What's cool is that one single developer did all of this and he's amazing. (He did get help from people for some stuff like parts of the map but overall hes the only dev.)
hopefully we would get updates semi consistently and things wont end up being a world of magic 2.0 and vetex decides to spend another 2 years on a new game.
@@amusician644 im pretty sure an update is already planned to releasr about next month or the month after that, cause iirc he was gonna work on update 3 on may, so 1 & 2 SHOULD release before that(i think update 3 was the nimbus sea storyline so it would take a good amount of time to finish due to having to make the map, write the story and script the parts)
@@adogewithwifi1652 It didn’t take 5…he had an whole other game out. Ans was creating different games at the same time as well. It isn’t really unimpressive if it’s by yourself and with all the mechanics given…now imagine he had a whole team, a genuine team. The graphics would be insane and so would some of his systems.
It turning into a rant about the sky islands and the process of accidentally falling off and having to climb back up is the truest part of the entire experience.
For context, the developer, Vetex, is an indie who started quite long ago and made a relatively popular game called Arcane Adventures. However due to Roblox system updates the game became corrupted and had to be scrapped. Afterwards he made an open-world called World of Magic with more improvement on the systems. One day two years ago he had a shower thought of being unsatisfied with WoM and decided to revamp the entire game to include the sailing and storyline elements of AA and hence started working on Arcane Odyssey. Vetex basically almost ran out of money to pay his taxes and released AO in febuary
i hope vetex brings back something similar to the magic council that's not the grand navy, grand navy sucks imo. also hope he brings back larger islands you can travel on foot or horse or sum
Yeah its fun and it's really hard to pin down why. I think it's because of the Atmosphere and freshness of it. Its a lot different than a lot of other games on the platform rn.
For me it’s 100% the Assassin’s Creed inspiration it pulls from. Even though the Aesir storyline is basically non existent you’re allowed to see the scope of what is planned for this game, not just the dev’s word. Also as someone who played the original back when it first came out to when it shut down, knowing the content that was cut for the rerelease because Vetex wasn’t satisfied with it gives me hope this game has a bright future.
@@EclipseGameplays oh btw, you can just reset and you spawn at the sky island if you have less than 1000 money you don't lose anything edit: nvm should've watched to end my bad
@@EclipseGameplays it draws alot of similarities because arcane adventures (their first game which was made 8 years ago) was the first game to introduce this kind of mechanics to roblox arcane adventures was the first game to actually try to tell a story and add side quests which was ripped off and made worse and worse over the years by other game devs
The devs listened! Level lock replaced with a recommendation, and now you teleport to the top after talking to Ren after you climb the mountain the first time!
I'd say that the level lock stage is an opportunity to travel to new islands where you gained new quests and check out new places, it isn't purposely intended to be a grind
I understand what you mean with the snow wizard having AOE attacks that are impossible to dodge, and I think that was put there to encourage blocking and parrying for new players. An easy way to parry his attacks is to press the block button right as he says the name of his magic attack above his head. Other enemies have harder attacks to parry but I think this enemy was designed to get you used to parrying and blocking attacks later in the game.
a little bit of skill issue, i'm not really good at pvp games like that, but i could dodge most of the time from his attacks (WTF, the comment is going to the comment below the one i'm writing lol)
If the hot key for blocking could be interchange with F, that’d be great. Reaching over to tap G is very uncomfortable. And even so, after a successful parry you can’t attack right after anyways. It’s either parry and run to heal, or don’t parry and just dodge their attacks, which I find works better
With enough agility you can actually doge most if it........ But most new player don't go for a full agility build or have an agility amulet immediately so yea it is supposed to teach parrying
Yessss Finally someone mentions this. The only reason I could first try Calvus was because of my regen 4 and agile 2 buffs. It really makes a significant impact on the amount of hits you can take.
After you talk to Ren when reaching Cirrus Island your spawnpoint is set up there so you can just reset back up, most you lose is a few galleons but its better than having to climb the whole thing everytime you fall
u only lose galleons from dying when youre above 1k (still annoying). they needa make it so if you're out of combat and reset you dont lose galleons at all
Yeah, but it's strange that there's level RECOMMENDATIONS in the same exact game alongside level locks, which makes me wonder why not just have one or the other, more preferably level recommendations since actually making the decision to have to level up on your own is better than the game outright forcing you to grind levels, like Eclipse said
True, but with things like the king calvus fight, you're kinda locked in so you dont want players at too low of a level going in and getting destroyed.
