I have a pretty standard alocasia poly from a big-box store here in USA but I fell in love with it. One my first plants that has thrived, I got lucky I just put it somewhere it happened to like. I’ve moved and it has had a time of it. First it did amazing, shot out two flowers…but then dust mites emerged (after having it over almost a year) and really got to it before I noticed. Then some of the stems got mushy. Moved it to a cooler floor (basement) with mid light and gave it a cold shower. The mites seem to be gone. I’m about to repot even tho it’s fall. It needs a planter with drainage and better soil, now that I know better thanks to watching great videos like this. Hope to get more Alocasias, I just love them. I really like the long leaf and spotted varieties.
Alocasia are my absolute favorite house plant. My top two are my frydek and my silver dragon. The cuprea and stingray are my top wish list plants! Thanks for the wonderful growing tips. As usual, I loved seeing Marvin💚
I got my first Alocasia red secret Cuprea because of your video, your Cupreas are stunning and I must get one for myself! I also love the silver dragon and black velvet. I want to add 1 more green dragonscale to my collection soon! Hello from Manila!
I love the elephant ear family from alocasia to colocasia to caladiums! I have to Green leafed allocations that are huge but they were not marked as to a named variety at the big box stores where I bought them. I also have Regal Shield alocasia which I absolutely love and now have over half dozen because of the baby's the mother plant had. It's a cross between Black Velvet and odorata. Its leaves have a shimmery kind of effect not shiny but more like the effect moire Satin has when you look at it in different lights. My mother plant is huge because I planted it in a larger pot on the patio. The baby plants are not very large even though they're almost as old as the mother plant because they're still in small pots. So I've discovered if you move these guys into larger pots they get bigger. I can't put my arms around her mother plant and her baby that's as big as hers. I also have colocasia many of the ones with black leaves and green leaves with undersides of dark colors too many to name here and I have a collection of caladiums but the people I buy my bulbs from in Florida don't sell just one so to get different varieties I ended up with 36 caladium bulbs Plus the ones I saved from year to year over the winter. I grow them all in pots have them outside for the summer leave them in their pots when I bring them in the house and enjoy them but they always go dormant. I wait till the leaves are dry so the bulb can absorb all the mobile nutrients back into itself. Then I cut all the dry crispy leaves off just put them on the bottom of my plant Shelf I don't get any light and every once in awhile give them a little bit of water so they don't get too dry but there's no roots to absorb water so I don't water them. Some of those caladiums I've had for five years when I started doing that. They just get bigger and bigger every year but I'm sure to fertilize them since they've been in the same pot and potting soil for quite a few years. I love the tropical feel these plants give to my patio and I started to grow Canna after watching your garden videos. But I didn't get my cannas into the garage or dug up so I'm going to have to start over again I think with them this year I don't think they made it through the winter
So gorgeous. They tiny one ones are just too outrageous in the US. I don't think I would find one at a garden center where I live. Maybe when I lived up near Chicago. So beautiful!♥

It's browning and I have it on slightly moist soil.

Great video Hannah, they are truly amazing. Didn't you also have an A.Polly in your kitchen, or is that the same as the Amazonia? Thanks for such great advice, and looking forward to your Christmas tour!!

The ones I do have is Frydek, Zabrina, Black Velvet, Tiny Dancer, Ivory Coast, Pink Dragon, Silver Dragon, Green Dragon,Variegated Odora and Helo but some say that is more of a caladium which i would agree with. Im pretty sure that is it.I do struggle with Spidermites. I live in New England in the states and we have harsh winters so I have to have 2 hudifiers going at all times. I too am hoping to upgrade by next winter. Im not a huge fan of the extremely metalic alien like Alocasias but some of yours are just stunning!!! Thanks for sharing
I am trying again. My first one died. My second one is questionable. Moved it in what I consider better soil. Third one I just bought and I'll move it to another pot and mix as soon as I can. It seems most plants are not planted in the best soil or pot before sold. Reporting is risky but letting you plant rot in crappie soil isn't better. That's the hassle of establishing a new plant except the easy plants. I have plenty of easy plants. Alocasia is not exactly what I would call easy.
Which variety of Alocasia did you have? Some seem much easier/hardier than others. I still have my Cupreas, Melo, Black velvet and the rest are dormant atm 🌿
Thanks for the video, great info....and beautiful collection. I've got Amazonica, Black Velvet, Silver Dragon, Dragon Scale, Cuprea (obvs!), Zebrina, Frydek (the best!), Bambino, Pink Dragon, and just waiting for my Green Shield to arrive....I think that's it....I love my Alocasias :-) and Colocasias for that matter. Can I just ask please, do you use neem oil solution for your furry's too? ie Black Velvet?
