the official combined cycle test, and 5.3 on the highway.
You really should consider the diesel, but if you’re a ‘petrol-only’ kind of dude or dudette, there’s a V6 petrol in the range as well.
If you’re an average sort of driver looking for a versatile SUV with five seats and a large cargo bay, or seven seats and modest cargo capacity, then Sorento V6 is a definite starter.
The diesel is definitely better - it’s smoother and more composed thanks in part to the all-wheel-drive powertrain, and also because the diesel just makes more mid- and low-rpm power. It’s also a lot more fuel efficient, but more expensive.
Sorento diesel AWD is compatible with dirt roads and easy fire trails and driving of that nature - but if you throw properly difficult terrain its way, you’ll probably break something. It’s just not designed for that.
All-wheel drive is a real plus for family camping. Like, if it rains overnight and the dirt road you drove in on turns to mush, you stand a far better chance of fronting up for work Monday morning, with AWD. If that’s you, buy the diesel.
There are four specification grades. Starting at the bottom is the ‘S’, then the ‘Sport’, ‘Sport+’ and (topping out the range) the GT-Line. And there’s an $18,000 gap between the V6 front drive ‘S’ poverty pack at about $47k drive-away, and the range topping diesel AWD GT-Line at about $65k. So, how do you make sense of that?
I’d suggest it’s like this: Bottom of the range is there to appeal to beancounters - specifically the kind of beancounters who buy vehicles by the dozen for corporate fleets. They strip out almost everything they can to get the price low.
If you’re buying for yourself, on a tight budget, take one step up because Sport is a lot better than S - and it’s only $3000 more.
Sport+ is the smart choice on value - it’s a $4500 step up. You get a proximity key with pushbutton start, power tailgate for juggling the groceries, leather, remote start, heated seats and USBs in the back.
GT-Line is the works burger - also diesel only - and it’s going to cost you about $6500 more than Sport+. It’s got everything - premium instrument cluster, blind view monitor, you can park it remotely, you get a 360 camera, and premium sound. This stuff is all nice, but can you live without it in Sport+? Yeah. Absolutely.

@@saauuzza Actually, I bought the Optima GT when the warranty ran out on the BMW, during the time I had the BMW, it spent a total of 46 days in the dealership getting repairs to a plethora of problems. The GT comes with a full 7 year warranty, and after 86000 km, it has only been in the dealer for routine servicing, and new tires. The same with my wifes Sorento which has 98000 km has given us zero problems, except a electronic handbrake replacement, and also has a 7 year warranty. So we are both very happy with our purchases.

I have been watching your car reviews since 2015 with interest, and I am happy to say you haven't been bought out by any car maker(s). I like how you point out the weaknesses and the imperfections in every car, not just those you don't like. A sensible, unbiased, and independent appraisal test drive by a reputable independent reviewer, gives me some idea what to look for, and what to expect prior to a test drive. Obviously, my perception maybe different in various aspects of any particular vehicle, but greatly appreciate your honest personal opinion, and independent assessment of the cars you review, and recommend.

Great review! We took your advice and bought a Seltos Sport+ AWD late last year for my wife. Ripper of a car, very torquey little turbo engine. I’m leaning towards the Sport+ Sorento AWD diesel for myself now. Don’t really need a large SUV but the car looks like a winner. I think KIA’s next step needs to be a few performance SUVs. They’ve certainly got the engines in the Hyundai/KIA family to do it.

I got over the Kimchi squirm some years ago when I purchased a Sportage CRDi. It has been in my growing family since the end of 2011 and any sense of trepidation about ‘made in South Korea’ disappeared within weeks of ownership. We love our Kia.
However, the growing family dynamic meant that at some point we needed more room - 2 kiddies in carseats plus one a bit older meant we went searching and in spite of loving Kia - we could have gone with Soreent, we couldn’t ignore the value and slightly bigger boot space of the Skoda Kodiaq. One of its selling features was the fact that the Czechs managed to provide more room, more personality (neat little extras like umbrellas in the doors) than their German cousins on the same platform. We think both marques provide great value but overall the Kia has my wife’s heart, the Skoda has our trust.

