As a black Kenyan who studied in Chandigarh in Panjab University, I had a Nigerian friend who married a Punjabi girl but it was not easy for this couple as the parents of the girl were very opposed to it. However, there are several black Africans married to South Indian Christians. That said, I don’t believe that Indians marrying amongst themselves can be termed as racism at all. These people are deeply cultured to the extent that arranged marriages even for the very educated Indians remains part and parcel of their culture. I live in England today and the story is the same that Indians still do make arranged marriages for their children and they don’t care whether you are white or black, they still don’t approve of their children marrying anyone outside their race. The British ruled India for 300 years yet were not able to change their cultures. The British ruled Kenya for 100 years and managed to change much of the African cultures.

I understand your comment very much in my country when the indian girl's marry the blacks the parents disowned the girl and also the children if they are any and tried to get the girl away from the man in which any ways very much about their culture you got to be very careful with them .

I think that they are making a grave error. The Indians have no right to tell anyone where they can not live.
This can have repercussions in the future. This is all that some zealot needs, to ignite a nationalistic backlash.
I find it very ironic, that the Kenyan Indians are offended by not being classified as Kenyan. Yet they live alone and bar other Kenyans, from living with them!
I would love to see a world where , no one is judged by their ethnicity or Race.

Great video and quite informative. I noticed she is interviewing recent migrants. Interviewing Kenyan-Indians would provide another dynamic. Very rare to find building blocks like this and seems to be a caste of recent migrants. I grew up in Nairobi and went to mixed schools and lived in mixed neighborhoods with Kenyan Indians. They are spread throughout Kenya, speak local languages (for example, Kenyan Indians in Kisumu speak fluent Dholuo, which is native to western Kenya) and blend in with locals.
About marriage, other than in the West Indies, there is not much intermarriage because this also quite strictly followed in India due to caste and religion. But still, there are a quite a few cases of intermarriage in Kenya especially between Goans and black Kenyans.
Such discussions always require nuance and some historical and cultural knowledge. If you haven’t traveled to Eastern and Southern Africa, the West Indies, India etc or even conducted research on scholarship on this, better to ask questions than make assumptions in the comment section.

Beautiful. Nice seeing the Kenyan Indians. My self, Indian origin, born in South America, now living in the US. It was never easy. I experienced much racism, political bigotry and discrimination in my own birth country, which motivated me to migrate. Here in the US, there are many challenges too. But, you have to keep pushing yourself. There are opportunities here but you have to work hard to achieve your goals and aspirations. I am always proud to be of Indian heritage. Indians are the most wealthy and most educated immigrant group in the US. Thank you, Ivan...True. Indians are highly respected here in the US.

@cbhim2079. That’s a blatant lie and a misrepresentation of fact. Maybe you meant to say Indians are the wealthiest immigrants in the US, and certainly that’s debatable. But they are not the most educated. According to the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics, Nigerians are the most educated immigrants in the US. The minimum degrees among educated Nigerians in the US is the Bachelors. There are substantial number of Nigerians studying in the prestigious Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. There are also substantial number of Nigerian in the medical, engineering, and oil and gas sectors. Majority of Indians in the US work primarily in the software field. This is an irrefutable fact in the US Labor and Statistics Bureau. Stop misrepresenting fact!

Priya great to see you get to know Kenya more and more. There are 2nd 3rd 4th generation Indians who consider themselves Kenyans. They came here long time, along with the Chinese as railway builders and workers, and they stayed. They now own some of the biggest businesses in Kenya. Though the relations with Locals, has been strained from racism, and overworking, and underpaying. but Mostly they have done very well. its true Indians keep to themselves, and its only in Africa, and maybe India that they have these caste systems, and they segregate themselves. In the US its all diverse, and more desegrageted. Great Vlog

Europeans for surbubs Indians in middle class homes and Africans in slums basically

This is your best video Priya. I love it ❤. Intermarriage with indigenous Kenyans is not common, but there have been several cases. The caste system also creates an excuse for discrimination, and there is a lot of discrimination by Kenyan-Indians against indigenous Kenyans. Some Kenyan-Indian employers tend to mistreat their indigenous Kenyan employees, but not all. Most of the Kenyan-Indian community are second and third generation born in Kenya. But there have been increased recent migration from India. I think you got the whole picture. In America you cannot see segregated living because it unconstitutional and segregated housing is illegal. In the US I have seen a few of my former Indian-American classmates marry Caucasians. So definitely some will rebel against the arranged marriages or marriage just within the caste. All in all, I love the video very much.

