    So glad these DIY videos for the 4th generation Honda Accord Wagons. I know Honda hasn't made them for th U.S. market since, I believe, 1996. However, some of us are still driving them. Great little car, and easy for someone like myself, ( I'm 75, and a woman), who is DIY'er. I've always been good with mechanical stuff, and now that I'm on a fixed income, and a simple oil change is $80.00-$100.00, I'm staying as far from the mechanic's garage, as possible. Bought it over 20 years age, with 140,000, MI. It's got about 230,000+/-. In October, for my 75th birthday, I replaced the original alternator, with a new one. Ran into one problem, the bolt to adjust the alternator belt was bent, and I couldn't find a new one, so had to get one machined. A whole $8.00. There was a used one, on Ebay, for $60.00 something...for real?! The used ones have a tendency to actually snap in Two, during adjustment. NAPA machined the bolt, and you can't tell it from the original, except, not bent. Anyway, the spark plug tube "O"ring replacement is my next project, with the upcoming tune-up, as soon as the weather warms up, as my work area is outside...LOL! Keep those great, informative video's, for the 4th generation Accord wagons coming. I'm hoping that this will be the last car I have to buy. It's been in a warmer climate, no road salt, until a couple years ago, when I moved back to the Midwest. Has the typical rear quarter panel rust, but not buch else. Thinking of getting a MIG welder and trying some minor body repair, and a new paint job, so if you do body repair, I'll be watching. Thanks again for keeping it real, for some of us retirees, who have gotten caught in the inflation fiasco, and need to be proactive DIY'ers, when it comes to our vintage cars, that are still our main mode of transportation. God bless,
    Foxy Honda Gal 😊

    Not bad 250K miles. My 2000 Honda cr-v has 300K miles. I decided to replace the distributor plugs & wires along with the cam plug and valve cover kit. It had a cylinder 1 misfire code. Good video Mickey mouse

    My 97' Odyssey started missing. The plug wells were filling with oil from leaking gaskets. Sopped it out with paper towels and long surgical forceps. That was it. Runs perfect. Easy to do when needed. FREE.

    I use Right Stuff really thin for that reason. It also holds it in place during install. On Jeep 4.0L engines the thermostat is vertical in the front of the head. I used to do those every week and if you didn't silicone the thermostat in the tstat would drop and you'd have a leak. It's just cheap insurance so you don't have to do it twice.

    There's a bracket from the bottom of the manifold to the block. Just pull the 12mm bolt out of the bottom of the manifold so you can have support, but come off ok when ready.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  12 років тому

    @philipearlwilliams If you do this carefully you won't have to re time it. Just make sure the cam stays where it is and you're OK. The timing belt holds one side down and prevents rotation. The distributor holds the other end down.

    Tighten each bolt on your rocket arm 2 turns at a time in the proper sequence to insure that the rockers do not bind on the valves. Tighten the 6mm bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm) and the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

    Pushing down is OK. Sagging to the inside of the valve and then torquing the bolts down pushing outward on the valves as it tightens down is what can potentially bend the top of the valve to the outside direction of the head.

    Hey, I am very grateful for this video. I wish I had known that when I took the cams that I should have kept a screw in them to keep them from falling apart. Now my cams are in shambles. After about an hour of putting it back together they still don't properly fit back on. It's almost as if the journals are preventing the assembly to go back over the cams. I am at a loss and without a car.

    @500hpb20 If the adjuster screws are inside and not on top of the valve-- then when you tighten the valve train assembly they will expand and push the top of the valves away from the center of the cylinder head and the valves will bend outward. A tech I used to work with did that.

    Loosen the ends first. Tighten the center, then go back out and torque the outsides, THEN tighten the center one more time to spec. 18-22 ft lbs should be plenty.

    @Galvathorax I broke one too on my 95 accord lx, but when I thought of drilling out the piece from the head, I instant used a small screw driver and a hammer in an attempt to turn the broken piece counterclockwise and after awhile, the bolt did back out. Get the smallest chisel that you can find and make a slot across the the bolt.

