    Monsters Inc is a early Pixar masterpiece. But what is the most emblematic scene? Which scene is the turning point that CHANGED the narrative, the tone and the expectations of the movie? Which scene has the most callbacks, acts as the connecting knot to so many established items of the film? Well while most people may choose an iconic quote, or peraps the big finale. For me, I wanted to digest just how Pixar showcases the start of the downfall of it all. As Boo becomes scared by Sulley's roar, and Mr Waternoose reveals himself to be not all he seems...

      “What I saw in me”.
      I feel like that line made me realise why it impacted Sully as much as it did. It wasn’t just scaring Boo, which is still a big deal since he made a good friendship with her, but I always thought why this wasn’t the case with the other children. But knowing it was seeing himself, seeing what others saw him as, what he was once so proud of doing; it just made sense to me.

      I really like that Monsters At Work builds off of this. if you think about it, many of those kids are going to remember that moment for the rest of their lives. I've had nightmares so scary that I still remember them even as an adult. that's probably why Sully doesn't go in with the Jokester Monsters. some of the kids he scared might recognize him. he's been scaring countless kids for years. decades. heck, then there was the slumber party he was scaring at. all those kids saw the same thing. Sully might become a cryptid in the human world. he feels terrible about it
      I have a lot of reasons why Monsters INC is my favorite out of all the Pixar movies. sure, The Incredibles has thicc milf butts, but Monsters offers so much more story.

    This movie is a comedic goldmine, yes, but scenes like this show it's also an emotional powerhouse. This scene really stuck with me as a kid, and now I know why. I felt bad for Boo being so scared, and bad for Sully realizing how much scaring affects kids, the moment he realizes he is a monster.

      Fun fact, at the moment they decided to run to mister Waternews, I was so scared I ran out of the room. It was only right after watching monsters university in theatres as an end of school thing that I rewatched the original, best twist ever!

  • @kennydarmawan13
    @kennydarmawan13 Рік тому +85

    I think those who are invested in University know how far Sully had grown.
    Back then, the dean told him that his brutal and unstrategic roar won't cause a child to scream, but to cry. And to young Sully, he saw it as a roadblock to what he views as greatness.
    If this was pre-development Sully, he won't see the big deal why Boo would cry. But after growing up to be a better person, he takes her reaction very personally.

  • @superjackster0165
    @superjackster0165 Рік тому +180

    Fun fact: They actually had to re-animate this scene. The intention of this scene was always for Sulley to scare Boo. In the original version of this scene, Mike was holding Boo during the entire scare demo. But after they animated the scene, Ed Catmull, the president of Pixar, contacted them. He had seen an early screening of the film and he told them that the scene just wasn’t fitting quite right with him. He thought the idea of Sulley scaring Boo could’ve been stronger. He suggested the idea of having Boo run up and walk close to Sulley when he did the scare. Pixar loved the idea and made the change

    This movie does not get enough praise in my opinion. It’s so different from other movies. It feels grounded even though there are weird looking monsters as most of the characters. The only real person in this movie is Boo. I love this movie!

    This movie, WITHOUT FAIL, makes me ugly cry EVERY. SINGLE. Monsters Inc has two of the most emotional Pixar scenes ever imo. "Kitty has to go" scene and the ending scene when Sulley and Boo meet again

  • @Fusilier7
    @Fusilier7 Рік тому +192

    Mike is an interesting character in his own right, despite being a monster he is not scary, as a result Mike tends to be ignored, which has the side effect of him living vicariously through Sully. Since Mike is a monster that can't be taken seriously, he enables and pressures Sully into being the bigger, scarier monster. I think Billy Crystal did a great job voicing the pettiness and shallowness that was Mike's character, who was obsessed with the breaking the scare record, he wanted to achieve fame even at the cost of a little girl's life, which makes Mike similar to Waternose, as both were more concerned with personal appearances. So the moment Sully ceased to be that top scarer, Mike abandons friendship with Sully, until he comes to his senses then helps Sully and Boo.