@@bowldawg4394 Level Locks exist specifically before bosses because you'll just either cheese the game or get carried without really playing the game. They want you to experience the game, not speedrun it. They did take a long time to make some of the NPCs and mechanics. It'd be a shame if you didn't at least try it. Ship fighting isn't a required quest, but it's a fun mechanic. Bounty hunting as well. Joining a faction. Etc.
This. This is a proper way to balance the good and bad. I see credit where its deserved, and I see criticism in places where it's justified, instead of throwing random reasons out just because people are people and theres always people who wanna just go on the negative. I've been playing vetex's series for some time, and got used to the keybinds assigned to us, but once this game dropped some of my friends played it with me, and they definitely had issues with the keybinds. also, literally everyone dashed off cirrus island at least once. i know ive done it at least 4 times. and for the level locks, i agree that they're annoying as hell, especially once you start making more slots, as it just wastes your time for no reason. and as for the inspirations, yes, the game did take inspiration from a lot of games, botw being one of them, but theres a lot of inspiration from assassin's creed, as you can see on the trello.
I've done that a couple of times, but the only thing i found annoying was me double taping at a time i didn't need to do so and NOT the climb back up as i actually REALLY enjoy doing so, even if it got tedious as worst
Level locks are meant for you to get out of the main story and mess around in the world, a lot of players hyperfocus on the story so it is a way to encourage the exploration. A lot of the stuff of the boats and climbing the peak could've been solved by you just rejoining game... Talking to the dude at the bottom sets your spawn in the sky island :p
Nice to see a video on arcane odyssey that has actually valid criticisms on the game that isn't just trashing on the combat and graphics, and giving it praise where it deserves it. Hopefully Vetex will take the issues you mentioned into account, as I've seen plenty of other people wanting to rebind their keys in this game too, and the game being in early access and in a state where things can be changed for the better helps
I love the fact the game gives the option to engage in glorious melee combat in every aspect even if melee combat can cripple you in certain fights and in boats.
Actually id say i have an easier time on boats because I can just use my battle axe ability which just nukes the boat lol. “I call this attack ‘Fuck everything and everyone within 30 feet of me!’”
i've unfortunately had the displeasure of facing iron-magic mages who happen to make any and all forms of melee basically useless by dealing 1000 dmg per move at times parrying and dodging won't do the trick against them and you cannot get any close without getting two tapped i genuinely feel like melee used to be more viable back in WoM
@@analyticCioccolata I disagree with the WoM part. Not only have we gotten a larger variety of weapons, but they each also have their own set of skills and some have their own ultimate art, which is a really big upgrade from WoM. Add on to that we also got fighting styles

For the future content, I think that magic customization shines the most once you can change the shape of the spell. Naval combat is my personal favorite part of the game, and sometimes the bosses feel a bit overwhelming when fighting them solo
Especially the sky island order boss. He was hell for me, just jumping from pillar to pillar easily dodging my attacks. I just had to dash to each pillar and shank him

There's good reason to all the asking you to play. The games been highly anticipated and turned out great. Not only that but it's a huge nostalgia trip for some of us about a game called arcane adventures
for the snow mage guy you were supposed to use the parry mechanic to your advantage to clear the fight unless you are heavily overleveled. block as soon as you're hit to parry the move ans you take next to no damage, keep repeating that, use spells in the openings (they do exist, its a bit hard to get used to tho) and you'll clear the mage extremely easily
I never used parry in my playthrough and I was fine. some bosses like the king were difficult, but you just need 1 teammate and if one person dies the other stalls the boss till they get back
The game is fun to play because the atmosphere, worldbuilding and story has been done really well. You can tell there was a lot of passion put into the game. Although the optimization is very poor and bosses have extremely bad designs, it can still be bearable (good luck for the final boss though. It has an instantaneous attack which can one shot you).
the one shot attack isn't even real lol,it teaches you to learn that if you HIT HIM while he charges it the dmg gets reduced to like 60 you can just dodge after hitting to avoid it too.
main gripe i have with bosses is that they can sometimes just block or parry in the middle of an attack's windup, which outright just breaks the rules of the game and makes it feel like you got robbed for landing an attack on the boss fair and square
making your blast hit multiple times has its benefits. if u only fire once you may miss it but if you crank up the shots then you have 19 other projectiles coming their way. more projectiles are especially good with light magic (the one that you were using) because it blinds targets more than if there was only 1 projectile
Also great with Crystal since it does a bigger chunk of damage every 4th hit. Although more blasts means they're smaller which actually makes them harder for me to hit, and ends up making me do less overall damage. I usually save duration for the explosion.