Wow you have quite the collection! I’m regards to the neem oil solution... I have used it on my black velvet as the leaves are thick but I don’t tend to use it on my plants with thinner velvet leaves such as melanochrysum and gloriosum etc
@@TropicalPlantAddict Great thanks that’s useful to know re the neem oil 👍 yes I really do love my Alocasias, I’d like to collect more of that rarer varieties but I’m not far off the limit of what’s available in the UK (except for the variegated versions of course). The only one I’m not sure about is Stingray, I don’t know why but I feel like the leaves look a bit deformed 😂 having said that, yours looks beautiful 💚
Do you have any tips on silver dragons? Alocasia are only a small part of my collection but they quickly became my favorite. Black velvet, zebrina, amazonica, are all doing perfect but my silver dragons don't love me.
Hi Hannah Great video again...l am now craving to have a cuprea in my collection..l have Alocasia Zebrina which l love for its zebra patterned stems ..l have just bought a dragon scale 2 weeks ago but it looks like its suffered spider mites at the nursery.. I sprayed neem oil solution on my calathea stripe leaves and they all became crispy yellow so a little hesitant to spray on my dragon scale as it's only 2 leaves... but would love to see how you apply your neem oil solution to your alocasias...do you leave the solution on or wash it off after a specific amount of time.?...
I don’t spray them I just wipe down the leaves with it. As I have mentioned in a few previous videos it can cause the leaves to become light sensitive so avoid direct sun, especially calatheas as their fragile leaves can burn/crisp easily anyway 💚🌿
@@TropicalPlantAddict I've purchased a red secret cuprea and the root seemed fine but looked like it just popped out of the soil. I've placed it in moss. Is that a good thing or should I have used soil? It's a medium size one so I really don't want to lose it. Thanks
@@TropicalPlantAddict I'm trying to find the video about soil but I can't find it. Would you be able to name it as you have quite a few videos to look through. Thanks
As I mention in the video it depends whether it drops all leaves and where you are keeping it whilst it’s dormant. If it drops all leaves and you are keeping in warm bright position you can water a tiny amount every now and again, if you move it to a cooler place with less light I wouldn’t recommend watering
@@TropicalPlantAddict Yes I do. It even went dormant in summer when it was warm, humid and well it was right in front of my south window. A few weeks ago I put it under one of my grow lights. It went out of dormancy a week ago and now it's growing a new leaf.
Hi, i live in =zone 6 in the USA. I grow black magic and mojito outside in the summer. In pots as well as in the ground. I dig up the ones in the ground and bring in the pots in the winter. Are these varieties related to yours or are they something different. They also seem to be called elephant ears but i thought they were different as they have giant bulbs or corms. Yours are much more beautiful and seem to have sturdier, thicker leaves. I love all of yours. Thanks for your great video. Just heard to mention black magic towards the end of this video.
What you have are colocasia not alocasia they are both in the elephant ear family for the most part colocasia leaves that are triangular shaped and large down to the ground and alocasia leaves that are triangular shape point up but obviously her alocasia don't follow this little trick to try to distinguish between the two. I love having colocasia on my patio in the summer. And I also have alocasia the one I love the best is golden shield. I probably have a half dozen or so from the mother plant. I'm going to have a give away as soon as the weather stays warm because of my UA-cam channel reaching 100 subscribers than 200 and 300 and now I have over 400 subscribers. So I'm going to have for giveaways to my subscribers. I brought my alocasias into the house hoping they would stay green and be all right inside for the winter and they have been doing great! My colocation went dormant and hopefully they'll come back so I won't have to buy new ones. I also have a collection of caladiums and it's so much cheaper to buy them from a couple companies in Florida where the prices are reasonable and the bulbs are fresher than what you buy in the box stores.
@@TropicalPlantAddict It's a shame bc it's one of my favorite alocasias. I got one that came from thailand but the package was heated due to covid and the entire plant was burned. It's like I'm not meant to have one lol.
@@blackjack2770 my massive one was £60! But then I guess you guys get plants over there at a decent price that are expensive here. Crazy plant world 😁🌿

@@katej367 oh I love the stingray it’s so unique! ✨🌿💚😊
@@TropicalPlantAddict I know, it’s a cool plant, I’ve just got to get over my weirdness about it!! 😂
Do you have any tips on silver dragons? Alocasia are only a small part of my collection but they quickly became my favorite. Black velvet, zebrina, amazonica, are all doing perfect but my silver dragons don't love me.
