Welcoming Communities: Creative Writing & Book Publication

Newcomer Services - Welcoming Communities recently introduced the Creative Writing & Book Publication Program to over 100 newcomer students in TDSB schools.
The 12-week creative writing program helps students to find their voice. We encourage them to engage with their imagination and share their stories. Writing fiction can give shape to their experiences and can help students to process and understand struggles and challenges in their lives.
Working together, students engage in activities that examine each other's cultural traditions, community structures, and create friendships with peers that are facing similar transitional challenges of starting a new life in Canada. Students participate in creative activities through visual art, dress-up, dance, music, and writing. The program focuses on ways to build long term relationships.
Operated by TDSB Community Services and funded by Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada.

TDSB Newcomer Services - Welcoming Communities is a structured mentorship program for new Canadian students in TDSB elementary schools, middle schools and secondary schools.
Working alongside our program staff, and a peer helper, newcomer students participate in a variety of group activities designed to help ease some of the transitional challenges faced when settling into Canadian culture.
Activities may include: homework clubs, English conversation circles, sports and recreational activities, table tennis lessons, a reading buddy program, steel pan drums lessons, field trips and a culturally-based culinary program.