The more blasts you put, the more vulnerable you may be, since you are locked in place as you fire the blasts one by one, you could easily get punished while doing this. Also, the more blasts you have, the less damage each blasts does, though you can still do significant damage if you manage to hit your target with most of your blasts.
this is an old comment but multiple blasts have ZERO viability in pvp, in pve its pretty good you can oneshot elius. Multiple blasts massively reduces size and aoe which is basically the meta.
@@ibra673 Aye. Im a level 125 berserker: I can totally help you through the battle. My ign is Hahyouplayedyourself if you want me to hop in and beat elius up with you.
The lack of fast travel of any sort to Cirrus from the Step Stones really sucks, although I get more frustrated at terrain destruction. Spells don't destroy much terrain, so if you fight a boss for a while you can end up with tons of potholes that you and the boss get stuck in. Makes landing spells and dodging frustrating at times. Also, something that tells you how much damage your spells do in the editor would be pretty nice. Lastly, I'm glad you agree with me on Arish Vista. He has WAY TOO MUCH spam. I have no understanding how this quest needed nerfing because he is pretty tough.
yeah i think he's one of the few that doesn't blindly hate the game and likes what it does right but at the same time addresses actual issues the game has like the lack of keybind customization and having no way to respawn or find your boat if you forgot where you parked it
i always loved world of magic (the game the devs made before ao), and arcane odyssey is a EXPONENTIAL improvement. the entire experience positively BLEEDS with passion, and i love the ship mechanic!! every part of this game is so well-thought out and i absolutely ADORE it, there's so much to find and that makes the level locks meaningful in my opinion: they encourage you to look all across the map outside the already entertaining story. arcane odyssey is unironically one of my favorite rpgs and the FIGHTING, oh my gosh the fighting. it's so janky but in the end, that's part of the appeal. i love frantically slicing enemies to bits with swords or shooting a bullet-hell of lightning at them and such. just a fun game in general :]
but his point still kinda stands because if a person wants to be fully immerse within the game they wouldnt go out of their way to press reset, even though it would save time and the money cost kinda disencourages you as well
I don't think the Level Lock is a bad idea because, let's face it, if we attempted to battle the boss in the sky, then we would be destroyed. I think it's a good idea that they added that because it enables you to be ready for what's coming up and also because you can't access certain quests if you're below the level cap.
For me, if there is a level grind, it means the difficulty of the game is poorly design. But I finished the game and loved it but everytime there was a level lock I was just thinking "What? Again?!"
If I remember correctly, the first boss is where the first level lock appears, but you have to actually try to encounter it to actually see it since you easily get the level through the quests.
19:50 if you didn't know, you can parry attacks by clicking g. Holding g also blocks attacks. Pretty helpful to new players along with dealing with this annoying fight. Also 21:10 the point of having multiple attacks is procing your magic mutliple times, like with a light barrage you'd pretty much fully blind your opponent. Poison would proc a ton of damage over time, etc etc
yeah but he's right on the damage to leaving yourself wide open to be attacked ratio being not worth it at all, and since enemies are so mobile in this game, what are the chances of you landing all your shots if you have a lot of them in your attack?
@@coolsaad3243 as a max level conjurer... what openings? pve enemies don't need to recharge energy (at least they can't movestack like in wom) and other players are speedy as hell. i've gotten into a proper fight once... it lasted 5 entire minutes. we were both just dodging each others attacks. i had guns, they had magic, we both had swords.
@@bowldawg4394 ye, it would be pretty better if they made it so that its harder to hit but each shot does quite a lot of damage that would promote better aim and skill while also punishing you for beign stationary whilst using it
In the prequel to this game, going to the sky island was literally a thing that occurred every few minutes that would essentially launch you to the sky islands. Also the sky island part was the reason why I changed to shift to dodge. I like it like that. When it came to that dueling fight, I found it much easier the second time around because I had become much more skilled at the game. You will probably feel the same the more you play you become more skilled and those fights aren't an issue for you.
