Many years ago there was a joke that one of the DJs at Radio Luxembourg had bought an American. Apparently it was so long that when he parked it at the studio the front of the car was in Germany while the back was in France.
Imagine a family reunion:
“Hey Heinrich”
“Yes mother?”
“Yes mother?”
“Yes mother?”
“Yes mother?”
“Yes aunt?”
“Yes aunt?”
“Yes aunt?”
“Yes grandma?”
they probably had middle names that they actually went by. you know, royals do that a lot.
@@beckbudgie6815 yeah but this is funnier
@@beckbudgie6815 or they went by number.
@@coreyskuse9387 who does number 2 work for!
some poor Wikipedia editor made an entire family tree for the Reuss Younger Line, its incredibly confusing

I don't see the problem every male is just called Heinrich.
@@xydyr4864 imagine the only thing distinguishing you form your entire ancestry going back centuries being a number attached to your name

@@xydyr4864 Yes - but...
Fun fact: the predominance of the regal names Heinrich and Konrad in early German kings and emperors gave rise to the phrase "Hinz und Kunz" (derogatory shortenings of the names) to refer to a group of people one is not interested in enough to differentiate.
Even as a German I didn't know this. Thanks!
That's a great fun fact!
“Heinrich 72nd” sounds like a name suggestion in a crowded online gaming server if you try to give your character a basic name, e.g., if you tried naming it “Dark Knight” and the server replied “name already taken, how about Dark Knight 173?”.
😂😂
I looked down and honestly expected 100,000s of views and 1,000s of comments; this is high-quality content! Fascinating little video and brilliant production value.
Not gonna lie, not the most outreaching content
@@derrickstorm6976 I don't see how so? Other channels producing content alike this enjoy a much larger success with lesser production value and care. Plus, an interesting topic; who doesn't want to learn about a monarch with a ridiculous regnal number?

