- Each summer, Community Chorus Project runs a Summer Recording Workshop at UNC-Chapel Hill for high-school singers admitted after an audition process. Summer 2017, summer singers recorded this version of "Because" arranged by Marianne Cheng, a NYC based singer and voice teacher. Cheng additionally directs the program and conducts the chorus. Colin Egan recorded and mixed the song, and serves as assistant director for the workshop. The video was shot and directed by Zach Stamey of Focus Media. Community Chorus Project, founded by Lauren Bromley Hodge, offers this week-long Recording Workshop each summer for young singers in collaberation with the Department of Music at UNC at Chapel Hill. For more information, and to register to audition for 2018, visit our website: communitychorusproject.org
As a 73 year old Beatles fan, WHAT A REMARKABLE version the hair on my arms are standing up !!!
Ditto here Richard!
@@jhawk3547 Mega Dittos!
Im hope your arms are standing up 4ever,when you lisent this beautiful song master.
J'ai 70 ans , c'est une de mes chansons préférées parmi les chefs-d'œuvre des Beatles.
L'expérience est intéressante.
Bravo à tous ces jeunes gens.❤❤
Hey Richard! Director here, Marianne Cheng, and I am SO glad you enjoyed this rendition of "Because." These kids were INCREDIBLE musicians, and worked so hard to shape and polish each [loooong] phrase. The breath control is tough in this one!
The truth is, in the arrangement, I mostly used exactly what Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison sang, because it was pretty much perfect* as it was. We just took those harmonies and sang them with a choral approach.
*The only downside about this song is it forces people with low voices up high, up to an F above Middle C a lot of the time! Needless to say, my baritones and basses got a LOT of falsetto practice that week 😀
Many of these high schoolers here are in college or graduated now, and some even pursue music as auditioning actors and/or songwriters! I must say as well,
Elijah Fox on Piano did an INCREDIBLE job, lifting the simple arpeggios off the page and giving it his signature touch. He's now an [internationally-touring] jazz artist, collaborator, and producer. He's very findable online, I would go check him out! #elijahfox #communitychorusproject #holycrap5yearsalready
Sometimes you have to hear another version to realize how beautiful a song is.
So true.
If you didn't realize this songs beauty and genius by listening to the Beatles original version I don't know what to say...they were incredible singers(John and Paul) and great at harmony.
epic burn
The Beatles 3 part harmony on the original was epic.
been a favorite of mine for years... beatles version is vastly superior.
One of the most beautiful of the Beatles songs. Their harmonies were superb
❤
And we shouldn't forget Beethoven's contribution.🙂
But the Beatles melody was a disaster ...
At 16 this was an outstanding Beatles song . At 70 this sounds like a prayer.
it IS prayer
Well said my friend!
The genius of the Beatles, no band in the world could could equal them.
They never have and I suspect never will ...
This is the work of genius .. there is no other word for it. A sublime, transcendent masterpiece, up there with the greatest musical compositions in history ...
Yes. Maybe.....just maybe....there is some hope for this planet after
all.? Even at 2 minutes to midnight.
Yes Raymundo Beatles nr 1 in the world
Check Smooth Mcgroove's cover that came out yesterday
I disagree. Their genius was giving us joy and help through their music.
Jesus God... I am a lifelong admirer of The Beatles and this made me cry.
Oh yes. It made me cry too (and not because the sky is blue).
I don’t see all the fuss about this video, it almost put me to sleep.
You’re not the only one
Me too...
Me too...
This album was delivered from another planet for us humans to appreciate. This is exactly why The Beatles are considered the best group ever they went from She loves you to this in 6 years. Can you name any band that’s even come close.
"Boys" was not written by The Beatles, although they certainly put it on the "map". It was recorded in 1963, the same year as "She Loves You".
@donwarnick1089 The Beach Boys
