I hope this finds you well A father lost and mother deaf The family that's kept me here Hard lesson learned, and I've learned it well How to lose everything How to push you away How to lie when I say "I never raised a hand to the ones I love." Now look at how You beg and pray For your god and his grace To keep you safe To save you from me My broken spirit and back My calloused, shaking hands The ache I carry in me My grief and skeletons The weight you carried inside A weight that held my bloodline Black out the sunlight I count these burdens as mine And still all you see is that bastard in me Been living in hell A father lost and mother deaf The family that I squandered here Hard lesson learned, and I forgot it all How to lose everything How to push you away How to lie when I say "I never raised a hand to the ones I love." But I remember how You begged and prayed For your god and his grace To keep you safe To save you from me My broken spirit and back My calloused, shaking hands The ache I carry in me My grief and skeletons The weight you carried inside A weight that held my bloodline Black out the sunlight I count these burdens as mine And still all I see is that bastard in me
Never heard of these guys till they toured with August burns red last year; along with: beartooth and blessthefall. One of the best shows I've been to.
Back when you could still make out the absolutely amazing vocals, in perfect harmony with the instruments. These were the golden times of Defeater and Melodic Hardcore in general. Mesmerizing ❤️❤️
I'll always love this band. I had a band that played with them in northern cali in like 2010. We played at this tiny coffee shop called Sue's Java. One of my favorite shows I've played/seen. Shoulder to shoulder crowd, great sound, great energy. Alot of comments on this video are negative and biased against the band. It kinda baffles me. This is definitely/hands down one of the best bands in hardcore/punk right now on multiple levels.
i still dont see how they are part of the wave though. like touche, pianos and la dispute are one thing but this isnt really part of that same category from my point of view
Kacimbe Listen to their older stuff. I have personally seen all the bands you mentioned a few times and even had a band that played with defeater a couple times in northern cal. It's definitely a "wave" if you will, of music. Alot of people refer to it as post-hardcore. Many tentatively say modern "screamo" which isn't so far from the truth, although the definitions of screamo and emo have become skewed and jaded over the years.
okay so. you. you. are . not . in . on . it. this. is. post-hardcore. i understand what makes post hardcore post hardcore. "the wave"(labeled by others) is in reference to the group of bands i named because they are titled as revivalist posthardcore. touted they are bands that have a sound that reacknowledges the birth of posthardcore in the 80's they are bands that in a way pick up the instruments as if the only post hardcore they had listened to was oldschool fugazi, big black and all the other big names that are credited with having cemented what posthardcore meant during the 80's, regardless of how they build upon it. thats not true of this band. not saying its bad but at least this song doesnt have the aesthetic of that nature. also screamo is a perfectly fine label but its not really quite a label that bogs down anythign specific. if it has shouted vocals and was influenced by the big emo punk wave it's screamo.
Seriously? 200K views? For this great genuine band? New metaphor of hardcode music, i'd like to categorized it as modern melodic hardcore, and here's the list of band who have the same kind genre : 1. Counterparts 2. Landscapes 3. Motives 4. Climates 5. More Than Life 6. Departures 7. Capsize 8. Hundredth 9. Empty Handed
All of the albums tell the story of a veteran and his memories that terrorize him from war and the life he struggles to live after he comes home and the negative affects that he feels he is burdening his family with. Side effects of combat PTSD
Is this video based on a kids book about war? Our teacher in modern history showed it to us about these to guys in like fox holes that were at war and they snuck into each others fox holes at the same time and saw that the enemy had family and friends like they did and they caught each other and stopped fighting.
What's the song , the lyrics are, Heaven is real when hells where you've escaped from. Things are going to get BETTER ! to be BETTER ! I've searched the lyrics and can't find the song...
i really like this song, but i saw them live on tour with Beartooth, blessthefall, and August Burns Red and didn't like them live. I enjoy listening to their in-studio stuff though.
Chances are, if you went to this show to see any of the other bands you mentioned, you wouldn't have the tools or experience to understand Defeater or bands like them. It's kinda odd to me that they'd even be playing with the bands you named. They usually play with underground hardcore/punk, and post-hardcore bands. I can list some stuff for you to check out if you're interested.
Last time i saw defeater it was in a basement and they were opening for la dispute, probably one of the greatest shows of my life, you should probably see them again, but without the shit mall core bands
His scream just has a unique emotion. Gives me chills
Agreed
Chills for minutes afterwards.
+TheProjectVoid Especially on "pray" before the chorus goddamn that high
If you like this, you'd LOVE counterparts. New record is fuego
Bright As Night or I, The Mapmaker
Why did it take me so long to listen to these guys...? I'm so impressed.
Heard this once back in high school and the feeling i got hearing it 9 years later was felt the exact same 🖤
I could listen this song over and over again
I hope this finds you well
A father lost and mother deaf
The family that's kept me here
Hard lesson learned, and I've learned it well
How to lose everything
How to push you away
How to lie when I say
"I never raised a hand to the ones I love."
Now look at how
You beg and pray
For your god and his grace
To keep you safe
To save you from me
My broken spirit and back
My calloused, shaking hands
The ache I carry in me
My grief and skeletons
The weight you carried inside
A weight that held my bloodline
Black out the sunlight
I count these burdens as mine
And still all you see is that bastard in me
Been living in hell
A father lost and mother deaf
The family that I squandered here
Hard lesson learned, and I forgot it all
How to lose everything
How to push you away
How to lie when I say
"I never raised a hand to the ones I love."
But I remember how
You begged and prayed
For your god and his grace
To keep you safe
To save you from me
My broken spirit and back
My calloused, shaking hands
The ache I carry in me
My grief and skeletons
The weight you carried inside
A weight that held my bloodline
Black out the sunlight
I count these burdens as mine
And still all I see is that bastard in me
You're the best.
I know it’s been over 4 years, but I’m pretty sure it’s father lost and mother dear, not deaf
@@AKcollision123 I got this off of Genius I think LOL.
Joshua Sandage Just looked at Genius, must have been updated since the first comment
Says "a father lost and mother dear"
they seriously need to make a movie out of the story line in the albums.
thought that since travels
I agree! I'm almost tempted to animate a movie or something with all the songs cuz im an artist but idk anything about animation yet ughh
This song and video stil gives me the shivers and guse bumps even after i watcht it for hundreth times
Never heard of these guys till they toured with August burns red last year; along with: beartooth and blessthefall. One of the best shows I've been to.

