Charging the battery causes acidic gas to be emitted which can damage parts around the battery such as metal frame or paint or you could overcharge/discharge your battery causing it to explode or expand. More an issue on older batteries and chargers. If you know what you're doing and use a smart charger it should be fine to leave battery in bike while charging

why not just leave the battery it in the bike when charging