Yeah, I can tell you that I won't be liking this video and am skeptical of your content
This is not how Regnal numbers work, so you've essentially wasted mine and everyone elses time.
Think about that
Ahhh, yes. The House of Reuß and their schizophrenic name numbering system. As a history geek with a particular interest in german noble dynasties, I can't tell you how happy I am that you brought this up. :D
😂
I originally made the script for this video ages ago and ended up forgetting about it. But then I found it again while writing about Ludwig I, and when I realized that Lola Montez was involved here too I felt I had to finish it! Btw, apparently Anni-Frid Lyngstad, a member of ABBA married into the house of Reuss in 1992, so since then she has held the titles Princess Reuss and Countess of Plauen. Also, after having been used as a nursing home under the DDR, Ebersdorf Castle was abandoned in 2000. Recently however, it has been repurchased by Heinrich XIX of Reuss and is being restored.
This reminds me to the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt when every single male of the royal dinasty was called Ptolemy.
As I am born in Greiz I got a lot in touch with the history of the Reuss. They definetly one of the weirder royal houses with their naming traditions.
Fun fact with 77 years Heinrich XI has one of the longest reigns in history.
Hello from a fellow "Greizer"! ^^
Yes, indeed - one of the very longest at all.
Fun fact: his aunt is the maternal grandmother of queen victoria of UK and also they were related to henry viii 4th wife anne of cleves family through one of her siblings and also that is where the ancestress of most european monarchs also came from.
WhaaAaAaaaAt?!
@@mjaned0528 yes! I do check he family tree of anne of cleves family and somehow they were related to the UK royalties and the ancestress of Europe and also if you search his name and clicked paternal or maternal siblings you would find a woman duchess of saxe cobourgh and gotta in which the belgian house descent and UK royal house
OK, so who is the monarch with the highest regnal number that’s not the result of some ridiculous loophole?
Maybe Constantine XI
Probably the pope he mentions in the video, unless you want to call that a loophole too
@@DaRoachDoggJR. never thought of popes as monarchs, but I guess they are
@@LookToWindward They are the Sovereigns of Vatican City State, as per the Fundamental Law of Vatican City. Which would make them elected absolute monarchs as they have full legislative, judicial, and executive powers.
Pope John XXIII.
Louis XIX (ephemeral) or Louis XX (pretender) of France.
My ancestors were also all named Heinrich, well until one was a bastard. Now we are named Richard, but the last name carried on.
B.t.w. your pronunciation of Prinziepienreiter is great.
It's these small details and mostly obscure people and events (at least to me) that make this channel so tremendously entertaining.
Thanks for your work and for sharing it with the rest of us!
Imagine all your brothers and cousins having the same name that must’ve been confusing
I wonder if they referred to eachother by their number instead of the name.
Like "Hey look it's my favourite cousin! Number 22!"
Or "where are 3,7 and 18?"
@@shinyagumon7015 i hate you, number LXIX
The Beagle Boys have to disagree.
I am named after my grandfather and as such I have three cousins with my exact full name.
And it's quite annoying because my older cousins already took all the reasonable Instagram usernames based on my name.
Sigh.
George Foreman named all five of his sons after himself, so they're George Jr., George III, George IV, George V, and George VI.
I love how you used Jean Baptiste- Lully’s music in the video! (0:00-0:40) You definitely have taste! Keep up with the wonderful videos!
Lully was Italian by birth and was taken to France as a young man and probably became more French than the French -his operas were used to glorify the absolute monarchy and splendor of the Sun King Louis XIV.
The piece of Music in the video is from the Opera Atys, Acte I, Scène 8: Prélude.
When we refer to "the Bundestag" we generally mean the government body that first met on September 7, 1949. The investigation in 1826 mentioned in the video might have been called for by the "Bundesversammlung" of the Deutsche Bund which met between 1815 and 1866. Though this body is occasionally referred to as the "Bundestag", it is not "the Bundestag" in the contemporary sense, and to see a historical continuity between the Bundesversammlung of the Deutsche Bund and the current parliament (the Bundestag) of the Federal Republic of Germany is to paint with a somewhat broad brush. The Deutsche Bund was dissolved along with its parliament by the Prussians during the formation of the German Empire (Kaiserreich), which in turn somewhat reluctantly established an imperial parliament (Reichstag) in Berlin in the ensuing years. The Berlin Reichstag Building, having been completed in 1894, was also the site of the parliament of the Weimar Republic (also referred to as the Reichstag) from 1919 to 1933 when it burned during the events leading up to the NS dictatorship. From 1934 to 1945, though still in existence in theory, the parliament was effectively neutralized by the dictatorial NS government. After 1945, as a result of the inability of the victorious allies of World War II to agree on a state form for Germany, the Western Allies sponsored the formation of a Bundestag in Bonn whilst the Soviet Union aided East Germany in forming a parliament called the Volkskammer in Berlin. Both existed parallel to one another between 1949 and 1990 when the Volkskammer dissolved itself and a new, unified German republic was founded on the basis of the West German "Grundgesetz" (constitution or basic law) and the institutions that had followed from it. The parliament of the new, unified German republic moved most of its activities from Bonn to Berlin in 1999 with the Reichstag building of the former German Empire (Kaiserreich) as its symbolic seat and plenary room.
So we see the Bundestag of 1815 to 1866 is not THE Bundestag.
Lola Montez came to Australia at one point and had numerous adventures. Some years ago they made a TV series about her time here, but I didn't see it so I cannot say whether or not it did her justice.
Thank you for the video!
Cool. I know her because she caused a scandal in Bavaria which threatened the Wittelsbach monarchy. What a lady.
Numbering all family members instead of going by their names is a concept which is rarely used outside Reuß for a reason.
Now we know George Foreman's favorite royal family.
Fantastisk produktion.
"Yo Heinrich LXIIV, have you seen Heinrich LXVII earlier?"
"Sorry Heinrich LXVI, but I did meet Heinrich LXX and Heinrich LXXII today!"
"That's alright. Just tell Heinrich LXVII that Heinrich LXV wants to speak with him."
"Sure thing. Could you in turn tell Heinrich LXIV for me that Heinrich LXXV wants to have dinner with him later?"
"Yeah, but I'm seeing Heinrich LXXI first."
"Alright. See you around!"
Nice one.
This channel is utterly brilliant!! I learn so much from your content! Keep it up! 👍🏻
This video just showed up and I am so glad it did. It's very good and so interesting. You have a most pleasant voice. I'll probably be binge watching your videos now!
So traditionally, who is the monarch with the highest regnal number?
My speculation is Pope John XXIII. All I could think
@@t_0246 There would also be controversy in considering popes as "traditional" in this sense, as they don't inherit their titles from birth, nor do they keep birth names (usually), so something like "John XXIII" is kind of cheating, and not as impressive as having a continuous family actually having 23 monarchs with the same name.
Louis XVIII of France would be a good contender if popes are not accepted. And theoretically his nephew was king Louis XIX for 20 minutes before he abdicated during the July 1830 revolution.
@@Igor_054 well you do have a point
@@Igor_054 Regnal names are often chosen in more traditional monarchies, too. For example, King George VI of Britain was named Albert at birth.