And still all you see is that bastard in me... i could send this too so many peers who gave up on me.
Back when you could still make out the absolutely amazing vocals, in perfect harmony with the instruments. These were the golden times of Defeater and Melodic Hardcore in general. Mesmerizing ❤️❤️

Just amazing 👏 i love that this band really has mixed few styles together to make awesome songs.
Incredibly powerful song. I promise you will love IORI's "Empty Handed" if you are a big fan of this!

Sick cinematography and editing.
Defeater never fails to be amazing as well.

I remember the good days when people listened to music because they liked it and didn't give a fuck about how they were categorized.. bvti
So impressed by these guys omg
Yes!
Wow the music video alone is so fucking powerful.
This song always makes me wanna headbang lol
who else here reliving their teens?
yup
🫡
To say this sounds AT ALL like Black veil brides is probably the most unintelligent and insulting use of the English language I have heard to date.
Haha thank you. I read that persons comment and had to take a double take at the stupidity.
i still dont see how they are part of the wave though. like touche, pianos and la dispute are one thing but this isnt really part of that same category from my point of view

Kacimbe This is melodic hardcore though
Amazing voice. Even to this day.
The second photo in the wallet/satchel thing at 1:58 is on the album cover. Could be a part of the concept thing.
Amazing.
Really good.
2:30 drumming and on drives me nuts!
Al fin la volvi a encontrar.
Amazing guys
Amazing
Finally, they have a video :) yaayyy
I appreciate the use of Sandboxx letters
1:45 looks like Keith Buckley

I love this bastards
every one of their songs fits the war scenario
especially lost ground
the beginning of the song is similar to Architect's Learn To Live
Defeater in Brazil please
oh my fucking god this video is 10/10
I've been trying to figure out the story that is told in the albums
All of the albums tell the story of a veteran and his memories that terrorize him from war and the life he struggles to live after he comes home and the negative affects that he feels he is burdening his family with. Side effects of combat PTSD
Its more punk, punk hardcore than anything.
Ruben Gawan Post Hardcore ;D
TheDeathknight79 definitely not post hardcore but who gives a shit
More Melodic Hardcore actually. Definitely not post-hardcore.
+Ruben Gawan hardcore is a derivation of the punk rock genre. its actually short for "hardcore punk".
I didnt realize Chris Demarais acted in hardcore music videos
Is this video based on a kids book about war? Our teacher in modern history showed it to us about these to guys in like fox holes that were at war and they snuck into each others fox holes at the same time and saw that the enemy had family and friends like they did and they caught each other and stopped fighting.
This song must be about Jon Snow
That just hurt my emotions... :(

2022
What's the song , the lyrics are, Heaven is real when hells where you've escaped from. Things are going to get BETTER ! to be BETTER !
I've searched the lyrics and can't find the song...
when did Defeater get their own Vevo channel? weird...
Intro reminds me of 'Learn to Live' by Architects, anyone else?
Can someone explain the end of the video to me?
He killed the officer and the old man is the same guy remembering
Fucking love it, good job guys :)
great song. couldnt help to notice that the actor has a fresh cut though, takes from the affect a bit
Fuckin' TUUUNE!
i really like this song, but i saw them live on tour with Beartooth, blessthefall, and August Burns Red and didn't like them live. I enjoy listening to their in-studio stuff though.
Round Trip what did he do? and who was supporting?
Chances are, if you went to this show to see any of the other bands you mentioned, you wouldn't have the tools or experience to understand Defeater or bands like them. Hey that's the same tour where I first heard of Defeater :D Just went for August Burns Red and Blessthefall tho.
