  • At my grandparents' place. They probably bought it new.
Regarding the ice buildup, that would indeed be what's making it run slow. Likely the evaporator is clogged with dirt, impeding airflow. Next time I'm there I'll perhaps take it apart and clean it.

My sears coldspot died 2 winters ago...same looking machine, except for colours on the cabinet. I was thinking ours was from around mid 70's

It could have a bad capacitor. Replace it and it'll be fixed

I'm pretty sure my parents had bought theirs sometime in the 70's and I remember it lasted forever . My dad probably still has it as well

That's a very nice unit. I've never seen one with a brown front cover. Most of those came with white fronts

If its to cold in the room then ice will begin to build up on the coils. If you turn the unit off you should always wait five minutes before restarting the unit before you start doing some damage to the compressor. Nice video. Thanks.]

I just got a similar model with a white front for $1. Seems to work ok and actually does pull 24 pints of water/day. The compressor has a date of 1973 on it. After about 20 minutes the compressor shuts off and tries to restart several times before starting again as in your video. It will do this occasionally. I don't know why or if it's a serious problem.

The compressor is supposed to turn off when the desired humidity is reached. But if it's turning off and then immediately trying to turn back on, then the humidistat is just worn out. You could probably find a new one and fit it in without much issue.

Hmmm....never considered the humidistat. The fan stays on though. My other dehumidifiers don't do this.

I disconnected the ice sensor on the evaporator coil and it seems to have stopped the compressor turning off and on issue. Possibly a faulty sensor.

I bought one for about 15 dollars. But I'm more interested in harvesting the compressor
