This recording was produced in Chicago on April 21st 1926 with Joe 'King' Oliver cornet, Bob Schoffner trumpet, Kid Ory trombone, Albert Nicholas clarinet, soprano, & alto sax, Billy Paige alto sax, Barney Bigard clarinet, soprano, & tenor sax, Luis Russell piano, Bud Scott banjo, Bert Cobb sousaphone, and Paul Barbarin drums. *"Deep Henderson" was composed by Fred Rose. The song's title refers to either the Henderson Creek that flows through Henderson County, Illinois or the colored section of the town of Henderson located on the Ohio River.
To my mind, this is one of the best jazz records of all time, certainly one of Oliver's best. Because of the depth of feeling revealed here by all musicians, particularly by Oliver. But to hear this adequately, you have to pump up the jam. During Oliver's solos, I get the impression of "hearing" a colour: a deep, blueish black.
Deep Henderson est un dévellopement en perpétuelle transformation plein d'heureuses surprises (et je suis étonné que ce morceau ait une fin !)
