Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door Switch exclusive gameplay

- Just like last year’s excellent Super Mario RPG remake, The Thousand Year Door marries traditional role-playing features with a story and cast of characters you really wouldn’t expect to see in a modern Mario game - and until these RPG remakes were announced last summer, it seemed like we probably wouldn’t again.

I'M SURPRISED THEY GAVE PAPER MARIO HIS VOICE BACK
THIS. HE'S MARIO AGAIN.
I think they still should have given Mario a quiet jump sound
Thank goodness, I hated Mario being mute in modern PM games, he felt more like Doopliss posing as Mario than that being the real Mario, up to even the way modern PM Mario would do silly dances and act kinda robotically, as if Doopliss is taking full advantage everything he does goes under someone else's name, and he trying to act the way Mario would act according to someone that barely knows the basics
Heck, it would be very funny and cool if in a brand new game they make the modern PM games turn out being plays in universe where Doopliss was roleplaying as Mario all along, following the ending of TTYD where he decided to join Flurrie and become an actor himself, that would also explain why modern PM has some major inconsistencies with classic PM, like Bob-Ombs exploding, where in classic PM they can burst as many times as they want, no matter how large the explosion, and they even find amusement doing so, while in modern PM once they blow up, they're gone, dead
@@dustymcwari4468
I actually like the silent Paper Mario a bit more because it makes him more in line with the 64 version, giving him almost a whimsical silent-movie vibe to his character.
Your Doopliss comment doesn't really make much sense to me because Doopliss's movements are creepy become he doesn't move like Mario, not because of any robotic movements on his part. Additionally, he isn't silent, so it wouldn't even make any sense.
The Bobombs should have never came back to begin with. How they are handled in Origami King is more in line with how they are supposed to be-living explosives. Them regenerating brings into question why they are mass-produced in other games if they can just come back to life.
The explosion aspect isn't even consistent within itself. Sometimes it outright kills them like Bobby; other times they just shrug it off. It's absolutely asinine and I would gladly trade Bombette and Bobbery if it means this incoherency dies completely.
@@almondjoy4938 I'd prefer the imaginary bomb people being able to explode as many times as they want if it means having a unique party member with unique abilities in my fantasy RPG, caring about logic so much in a Paper Mario game of all things is weird. Saying asinine and using semicolons and em dashes in your UA-cam comment doesn't make you sound any more credible by the way, you can just talk like the other people.
The best part are the voice sfx, which have huge M&L influence, like
-Bub-ulb sounding like someone who works for Chompzilla that never gets into conflict
-Thwomp saying "HUGHHUGHHUGHHUGHHUGH"
-Fuzzy doing the sound of its bounces
The sound effects in this remaster are immaculate. Love them!
The thwomp speech sounds send me flying
I swear, if Rawk Hawk's voice is a bunch of Hawk screeching sounds I'm going to laugh so hard.
@@daniellelondon439 Nintendo confirmed through one of their surveys that TTYD is a remake.
@@kevinsmith163 That's what I meant to say, got the words mixed up.
I love how they continue the peak parts of The Origami King, also making the boss themes a metal song like TOK did before
One of the peak parts of Origami King, the dry bones design was left behind though.
Then again it debuted in sticker star so its probably more accurate to say the peak part of Sticker Star in that case.
Another cool thing from TOK is that the battle theme changes depending on where you are
@@birds1062 Because Sticker Star was just copying their New Super Mario Bros design. TTYD was upgrading PM64's design, which was unique.
Honestly was going to say Oragami King continues the peak parts of TTYD.
@@AkameGaKillfan777TBF, Paper Mario 64's enemy designs were based heavily on Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island.
I do like those designs better but I don't think it's fair to call the Dry Bones and Boo designs unique to Paper Mario. I do wish they'd stay though...
1:28 Perfectly timed
You can tell the Origami King conposers came back to do the upgraded music. It sounds SO GOOD UGHHH
What’s interesting is the main origami king composer first showed in the original thousand year door as music director and then returned for origami king.
3:24 Is that... Koops' music theme?
The partners have themes outside of Ms Mowz and maybe Vivian!?
@@sora654able1 Vivian never had her own theme in the original game. It was just Madame Flurrie and Ms. Mowz.
Yep! It's basically confirmed that all of your partners will have their own unique theme.
@@kevinsmith163 She had the shadow siren theme, which I am counting as part of her theme
@@sora654able1 I guess, but I personally don't count it. To me, it's just the general theme for the sisters, not Vivian, Marilyn, or even Beldam specifically.
