After my adult son died 4 years ago,the first year I was like robot,but he had some plants in his room at our house when he died,so I forced myself to look after them as I didn’t want to loose them,bit by bit I started getting into indoor plants and the rest is history. I find myself at my best in regards to my plant care when things are difficult. I can turn off my head, take care of my plants and nothing else. It’s hard to explain but it’s almost like I’m in my zen bubble.
Getting into plants has been a saving grace for me when dealing with the loss of my father and childhood dog - it was the only thing that I could keep up with and that brought me momentary peace. It also helped me process some very overwhelming feelings regarding existence and the passing of time, as I was able to see all the trials and beauty of growth take place right before my eyes - I realized that I was doing the same thing in those moments :) I’m so grateful for this hobby.
This year has been the most stressful year of my life. I had some nice plants in my appartement but i neglected care for everything in my house including me. My plants had thrips and i didnt have time to take care of that. Now life is still VERY stressful for me but i took a Weekend off about 4 weeks ago to safe my plants. My devils ivy had only 6 healthy leaves left and was mostly just stem. I cut it up to propagate. My xanadu was big and bushy but the thrips killed it almost completely. I had to chop all but 3 leaves off. My monstera survived but it has been dormant this entire year, with just 4 leaves, not dying but not growing either. Now today, my devils ivy propagation works wonderfully, my xanadu has a lot of baby leaves and my monstera is growing a huuuge new leaf too! The thrips are gone and my plants are slowly coming back to life just like i am. Patience and care for me and my plants. Together we will grow through this crisis :)

I have just found your videos. My heart goes out to you on the loss of your father. After my dad passed away a few years ago, I suddenly developed a keen interest in gardening. And I started a major project clearing invasive blackberries from the woods behind our house, spending hours each day outside. This became my space for healing and processing my grief. It is incredible how nature can provide sanctuary and support us in times like this. Thank you for your vulnerability in sharing your journey!

I feel you and the mental health rollercoaster. Firstly, congratulations on your Hochzeit! You both look so happy. With the plants, I've lost a few since my Dad went into hospice in July and by the 17th he passed. My birthday this month sucked so much, it's horrible and I'm not fully coping at the moment. Learning to take it one day at a time, be easy on yourself

Sorry to hear about your dad! Tbh 3 years back, I was dealing with crippling depression due to how everything was falling apart in my life. We always had a garden in our home and I just watered it sometimes. But surprisingly I got obsessed with gardening during those tough times and if it wasn't for nature/gardening I wouldn't even be alive right now, so yes my garden saved me! Crazy how the plants we tend to, comfort/take care of us later on

I agree with you that plants can help us heal. I was an avid amateur gardener in my teens and twenties. I became overwhelmed with having to care for my plants when I had three small children, so I gave all of my plants (that were still alive) away and have not had any plants in my house for a very long time. Three years ago, my 19-year old son died. During his memorial service, I became the owner of three Peace Lilies. I took very good care of the lilies in memory of my son. I now have >60 house plants that I adore caring for. Each new leaf or frond makes me happy - an emotion I thought I would never feel again.