Está inspirado en la obra de Betowen...." Claro de la luna" los acordes y arpegios del piano son un homenaje de Los Beatles
The Beatles’ brilliance with Melody and Harmony is still unsurpassed.
I'm sure John is looking down and loving this. FANTASTIC
And George and Martin.
hey,
jebediah here, i love this comment im sure john is, my friend
So is George ❤
I don't think so. This song is too simplistic and delicate. BTW, I love is too for all of it's simplicity.
Especially the diversity of the faces.
THIS is what young people should be taught in school, things of content, positivity, repose, and historic significance.
Wow! Just wow!
Hear hear!
And just to know how to harmonize properly. The Beatles were masters at it.
As a mexican young who raised in the every day violence
I 100% agree, there so many young people around the world with talent and heart to make beautiful art like this
Better than killing and doing stupid things
@@roony64 every day there is violence where you are?
The Beatles will be loved, and celebrated still in 100 years alongside Bach and the like. They will never be forgotten. I have seen concerts like Sir Paul at Glastonbury, with 3 generations knowing and singing along with him.
You're totally right, Jewel Heart!
I saw Paul in '76... could've seen the Beatles for $6.50 back in the day - but, I chose to stay the extra week up in summer camp, instead !! ;)))) Anywhoo... Paul was, as expected, super-ciliac (???) however - without John's harmonies ance sparring off for the lead - I'm afraid it was still one-sided. Never got that same rush as with the two of them singing together !! Ah, well... (sigh)
As a critic once said of the Beatles when they exploded onto the scene in the mid to late 60s and created ever more extraordinary music, they will become known as the "fourth B", as in Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and The Beatles. He was so right!
I hope so, because they deserve it, but I fear that the generations now will not appreciate it.Generation Z and generation A really are a different breed. Growing up immediately in a world with Fibre-optic broadband access, streaming services and smartphones., Without the need to engage a human level, or be one with nature, in any form of empathic way.Being more at 1 with the virtual world. This makes them almost a different species, In my opinion
World, round, turns.
Wind, high, blows.
Sky, blue, cry.
Lennon's wordplay frolicking in plain sight.
Lovely to hear young voices of today showcasing this amazing and haunting song so beautifully.
Do you see the logic behind it though, Goddy ?
this is the most underrated video ever oh my god
So true Julianna
I need this on a daily basis. It makes me feel good!
I think they should re title it. They would have thousands of more views.
@@CHRISRepAZ what title would you suggest? I clicked pretty quick on this.
@@buddyneher9359 I think she's right. It is SO friggin' good that it should have 10 times as many views. Maybe just begin the title with the name of the song?
This has got to be one of THE BEST harmonic songs ever written/recorded.
Lennon was inspired to write this song when he heard Yoko playing Beethoven on piano. John, Paul and George recorded three vocal tracks each to make a nine part harmony. One of their best efforts, ever.
@@tedunguent156 Yes - it's Moonlight Sonata backward. Just brilliant.
@@laurasweet326 Uh, not exactly played backward. He asked Yoko to play it backward to get the feeling that led to his arrangement. There is a video here on UA-cam that goes into more detail. It's good.
The 3 Beatles who sung Becausr were actually better than the whole high school band no disrespect . Abby Road is perfection !
It’s a little less genius and original after knowing John admitted it’s genesis is Moonlight Sonata played backwards, but a beautiful song with great harmonies.
The most beautiful tribute I've ever heard. These young people prove that
greatness will never die.
Who would of known in 1963 with 'She Loves You' would end up with this song, the Beatles were everything in between.❤️
My father just left this world and listening to this brought me up to heaven with him. Thank you kids. Thank you always Beatles.