7:57 This rendition of the battle theme is so intense for a beginning dungeon. My goodness.
I agree lol
It kinda sounds like King Olly’s castle, hence why it feels like too much of a stretch.
Oh my god you don't immediately fall in the water if you get close. This will be a lifesaver. Can't count how many times I wound up getting my butt bit by that mechanical fish after falling in.
Each character has its own text bubble sound? That is an awesome detail
I like that the battle theme changes based on where you are
This should honestly be a standard in every rpg
This is honestly something I loved from Origami King and I have absolutely no qualms about it being done here. It makes things more interesting :3
I honestly am the most hyped about this aspect more than anything else. I bet all of them are going to incredible.
@@sora654able1fighting at Hooktail's Castle now feels like a medieval adventure where you're going to slay the dragon, I know that's literally the objective xd, but daaamn, this new song sells it super well and makes it hype as heck
I could be wrong but I don't think it does. I think they just added a theme for a first strike. I've seen it on a couple different videos and it happens anywhere.
I love that each characters have their own voice sfx now just like what they did in Banjo Kazooie.
9:53
Did...
Did they base her theme after one from Mario DDR Remix?
HOLY...
Wait, what do you mean DDR? I knew there was a crossover, but not remixes of Paper Mario tracks!
@@LocalPlagueDocThere was a Ms.Mowz Theme-remix on Mario DDR for Gamecube, basically-
Sonic Riders ahh beat
I love how the melody cuts out of the battle themes during the attacks! It’s so dynamic! Also the facts that Koops (and possibly the other partners) has his own theme now- it’s just amazing!
Marios hammer sounds at 4:20 are insane. He aint using the hammer he abusing it. Sounds like hes got a shotgun or something 😂😂
Well, when you have that many drybones surrounding you things may get a little crazy.
God bless you.
The noise is taken from the newer games, which is less cartoony. Coupled with the dry bone sounds, it does sound more brutal.
I really do miss the chips and clicks and tweets of the old mini boss theme
It seems you can get a GameCube fix badge that will make the music like the original so you can get your chips and clicks that way
Oh my God the music is amazing😭
the most interesting part bout TTYD remake that I barely see people mentioning, is that it looks like they gave enemies like dry bones types and pokey types a much better and easier tell of when they're attacking the character in the back,
which's a very nice and much needed improvement over the original, where it was hard to tell if the back slot was going to get attacked
now the only question is if the parabuzzy/spiky parabuzzy will be as difficult to tell like in Gamecube TTYD-
Man the hooktail remixe sounds awesome I Can't wait for this game i only hope they add more content for players who played it already like a boss rush or luigies story they just need to add something new for the people who played it already like magolors epilogue from return to dreamland comes up instantly and it turned into a worldwide success imo.
Thank you for the gameplay video VGC ^-^
People who haven't played this before will be in for a ride, it's a fantastic game and the Switch update looks splendid.
1:30 perfectly timed with the music
0:30 Wait, they kept in Hooktail’s foot fetish? Oh boy…
Truly a based remake
OH
MY
GOODNESS
Suddenly hooktail's last offer makes more sense...
A week left until this glorious game comes out, going to be exciting. If you played the original back in 2004. I've decided to play it again myself recently, can't wait.
I love Koops’ theme!
oh the curses have a RIDICULOUS vox sound 😭 6:07
It's fucking Principal Skinner holy shit
I'm impressed that they continue to remember the legacy of The Origami King and others.
The Thwomp’s voice is so perfect
New area specific battle themes are fire
How did you get early access to the game?
thank you VGC
hey fancy seeing you here
@@veryFair64ayy
The sound quality is fantastic
I have one gripe about this version. In the original GC when an audience was gonna throw something you needed to be vigilant and decide if it's good or bad. In this version everything stops which I hate cause you want things to continue to flow normal time without stopping. So if i wasn't paying attention, I'd pay the price.
2:43 awww… why you no talk to the Fire Emblem Toad??? 😭😭😭
Man, those visuals are so beautiful!😩 I really hope this is the beginning of new Paper Mario games that return to its RPG roots with new stories!
7:24 idk why but mario looking up like this looks cursed to me lol
I can hear Kalamari desert in Ms Mowz theme
Attack FX G, in Attack FX R's original location? Were the badges swapped around or will Hooktail have a new weakness? 🤔
Hooktail’s weakness has been changed to frogs, like how it was in the original Japanese version.