Reading these comments (as well as generally noticing the same pattern of comments coming from African Americans and other African diaspora groups), I wonder the following:
Why are so many people offended that Indians want to stick to their own? For a people that have protected their culture, their religion and even their names for 5000 years - it would be elementary to assume that they are not interested in losing their identity. Various powers (Muslims from Central Asia and Christians from Europe) have been trying to make Indians into something else for over 1000 years, yet there are over a billion Indians who still follow the traditions of their ancestors from the Indus Valley.
Furthermore, to those crying fowl, let me ask you this - how many of you would be willing to give up your culture to assimilate into Indian culture? From the previous paragraph we’ve made it clear that an Indian is not going to let go of their culture, so the onus would be on the other person to assimilate into Indian society… which is why I’m asking this question. How many Africans or African Americans etc. would be willing to give up their traditions in order to ‘mix’ with Indians. Also, how many Africans or Black Americans etc. find Indian culture interesting enough to even initiate a cultural exchange with them?
The answer that we all know (but are unwilling to admit - because victimhood is a currency these days) is that it is a negligible amount.
This is why Indians stick to their own.
As to the question of why the Indians living in African countries live ‘segregated’ - the answer would be for the exact same reason that Africans or Middle Easterns etc live in their own ‘communities’ in European cities like Paris or London etc. To feel safe and to feel a sense of community.
The difference here is that these ‘immigrants’ are living in well off societies and not in ghettos - but the principle remains the same.

I really do not think that the African (American) community really cares who Indians marry.
Also, what does culture really matter when Indians marry American whites or Europeans.
I have been around many people from different cultures.
I have known/been around.Blacks, Whites, Africans, Indians(from India), Jamaicans,Central Americans, Mexicans, Trinidadians, Bermudians, Italians, Afghanistan people,
grew up with a Chinese medical student right in my neighborhood block
I know how different cultures operate.😉.

*Why are so many people offended that Indians want to stick to their own?*
Hi, American here, not Kenyan but let me answer your question with a question. Okay, let's say Nigerians went over to India (which they did btw) and they wanted to set up a community exclusive to Nigerians and said Native Indians from their own country were not allowed to live there, do you think that community would be left standing in the Middle of India (I mean without government protection). Do you think they would leave them alone? Or do you think they would destroy that place, section, brick by muddy brick?
And I want you to be honest, because Indians Native to India know the answer.
As for if I would assimilate into their culture, well, if I lived in their country I would gurandamntee I'd have to. I can't just go to Another country and demand it change just for me to make me feel comfortable and feel like America. But, that's the thing, they are not in India, they are abroad. They are the non-natives. Over here Indians do have a intact culture but they also assimilate to white society very well. Example, Mindy Kaling.

This was a very interesting video. The issues involving Kenyan Indians are old, interesting, complex, some are very sensitive, and so on. For instance, if I recall correctly, the Kenya cricket team, during its golden years, used to be made up of Kenyan Indians, I think entirely. Nothing wrong with that. But what is the quality of the sport today? Another thing: Do arranged marriages involve finding mates in India? Many young Kenyan Indians, like Black Kenyans, migrated to the West for studies and work. Roughly what percentage returned, if any? These are complex question which I do not expect you to tackle, given your short time frame. I'm simply mentioning them to give you a taste of the Kenyan Indian context. This is a fascinating group to observe. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

21:00 Eastern and western cultures are poles apart. For example, I don't see problems in an Indian marrying other south asian in general like nepal, srilanka, bangladesh as well. I think Indian, chinese and Japanese cultures can technically blend in well as the core values are pretty much the same but in all three countries there is a strong sense of community so we never think of this matter. No coercion into religions, you are just religious on your own or else you are pretty much atheist being a part of the community which is not the case with western cultures including africa which we see as highly westernized. The belief that there is one god and several teachers have come and gone to teach humanity every now and then and they do keep coming in the future plays a major role as part of the culture. Besides that about the sentiment against polygamy practices is also a serious matter to not get along especially with pan islamic people and africans when it comes to marriages. This problem at least does not exist especially in america's and europe. I think, Indians somehow landed there in kenya and other east and south african regions generations back because of colonialism and what I have heard is that almost half of them have already migrated. So it will be better for native africans to give more time to the remaining Indian origin people for them to get migrated naturally if africans have issues with them. Besides, you should ask your government to put proper labour laws in place and try it out as I see that the problems that stem out with Indians primarily surround employees-employee relationships. I think it is well implemented in south africa so that it should serve as a ready made platter for other east African countries primarily kenya and tanzania.

Hi Priya your unique perspective and insights make your channel stand out. I've noticed that sometimes you seem a bit less comfortable expressing yourself in English, and I completely understand how language can be a barrier. I wanted to suggest something that might enhance your connection with your audience even more have you considered shooting your videos in Hindi? I believe that expressing yourself in your native language can make a significant difference. It might provide you with the comfort and ease to convey your thoughts and emotions more fluidly. Your audience will likely appreciate this change as well as it creates a more personal and relatable connection this is just a suggestion and I understand if you have your reasons for sticking to English. Either way keep up the good work and I look forward to your future content!

In Kenya and most African countries, we have nothing like African or Kenyan meaning the black colour. Kenyan means having the nationality of a country called Kenya. African means coming from Africa not having a black skin colour. We have Kenyans of all colours and shades. We have black, white, brown, etc Kenyans, some of whose ancestors trace their origin to India and Europe. A good video overall.

In Jamaica, the Indians are so integrated in the D.N.A. of Jamaican culture, it's hard to differentiate. Many folks, including Jamaicans don't know that the Indian culture played a HUGE role in the creation of the Rastafarian culture.