One of this developer’s earlier projects was called Adventure Story and I really loved it. They promised to bring it back and continue updating it once they were done making Arcane Odyssey. But, with the direction this game is going, I don’t mind which game they update at all!
You should pay attention to the little boxes that appear at the bottom right of your screen because it said your spawn was set at cirrus island so you could have just resetted instead of climbing up over and over, You also need to level up more and try to customize your ship and attack pirates to get sealed chests which u have to turn in to shipwrights and give the best loot in the game
to add on to this: consider investing in cargo runs. they've been nerfed not too long ago but are still, in my opinion, the best way to make money and exp. it literally almost doubles the money you invest.
@@pepsiman7033 I cringed too, the fact that vetex didn't even consider adding a checkpoint or a fast travel system so that you could just go back up there without losing anything would've been real nice, but no.. that somehow flew over his head. That all could've been avoided if there was a fast travel lmao.
For all the cirrus island quests I just reset anytime I fell or had to go back to it. It sets your spawn after the first iris quest so this is a way to get around the whole climbing thing. You do lose credits but there are plenty videos showing how to get like 20k+ credits per hour.
If you happen to create another character a little tip for the sky island quest, if you leave the game it functions the same as dying, putting you back at the spawn point for the story. But there really should be some kind of like elevator or teleport to the top of the sky island especially considering the fact that I think there's more sky islands to be added in the future.
the hunger system was kinda made for the cooking system (so the buffs.) and a fighting style (the one where you chug seawater.) it's kinda there to have it be where you can't just chug food buffs all the time. and it's also a balancing thing for the water fighting style (forgot the name). maaybbbee there's more to it in the future, but i think the system is completly ok and DOES add stuff ig. idk not much of a problem for me because, as you said, the starving isn't much of a problem.
Note, vetex fixed some of the stuff you complained. First, the game still tells you the quest is designed for level 40, but there is no level lock anymore. Second, you only have to climb the stepstones once now. After you go down to talk to "ren" again, it timeskips you back to the top
From someone that has 2 save files max level, I love this game because it ACTUALLY HAS A STORY. It feels like blox fruits, but done right. The bosses are VERY DIFFICULT, though. A normal person wouldnt be able to defeat them without a friend. The attention to detail is incredible.
Yay! I’m glad you ended up playing it, I personally enjoy it a lot. Oh yeah, arcane odyssey was also made by just *one* person. Another note from stuff in the video, many things on the map change over the course of the game. It’s not just enzinor joining your crew. For the thing about rebinding keys, it is *early access* and after endless complaints they seem to be adding keybinds in the menu, although it may be difficult due to the spell system. (It’s been so long… keybinds do not appear to be coming…) For the note of the food system, it can actually be very useful. It’s not meant to necessarily be “Keep yourself alive with hunger” it’s more meant to be a buff, with the hunger to incentivize using the system. You can get massively increased regeneration and lowered stamina use with food, it’s very good. (fyi the food system working like this was intentional, by the sole dev vetex) On the topic of the level lock he is aware that frostmill is the grindiest part of the game and is working to fix it, same with cirrus. It’s early access, and there is a deficit in quests but hopefully there will be enough to justify the lock. Right now however nobody ever goes back and trains, even after being “destroyed” by the boss as you said. Another note for “poorly tested” this game was tested by a full team for 3 years, throughout the entirely development and each tester played through the full thing around 5 times. For Ren, everyone makes fun of it. He should have moved up the stepstones in all honesty. I don’t know how it got through. TLDR: It’s early access, things are subject to change for a reason. You were mostly right, though. The sole dev is working on 90% of the issues mentioned.
"although it may be difficult due to the spell system." then why not just make is so you choose where the spell goes instead of it being predetermined? good solution i would say.
Right now, almost all of the level locks have been removed, except for 1 in the late game which i wont spoil. The level 40 quest after talking to ren back at the bottom, it now teleports you back up, so you don't have to climb the mountain manually again. The cutscene glitch has been patched so the game wont freeze in cutscenes. Also Arish Vista is just a poorly made fight, still hasn't been fixed and gives less exp than the goddamn, ice smugglers quest. Most of the boss fights after Iris, takes a massive jump in difficulty with the next fights, and while they do require a bunch of skill, the armor and enchants and player help from others will definitely make it easier.