Honestly, I think that makes more sense, since some frog types are poisonous/venomous, so chances are that Hooktail once ate a frog that was poisonous.
@@marioluigifan134 I didn't know she had a different weakness in the Japanese version, that is interesting considering most of the remakes we have and are getting are based on the Japanese version
@@supergamingwarriorgamerult4705
The reason its frogs in the Japanese game is because the FX R sound is supposed to sound like a species of Japanese frog, but Nintendo of America changed it to crickets because they felt that most Americans would not associate that sound with frogs and be confused since they often have more of a “ribbit” sound here
@@marioluigifan134 So how are they going to handle the Luigi Toad fan quest?
@@supergamingwarriorgamerult4705correction, the english version changed her weakness to Crickets for some reason, this is correcting that mistranslation, because it was always meant to be frogs, and makes more sense for that to be frogs, because those can be very dangerous if consumed like Hooktail likes to do
Damn I remember being 6 and playing this game
The SFX quality is much 3x realistic
8:04 I actually hate this change. I like the factor of pressing X but still controlling the menu, needing me to pay attention. Now they just zoom in, remove your options and make you press X? It’s minor but enough to make me a little disappointed tbh.
I feel like that’s a nitpick, probably makes it slightly easier to tell if it’s an item or a object being thrown
@@IncredibleLuigi oh yea it’s 100% a nitpick lol. I’m still excited about the game overall, but just feel like this change will get a little annoying at times.
@@Randomboy2011i can see what you mean but I’m sure small details like this wont be too big of an issue in the grand scheme of things
If you ever play with peril strats you will know the pain of not being able to notice a stupid rock while you were busy in the menus.
I appreciate that now you won't accidentally miss something good being thrown. Never forget losing out on a well needed life shroom from the audience in the pit of 100 trials because Mario ran off to attack the enemy. That physically hurt to see.
This reminds me of some of the gamecube demos
This is a remake of a GameCube game.
@@hectoramador6397What I meant was that it reminds me of the E3 demos for this game back when it was called Paper Mario 2.
They have GOT to remake the original Paper Mario at some point!
The timing for guarding is like in TOK
Man this remake looks amazing
I saw Mario stop before the water, I do hope you can fall in tho
Game looks and sounds beautiful,
I cant wait to play this!!
dudeee i wanna watch them so bad but I wanna experience the game new mechanics for the first time :(
I can’t say for sure yet, because I oc have to play first (omggg only a couple of weeks from now 🙌🏻!).
But… why are every now and then notes or effects in the music missing? Often they are part of what made me like the songs in the first place. Also, the hammer sound effect sounds awfully weak. Where’s that satisfying “WHACK”?
All videos I have seen, even 60fps videos showcase it at 30FPS. God I hope it's not 30FPS, what about this is too graphical intensive for the switch in docked mode? The original is 60FPS.
It is 30fps
It's really not a bad 30 frames, in fact I think it even blends well with the character animations being paper.
30 frames is only a noticeable issue when a game animated at 60fps is scaled back, or on bad ports that still manage to chug at 30. A game animated around a consistent 30 frames from the ground up doesn't look as bad to me as people exaggerate.
I be hyped :D
Bro its not released💀💀💀
Definitely cannot wait to play this remake, 100% equipping the nostalgic tunes badge though for sure first thing
Maybe modern paper mario has scarred me too much but hearing the modern paper mario sound effects for stuff like healing Really puts me off. I like the new dialogue noises though
What a dumb reason to be put off 😂
@@Novarcharesk No
I thought the same, newer paper Mario games let me with a bad impression I guess
@@tonche3857 its just jarring bc super mario rpg nailed the sound design. aka they pretty much just used th original sound effects
I think modern Paper Mario nails sound design and I'm happy it's carried over to the OGs. 64 and TTYD also were my first Paper Marioa
Why is the paper shiny?
Cus beauty
Could you confirm whether the game tuns at 30 of 60 fps?
confirmed 30
It looks beautiful but I am bummed about the framerate. Just seems wrong GC had 60 and this is 30.
Yuh
Framerate programming is more intricate than you think it is
@@AkameGaKillfan777 I know nothing about programming- as the consumer though and as someone who loved the original- missing out on that original part of the experience and going backwards in a dramatic way like halving the frame rate is a tad bit disappointing- especially because timing and rhythm are so important
@@nazor1 For example, visual and gameplay frames are not always timed together, and nothing except superguards and Power Bounce jumps should be difficult to time. Though the latter won't make much difference anyway since the number of jumps you can make is randomly capped on bosses.
