    Thank you for the comparison! I spotted a something to improve on your comparisons. The Key Lights output 2700 lm at maximum, while the Key Light Air output 1400 lm at maximum. The ring light outputs 2500 lm at maximum. Both, the Key Light and Key Light air will represent a brighter light source than the Ring Light. Which I expect to be slightly bigger in light producing area than the Key Light. So yea, using one key light isn’t sensible.
    And like you said: The Key Light and Key Light Air are not meant to be used head on. This would make you look flat, missing smooth shadows. The Light is coming at an angle naturally, using the Ring Light somewhat close. But for a green screen you need at least two lights but professional setups have more like 4 to 5 lights. (And the green screen much farther away, I might add)

    I was considering rocking the two key light air setup before watching this but I’m now sold on the ring light. Cheaper option AND I needed the desk clamp option since I don’t have much desk space. The only thing holding me back from the key light air was the complaints about connectivity issues and the physical buttons on the ring light was the selling point for me. Going to try it out🙌🏼

    • @BadIntentStreamTechReviews

      You have to make sure they're all connected to the same wifi network. If one isn't showing up, you might need to reset the device and reconnect it since Control Center is pretty buggy.
      Personally, I use my computer with a wired Ethernet cable, create a hotspot, and connect all 3 lights and my phone to my computer's hotspot like that. I've found the most success doing that.

    FYI: A key light shouldn't be used on its own pointed at a subject. You should use a ring light in that scenario that avoids the harsh shadows, or if you're going to use a key light, at least bounce it off a wall, or the roof to create a better effect. If you can only afford one light get a ring light. Caveat emptor, you get what you pay for, a cheap ring light will still look cheap.

    Ok so the ring light seems to be the best option for me too. But is it enough for a professional stream? Apart from daylight, is there any additional light source that would make it even better? Is it even more powerful to use the ring light in a combination with key light air or key light?

    • @BadIntentStreamTechReviews
      @BadIntentStreamTechReviews  3 роки тому

      In the day time, I think the Ring Light is all that's needed, but at night time you can brighten up the whole shot by adding a Key Light as well. I made a quick video showing a few different examples so hopefully it helps. ua-cam.com/video/lpQ0YCmo3SA/v-deo.html

    Theoretically one could buy the base for the normal Elgato Light right as well? I like the base option but I have a big desk and it is running out space so the claps seem like the best way to go... but having the option to switch to a base is pleasing....

    • @BadIntentStreamTechReviews

      Even with glasses, I still use the Ring Light.
      If you are going to put a camera directly in the ring, it's not going to work well though. I raise the light higher to avoid the harsh glare and mount the camera to something else.

  • @davieslm
    @davieslm 3 роки тому

    These Elgato lights apart from the ring light (due to the manual controls) are a bit of a dealbreaker in an enterprise environment. The reason is because they all show up on the same network and Jimmy could control Bobby's lights for example.
    The ring light is massive and they should have made it so you could adjust it to a lower height as it is way too tall especially with the ball mount fitted. I think it just needs a different desk stand. Apart from that it gives off a ton of light and is easy on the eyes. I also have a pair key light airs next week and I have the desk clamp stands for them ready to go.
    EDIT: The Elgato solid arm with the ring light may resolve my problem as it can clamp to the top of my monitor arm. I have a cheap fixed offset floating design monitor arm for my Ultrawide and I think this will look decent and not ruin the asthetics with another pole clamped to the centre of the desk.

  • @larryt1004

    Great Review, Hi I know this is been awhile since you have done this review. But I'm debating whether I go with 2 key light air or 1 key light air and 1 original key light. Do you have any suggestions or at the end of the day I'm overthinking this?

    • @BadIntentStreamTechReviews
      @BadIntentStreamTechReviews  3 роки тому

      For the most common use case (at a desk), I'd say just two Key Light Airs is enough. A couple instances where you might want one Key Light and one Key Light Air is
      -You want to brighten up more of your background at night. The larger panel helps with this, but I still think it's better to use a separate, cheaper light for the background if you need that.
      -You want to bounce light off a white wall. The Key Light again with a bigger panel and more lumens is way better for bouncing light. But with two KLA, you can position them to avoid glare/eye strain anyway.
      tl;dr two Key Light Airs is my suggestion.

    • @larryt1004
      @larryt1004 3 роки тому +1

      @@BadIntentStreamTechReviews cool. One curve ball. I know you have two key light air and 1 original but if you only want to purchase one time and ensure you only make one purchase would you go a key light air and original because it gives you the "what if" if you want to scenario. I'm afraid that going with two key light air I would kick myself if I ever wanted to do more but is limited because I didn't go with 1 original key light. Kinda like mixing it up because at the end of the day a key light original can be used as a key light air plus the price tag :)

    • @BadIntentStreamTechReviews
      @BadIntentStreamTechReviews  3 роки тому

      @@larryt1004 For one purchase I'd still get two Key Light Airs. I originally got my KL and KLAs in March 2020 and I've tried mixing it up a lot and I just haven't had a need for the Key Light so tbh it mostly gathers dust.
      For some more examples, you can check out this demo from Elgato. ua-cam.com/video/f5C0OTFSoFA/v-deo.html. Since he works for the company of course you have to take the opinions with a grain of salt, but it mostly lines up with my experience.