I would recommend looking at the Trello and researching Awakenings. It's a pretty important decision that you need to make by level 80 while you can still reset stats. Awakenings completely change how you play the game and the Awakening you get is based on your stat spread. Also, everyone will tell you this, but Vitality sucks. It's currently a useless stat since spirit weapons, weapons made for high health builds, aren't in the game yet. So rn it just decreases your damage. You can get hp through armor and accessories
Decreases your damage... AND increases your health. Not at an even ratio, as I quote, "increase your health, but reduce your damage SLIGHTLY". You're getting an overall stat boost. Also, picking a character based solely on what is currently in the game means you won't have anything ready to go when it updates. Those classes will eventually get more attention, and I'm pretty sure spirit weapons are high on the to-do list. If you are ONLY concerned with a pvp/metamancer character, you make a worthy argument, but at that point just tell everyone to pick either mage or warrior as they have the current best pvp potential. Don't mean to sound hostile, but I keep seeing people treat vitality builds as though they're the worst mistake you could make. Unless you're a metamancer, they're not, and even if you are, do deeper research. Maybe even test it out for yourself. Don't just trust the word of the internet, especially on an early access game.
@R Casey While I understand your point, speccing into Vitality is a bad idea unless you're attempting to go for one of the tank builds. Even if you want to switch over, we're getting a free skill reset in the next update along with the potion system which has a skill reset potion. Not to mention according to the official Trello, Spirit Weapons are fairly far off considering the potion update is a month away. In the current state, you'd have more fun running any build other than Vitality builds due to them having more options.
@@rcasey6030 Also while I'm not sure about the exact amount of damage reduction, each point of Vitality gives 3 hp. Usually, skills/skill options unlock every 10 levels, meaning in some cases you sacrifice an option to either alter your skills/spells, or even miss out on an entire skill. Unless you are going for one of the Vitality based builds, putting points into Vitality just isn't worth it in the current version. Maybe once the level cap increases by a substantial amount, it'll be worth it but for now, it just isn't since we're gonna be stuck at 125 for at least a couple months.
@@shogunstreamer9811 Ah, I believe I misunderstood you. If by "don't spec into vitality" you mean "don't spec into stats outside of your relevant class", then THAT I can fully agree with. You're locked out of all non-relevant stats after your awakening anyway.
I definitely agree on the key rebind point. I hate the double tap to dodge. The whole hunger thing is also indeed quite weird. I am practically stacked with food. Anyways, for the most part, the game was released like 2 weeks ago, and vetex did say it's released in "early access". So yeah, it's still heavily under development. I reckon quite a few things will get reworked.
Vetex has acknowledged the Frostmill situation, though there is much more ways to level as I'm sure you've figured out in those 4 hours. As for the sky island situation, yeah the new sky ships are kinda painful, as well as the climb, sadly we do not have sky skates from 2016's Arcane Adventure.
@@splobby I feel like they could've had both in all honesty, saving sky ships for longer ventures but having sky skates with clouds between some islands for easier travel. Sky skates were also amazing in combat for quick and slightly unpredictable movement.
Repeatable quests do exist, but they are leagues better then simple bandit beating, I mean sure there are such quests in Frostmill and Redwake, but thats just the early game, so you will want some basic fighting quests to learn the games combat. Whereas a lot of other games will have you do boring bandit beating quests even at the lategame. A good example of a good repeatable quest is that one quest at Ravenna that gives 13k exp, as you are sent out to hunt pirate ships, which are a good challenge to test your mantle, as pirate ships and its officers are no pushovers, even players at the current maximum level can have trouble if things go south on them. Pirate ships also give some of the best loot in the game (aside from some of the bosses) making it all the more worth it to repeat the quest.
In the game, there is the icy cave. And if you destroy some walls in the right place, water will start flooding the cave. It's awesome that they even did that
a few things I wanted to say, you can Customize Spell names, Which is just Visual but I think its cool, I think your right about that Snow Mage on the Sky Island, (although your magic Choice shouldn't have anything to do with it, considering it has the Fastest Projectile speed, being light and all) and the Game is still in Alpha I think so if a bunch of the Negatives and bugs Don't get Fixed I will be Surprised, and there is a second level gate but its a smaller Gap from your level
Amazing Video Eclipse. and you don’t lose fame and money unless you are in combat when you die. So most time you can just reset and spawn back at the location your quest are at.
hey Eclipse, here are some combat tips. In games like these (including blox fruit which you wont go back to), It's better to fight without shiftlock on. Also, your magic (Light) is really only good in late game. If you get to mid game any time soon, you should def get Flame/Dark as your second magic
@@Foxtail190 Well the effectiveness light has in pve is it being fastest magic of all with decent damage and mediocre size of attacks for aoe. Also I believe it has a charred effect that has synergy with other elements but I could be wrong. In pvp its also able to blind the opponent for sometime and makes it even worse with multiple attacks landing. Light is actually really good compared to alot of other magics. Now its opposite, could be one of the worst magics in the game but I believe it could make up for it with how balanced the stats are.
