I have a pristine Puma White Hunter made in Sölingen, Germany in the second half of 1986 that my dad bought new around then, and never used it because it was such a fine piece and always wanted to own one as a collector. He handed it down to me in 2012. It’s a pristine and gorgeous knife without a single mar on it except the micro ‘ding’ on the blade from the factory Rockwell test. Also loving the one you are showcasing here.
Yes I could not agree more 440C can be incredible when done right I own a now discontinued Benchmade large chopper in 440C and I was out testing it on a hardwood pallet one day and I accidentally missed where I had meant to land the blade and ended up hitting the head of a nail with a great deal of force behind my swing! Well it took the side of that nail head clean off and I figured my knife would be ruined and need some serious sharpening to take out whatever chip or roll I'd find on my edge however upon inspecting the edge there was literally NOTHING it'd still cleanly slice paper afterwards even! I have since put that blade through hell and it is still wearing the factory edge lol
My dad was using this in my first memories, the earliest I can recall I was about 5 or 6 years old dressing deer and then he also cleaned fish with it, then I started using it after he passed away so all my life, and then a very bad thing happened. I lost it to a dirty pawn shop for a few dollars it was really sickening what they did. Anyway, I'm so blessed that I got another one back today and I'm really happy. I was just kind of looking to see if I can figure out the age of mine. The Stag looks like it might be old but the sheath looks like new it's in great shape, but I'm just glad to have it, it's a great knife it's a beautiful knife, it's a classic. I admired them brand new when I was a kid in the '80s. I would see them in the tobacco shops in the mall and I just drool over having my own, but I never could back then. They were like a $125 which was a fortune! I paid around $200 today just 2 years ago before all the things that have been going on they were going for 400 plus for the ones made around the seventies. Nice review.
I bought one last night from an online auction, I think I probably bid to high, I got it for $200 plus buyers premium and tax, all in $240, then drove an hour to pick it up. It was a fair deal. Mine was also made in 2007. It's unused with box and paperwork, it's still has the factory edge.
The hole in the grip isn’t for a lanyard. The string at the top of the sheath is pushed through the hole in the grip, then looped over the top of the grip. It’s a backup, or alternative to the leather snap. I know this because my father received a similar puma knife(Hunters Pal) for his first anniversary from my mother in the 50s. At that time they did not have the leather snap just the string that went through the hole and back over the grip. While hunting Whitetail in Oklahoma, he had gutted a few deer in a row and got tired of putting that string through the grip. He subsequently lost it, and when I found the box years later, when I was in college, there was nothing in the box but the sheath. He told me that story, and I saved up money and for Christmas I bought him another one. That was in the 80s. It is now my go to hunting knife.
I have a few pumas, a pal that is on my belt daily, a skinner that is used for skinning and stays sharp through the whole deer. They do what they are made for and that's what I bought them for so all good.
The Puma Original Bowie has better steel than the Puma White Hunter I bought (IMO). I'd much rather have 440C than the 1.4116 for actual use, than my "keepsake display piece" Puma White Hunter I bought in Germany 10 years ago.
I own a pre-1963, Puma White Hunter. The knife is a True Collector Grade with the original wooden presentation box ! I purchased a Puma New Hunter to actually take in the woods for camp use. Enjoy Your Tools and Stay Safe.
You got that right! That’s why I really focus on more well priced great knives than Pageant beauty queens that gather dust instead of rain, mud and dirt. 😂
I do understand what you're saying. However, look at it like buying a $10,000 truck. You would drive it through the mud, snow, throw a cord of firewood in the back, and not think twice. We shouldn't bat an eye using a $500 knife. Lol, but we do!!!
Great knife man, and great review!!! The knife from the movie Crocodile Dundee was inspired by that very knife you are holding. John Bowring, who worked with Puma, designed Mick's knife!!!
Wrong! Its not 440 C Steel but 14116 German Steel. Good Steel though. Even all Victorinox Swiss Army knives have 14116 Steel. Also known as 440 or 440 A, but not 440 C.
My 73 buck has 440c also. Great steel. 110.
The super steel of its time.

There's just something about Puma knives that is special. Glad I got this one at such a great price. I use it and take good care of it.
@@CommonCentsOutdoorsman absolutely! They are a wok of art! Germans, especially in past years, only produce highest quality, or won’t produce at all.

A testament to the heat treat!

That's a great story Jerry and I'm glad you were able to find another!
@@CommonCentsOutdoorsman thank you brother me too I'm so blessed to have this again so happy that it's such a nice and well kept Puma Bowie! 🙏🏻
@@TheLesporter thanks for that info!

That's cool brother Bigred. These are special knives still mostly handmade. Their 440c is the best I've ever used. Worth the trip!
Nice knife..35 years ago i bought a black jack model 1.7 still use it .thats a real nice knife! Great vidio.
Thanks brother!

Cool story. I'm glad you still have it!
NOW THATS A KNIFE !!!!!
I agree with you on 440c.
If done right, (as you said), it is still primo steel in my humble opinion
Yeah I think so craig. Especially German steel done right.

Great to hear that brother!
My 2 favorite spinners are the pal and a case 366 that was made back in the 60s, both are great knives that I'll be passing to my nephews soon
That's a knife I've been wanting for awhile, I'm always eyeing them on eBay. One day....
Nice video brother.
I'm glad I picked it up years ago for such a great deal. Definitely a keeper. Thanks for watching brother!
You might want to check on eBay there's a few that are pretty well priced right now one of them's coming up on the 9th of September
Thank you Jerry
@@MountaincraftOutdoors you're very welcome!
Yikes! For $100 you practically stole it! Nice review… 👍😎👍
Thanks Larry!

Brother, German 440c is the best 440c I've come across. There may be better but I don't have it.
I have one original. But the recurve isn't practical

Classic lines on that beauty .
Yes sir brother Guy!
Great knife
Yes! Thanks for watching Greg.
Bad thing about having expensive knives is not wanting to use them or lend them because of the craftsmanship and price
Yeah sometimes they're just to pretty to mess up lol.

Its my only thing i truly love

Thanks led!
I had one but sold it very quickly the handle is wayyy too thin
Yeah it's a weird handle for sure.
I just bought the whitehunter it's already been like 5 months and I'm still waiting for it
Dang hopefully soon. Glad I picked up this bowie when I did it was a steal.

It IS 440C. Model 116396, made in Solingen Germany. At least mine is, made in 2013.
That's ridiculous for the price of a Puma
Yeah now they're so high it is a bit crazy. Glad I got mine when I did.
Like Night force scopes, Cry once and enjoy it the rest of your life. While other jealous people BITCH.
0 cents outdoorsman. WTF are you doing with that knife?
