Maximilian Joseph: The First King of Bavaria
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 лют 2025
- Whereas his predecessor had been hated for his attempts to sell out Bavaria, his wastefulness and for his reactionary policies, Maximilian Joseph would vehemently defend his country’s sovereignty and try to reform it into an efficient and liberal state. Trapped between the French and Austrians he was soon dragged in to the Napoleonic wars and would for a long time be the most faithful of Napoleon's German allies. Although Bonaparte was eventually defeated, Max emerged from the Congress of Vienna having protected his country's independence and gained the title of king.

"Why was King Maximilian so beloved?"
"Good optics"
Absolutely fascinating as always. Such an interesting man. Great video!
What a brilliant video. I’m hosting a war game of the first battle at Landshut. This has been immensely helpful
Another great video on Kings, Things and Bavaria channel.
What a relaxing and thorough video.
I hope future historians watch these videos in awe while they study there field of work, I’m sure you’ve inspired ATLEAST one person therefore you changed history yourself!
Great video as always
Please do more of these. They are wonderful.
Do you have a sponsorship site? I would love to see more on Bavaria, Saxony, Denmark, Sweden, and Poland.
To think his stepson Eugène de Beauharnais could become king of Italy, he ended up being the best new royal created by Napoleon. It's not a coincidence Maximilian didn't turn his back on him, not only because he married his daughter but because he had proven his value 🧐
I love your work, thank you so much for creating this content, I've always wanted to learn more about the more minor powers (Bavaria for example) in the world since I always focused on great powers, I love your content!
Excellent!
Its such a delightfully weird feeling to hear about my country's history, especially a period I know well by my profession, in the English language and with such delicate sense for detail and atmosphere.
Please post the musical selections for your videos. Thank you.
You can find all the music I used in the description. :)
I'd trade our democracy for a king like Maximilian in a second. What a time.
Would you trade it for his son?
the problem is that a good king can't guarantee a capable successor, but looking at modern day governments including most democracies a monarchy limited by laws and a reasonably strong parliament would perhaps not be the worst of governments I reckon.
Also in regards to Ludwig II, he was given a lot of bad press because the people driving him from power needed him to be portraied as insane to justify their takeover.
Sure he wasn't the best king but throughout history there have been much worse and looking at his architecural folly even this has turned out to have been a good long term investment just factoring in tourism. Had he been allowed to build for maybe one more decade bavaria may have been saddled with debts, but the architectural treasures that would have been added to its landscape would no doubt rival Neuschwanstein in renown.
how is this channel so underwatched lol
Very interesting, I had never even heard of him
I love deep dives in the micro german states. Congratulations!
Napoleon looks at the map of the Holy Roman Empire: "Sacre Bleu! These borders don't make any sense! What's with all the enclaves and exclaves? 🤨 Talleyrand, bring my ruler 📐, it's time to implement the metric system in Germany. " 😏
You’re welcome.
Again the interest in Bavaria; fascinating.
7:40 these images are not from the Bavarian government in the early 1800s and are in fact from the estates general in 1789 Paris, please don’t use fake images for different events :)
16:15 That is not the former univerity building in Ingolstadt. That is the Episcopal Summer Residence in Eichstätt, which today is part of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. I can understand that you misplaced it though.
Good video nonetheless
16:10 BTW, that's the Summer Residence of Eichstätt. Today it is the seat of the administration of the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.

*Karl* Theodor, not Charles he was German. #DontCopyWikipedia.
Everyone on youtube is breathless, gimmicky, and stupid. You make really good videos. Thank you for making these.