11:51 the cooking mechanic is there, if you use different ingredients to make the meals they can give different bonuses, for example: if you use fish on your meal it will boost your hp regen, but i think its not that significant at all, since vetex wants to add potions in future updates
i remember he said potions will give diferent things , like burn imunity , less freeze time, immune to light blind. i may be wrong but i remember im saying that
On the new updates, most of the level locks were removed, and you automatically get teleported back to the top of the island after talking to the guy now
did kenton's upgrade quest and raided silverhold, found a guy in a jail cell, busted him out, and promptly fucked over silverhold with magic nukes how fun
Update: They got rid of the level locks in the game. You can now do the quests at any level, just that it makes you do a quick tutorial mission as a replacement instead. Like "Here's how you craft jewels." or "Here's how you brew potions." yada yada. Granted, that doesn't mean you'll actually be able to *beat* the stuff in the next quest(s), but you can technically do it now at any level, ...technically. Also, I found myself agreeing with pretty much everything you were saying about the game. Edit: Also, they implemented teleporting after you talk to Ben at the bottom of the mountain at each point in the questline there. You only need to climb the mountain once now in the story, assuming you don't fall off, in which case, you will have to climb it again. Or you can just reset your character, which will make you respawn back up there. I also found the comment about Blox Fruits, Deepwoken, and this game funny. Because, I guess I'm different in that regard. I actually do like Blox Fruits and Arcane Odyssey, but I don't like Deepwoken.
@@TheManWithTheFlannel Yeah, by that point you would be well over 100+ levels and would have known about alot of methods for exp gain. +The awakening is a pretty big deal no matter the class
As somebody with 150 Agility, its not that hard to climb the stepstones. I recommend yall get a couple Agility clothing you can switch to when your not planning to battle. You can jump 3x higher. You can do the superjump trick with the Leap Spell. Maybe climbing the side of the mountain, without all the terrain (bridges, steps) is easier. As you can just focus on jumping, as walking up the stepstones is slower compared to the Agility based climbing.
Edit: Im writing it here cuz its not letting me edit my comment, making me wanna throw my phone. Eating food that replenishes your stamina, I think its Invigorating. Does make a huge difference.
when it comes to the food thing im pretty sure part of the reason that mechanic exists is to prevent afk/scripted farming cause that used to be a big issue in some of vetex's older games that really damaged the games themselves in terms of player scaling and the communities tanking because everyone just afk farmed for high tier things in his predecessor game to arcane odyssey arcane adventures this issue existed heavily with things like autofishing scripts the hunger bar makes it so if your not actively eating food/meals you will die eventually preventing methods like that and any future potential gaps to create afk farms are always handled thanks to food existing
and for the level locking certain areas trap you in them entirely for the sake of keeping the story straight like the infiltration of fort talos you get trapped in there with the boss and your only option is to stealth your whole way back out just to hit the sea and level if you need to or fight in that instance i dont blame level locking when they know theres areas that will psuedo lock you in with something that could be way stronger than you (and usually still is even with the level wall)
quick tips, if you reset yourself, your boat respawns in 2 minutes I believe, or 3(but it gives you the message for 2 after you respawn) blocking is pretty much required for later game fights, I believe its g by default, and you want it for that snow fight
I've always had a love-hate relationship with magic-based combat in the Arcane Adventures series. It seems like it's always evolving, but never really scratching that responsive itch I find standing between me and enjoying using magic. The conjurer awakening somewhat addresses this, as the weapon attacks are much more reactive and fairly versatile, but the awakening comes so late and if anything I lose interest in relying on the magic by then. Even then, most magics give little benefit to the weapon, typically just inflicting a status effect in place of bleed or slightly modifying weapon stats. Problem is, even the fastest magics make you immensely vulnerable unless you've maxed out your magic and you're dealing maximum damage with the time you spend standing around casting spells. The status effects are always nice, and they can be quite powerful- but for the main focus the game's combat centers around, its always felt a bit underbaked. The problem is especially clear when you acknowledge that, at least until now, Vetex hasn't ever been too good at making boss fights work. Even now, I think the whole aimbot with massive AoE trend is still a thing. The only part of the formula that's making fights