Mazda 6 Touring review - is Platinum the one to go for?

- I've always been a big fan of the Mazda 6 since the newest model launched in 2014/5.
Up until now however, I hadn't driven the touring version of the car. It has a massive boot but does the car handle as well as the saloon?
How well is the Platinum model specced as standard and what other points does the car have over the competition, watch on to find out.

Estate cars are very underrated in these SUV obsessed times. Spare wheel is a must though!
Why?? Mini compressor along the side of the road on a dark evening in the pissings of rain is way handier than changing a wheel... provided of course you didn't wreck your alloy..then u are stranded, that's rare enough, most punctures are nail/screw on worn tyres
It's a 2.0 4 cylinder petrol engine, 165hp and the estate has 522 litres of boot capacity

Big fan of Mazda. When everyone else has a civic vtec I was the odd ball with the Mazda 323 GT. The only Tourer on the market up against price wise is the Skoda Superb Estate. A fine piece of kit.
I bought it a month ago. 2.2 diesel station wagon, it's amazing car....
Great review Nobby, I have an older Mazda 6 (2014) and have always bought Mazda as they've never let me down. Just had a new baby arrive and am now looking at getting an estate for space as we've a dog as well! Also gotta mention that I love the show!!!

Just wanted to bounce something off you Nobby, I was looking at the previous generation of the estate (2016/17) and found a couple with quite a bit of mileage on them (220k kilometers), lots of people have said not to let high mileage put me off (motorway miles, they're very well built etc) but on the other hand I just feel that's a little too high for a 3 year old car. Just wondering if you've any thoughts on buying in this range at high mileage?
nellser it is high for a 3 year old car, like anything at that mileage lots of servicing needs to be documented and you’d want to be getting it for a price that’s reflective. There’s been some issues with the 6 diesels so worth looking at google on that too. That said, I run a 2007 325 with 205,000kms on it for when I’m not in a test car and it runs perfectly
It's because of videos like this that make me want to live in a country that gets estate cars! The usa is definitely missing out on this!

Just ordered my second (used) Mazda 6 2.2 175BHP estate. Very practical, lovely to drive, stylish. Quick, but still returns close to 50mpg across mix of driving. I've had a BMW 520d M Sport Touring previously and it felt a bit more luxurious but for me at the moment, not worth the extra £3/4k for same mileage and year.
The estate is actually a few mm shorter than than saloon (mad!!) .... the difference in handling is the bit of weight back there, but its still far better than any other mainstream saloon, due to the skyactive. I have 172 estate in soul red (pre facelift) - love it. Estate is perfect balance of style and space. BTW all crossovers (Tuscon, CX5, etc) are smaller, your 100% right. Diesel is a must, and if you keep withing the speed limits, it will will do 3.5 litre/100km all day !! GREAT REVIEW
Mazda diesel is a weak engine.
Is the sedan that noticeably better dynamically speaking?? I want practicality without sacrificed dynamics.
It’s shorter in length than the saloon according to tech specs not longer? Touring is 4805mm vs Saloon’s 4870mm.
Mazda makes one of the best looking wagons in the world, and we can't even order one in North America🙈 Of course I understand, they wont sell...even most guys who say they love wagons will end up buying something else. To me this is perfect for people who might need some extra cargo space, but don't want to drive a crossover/suv. With Mazdas turbo engine and slightly tightened up suspension, this could be a comfy yet fun road trip car for 3-4 people.

I'd go for a spare any day, even a space saver is better than a compressor and sealant
Good review. I've driven Hondas for a long time and now ready to replace my 2017 Civic Tourer. As they don't offer a touring model (or any model that I like) this tidy Mazda looks like the obvious choice. And lugging the weight of a spare wheel around in case of a flat tyre is a waste of money.

Had a sit in back if one of these and there is quite a dip in roof for sunroof. Feels a bit claustrophobic. Can you review Merc E400d estate?
I am surprised that for a top-of-the-line variant for Ireland does not get the Digital Speedometer.........considering that all other EU markets get it (e.g. UK, Poland, Germany, etc.)

If you can afford a new 6, or know anybody that can and wants one, you better buy one quick, as it looks like Mazda is about to kill them off for good, with no sign of a fourth generation in sight!!
Indeed I know that Mazda has been constantly refreshing the 6 since 2013, while they released a fourth gen 3 about four years ago, but as "old' as it is, the third gen 6 is still great and it's been great that you could still buy a new one when so many other companies are killing off saloons altogether and certainly not many around making them the way Mazda still make the 6, petrol, naturally aspirated, manual first and foremost and just the right size!!
But indeed while we've still been able to buy the 6 saloon in three specs for many years, the estate lost all above its' base spec about three years ago, while it was the opposite way in the U.K.
But the biggest warning sign that the new Irish 6s are running out is that starting about two weeks ago, while you could still select your desired spec, gearbox and colour etc, all the little extras like puddle lights and side skirts etc are gone...
While looking at the U.K.s' Mazda website, the 6 is now totally gone there and in other countries!!
Sure we can still buy a 3 and its' about 90% as good as the 6 , but it's smaller and rather plain at the rear!
Anyway, as said, buy a new one when you can!! 😯😐 .

No spare is a deal breaker unfortunately
It's a pity most new and not so new cars are doing that, to cut cost and weight across the range - it may seem (and really is!) stupid to us, but the kilo or three it saves can bring the overall weight below particular targets which actually allows the manufacturer to quote lower emissions levels and therefore tax bands!!
For example, higher specs of the same car with the same engine and gearbox as lower spec models generally get higher CO2 ratings even though they're surely exactly the same!!
My girlfriend recently bought a 162 Suzuki Swift and that doesn't have a spare wheel, so indeed it's as said ridiculous, but quite common in the last ten-ish years - compare that to my 08 Mazda 6 which has a full size spare wheel Vs the "spacesaver" wheel in my first car, a 00 Focus, in which I bought a full size spare wheel and kept it in the boot! 😯😂🩲😀🤘

The 160 ps 2 litre petrol engine is too loud. Youd feel exhausted after a motorway trip in this.
If your thinking getting the diesel 2.2 model research and google mazda 2.2 diesel engine and let the horror unfold. Engine failure is common at very low miles due to an engineering fault. Avoid the diesel at all costs.
I don't even know how this diesel engine was released to public it has so many issues , cost me a fortune
Here we go more diesel haters. I have a 64 plate sport nav estate it's runs sweet as a nut starts on the button every time. Other than a new battery and a vacuum pump I can't fault it. It gets a regular service and with 80000 miles on it. Not all Mazda diesels fall apart as soon as you look at them.
Looks a lovely car and has a great finish and spec, but Nobby needs to be more descriptive in his comments. Also the volume is quite low, so his views are not very convincing. As it's a touring car the review should have been centred outside Dublin city. Head for the country Nobby and give people a more realistic feel for the car.
hi Donal - all level peaks are between -6 to 0 db so there shouldn't be any issues with the volume. I like to mix the locations up, plenty of the videos on the channel are outside of city centre locations.
would not buy any car, with no spare wheel.................need my spare........come on mazda