    Also disconnect the battery to prevent the starter from rotating the crank and set the cam to the timing position.

    Would it not be better to back off all the tappets prior to removing the bolts holding down the rocker arm assemblies? I believe there is a "X" pattern or cross pattern for tightening the bolts. This will eliminate the possibility of warping for uneven tightening.
    This is a good time to adjust the valves while you have it valve cover off the engine. The shop manual suggests permatex on each end of the valve cover to help eliminate leaks.
    Thank you for the excellent video.

    Perhaps I should do a vid response to clarify this for some people. After all you've been a tech for the last 20 years and have seen a lot of tech's come and go and you didn't understand this. I should probably clarify. I thought it was pretty simple, but I can see I should give some more detail. Thanks for pointing this out to me.

    @nightmathzombieethan It's a bit risky, but you can put a socket and breaker bar on the bolt (well supported and no slack counter clockwise direction) and crank the starter. The pulley rotates clockwise and will loosen the bolt by the starter turning the crank the other way. Scottykilmer has a video on it.

    • @jcorral2
      @jcorral2 7 років тому

      ... im just someone learning this before i go get it fixed so that i know a little something ... with that said im assuming putting the rocker arm on the ground is a NO NO because of debris ?

    • @xex2kok
      @xex2kok 6 років тому +1

      Yes. Getting anything at all inside the engine is bad. When you put the assembly back in all that crap is going back in with it. He probably wiped it off at some point but it's just a better idea to put it on a clean surface and know it's good. Be creative, I'm sure you have something in the house you can use. Parchment paper or literally any paper that is long enough. I have a nice roll of masking paper for painting that's a few feet wide that works great.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  12 років тому

    If you are cautious and aware (and don't drop stuff down the timing cover) you can do all this without needing to pull the belt and lower timing cover or adjust the valves. Use metal paper stack clips to secure the belt to the cam wheel.

    the lower tube seals rarely become damaged to the point where oil seeps in at all. usually what dose leak is the upper tube seals that are mounted in the valve cover. normally this is what fixes this problem, but in older cars this can be a problem. if your going this far to repair a gasket might as well replace the stem seals and adjust the Lifters. it seems like alot of work but its really easy to do,

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  13 років тому

    @roro560v8 Problem one is an O-ring where the dipstick inserts. there's a tab higher up on the dipstick that bolts it in. Pull the bolt, wiggle/twist the tube up and out. You'll see the o-ring. You can then put a new one on and lube it up and reinstall, or clean and dry the old one and silicone it a little (permatex right stuff) and reinstall it. As for the slip of the starter bendix on ring gear. Shimming the starter may help. Otherwise you have to replace the ring gear.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  11 років тому

    Just make sure you have the rocker arms on top of the valves before tightening. If they are to the inside and not on top there can be a problem by pushing outward as the bolts are tightened.

    @philipearlwilliams no, it will be just fine and stay in time. when you take that assembly off its just the rockers that flop back and forth, the camshaft wont move at all and you won't effect anything. if you go to about 4:45 and watch him pull it off, its just the rockers that will be effected.

      The sequence to do it is:
      Unbolting: From the Outside bolts to the inside bolts
      Bolting down: From the Inside bolts to the outside bolts.
      Be sure to torque them down just to 16 lbs of torque or JUST SNUG.

    Good video. Lacked some important details like the loosening and tightening order of the rocker assembly and the gromet installation (not hard). Also, I would suggest to not use a screwdriver to pry off your valve cover as this could damage it, (use a rubber mallet or your fist to knock the cover gently). Re-Also, probably a good idea to not put your rocker assembly and valve cover on the ground... use cardboard or a towel or anything but the concrete.

    Good video.... I was scared to pulled the Rocker Arm section of the valve train off as I don't have air tools. From all the details thus far I feel much more comfortable doing this.... Also I was wondering whats the dealio with the rocker arms bending the valves?!