in AO more functional than the endurance tests of AA is the new dimension of mobility the dash adds. The dash, while a major improvement on magic-based combat, also introduces a whole other issue: PvP is dominated by AoE. You can use weapons like muskets or abilities like beams and blasts, but these tools are more effective on NPCs. Some npcs will dash reactively (and I find it quite annoying, much like their random propensity to block all incoming damage while performing an otherwise punishable attack), but only players really have access to this tool. This means that, ironically, Magic becomes the MOST viable setup for PvP with the large and high burst damage attacks full mages get access to in the late game. On another note, anyone remember the "shield" move all the magics in AA had back in the day? They seemed immensely useless, given that a lot of magics seemed to just *AoE damage* through them and the shields held you in place like any other spell. Again, I think it's both indicative of how far we've come since AA but also how much the original magic system needs more transformative change. I think part of this can come with the way magics are cast, as magic menu options perhaps. Biggest thing I miss from WoM is the ability to change the way multi-burst attacks are cast by the casting style you used, but it seems we've lost that dimension of interaction. Maybe more ways to cast that punish you less or enable different uses for magic, in much the same way these stances affected casting methods, would be a worthwhile addition to get the best of both worlds and make magic use more accessible.
To be honest, I agree with you, but I still find magic to be fun to play with even without AoE attacks, which I don't usually use because they are slow. I usually don't do pvp so it doesn't become a problem for me.
Shield move was good but the game didnt give enough reasons to use it I didnt play alot doing AA so I wouldn't remember but from AR it's pretty cracked
Great review, you managed to not completely blow things out of proportion like most. You brought up valid arguments and I generally agreed with most. However, in my opinion, the level locks in general are probably for the best. I played the prequel to the game (World of Magic) which shares a similar combat system, so I had a basic idea of how the combat and magic system worked even after the reworks, and I was still getting the shit kicked out of me. I had to wait until level 60 in order to make reasonable progression because of a certain boss fight (fuck you lord elius), because by then I learned a lot more about the new combat and such. It is still a valid criticism don't get me wrong, but in my opinion it's understandable as to why it's there.
Something i noticed about the cutscenes. It sometimes does soft lock but it also does sometimes take upwards to 5 minutes or more just to get the cutscene to load
also about the food they can apply affects such as hp regen fortified (take in lower damage) insanity (slowly kills you and has whispers in your ear) then theres amplified? i think thats what its called, it buffs your stamina regen. although I don't know if anything explains that
The Stepstones back and forth quest is made a chore honestly, you jump down and then you drown yourself to spawn back up at the island to speak to someone then jump down to drown yourself yet again. Felt like the worst interaction in a game that I've had in probably my entire gaming experience. I wish they made it so you only had to go up once and send down something like a pidgeon to speak to Ren instead of constantly having to climb the same mountain or reset, since resetting your character JUST to avoid a 3 minute climbing experience is so immersion breaking and completely screws over that game acting as what is basically a player dedication check.
I really think they should add something similar to breath of the wilds shrines, in the sense that you can use them as fast travel. They could place it in the ‘secrets’ or town every island that you discover, so than it can make life so much easier.
It's also to make sure you're leveled enough since at the end of the current storyline there's a certain point that requires you to be at least level 120
It's nice to see people appreciating what vetex has done. The things people can do today are almost limitless. Like in arcane odyssey there are things so many things that u can do other than the story line like u can be a marine and go up the ranks or become an assassin and do the same u can also go to the sky island and explore the sky islands also u can grind bosses and fight them again enchant your weapons and customise your magic spells and so many builds and also there are npcs like the guys in the forest where there is a boss there are curses the story is so well made. I love it
About the boat respawns, yes it is extremely annoying *to anyone who wants a semi solution* you can manually respawn your boat if you own 2 boats by changing the boat you have equipped (clicking the ship icon below ur stamina) which will start a despawn timer (then you can just reselect the boat you want) other than that, if you die and respawn far away from your boat it will despawn after 2 minutes but otherwise you just gotta deal with it.