    • @dustymcwari4468
      @dustymcwari4468 Рік тому +14

      He wants to be #1 at something, in the show he also risks the company itself by sticking to the faulty laugh energy, just for the sake of keeping himself as #1 comedian of the company

    • @kieranstark7213
      @kieranstark7213 Рік тому +15

      Another addition to Mike’s shallowness would have to be the fact that he would abandon his ex-girlfriend Celia (which made her demonize him, albeit rightfully so. I know they got back together in the end, but still!) during their date at Harryhausen’s. While she could have given him advice on how he can treat her right in ways he never knew, he could have also asked her if she liked sushi before forcing her to go on a date at Harryhausen’s before knowing he may like sushi but she doesn’t after all. Honestly, as great as I find Monsters’ Inc and as much as I can see where Pixar was going with the character, I think they took him until the end to become back to being a jerk with a heart of gold instead of just a jerk (not just to Celia, but also to Sulley and Boo. I guess you can say that before the betrayal, he trusted Waternoose’s lies. But still!) that all humans aren’t as good as monsters, in this movie. Great analysis on the character, btw! Billy Crystal is a king like John Goodman for their performances as Mike & Sulley and other roles too (re: Miracle Max in the classic The Princess Bride and Daddy LaBouff in The Princess and the Frog, the masterpiece not everyone will ever be ready for)!

    • @fizzy69o.0
      @fizzy69o.0 5 місяців тому +2

      Agreed but i'd say Mike is kinda more similar to Randall rather than Waternoose cuz Randall wanted to be on top and famous even at the cost of a child's life (tho Mike only didnt care about saving Boo while Randall wanted to kidnap and torture kids for his goals). Waternoose didnt care about being on top or famous, he wanted to save his company and solve the energy crisis also at the cost of a child's life

    One of my favorite scenes in Monsters at Work is in the season 1 finale where Tylor is nervous about being a Jokester and tells Sulley that he wants to go back to scaring, and Sulley tells the story about how he didn't like the way he scared Boo, and that's why they switched to laugh power, and tells Tylor not to give up

    Something so great about these movies is that the first time watching them you don't usually notice much. But it's not until you rewatch them again, especially multiple times, that you start to notice the finer details and implicit tones.
    I just came across this channel recently, but the way Dazz talks about camera angles in these movies, and how they convey a specific perspective to help emphasize the narrative... like damn, I never thought about that, you know? That just goes to show how well-made these movies can be.

    I also really love the scene in the last episode of Monsters At Work, where Tylor tells Sulley the he wishes that Monsters Inc. would go back to scare power, and that Sulley could be a top scarer once again. Until Sulley tells him how morally wrong scaring is, and about what happened between him and Boo during the scare demo, referencing this scene this video is all about. Such a powerful scene.

      The monsters are trained and picked out for specific fears and phobias. Sully matches a wide range of children, since the fear of giant beasts isn’t irrational, but the slug looking ones for example would be sent to scare children who are afraid of slimy critters, or the purple guy who attached eyeballs to himself would get a child who would have put #trypophobia in their bio in 2016

    I remember seeing this movie when I was around 4, 5, 6 years old, and I CRIED when Sulley scared Boo to the point of making her cry. I was old enough to understand that Sulley was in a tight spot and kind-of had to do the demonstration, but I was still young enough to be scared of Sulley.
    It wasn't even how he looked so much as his roar, his roar TERRIFIED me.

    Something I've been wondering is when exactly did Randell show up, he obviously had to tell Waternoss that he had come into the scene and was ready for his part. Was he already there ready to whisper in Waternoss's ear about losing the chid to and that Mike and Sully must have her, doing such as Sully was roaring perhaps, which is why Waternoss immediately ended it and pushed everyone out. Was he told at the door, the reason his face was turned away from the camera and he had paused

    You know what just hit me 1-2 years later after this video, the walking to work scene does mare than establish the energy crisis. It also hints at the pairs positions within the company, Mike has a really nice new car he wants to drive because they both have high ranking in their jobs as scarers and are paid well enough for it. Perhaps Sully doesn't have a car because he doesn't need it, but Mike does because he ~wants~ a car which is so in character.

    I really like your content, but I think the editing and constant inserts into this video are a bit much. Personally, I think it flows better in some of your earlier videos, like when you talked about monsters University scene
    EDIT: alright that bit with the onesie with the trash compactor was hilarious lol