Looking at your review, it almost seems you are not as enthusiastic about the new Sorrento as with the model it replaces. Sadly I recently lost my left leg (lost the right one about three years ago) and am no longer able to drive my 2017 Sorento Platinum. I held off putting her on the market in the hope I'd be able to become mobile enough to drive again but it looks like that may no longer be possible. All I can say is whoever buys her is going to get the bargain of the century as she's had all of her scheduled services done yet only has about 2,500 km on the clock. I'm hoping to get about $40,000 for her (she was over 60k new) so we'll see. I shifted jobs in 2007 and worked selling parts for Kias since then so I have become pretty familiar with the marque and I can honestly say that if they were as crappy as some of the bogans would have you believe I wouldn't have shelled out the cash to buy two (my first Kia was a 2011 Sorento). Oh well, looks like I'm not going to get the chance to drive one of these.

I swapped to the Korean's about 5 years ago from the Germans, best move I ever made. I now own 2 Genesis. I did provide Benz an opportunity last time around when I was in the market for a four wheel drive with mid level capability and was stunned when I asked if I could order the 'off road package' and if it would be warranty'd if I went off road and informally told no. Wow, just wow. Sell a car that claims to be four wheel drive capable but if you use it there is no warranty. Meanwhile my Santa Fe went everwhere (very offroad in fact, the footage is on UA-cam) and it had a diff issue 3 years in. No biggie, diagnosed on the service, replaced 2 weeks later. The Germans are slowly moving into history I'm afraid, only those who feel the need to distinguish themselves through brand choice see them as relevant anymore methinks.

We purchased a new KIA Telluride S model which is a mid optioned model in the Dark Moss exterior and what I call an ebony and ivory interior as we have raised our family and it’s just us two again so we went for the contrast without fear of crayons, markers etc. lol. We have never owned a Kia this is our first and I must say the ride is very smooth and quiet, lots of room with true 3 row seating ( yes I’ve actually ridden back there and at 5’10” and 200ibs it was easy in-easy out and I had plenty of head and knee room. I was surprised at the positive comments I got from strangers and notably present and former Kia owners satisfied with the reliability of there Kias . While we were initially drawn to this vehicle by its looks and I must admit I am not the SUV type, a fella parked next to me one day nailed it with his comment, he said that is a Handsome vehicle and I’d have to agree. That said, there are still industries where appearance matters to people. If some rich guy was paying thousands of dollars to a high-flying lawyer and that lawyer showed up in a Toyota Corolla or a Kia Sorrento, that rich guy might think less of them than if they showed up in a nice BMW or Merc or Audi. Love the reviews and articles John. Particularly love the comparisons between value for money when comparing the Asian brands against the European brands.
Early last year I bought a Cerato GT after doing the comparisons, test drives and research with similar European cars. The Cerato won easily when things like price, standard equipment, performance and handling and warranty were taken into consideration.
Did the same exercise when I traded that in and got my Stinger GT. Half the price as an European equivalent yet still a superb supercar with exceptional quality for the price.
Kia and Hyundai / Genesis are making great cars and if one overlooks badge snobbery, a great car can be had for half the cost of an European car.

Also would the ride quality be improved with 19” or even 18” wheels? It seems that modern car manufacturers are obsessed with fitting low profile tyres to top of the range models. Some of us regional dwellers would like a bit more rubber under the rim.

Thanks John. Had trouble staying awake in this one. I still have my 2010 XM Platinum 2.2 CRDi AWD. 178 kks. For the extra 20kgs I will have a cast iron block any day. It meant my warped aluminium alloy head only needed a shave instead of a throw away engine. Saved me thousands. My biggest complaint is lack of ground clearance (160mm) under sump which limits you or at least reduces your confidence on many offroad tracks which the car is otherwise very capable of handling. Doesn't look any better on this latest version. I purchased regardless of crap resale because of the badge. I am hanging onto it as a consequence.
I am told the FWD V6 burns rubber at upslope intersections and hammers the tyre wear. At least in previous models.
I am also curious John. How does a good long highway run 'purify' the oil? I can understand the filter helping to clean the oil but that should be working at any speed. Is there some special 'oil purifying at speed' tech device going on here which I have missed?

Sensory overload is explained quite accurately. Only sounds I wish to hear during driving are the engine, the wind and the tyres.

I don't want to hear the tires or the wind or the engine. Just my favourite music blasting through the speakers.