The level 40 lock is actually pretty fast if you are on your second profile. What I did was just do the alchemist quest and just do the ice mines quest for the rest. It's honestly pretty easy and quick.
I tried playing this game. I absolutely fell in love with just how customizable the magic was in particular, the graphics and everything were great... But I'm sorry, I hate nearly everything else about this game. I haven't sunken a LOT of time into it, but I've put in at least 5 hours (about the point you reached for this video or slightly after) and reached the point where I just had to call it quits. The world exploration felt frustratingly slow. The buildcrafting and progression felt confusing (though maybe I'm just stupid idk). The combat felt simultaneously too slow and fast at the same time, and overall clunky (why can the environments be destroyed mid-fight? Just so you can fall in a pit and die?) I'd rather just go play Fantastic Frontier then... Though, I do like AO's story and love its visuals/aesthetic, but the gameplay itself just felt like a lost cause to me, much as I wish I could enjoy it. Buuuuuut, despite all these criticisms, it's still way better than my game, and this game only has 1 developer compared to my game's 6. So even though it gave me extreme frustration for the brief period I played it, it's still one of the roblox games I have the most respect for. Vetex truly be built different. Edit: One thing I really enjoyed about the game, though, was that when I was doing a lot of the more chill, laid back quests like fishing and collecting stuff, for some reason there was ALWAYS players fighting nearby. Pirates trying to raid the town and heroes fighting to stop them. So you just had these massive ruckus battles going on and theres me off to the side of it just vibing and fishing. It was amazing.
You should come back to arcane odyssey, they removed most of the level locks got rid of all the repeatable quests and added a bit more content and also a second sea with harder enemies (though its a bit barren next update is gonna add the navy base)
What's cool is that one single developer did all of this and he's amazing. (He did get help from people for some stuff like parts of the map but overall hes the only dev.)

He have skill issues
But again would ppl risk it when the quest was nerfed and u dont have ur spawn there
a little bit of skill issue, i'm not really good at pvp games like that, but i could dodge most of the time from his attacks (WTF, the comment is going to the comment below the one i'm writing lol)

@@bowldawg4394 Level Locks exist specifically before bosses because you'll just either cheese the game or get carried without really playing the game. making your blast hit multiple times has its benefits. if u only fire once you may miss it but if you crank up the shots then you have 19 other projectiles coming their way. more projectiles are especially good with light magic (the one that you were using) because it blinds targets more than if there was only 1 projectile

(It’s been so long… keybinds do not appear to be coming…)
For the note of the food system, it can actually be very useful. It’s not meant to necessarily be “Keep yourself alive with hunger” it’s more meant to be a buff, with the hunger to incentivize using the system. You can get massively increased regeneration and lowered stamina use with food, it’s very good. (fyi the food system working like this was intentional, by the sole dev vetex)
On the topic of the level lock he is aware that frostmill is the grindiest part of the game and is working to fix it, same with cirrus.

@@flappyflap2693 It's just a reason not a defense

Level locks are in place to make you explore the game more and do more to level up other than just bandit beating
The Dev actually listened! He got rid of level locks and the whole mountain climbing thing is gone.
In the game, there is the icy cave. And if you destroy some walls in the right place, water will start flooding the cave. It's awesome that they even did that

As somebody with 150 Agility, its not that hard to climb the stepstones. I recommend yall get a couple Agility clothing you can switch to when your not planning to battle. You can jump 3x higher. and for the level locking certain areas trap you in them entirely for the sake of keeping the story straight like the infiltration of fort talos you get trapped in there with the boss and your only option is to stealth your whole way back out just to hit the sea and level if you need to or fight in that instance i dont blame level locking when they know theres areas that will psuedo lock you in with something that could be way stronger than you (and usually still is even with the level wall)

Shield move was good but the game didnt give enough reasons to use it
I didnt play alot doing AA so I wouldn't remember but from AR it's pretty cracked
Most of the time I think the game forgets to load the cutscene, but after you sit there for a while it goes "Oh wait- I was supposed to do that"

The world exploration felt frustratingly slow. The buildcrafting and progression felt confusing (though maybe I'm just stupid idk). The combat felt simultaneously too slow and fast at the same time, and overall clunky (why can the environments be destroyed mid-fight? Just so you can fall in a pit and die?)
I'd rather just go play Fantastic Frontier then...
