Im 49 and remember the late 80's, mid 90s. Desperation does a lot. Sometimes you CAN'T wait patiently and build up etc. The door is being broken down now and you have to take whatever you are offered. NOW there is more opportunity and more understanding but NOW is built upon the backs of those from before. Good information and glad to see brothers getting theirs as well as understanding to put into their legacy as well.
Dr. Dre negotiated for the streaming rights because at the time of his deal streaming didn't exist. The Chronic wasn't on DSP's for years for this reason.
Having to invest partially in a music artist's catalog is an interesting idea. It could work similar to how Masterworks operates where you can partially own a work of art.
This is one of the best show on UA-cam when it comes to hip hop culture and the music business. I learn a lot listening to these guys. They are giving us free information and that’s amazing.
Dre discovered Snoop but since Deep Cover dropped(which is also a BIG RECORD in the DR catalog) every one was anticipating Snoop. Snoop prolly the reason everyone pays attention to first week sales now
The judge gave the rights for The Chronic album to Dre because Suge didn't give a fuck about paying Dre for years. When Suge was re-releasing Chronic material on various compilations and such, he was suppose to pay Dre royalty and other publishing rights as a producer and other roles he took. Suge didn't pay Dre for 10+years. When the judge saw this, it was sufficient evidence to just give The Chronic to Dre.

The reason why most of these artists are selling their publishing is the same reason for this question, would you rather have 4 million dollars or get paid $5,000 a week for the rest of your life? Even with lottery winners, most people would rather the lump sum
Not so sure bout that when it comes to these artists now selling their catalogs. I think its more to it then they need money. To many in the past few years are selling their catalogs or part of it for alot of millions and I don't believe they hard up for cash Rodney Jerkins,LA Reid,Bruce Springsteen,Bob Dylan,Stevie Nicks,Paul Simon,Neil Young,Barry Manilow,Beach Boys,Drake,The Weekend,Sting, and Justin Beiber and many more and this was just in recent yrs. @@andrewilliams9921 Sometimes these artists get caught in ass deals to begin with though. You sign a 4 record deal and they say you flop on the first? That label is gonna sit you down for life and you will never get a chance to fulfill that contract. Now you owe on the advance plus whatever bonus they gave you. Only option now is to sell your publishing and then buy your contract out and that's if they feel it's worth it.