    Would it be overkill to have one key light on each side of the camera? I don't have light in the ceiling and it gets super dark all day during winter (I film makeup content)! I am wondering if I should get two of the key lights or two of the key light airs. The key lights are up to 50% off during Black Friday, so price will probably be the same.

      Thanks for checking out the vid. If you can get them around the same price, I'd go with two Key Lights. They won't be overkill since you can adjust the brightness quite low and it will still be easy on your eyes. Another benefit is the Key Light has a bigger panel so it can brighten up your background a bit since you don't have a ceiling light.

    Hey, does the ring light actually go easy on the eyes? If yes, how much better is it? Cos i have been struggling on using the keylight air straight on and ended up bouncing it at the front wall which result in quite a dark lighting for my cam. Pls advice on this, thank you :)

    • @BadIntentStreamTechReviews
      @BadIntentStreamTechReviews  3 роки тому

      I can't quantify it, but I use the Ring Light with the bottom just over eye level and I'm able to do 2-3 hour streams without strain. Looking directly into it, probably not though.
      Speaking of bounced light, I tested bouncing the Key Light and Ring Light off of a wall in this video: ua-cam.com/video/EmtGY8wheJk/v-deo.html.
      Next time you use the Key Light Air, I'd use it off to the side just to see how it does for your eyes. If it works out, you can get a second one for the other side and save some money.

    I will probably get two Elgato Keylight Airs as I have a sit stand desk where the monitor is going to need to be moved up and down depending on the position and I do not think that having to move a ring light and camera every time is ideal. Though I could just put the ring light behind the monitor and mount the webcam to the monitor instead of the ring light. I am not sure...

      The way I do it is the webcam is on my monitor and the ring light is extended a bit to go above it. I find that to be the most convenient, but my desk is stationary.

      Connect like mounting it onto the ring light? Yes, you can but you have to buy the phone grip separately.

    do you know what's the maximum duration of usage is allowed for elgato key light air?

      I'm not sure if there's a built-in limit. I've left it on for 8+ hours before. I haven't had any of my Elgato lights turn off automatically.

    Is the Elgato Ring Light strong enough to bounce the light off a white wall (my desk is in a corner, so it will come off two sides) just behind so that I get strong enough light without the ring reflection on my glasses and without the strain on the eyes? I am looking at the Ring Light because the Key Light and Key Light Air are sold out everywhere.

      Great question, I actually tested this, and I'll upload an unlisted reply tonight so you can see an example (need to get both day and night examples).
      But in my experience, it's mildly effective in the day time, but just not quite bright enough at night. I'll show some examples in my next reply though.

      @@BadIntentStreamTechReviews Thanks. Looking forward to the video. The other question then is whether the Elgato Key Light would be a better choice for indirect lighting (2800 lm instead of 2500 lm or does the type / diffusion of the light make the difference)? I really think that in a corner with white walls, indirect light could works very well for someone with glasses (reflection, strain on eyes). I like the idea of the physical buttons on the ring light and if I read the specification correctly, the Ring Light also has the advantage of a lower mount - but I might have to work with the Multi Mount Flex Arm Kit anyhow to bring the light away from the wall.

      @@MartinBuechi Got some footage. Might take a few minutes to process to at least HD. ua-cam.com/video/EmtGY8wheJk/v-deo.html
      Took extra time since I decided to get daylight and night time footage of both the Key Light and Ring Light to compare. I think both the lumens and size/shape of the panel of the Key Light make it way better for bouncing. The Ring Light mount is shorter than the Key Light at max height, but at min height, accounting for the Ring's shape they're about the same height effectively.
      Overall I'd say if you want to bounce, use the Key Light. What's helped me (I still use the Ring Light daily) is to raise the Ring Light a bit higher.

      @@BadIntentStreamTechReviews Thanks. Much appreciated. The Key Light looks like the clear winner. Indirect light just seems to be so much easier on the eyes and easier to avoid reflection on my glasses.

    I have 2 Key Lights but I am having issues getting my Elgato green screen in a pitch black room (Preferred). I got them because I use stream decks that can control the lights. But I am getting fuzzy inconsistent green screen background so I am thinking of getting a Elgato Ring Light and using the 2 Key Lights as angle lights. The only issue is that I want it to be possible to have a guest. So I am worried will a ring light be odd. Also I use a Hero 5 Black and I am thinking of getting a second and a second Elgato Camlink to use for the guest instead of running duplicate video screens cropping different areas (People) out of each video opened and readjusting position. I hope this made sense... I basically want the lighting to be good and professional compared to the not bright enough issue I am having currently. Is there a distance suggestion and maybe a color setting suggestion etc.

      What kind of green screen are you using? Based on the experience with the one I have (Elgato Green Screen MT), I think you should have more than enough light even in pitch black. Two Key Lights is brighter than my setup.
      I'll make an unlisted video tonight if I can showing my chroma key settings in OBS and the way I position the lights.

      Ok I made a video showing my settings. It was a bit long cause impromptu/no script but skip to 3:02 for my final chroma key settings. ua-cam.com/video/Ndgmjzr3Sz8/v-deo.html. I don't have experience with GoPros, so I just showed my webcam settings at the beginning.
      I think if you do end up getting another light, it should be one behind the subjects that's aimed directly at the green screen to eliminate any extra shadows. Hopefully it helps a bit.