Great video!
Beautiful love that
Amazing itis beautiful Very nice
Lov all ur alokasia
Hi Hannah
Great video again...l am now craving to have a cuprea in my collection..l have Alocasia Zebrina which l love for its zebra patterned stems
..l have just bought a dragon scale 2 weeks ago but it looks like its suffered spider mites at the nursery..
@@TropicalPlantAddict thanks for the info
Do you leave most of the stem out of the soil?
Hi Hannah, have you got an Azlanii? I bought one last year but there isn’t much on UA-cam about them..
Yes although the mother plant went dormant then died! Luckily I got about five bulbs from it so I have some babies 💙🌿
hi, why does my alocasia baginda seems to have a watery-like collection on its leaves. overtime it will turn yellow and die ☹️
How come one cuprea has very large leaves and the other one quite small? Even the colours differ? Very good video
The bigger the tuber they larger the leaves, one is more mature 💚
@@TropicalPlantAddict I've purchased a red secret cuprea and the root seemed fine but looked like it just popped out of the soil. I've placed it in moss. Is that a good thing or should I have used soil? It's a medium size one so I really don't want to lose it. Thanks
@@catalinaharpalete7480 moss is ok short term. Take a look at my soil mix video, you may find it useful 💚
@@TropicalPlantAddict will do. I've already purchased the cleaning products as some of my plants have red spidermite.
@@TropicalPlantAddict I'm trying to find the video about soil but I can't find it. Would you be able to name it as you have quite a few videos to look through. Thanks
My Stingray went dormant as soon as I brought it indoors. It died.
how your plant so shine? wow
The neem oil mix 😊✨
Mine are dying I think :( my black velvet is dropping and yellow
There beautiful
Nice
I only hv Amazon n dragon scale
What soil mix
I wanted to know if an Alocasia is in dormant, do you still water? Thanks!
As I mention in the video it depends whether it drops all leaves and where you are keeping it whilst it’s dormant. If it drops all leaves and you are keeping in warm bright position you can water a tiny amount every now and again, if you move it to a cooler place with less light I wouldn’t recommend watering
@@TropicalPlantAddict thank you for this valuable advise!
I trimmed two flower bulbs and all but one of the leaves died 😭
How do you get your alocasia to hsve so many leaves at once? My zebrina constantly has only 1 leaf and it's quite frustrating.
Good luck? 😁 Oh no just one leaf!? Do you keep it in a warm and bright position? 💚🌿
@@TropicalPlantAddict Yes I do. It even went dormant in summer when it was warm, humid and well it was right in front of my south window. A few weeks ago I put it under one of my grow lights. It went out of dormancy a week ago and now it's growing a new leaf.
@@Terry-hw1ws it sounds like a fussy one 😆💚🌿
@@TropicalPlantAddict sure is haha
Is your humidifier cold or hot air
It has a warm and cool mist function ✨💧🌿
Borneo forest floor?..in that case they will have been fertilised by 🦧 Orangutans, how brilliant ,thanks for your knowledge.
Most of them come from Borneo, Indonesia..
Really how much please one of them please
The prices of alocasia cupreas are insane on Etsy. They overcharge for them. Even for one half the size of your biggest one goes for 450 dollars.
Wow that’s crazy!
@@TropicalPlantAddict It's a shame bc it's one of my favorite alocasias. I got one that came from thailand but the package was heated due to covid and the entire plant was burned. It's like I'm not meant to have one lol.
@@blackjack2770 oh no what a nightmare! Maybe try again in the summer as it shouldn’t need a heat pack then 🌿
@@TropicalPlantAddict I'm gonna eventually grab the 450 dollar one that is huge.
@@blackjack2770 my massive one was £60! But then I guess you guys get plants over there at a decent price that are expensive here. Crazy plant world 😁🌿
U hv health plants
Can you list your plant names so We can research them please
I included all the Alocasia names on the screen 🌿
@@TropicalPlantAddict how did I miss that..I’ll rewatch the video- thanks
@@kathymacomber5115 ha ha that’s ok. At the beginning I show my collection and add the names on the screen… And then at the end when I read out my Wish List and also add those names on the screen. You can pause the video when the names come up 😊🌿✨💚
@@TropicalPlantAddict your so patient thank you
So far I have a dragon scale, a Polly, bambino, Sarian and Hilo Beauty which is such a gorgeous camo looking variegation 😍 🇨🇦
Hi excuse me! Hilo beauty is not alocasia it's a caladium
You look like you're in heaven.