In Bowser's Inside Story DX it was actually easier to get Excellent solo attacks than the original where they were needlessly difficult.
@@AkameGaKillfan777 good to know. In any case I prefer a higher frame rate so reducing it is a negative for me- regardless of the reason
Looks easier than the og. I hope we have lots of hatdrder fight post game or something then like RPG
And litteral nitpick i don't like the new star point get jingle
when the boss rush mode
As far as I've seen, all enemy stats, attacks and moves are the same. This is a game by Intelligent Systems, not FromSoftware.
It's not easier
Other than 15 items instead of 10, basically everything we've seen so far is identical to the original in terms of stats
So for most part, no it's not easier (at least compared to the RPG remake)
I'm not vibing with the new sound.
Cope
You talking about the music?
@@IncredibleLuigi I mean, generally speaking, yes.
It's nice to know the game's providing the player the option to switch to the original soundtrack through a new badge.
I prefer the synthesized distinctly gamey style over this less unique orchestral take.
@@michaelyochim6016 what do you think of the music in origami king though?
@@IncredibleLuigi I haven't played it, so I don't have an opinion.
To my recollection, I've only played Paper Mario 1, Thousand Year Door, and Super Paper Mario.
I feel conflicted about the new sound design and music. It's definitely more.. craftsy in it's tone. I like how some of the tracks are different and varied where you're at, but I feel like the overall tone is just different to what I'm used to for TTYD. Maybe I'm too used to the original. The paper feel to the sound design is okay like how the footsteps are on cardboard. Yet also at the same time, there's a reason TTYD and Super Paper Mario didn't go for this, despite very much having the capabilities of doing so; they both were going for a different tone. I'm glad they have the nostalgia badge to revert to the original soundtrack, and I'm hoping it also reverts to the original sounds too. The new sound design just doesn't sound that amazing in some spots given the huge changes they've made to it. Other spots sound great, but something like the new battle victory theme just sound... not as good as the original.
If you like the new sounds and the music, that's okay! I am glad they tried to do something new and different.
Wow Sticker Star 4 looks really good so far!
What do you mean “sticker Star 4”? It’s a remake of the second paper Mario game which is “paper Mario the thousand year door”.
@@Tailsfan5338 It was a joke bro, just poking at how the franchise has come full circle, and there are genuinely people who grew up with Sticker Star who are finding out what this game really is just now

@@Yutodx2 what do you mean “sticker 4”? There’s never been a sticker 4.
@@Tailsfan5338 Bruh it was just a joke poking fun at how there are now people who grew up with sticker star who could be experiencing this game for the first time
30fps... eeeeeew
Hold on, I thought the gimmick of dull bones in the audience was they couldn't give star power... Yet another nerf next to the poison bingo.
Because everyone LOOOVED it in the original when they got a full Dull Bones audience didn't they? 🙄
To be fair it's probably an improvement over essentially being a wasted seat
The poison bingo doing a third instead of half HP is a blessed change, that thing's purely random, and if you were using the Double Pain badge for the sake of making things harder, that could oneshot you out of nowhere, it sucked, taking a third instead still sucks, but its much more moderate, and that prevents sudden deaths like those
I’ll be purchasing this in hopes they turn the franchise around from the downfall of super paper mario and onwards. Origami king was like a spit in the face; I hope this outsells it 3:1
Super was still good imo, it was just different.
@@Masked_Mastermind the story was okay I suppose but going to disagree about the gameplay. I am not going to change my opinion and say that it was good just because everything that came after was so terrible
@@mp9228 I honestly liked the real-time battling mixed in with the platforming (maybe even more-so than turn-based battles), though I will admit it could’ve been done a bit better. I respect your opinion though.
I have a few complaints. First off the crowd not reacting like in TTYD original I don't like at all. When you beat an enemy, where's the music for collecting the starpoints. I'm still gonna buy the game but they took away some of the charm of the original game if you ask me
Since there’s various battle themes, it won’t play that song past petal meadows. Unless you use the new GameCube badge which has all the og music
What are you talking about? The audience was reacting. Did you not hear the toads cheering? Listen in the hooktail battle again. They are reacting it just seems like some characters have noise that isn’t loud enough to hear.