I'm Henry the 72nd, I am
Henry the 72nd I am, I am
I got married to the widow next door
She'd been married 71 times before
His descendant just attempted to overthrow the German government
The Wikipedia articles about this family are incredible. For example, Prince Heinrich XIV was the son of Heinrich LXVII, had brothers named Heinrich V, Heinrich VII, Heinrich XI, and Heinrich XVI, and fathered a single son, Heinrich XXVII.
Portugal is almost 900 years, never had any king over VI.
That’s what happens if you don’t name every child the same
Not even 800 of monarchy
@@maximilianbeyer5642 Not really. There are many kings whose regnal names are not even based on their first birth name. For example; George VI of UK was born as Prince Albert Frederick Arthur George. He took George VI as his regnal name due to the tradition that the British kings after Queen Victoria's reign were either; George, or Edward. And because his birth name didn't include "Edward", "George" was the only option available for him.
On Portugal's case, it was more or less because there were no rules that forced their rulers to take the specific regnal names. They went from Afonso, then to; Sancho, Dinis, Pedro, etc. The entire Portugal's monarchy consisted rulers with 17 different regnal names.
There were 36 kings over the years in Portugal, so even if all had the same name there would never be more than a XXXVI. With the added problem that two of them were women, bringing it down to XXXIV. Portugal cannot compete with Heinrich (we had only one Henrique)
@@reinhardofavercland7448 There was a trend in the 1st dinasty that went Afonso- Sancho-Afonso-Sancho-Afonso, but it stopped with Dinis. I don't know about Dinis, but Sancho is not the best name for a king... After Dinis, there was another Afonso, but Pedro stopped the whole thing.
This is Gormenghast stuff. Fascinating, though, so keep it up. Thanks.
Cool video
Nice music, I love Chopin
Very well-summarized video about a house hated by genealogists all around Europe. ^^
Little correction, though: The term "Prinzipienreiter" wasn't invented by him, he was merely rephrasing the French expression "etre a cheval sur les principes" in a declaration concerning the incorrect use of his title, and a famous writer then coined the term in reference to him. (He and his family were a popular target of satire.)
72nd is a surprisingly difficult word to say
Very interesting. If you have ever played HFM there is a German opm named reuss, is this the very same one?

How the heck did they manage to get 72 Heinrichs in only about 650 years?! They must have been dropping like flies.
both of those a-flat mazurkas are so nice
Do you think when they had family get togethers they addressed eachother by number instead of name?
More likely, they went by middle names, but that is a pretty funny image. I do wonder what they would do if they ever had twins, though.
This is small but amazing
There has been a Heinrich LXXV though, but he barely reached his first birthday, dying at an age of 1 year and 3 weeks on Christmas Eve 1801.

Lola Montes really got around, didn't she? The great director Max Ophuls filmed her biopic back in 1955, featuring Peter Ustinov and Martine Carol.
His family REAAALLLLY liked the name Henry.

You don't get regnal numbers like that without some serious long term family commitment...
Big Heinrich Energy
For a guy with such a large ranking, he sure left a very small mark; I've never heard of this guy until now.
You shout Heinrich around there and there would be a stampede
So what is the highest regnal number by conventional means?
So it's sort of like the song "I'm Henry the 8th, I am"