Hi Michael Scott
you are so right...instead we see the lethal competition for resources and power going now into space. Human tragedy has no end i am afraid.
I have heard this song a thousand times. But this version is by far the most beautiful....tears of joy are flowing...
Choral groups must love this song. It was recorded with such lush harmony originally, it's a great fit for them.
How this doesnt have 10 million views is beyond me
Because ........
The original has less than five million views.
That's because you are a discerning person and knows the difference between crap music and timeless music !!!
yet Nicki Minaj does
Definitely deserves a lot more views
I got chills when the vocals began. And it brought tears to these 65-year old eyes. I don't know why (I guess it's "because the sky is blue")
Thanks so much for sharing.
Steve
I always loved these lyrics. I learned this song when I was using my love for the Beatles to teach myself piano using youtube tutorials (Pianojohn113 was a good channel for this). Sometimes it would tear me up
Right there with you at 65.
I had the exact same reaction when the first notes were sung!
Thought I'd comment and bring you back here for another listen :)
@@EmpyreanLightASMR and it STILL brings tears to these old eyes. Thanks for the recollection.

Absolutely beautiful. This is why we need to fund the arts in schools. Cooperation produces harmony. Competition separates us into camps.
Lennon would be proud. This is so ethereal and sublime. All I can say is WOW!
This needs to be promoted more
Always good to see young people appreciate the Beatles. Well done
I normally dislike anyone who tries to cover a Beatles song. I consider their music to be sacred and off limits to those who would attempt to do justice to their genius. With that being said, THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!!! What a great choice to hand to these precious young voices. BRAVO!!!
i agree
Same here! I usually despise covers but this was just gorgeous!!!
I myself love Beatle covers: Sheryl Crow's "Here Comes the Sun," Earth Wind and Fire's "Got to Get You Into My Life," Ray Charles's "Eleanor Rigby," etc. etc. The Beatles cut their teeth doing covers, BTW.
I actually prefer covers by people with an interpretation talent. The Beatles usually lacked the skills to make the best off of their re-writing work (yep, thanks Beethoven...)
Those kids are great! (Piano a bit loud)
unless it's another genius ua-cam.com/video/JgHIm5AqtXc/v-deo.html
The most magical moment from this recording is those birds singing at the end... (Because... how could they not join in?)
If this doesnt show the genius of The Beatles I don't know what does!!!
Oh my Lord, what?! These children are amazing! Every time they sing ‘Because’ at 0:49, 1:22, and 2:07, it makes my scalp tingle. Choir Director, pianist, arranger, everybody-fine job!
Abby Martin -- they’re not children , for God’s sakes. They are young adults or teenagers
Someone had responded to my previous comment saying they are not "children". I see that their comment was since removed?? It disappeared. Anyway, I responded to them saying, "Children are defined as any youth under 18 (I think they are??) Besides, I’m old enough to be their mom-or maybe even their grandmother, yikes lol! In any case, they are very talented and did a fantastic job with this complex song." 👏👏👏
@@stephenkavanagh3560 They're children!

I am seeing this in Liverpool...and you did the song justice...the boys would have loved it I am sure x
Whilst I love this, it shows how incredible the Beatles were to do this themselves without a choir
To be fair, John, Paul, and George were each tracked 3 times on their vocals, so we are listening to 9 Beatles singing on the Abbey Road recording...
Everyone is the world needs to start their day by listening to this.
Thank you for this wonderful rendition of such a beautiful and overlooked song. Having first heard this song 50 years ago at age 11, I can say that your version brought tears of joy that today's youth can appreciate music so endemic to my soul.
What’s most impressive of this performance is the fact that we get to see this generation give tribute to this classic .
And they did a great job 👏
I’m on the verge of tears.... I’m sure John and George are looking down on all you lovely souls, so proud of you...
And now we all cry. Thank you. The Beatles forever!

In 1970 My High School Music Teacher Told Me The Beatles Would Be Forgotten In A Year Or Two, Shows How Much She Knew
That trend seems to have continued. Most "teachers" don't know much.
I heard “Something” as a 4 year old and knew then that they were extraordinary. My opinion hasn’t changed in 40+ years
You should find her on Facebook, and say to her, do you remember when to told the class, that the Beatles would be forgotten in a year or two? How’d that work out for ya.
@@ncfamily4 When I went to college at BGSU, as a music major, I was told that the guitar was not a musical instrument. I know it was meant as a statement of disrespect and arrogance and ignorance. Never forgot that! A few quarters later, I signed up to take classical guitar at the University and I was told by the teacher there was really nothing he could teach me, so we just jammed. Got an A 4.0.
@@jt1929 I was 5 when "Something" came out and that song awe struck me. I heard it on my fathers car radio coming home one evening. I didnt know who it was but I soon learned. Always share great music with your children. It will be one of the closest bonds you can have with them.

As time goes on the music of the Beatles becomes more and special and beautiful.
One of JOHNS most wonderful songs.
"Boys" is a song by Luther Dixon and Wes Farrell, originally performed by the Shirelles and released as the B-side of their "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" single in November 1960. It was recorded more than two years later by the Beatles and included on their first album released in the United Kingdom, Please Please Me.
The Beatles were heavily influenced by American music, starting in the late 1950s. A number of their early recordings were songs written by American songwriters. Eventually they just took the "baton" and were off to the races, so to speak.
So beautiful, gives me goosebumps!!!!! Literally................I am a 67 yr old Beatles fan.......
Absolutely fantastic ! It’s a heavenly sound that would even make angels weep. Long live The Beatles, they were after all.....heaven sent.
The almost ominous piano combined with the ethereal harmonizing of voices... on the surface it seems simplistic however this is a perfect example of the pure genius of The Beatles.

A lovely arrangement performed with surprising sensitivity and musicality.
